The pattern of corruption looks like a pixel format mixup or colour
channel overflow. So I would bet it's related to the 10-bit/8-bit colour
changes in Mesa and Mutter...

I can't reproduce it on my desktop (Haswell, 10-bit monitor).
I can reproduce it on two laptops (Kaby Lake, 8-bit panels).

Is the problem Ubuntu-specific? I've been wondering if our mesa
patch(es) in this area are still necessary (since mutter fixed their
side, didn't they?).

Bug description:
  Immediately after login (I enter the password and hit enter) the screen 
"crumbles" for few seconds, then all becomes normal and the system works fine. 
I have done apt update+upgrade many times, also with proposed enabled, I have 
also installed a new ISO (now i'm using the Alpha dated 20180305) but the 
problem remains. The problem happens with the x11 session but not with wayland. 
  Also problem does not show with different hardware.

Title:
  Login screen bypassed for at least 20 seconds after awakening machine
  from suspend

Bug description:
  Since upgrading to GNOME 3.20 on Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 I have noticed
  something rather worrying which has occurred twice so far, this is
  what I have observed:

  1. After opening my laptop lid the screen either goes black or
  displays a frozen state of the shield opening or something similar

  2. Then it suddenly shows Firefox (the last window I had open, though
  I did minimize it before suspending my machine my closing the laptop
  lid) and actually allows me to use my mouse to interact with it by
  going to a new tab, or really anything I want, I haven't tried to see
  if I am able to type in this state yet or not, but I will update this
  report the next time I manage to test it out. This is obviously a
  really bad thing for security as for at least 20 long seconds (each
  time it occurs it seems to last longer) it logs you straight back in
  and bypasses the login screen, though for some reason the title part
  of the window and everything above that are completely black as if
  someone just put a big black box over them.

  3. I then suddenly see black and no Firefox (this black only lasts for
  a short period though), then I see what I see when I would normally
  log in for the first time (my background image coming in with that
  getting larger image with the top bar at the top of it), and then it's
  back to the normal locked screen as it should be.

  The sequence of events (what I see on my screen) seems to vary between
  occasions, but the ability to interact with my machine without having
  to log in stays even though it at some point does register that it
  should really be taking me to the locked screen. And I have checked
  and if I for instance open a new tab and go to one of my bookmarks in
  Firefox during this strange bypassing period, when I properly log back
  in again (and find Firefox minimized as I left it) I find that that
  tab is still open so the changes are real and lasting.

  At work I have a second screen, which I prefer to virtually put on the left 
side of my laptop screen.
  Using gnome-control-center I can change the position of the second without 
problem.
  But when I disconnect the second screen (to work on another place) and then 
connect it again
  OR if I just power off the laptop and turn it on again,
  the second screen position is set back to the default right position.

Title:
  4.4.0-116 Kernel update on 2/21 breaks Nvidia drivers (on 14.04 and

Bug description:
  Running fine with nvidia-384 until this kernel update came along.
  When booted into the new kernel, got super low resolution and nvidia-
  settings was missing most of its functionality - could not change
  resolution.

  Rebooted into 4.4.0-112 kernel and all was well.

  The root cause of the problem has been found to be installing the -116
  kernel without a sufficiently updated version of gcc.  In my case, my
  system received the gcc update AFTER the kernel update.

  Uninstalling the -116 kernel and reinstalling it with the updated
  version of gcc solved the problem for me.

  nouveau). The miniDP port is apparently connected to nvidia since it
  stops working when I use nouveau.modeset=0. I am able to start a
  Wayland session when there's no secondary monitor connected; as soon
  as I connect it to miniDP the wayland session crashes and falls back
  to the greeter. The greeter won't even start Wayland session - it
  immediately crashes back to the greeter. Workaround is to use the
  Xorg-based session which works properly with secondary monitor.

separately), I'm using an old Dell laptop which probably has no discrete 
graphics card, with the standard driver - i.e. no additional / proprietary

I'm pretty sure this is due to the installed / featured / editor's picks
being loaded at the same time and all loading the channel information.
The channel code was copied off the screenshot code and has no thread
protection.

The solution is to only load the screenshot and channel information when
explicitly requested by GNOME software - this is done when you select
and individual app. There is possibly other bugs like this and this
could also be triggered if other code paths in GNOME Software attempt to
load screenshots and channels from different threads.

No, I hadn't tried to install chromium at all - I merely used the one version 
of chromium which came bundled with Budgie.

The output of that command was:
firefox.desktop
...which is interesting, given that by default, chromium is the only browser 
installed in Budgie - at least in the daily builds.

Jeremy, it seems that this issue has already been reported upstream, but the 
issue has been closed and I don't yet know how to reopen it:

I'd edit the desktop.in.in files directly myself, but am a newcomer to
the process for doing so. Any pointers to how-to's, etc?


Also, on the issue of Gnome having two upstream bugtrackers, I note that 
according to the following link:

... they say that their plan is "Shortly after the new solution (Gitlab) is 
setup, disable issue reporting in Bugzilla (as well as new accounts, 
milestones, etc)."
So I guess we can just use Gitlab for issues going forward.

  Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items

  See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not as
  useful / intuitive as it could be, as it finds results for some items
  located within the top-level menu entries / categories, but not all
  items.

  Being able to find all menu sub-items from the search tool without having to 
pore through individual menus is the ideal outcome, and is my intention in 
raising this bug report - the individual examples below are merely instances of 
this broader pattern. Please note that these examples seem to be changing 
rapidly, as overnight updates have made some search terms return valid results 
when only a few days ago they didn't. 

  Examples of search terms that don't work / work fully:
  - cursor (no items found; should return "Universal Access")
  - high (ditto)
  - sound (only returns the "sound" menu; should also return "Universal Access"
  - sharing (brings up some valid results, but not "Notifications" which 
includes the item "desktop sharing".
  - desktop (ditto)

  
  Examples of search terms which do work properly:
  - contrast
  - screen

This does not affect a base install of Xubuntu, but one that is shared
with other installed sessions that pull in the GNOME Control Center and
the Date Time Indicator.

The GNOME Control Center only displays it's configuration tools inside
of a GNOME or GNOME-like environment, and will just show up blank
anywhere else.

To populate these settings, just launch the control center with the
below command.

env XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=GNOME gnome-control-center

Moving this bug to indicator-datetime since it could be made aware of
the running desktop and gnome-control-center since it seems to be an
intentional functionality of the GNOME desktop.

Good question.

Once you have downloaded the .deb files you can install them directly
and they will replace the existing (newer) version you had installed.
You shouldn't try uninstalling those packages because there are
dependencies on them elsewhere in Ubuntu. Only change the versions that
you have (which will automatically and atomically replace what's there
at present).

To install a bunch of deb files run this command in a terminal:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

or similar.

Title:
No audio on vlc or videos sound or video files

Bug description:
Up until a few weeks ago there was no problem with playing sound from mp3
files. I have a pair of usb speakers. Audio plays Ok on them for video clips
using Chrome (e.g. from BBC website). Using vlc 2.2.2 (from Ubuntu repos),
neither a CD nor DVD (video is Ok) nor mp3 file plays audio. mp3 files play Ok
using Rhythmbox. I've also tried vlc 3.0 with no success.
Interestingly, the standard Videos app (Totem?) also doesn't play sound on
these speakers either of an mp4 file (downloaded from YouTube, though it plays
Ok on YouTube website using Chrome) or a DVD. Clemenetine plays mp3 files Ok. I
first reported this as bug 1752267 as I thought that the problem was with vlc.
On that bug, it was suggested that the problem is with Pulseaudio.
Just now, I've tried to play sound through my monitor's built in speakers
connected by hdmi (though the monitor displays Ok) with no success even though
the built-in speakers play sound using pavucontrol when testing is invoked.

Bug description:
  Immediately after login (I enter the password and hit enter) the screen 
"crumbles" for few seconds, then all becomes normal and the system works fine. 
I have done apt update+upgrade many times, also with proposed enabled, I have 
also installed a new ISO (now i'm using the Alpha dated 20180305) but the 
problem remains. The problem happens with the x11 session but not with wayland. 
  Also problem does not show with different hardware.

Title:
  ubuntu wayland crashes when I attach secondary monitor

  I have a notebook with dual graphic cards: Intel+Nvidia (handled by
  nouveau). The miniDP port is apparently connected to nvidia since it
  stops working when I use nouveau.modeset=0. I am able to start a
  Wayland session when there's no secondary monitor connected; as soon
  as I connect it to miniDP the wayland session crashes and falls back
  to the greeter. The greeter won't even start Wayland session - it
  immediately crashes back to the greeter. Workaround is to use the
  Xorg-based session which works properly with secondary monitor.

Thanks for your replies. As per Daniel's suggestion, I've run apport, &
have updated the bug title and description.

I'll also lodge a bug report upstream as Jeremy suggests, and report
back with a bug number.

Jeremy, you've suggested that there are potentially multiple bugs here -
I'm not sure I agree with this. I hope that by amending the bug
description that I've summed up the over-arching issue, and that filing
a bug report for each instance of the issue wouldn't be necessary.
Please let me know your thoughts on this.

With this in mind, I disagree with Daniel's assertion that the main
issue in this bug report has already been fixed.

  Using Gnome Settings' search tool works for some but not all items

  See attached screenshot. Searching within settings is currently not as
  useful / intuitive as it could be, as it finds results for some items
  located within the top-level menu entries / categories, but not all
  items.

  Being able to find all menu sub-items from the search tool without having to 
pore through individual menus is the ideal outcome, and is my intention in 
raising this bug report - the individual examples below are merely instances of 
this broader pattern. Please note that these examples seem to be changing 
rapidly, as overnight updates have made some search terms return valid results 
when only a few days ago they didn't. 

  Examples of search terms that don't work / work fully:
  - cursor (no items found; should return "Universal Access")
  - high (ditto)
  - sound (only returns the "sound" menu; should also return "Universal Access"
  - sharing (brings up some valid results, but not "Notifications" which 
includes the item "desktop sharing".
  - desktop (ditto)

  
  Examples of search terms which do work properly:
  - contrast
  - screen
  - size

Bug description:
  Immediately after login (I enter the password and hit enter) the screen 
"crumbles" for few seconds, then all becomes normal and the system works fine. 
I have done apt update+upgrade many times, also with proposed enabled, I have 
also installed a new ISO (now i'm using the Alpha dated 20180305) but the 
problem remains. The problem happens with the x11 session but not with wayland. 
  Also problem does not show with different hardware.
