this driver, we would need the DDK, which is not open-source,
thus cannot go in contrib, thus the driver would not satisfy (2).
AFAIK everything else in main and contrib is done this way.

No, means at one time Mandrake was more commercial, meaning more
closed development

waiting for python-numeric (which is in main) before I can rebuild gdal
... I am sure there are a number of other packages that need others
rebuilt first.

If this does not work, please also try changing the order of the
pam_unix and pam_ldap password lines.
If this does change the behaviour, it may mean pam_ldap isn't reading
/etc/pam.d/passwd correctly.
