Re: Maintenance of AOO Wiki and Forum

2015-09-11 Thread jan i
I see this mail goes public on dev@ which seems to have changed a lot into
a single person deciding what happens (or at least what is
communicated outside the project). This is of course only my opinon as one
who do not follow the project closely, but I respond accordingly.

If the AOO project finds it easier to define "ordinary maintenance" then
please do so, there are lots of references in the archives as to what that
means, written by myself and other PMC members. If you have specific
questions I am happy to help.

Your description sounds ok (at least for a sales brochure), reality might
be a bit more complicated but not that much. However you avoid the real
problem, the upgrade, in my private opinion the servers need an makeover
for security reasons, but that is my personal opinion (to any hackers: the
servers are currently well protected from the outside due to the https
structure that infra prefers to use)

I understand from other lists, which I cannot refer to, that the AOO chair
(I have not seen it confirmed anywhere from the PMC) is talking with infra,
so I do not understand the background for your question, nor do I want to
interfere in talks between the AOO chair and Infra.

As I have said many times I am part of Infra and part of apache, so
naturally I am available for help when needed, but please do not use me as
a go-between infra and the project.

Hi folks

We should be celebrating our first release, it is getting close and we have
the IPMC votes we need, so now we just need to avoid -1 (binding)..

One of our core developers wrote to me privately asking for advice, instead
of responding privately I respond in here, so it becomes public knowledge.

Wearing my Mentor hat.

I do not want to interfere in any way with who mails what to whom, but at
least one core developer has been offended by a private (offlist) email and
asked me how to handle it.

As mentor, my recommendation is, that if you recieve private emails about
corinthia that you
do not want, reply politely to the email, asking the sender to direct the
email to one of our
mailing lists (Motto: If it did not happen on a mailing list, it did not
happen).

You should not send the email to any ML because it was sent to you in
private, if you
want to prevent further private emails you can write, that emails will in

I strongly suggest at least an expansion, also because the project might
have wishes which I would not see, are be able to facilitate (e.g. change
the login

Sysadm experience brings you a long way, otherwise it is not hard to read

It is vm´s and not physical boxes.

At the moment one of the biggest problems is how to recreate them if they
break. Infra nowadays use Puppet for that purpose. The Vms are defined in
puppet2 but
not puppet3.

[VOTE] Dennis Hamilton as new AOO Chair.

2015-08-15 Thread jan i
This is a call for a formal vote among the 1 candidate for the AOO Chair
role.

Due to the fact that there are only 1 candidate we could use lazy
consensus, but since
some persons might be against that, we will use majority vote, as if there
was multiple candidates.

Voting rules are as follows:
- Only PMC votes are binding, but everybody are welcome to vote
- The nominee with the most +1 (deducted -1) gets elected
- VOTE runs until Sunday August 23th
- As outgoing Chair, I will send resolution to Board August 23th.

Please vote
[ ] +1, I want Dennis Hamilton as new Chair
[ ] +0, I do not care if Dennis Hamilton becomes new Chair
[ ] -1, I am against Dennis Hamilton becomes new chair

Have fun voting.

Maintenance of AOO Wiki and Forum

2015-08-14 Thread jan i
Hi.

The AOO Forum vm could do with an upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04 and be defined in
the new puppet structure. Defining it in the new puppet structure has the
advantage that Infra can roll a new vm in case of problems, and thereby
reducing downtime.

The AOO Wiki vm is in strong need of a reconfiguration and update (Ubuntu
14.04 see above). Currently there is a ATS running on the same vm in front
of the mediawiki (django) application. The ATS veersion is no longer
supported by the traffic server project. Running it on a separate vm (or
even as the HTPPS proxy) has a lot of merit, but it has not been done.

As I am reducing my engagement in the project, this might be a good time
for a new maintainer to step up. The actual maintenance is about 1 hour pr
month.

I would like to help a new maintainer understand the setup, and also have
no problem continuing having access to the vm´s so I can help as
backstopper in case of problems.

I believe it is better for the project to have a person that is active in
the project, and participates on the mailing lists than one who do not read
the ML.

thoughts (or volunteers) ?

no now ldap is used (id.apache.org), but I wonder if the problem could be
that you have old keys on people.

This would normally give you a key invalid error. Since you get the note it
seems key is rejected and it therefore falls back to the password, which is
blocked.

Fastest solution for you is to jump on hip chat with infra, they have the
karma to e.g. remove your old keys.

you wrote you had uploaded the SSH keys to id.apache.org, that is a good
first step.

Next a couple of questions:
- which terminal program do you use ?
I use putty, and had to generate the keys with puttygen, you also have to
remember to
configure the terminal program to use SSH (not telnet) and give a path to
your part of the key.

- What exactly happens ? is your key rejected or do you get some kind of
key error ?

Since I was the cause, let me explain what I tried to write,

I think the work done is very good, and wrote so, and I do not think
anybody asked for it to be deleted.

My concern was the naming 4.1.2 early preview. Thats sounds official (not
as an apache release, but you know that for AOO the binary is downloaded
factors more than the release source tar ball) and I do not want a
confusion to arise between what the release manager does and what
individual committers does.

I think Michael is doing a very important job with preparing builds for the
upcomming release, his work is known here, so much more reason to be
carefull when naming intermidiate builds. Andrea wrote it more direct, this
is a michael build based on the 4.1.0 branch, this is totally correct and
something a lot of people should test.

So I do not think you missed a lot, but as always it is real difficult to
write something without
getting misinterpreted or misunderstood.

Thanks for providing a binary, but I am a bit concerned that a version is
made public, before the PMC have even spoken about being ready to make a
release candidate or started voting on a release candidate.

Is this coordinated with the release manager for 4.1.2 ?

Please do not misunderstand me, I think it is great that work is being
done, I am just surprised we are ready to go public with 4.1.2 even as a
pre-view.

I wrote it in an earlier email, search for digital signing. You need a
verisign account and only andrea has a AOO account and you need a simple
modification of the build procedure.

Andrea wanted to add me earlier but due to I believe some complications it
never happened.

Anyhow the way I suggested digital signing, was an idea which I tested, but
others might have different ideas about how to do it. First step would be
to agree on what should be signed (only the setup exe, the runtime exe, the
runtime dll and jars). A good digital signing (like my proposal) contain it
all.

Re: [DISCUSS] RE: [DISCUSS] Calendar for New chair of AOO

2015-08-04 Thread jan i
Hi

it seems there are different opinions on how to handle the rest of the
chair election process.

I suggested a timeline, in the beginning, but I cannot see consensus, so I
will not change the timeline,
however if any other PMC member wants to do it, then I am positive as long
as we have a solution no
later than the september board meeting.

An alternative (not my preference) could be to start the vote now until
e.g. september 15th, in the understanding that if a second (or more)
candidate turns up, the vote is restarted.

+1 from me, provided the PMC is in agreement on it.

Please remember the original date was 16 August, so there might be
candidates out there waiting (just like Dennis was not nominated the first
day).

In case the PMC decides to close for more candidates, I suggest a 72 hour
(+weekend if needed) lazy consensus, and then I can make the needed
resolution to board,
we might even make it to the August board meeting.

I saw the 250EUR as generic, we briefly discussed it for at least another
event, but you are right it never came to payment time.

I would like to have guidelines, but not really event specific, but a max.
pr person pr event and that is how I saw the 250EUR. We do not need strong
guidelines,
but something should be made, to ensure fairness (e.g. the 250EUR would not
have paid in full my last trip to FOSDEM) and I totally agree with
short-range travel.

Hi

Super to hear we will have presence at one more event, thanks for making it
happen.

I cannot participate, but I can offer
- Apache stickers (if you are running low)
- A big Apache feather poster to hang behind the booth (lending not to keep)

We are finally getting the big apache feather poster available here in
europe (big thanks
to Sally for sponsoring this from the marketing budget).

If you want I can get it sent to you after ACEU, and you either return it
or keep it to FOSDEM.

Please also remember AOO still have an account with money, to be spent for
marketing, so
if you need AOO related material it is possible.

[DISCUSS] Would you like to be the new chair of AOO ?

2015-07-30 Thread jan i
Hi.

I will resign at the board meeting in September, so the current schedule
looks like:
Accept/Nominate/Discuss candidates until August 16th
Discussion ends August 23th
Voting ends September 4th
Resolution send to board September 5th.
New chair takes over immediately after the board meeting.

The reason for my resignation is an ongoing disagreement between part of
the PMC
and myself. I expected the PMC to be willing to make changes when I was
elected,
but at least my way seems to be counterproductive. The 2 main discrepancies
are:
- the board reports which, even though discussed publicly, have been the
cause of
negative discussions after being sent to board
- the attempt to make a cooperation with LO, caused many discussions, but
ended
with adding restrictions, that made it impossible for me to continue the
attempt.
I do not want to go deeper into details, since it does not help finding a
new chair.

As a volunteer I want to work, where the work makes a positive difference,
and not cause
endless negative discussions. I hope a new chair can help unite the PMC and
help drive
the project forward.

The PMC was informed about this July 24th, and after some discussions,
the time has come to find new candidates.

Please use this mail thread to announce yourself as a candidate, or to
nominate
someone else (remark that person must state whether or not the nomination is
accepted). There are no formal limits to being a nominee, apart from
committer
status.

The rules for the vote, will depend on the number of candidates but is
basically
a majority vote, with PMC votes being binding.

at least your LIBPATH to gcc is not correct. I guess you cannot link a
simple "hello world" program. Kernel32 as well as the ms* is system
libraries.

None was done with buildbot.

I do however have no idea what you would do on a dedicated vm. The
buildbots can be reconfigured in a single file. You basically just need to
update the configure statement, I do
not know where we store the release config, I have asked that question in
here several times.

Digital signing, can be done from any machine (apache or private). One way
is to follow the steps I outlined in here a year ago.

Re: Buildbot: buildslave aoo_mac-mini was lost

Isn´t it about time we got it configured with the AOO stuff.

Once we have that configured, then the buildbots cover our releases, and we
need no longer depend on local machines.

Fwd: Time to propose a CS Capstone Project!

Hi.

I have just received this, do we want to participate ?

I have participated earlier with mixed results.

Subject: Time to propose a CS Capstone Project!
To: j...@apache.org

Colleagues --

Have you always wanted a particular software tool developed for your use,
but
have never had the time to do it yourself? Well then, read on. Have I got a
deal
for you!

My name is Kevin McGrath. I am the instructor who runs the OSU Computer
Science
Senior Capstone class. The Capstone class is a 3-quarter (Fall, Winter,
Spring)
"career preparation" experience. The major piece of this is doing a
significant
3 member team project.

When the students come to the first class on September 24, I want to present
them with a list of exciting, creative, and real-experience software
engineering
project possibilities. This is where you come in. I am looking for you to
use
your needs and experience to propose those project possibilities.

A web site has been setup to give you more information, and let you enter
and
edit your project proposals:

http://eecs.oregonstate.edu/capstone/submission/

You have until September 24 to get yours in. That is the date the students
will
see them, and will start the selection process. In that process, I ask the
students to "bid" on their top 5 choices. I ultimately make the final
project
assignments, but I try to take their preferences into account. I find I get
better results that way.

There will likely be more projects proposed than students teams to do them.
*So,
really sell your project.* Definitely don't understate its cool-ness
factor! The
more excited you sound in the description, the more excited they are likely
to
be when doing it. Excitement is contagious!

After projects have been selected, we will follow a client-contractor model
in
which I "run" the software contract company and you are one of our valued
clients. The students "report" to me, but you, as client, work directly with
them to design the requirements, set the timeline, approve the progress. You
also get to help assign grades.

This year I'm asking you to explicitly distinguish the projects that are
research oriented vs. those that are more software engineering focused. If
you
would like to propose a research project for the students, please indicate
this
using the Additional Comments field.

Given the nature of a research oriented project, I find that better results
are
had if the students are initially aware of the type of project. If you are
unsure, that is not a problem. I'm happy to work with you on the details of
your
project -- just submit it, and then we can chat about any changes that
might be
necessary.

Any project can be proposed from anybody. I don't care where you are from,
just
that your project represents an excellent software engineering experience
for
the students.

Do remember, however, that these are seniors. They have taken the core
classes
so far, but most have not taken some of the electives that would really
help in
some projects, such as graphics, AI, computer vision, etc. Keep that in mind
when proposing.

If you have questions or want to discuss project possibilities, feel free to
contact me at:

 D. Kevin McGrath

Thanks for your time -- I look forward to working with you!

I am lost in all these branches and tags, but I have one position, we run
rat scan on the release candidate and any problems is the same as a no-go
for release. If rat-scan is clean, whether or not these files are includes
I am happy and so it the legal side of apache.

I would really prefer we use the buildbots, it has a couple of advantages:
- We are 100% sure about the environment and that we can reproduce the
exact same build if needed
- Our buildbot get our release configuration, which means in future we
build a release candidate every night (of course not to be released)
- It is simple to switch the SVN pointer from trunk to branch, and then we
should have all platforms covered.
- we can save a lengthy upload, because the buildbot generate exe on apache
disks.

if yes, then we should also tell it, if not what are the implications ?

I thought ODF 1.2 was relative old, but I might be wrong.

I am not sure how the procedure works, but we need to secure that the

In my opinion, we also need to run a rat-scan on the final release

how do we remember this?

Re: Rat Patch take 2

2015-07-14 Thread jan i
Hi Gavin.

I am sorry you are experiencing a delay in getting the patch committed.

I have had a look at the patch, and to me it looks perfect. I would commit
the patch if I could,
but I am currently limited to my ipad (my development system, decided to
take a heat holiday).

I am convinced when one of the others get a couple of spare cycles they
will commit the patch.

Thanks for taking time to make the correction.

Re: [RELEASE] Contents of OpenOffice 4.1.2

2015-07-13 Thread jan i
Hi

I agree to use this as the overall plan, which of course needs to detailed.

I do have a comment about digital signing. It is correct than I do not have
spare
cycles before mid october.

Digital signing means in reality white listing the content, which are both
our
exe as well as many third part DLLs (some of the libraries are statically
linked
and not exposed outside the exe).

Most of our third party libraries are pretty old (but works well for our
purpose),
and some of them have known security isses (not in the parts AOO uses). We
need to upgrade the libraries that uses a DLL, otherwise we might whitelist
a
DLL with known security issues. This process is something we should do
ahead of every release, and is not as such part of the digital signing, but
digital
signing makes it much more important.

In my opinion we should change branch, I dont like reusing 410 because if

the difference is the selection process, once we have schedule there are no
difference. The people who build tracks select the talks with little
influence from other reviewers, whereas the rest of the talks are in one
big group, giving a single talk more competition. In case of AOO it means
that without a track it is less likely that all talks will be accepted
(remark, I only
talk theory here, the selection process is just starting).

hope that explains the difference

Nobody from OpenOffice stepped up to build a track, or to help review, so

Allow me to correct your statement, it is not unresolved. We discussed it
on this
list and a workaround has been provided. That is the important part, had we
not issued a workaround (and please do remember the theoretical nature of
the problem), then it would have been escalated through other channels.

But apart from that it is not custom to mention CVE in board reports,
independent
of their status.

I have nothing against mentioning it, if the community at large feels it is
needed,
even though it would be exceptional.

I would be very careful about interpreting the above extract. The plugins
do contains quite a lot of code, and some of them like the dictionaries are
not really
optional. We actually deliver plugins as part of our own exe, so we do
distribute some of the plugins without a special license.

But legal has looked at what we deliver and accepted it, so no need to
detail that further.

You also use the word "narrowness", as if these exceptions are written in
stone, that is not the case, we can always ask for other exceptions if
needed (whether
we get them is a different matter).

I can follow your other points but not this one. Apache does pr rule not do
binary releases. If a binary is provided it is a convenience NOT a release.
Single PMC members (or others) might provide binary releases on their own
behalf.

This is actually a point where the AOO PMC walk on a very sharp sword, so
the wording here is extremely important.

I find your other point very good discussions point, so maybe we should
leave the binary release for a moment.

I actually do not see the problem, bugzilla/subversion are as such is also
public, and anybody can go in and read the content, even without a user.

A hachathon or at least a meetup would be a nice thing. It is sure I will
be there, but I do not
know who else.

If you (or others) want to reserve space for a hackathon, please put it on

or mail me the information, then I can add it.

"official" hackathon will be added to the scheduler.

We do have a windows buildbot that could be configured to generate the
executable.

In general we should use buildbots for generating releases since it is a
known environment,
whereas a private setup is more difficult to verify.

Nobody has volunteered to make a openoffice track, and looking at cfp, it
seems we
might end up without any aoo talks.

if it not ok to commit the patch, then I wonder how the files was committed
in the first place.

If it is not ok, then the files should be deleted. We cannot have files in
trunk without the proper
ALv2 license.

Furthermore we cannot make a release with these files.

I recommend applying the patch. Deleting the files might have sideeffects.

Juergen Schmidt was the release manager for the latest AOO releases so the
key is valid.

If you use our official mirror through www.openoffice.org you should see

You should be aware that the centos 64bit vm never got a full installation
it was an experiment to see if we (infra) could get puppet to work.

+1, and I am convinced that as soon as we get what we already have
operational,
infra will not be a release-blocker if we need additional buildbots.

Looking at other threads, it seems our Mac buildbots are in the process of
being
configured, does anybody have a planned ETA ?

Who can/will look at the windows buildbot, it seems svn is not working ?

We also need to reconfigure all buildbots to run with release config.

I am quite busy with a couple of other things, so I do not have spare
cycles at the
moment.

I think we were lucky that gmcdonald used some of his private time to help
get
some of the buildbots back online.

I do believe we have used all our "free mileage" and more with infra, we
should
get our own parts in order before requesting more resources.

As far as I know, macOs is also part of our release, and I believe the Mac
Boxes
are still not operational, so maybe we should start there. Once the
buildbots we
have run, then it is time to expand.

a fast check on status says:
fbsd failed
win7 failed
mac cannot be found

Please also do not forget we have files on trunk (reported by gmcdonald)
that misses
a license header, that is a real release blocker.

Hi.

I have had the chance of testing your tool earlier, and I see it as a handy

With my AOO hat on, I do not think it fits in the project. I do think it is

I will respond further on the corinthia dev list.

Hi.

I am very confused.

I have not used, nor do I use coverity scan ! Is this an unrequested

I know that Apache OpenOffice used to use these scans, but I have no idea

I have asked to be removed from your mail database before, please make it

In my opinion "svn up" should do just fine now (I use it on ubuntu and

Thank you for the comments.

It is funny having worked with big closed source companies I have always
found that the openSource world is more open to changes.

However there is an important point which you might have missed. OpenSource
is a world of doers, we are not told what to do (like in companies), so if
you really want to change things you need to involve yourself.

In your case you could e.g.
- write specific design changes as bugzilla issues
- offer to help with testing
- maybe do some of the design
and not forgetting documenting it.

kay@ do you happen to have the config options we use for releases on the
different platforms?

Changing the builddbots to use our release configuration, will help with
the other problems gav sees (I think). More importantly doong sowould mean
we could use the binaries in our releases.

I just had a look, all the files should really have ALv2 added. I wonder
what happened, because I know a couple of these files used
to have ALv2. I will take a look at "svn log" later.

The archives however is covered by the general LICENSE file, when we make a
distribution.

Moving forward.

2015-04-27 Thread jan i
Hi all.

Board report for Q1 is behind us now and the negative articles (which we
knew would be the
consequence of being honest) are probably also behind us.

Time to think on the near future. Our next report is due in a little more
than 2 Months, I sure hope
we can make that positive and show that we are not dying (albeit having
difficulties).

I see a couple of items that need immediate attention:
- Define (in BZ) which incidents goes into version 4.1.2
- Make a patch, resolving the latest security issue which we published
- Appoint a release manager
- Get the test team ready to test a release candidate
- Prepare a meeting of openOffice projects (independent of their relation
to AOO)

Considering how long we have been talking about 4.1.2, it should be
possible to have the release
out before start of July.

Is anybody volunteering to head one or more of the above items ?

I am exploiting possibilities to fast forward our source code, but this a
not a short term action.

Thanks, being open has it´s drawbacks. The whole community participated in
making the report, something I strongly prefer, and he
used (against advice) not the final version, which is significantly
different, but the version that fitted his message best.

I do not believe being secret about our challenges is the right way, even
though such articles are not pleasant reading. We will always have
people who misuse drafts, but I am not prepared to make reports with only a
little circle of people. We are an open community and I for one
am proud that we dare discuss openly.

The facts of the report are correct, they can be found by studying this ML.

Instead of discussion how unfair life is, let us all, use this as a turning
point, to get the activity levels up where they belong.

I had a lot of positive input at apacheCON Austin, and it is my hope that
some of it turn into realities.

ApacheCON Austin status.

2015-04-18 Thread jan i
Hi all.

ApacheCON Austin is now history, but what a conference.
I actually got to see and touch the original feather.

The keynotes was as usual of high quality, the videos will be uploaded
on youtube. There was especially one keynote, that addressed behavior
on the mailing lists, it talked (in good US terminology) about grouping the
mails in DEFCON1-5 based on the tone used. I admit that I learned a couple
of simple things how not to escalate a situation..

AOO did not have presentations, but I talked with many about AOO.

I had short a talk with Danese Cooper, who gave me some interesting input,
but far too short.

I had a long and interesting talk with Zaheda Bhorat, who filled some of my
gaps around the period of the split and the beginning of OpenOffice. She has
worked with the British Government, who then selected the odf standard. She
had some real interesting user views, about the split between AOO and
TDF/LO.
She had ideas on how the future should look like, and to me, it was very
interesting
to get a non-technical user opinion.

I also had the opportunity to talk with several board members about our
current status. The current board report triggered an awareness that we
(AOO) need to move faster in changing our situation. I also got a
confirmation,
that such decisions come from the community and not the board, the board
observe and help (if requested).

I had hoped to meet other AOOers, but hope I will see a lot of you in
Budapest
(september 28 - october 1).

Looking at the comments in the above issues scares me a bit.

Two things:
- I thought 4.1.2 would be used to release non-released languages that was
ready, why wait for 4.2
- We aligned pootle with trunk preparing for 4.2, but honestly have anybody
looked at whether or not these
files are directly useable (or with minor corrections) for 4.1.2.

We do not have a lot of development patches for 4.1.2, so let us at least
release languages that are ready.

Of course this is only my opinion.

+1 The cwiki is a 2 step, The user creates an account, then the admin
whitelist it.

we used to have a page in wiki.o.a.o (register) that asked you to send an
email to dev@

I see no reason why it should not be ok. Plugins are part of our eco
system, and promoting a plugin is good promotion.

We do not have a special key, for that purpose.

"comes closer" can be seen as tomorrow, but you are also right about
"beta", so it is changed to "4.1.2 is ready for internal testing"
"may" changed to "want to".

updated, but changed to "Andrea remains an active PMC member". You are
more than just active in the project.

No error, the board cannot do anything about it, therefore it is not a
board issue. I had to consult on this one, but "issues" are for things the
board should
take action on.

Re: IMPORTANT: Board report second version.

2015-04-06 Thread jan i
Hi

Sorry for top posting.

I have just been made aware, that my understanding of chair role was wrong.
The Chair has the responsibility to make the board report:

"The report is mainly about the status of the project, together with any
community and legal issues or other general impediments. If there are
issues requiring board assistance, then make that apparent, separate from
any general project news. You can seek input from your PMC, but it is
mainly your report to the board. The chair does not report to the PMC- the
chair reports to the board (i.e. ultimately to the ASF membership)."

Therefore I have updated the report, based on the comments I have received
so far, by making sure it still highlight our problems, but also what we do
to counter them.

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/2015+Apr

The report timing is:
April 8, the report must be in the board agenda (I will add it today, to
stop discussion in another ML)
April 13, last chance to update the report in the board agenda (this is
likely to change to 22th)

As the quote above says "You can seek input from the PMC"; and I would like
to hear comments which I can incorporate in the report.

thanks in advance, and sorry for the confusion.

jan I.
