Unplug the unit.

While plugging the unit back in hold down the (+) key on the remote.

You should see the words 'Factory Reset' on the front if it was
executed correctly.

MySQL shouldn't write to the main filesystem. /ftmp/ very likely can't be

Re: [slim] Help: IRBlaster and Volume Up

2008-05-21 Thread fcm4711

Hey Mike

I had the issue myself until I've set the max to 60 (instead of 100).

After reading your first post again I get the impression that there
might be another issue as I think the behavior you describe using the
Test button looks odd. I cannot see why it would work only once for
volume up.

Pressing the test button sends out the corresponding ir command
directly regardless of the current volume or max volume set so it
should work in both directions and also multiple times.

Did you learn the ir commands or did you find an appropriate file on
lirc.org?

Have you tried to slightly move and reattach the ir emitter? The signal
could be too strong or too weak for the ir receiver and depending on the
ir pattern it could overload it.

Felix

[slim] Random or shuffle play a playlist

2008-05-21 Thread SqueezeMyBox

First, hello to everybody, this is my first post.

I am new to squeezebox and after reading about it I went down to
Tottenham Court road and bought myself a shiny new Squeezebox Duet, and
I love it, even the wife is impressed.

AnywayI have a playlist setup which I have as my alarm for in the
morning, the playlist contains around 50 tunes, is it possible to have
this on random, so that Monday I may get song10, Tuesday, song2, etc
etc?

PS. I am using 7.0.1 SqueezeCenter, with my Controller and Receiver
being on the most current version available.

Thanks in advance

As my scrolling on RSS feeds was choppy I made some changes, following

Thanks Peter! This helped a lot:

 basedir = /mnt/Media/slimnas/squeezecenter/MySQL
 datadir = /mnt/Media/slimnas/var/squeezecenter/Cache/MySQL

tmpdir isn't defined. Don't know why this worked for me, but there's a bug in
usr/www/functions.inc:

change the following line:
$mytt = {$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/squeezecenter/Cache/MySQL/my.tt;

to:
$mytt = {$config['slimserver']['rootfolder']}/squeezecenter/MySQL/my.tt;

Then restart SC. This should fix the issue (though I can't test it right now).

I'm really sorry for this bug :-(. Should not have happened. Will try to create
a new build tonight.

Hey don't be so hard on yourself. You can't test every form of
installation (tak it from someone who has developed systems for 20
years). I am just glad that you want to take the effort to make SC run
on FreeNAS. Without that I would be forced to invest my money in a new
computer instead of the old one that runs things now. Which by the way
is doing it perfectly.
But I think I will setup a WM image with FreeNAS/SlimNAS on it for test
purposes so it won't affect my running installation.

Somehow it screwed up the SBC as well because it got downgraded to a
version that won't connect to the SBR.

[slim] FLAC -DRM Free Music

2008-05-21 Thread bobharp

I have purchased a few songs (MP3s) from Amazon in the past but usually
balk getting a lossy copy of a song. ~99.5% of my collection is FLAC
ripped from my CD collection.
I thought I'd post a note about my purchase experience of a FLAC album
through Nettwerk Record's Store
(http://www.werkshop.com/store/home.action).

I decided to purchase the FLAC edition of Sarah McLachlan's Rarities,
B-Sides and Other Stuff - Volume 2 released in April 08. $10.99 (US
Dollar)

For this album the site had track samples via real audio and the
ability to purchase individual mp3 tracks but alas not individual FLAC
tracks. I was really interested in picking up her cover of the Beatles
Blackbird (also in the I Am Sam movie soundtrack). With only a few of
the songs of little interest to me I made the purchase.
The ZIP file download was quick enough (~650MB). The FLAC songs file
names were not to my liking but were easily changed. What really
surprised me was the lack of TAGs. This was readily corrected via
foobar2000's freedb tagger. With the files/songs properly tagged I
rescanned and all was well.
The album sounds fantastic (not that I could really tell the difference
between a FLAC and a ~160kb mp3). I prefer the FLAC so I can transcode
those files/songs to play on other devices/media (CD-Rs for the car, SD
card for my palm).
I love that Nettwerk provides access to the majority of their artists
via their own store. Overall the experience was painless. Obviously
the files need to be properly tagged before they can be picked up by
SqueezeCenter. One just has to make that part of the process just like
you would with a ripped CD.

Sorry but no, that's not true. Rhapsody and Napster use WMA DRM for

Rhapsody has a proprietary DRM scheme for streaming via Rhapsody

Re: [slim] Help: IRBlaster and Volume Up

2008-05-21 Thread mikes

Felix,

I had to learn the IR commands. I am not using an emitter. My pre-amp
has a mini-jack input for accepting IR commands.

I was assuming there is no problem with my equipment set-up or the IR
commands that I learned because when I use the SB3 IR Remote and press
volume up it works just fine. The problem is only from SC (player
control web page, test button on the plug-in page, via the SBC). Does
that theory make sense?

I wonder what else is different about our set ups that setting the max
volume to 60 worked for you. Would I need to restart SC after doing
that? When I tried setting the max to 60, it definitely changed the
max, but it still behaved as I described in my message above.

I am now running:
SqueezeCenter Version: 7.0.2 - 19924 @ Wed May 21 00:42:13 PDT 2008 -
Debian - EN - utf8
IR-Blaster 5.2
Ubuntu 7.10

Thanks for the help,

[slim] Different skins based on incoming client IP address?

2008-05-21 Thread apb

I'm experimenting with controlling my Transporter with my Nokia phone
(it has WiFi and a browser). I can connect just fine to port 9000 on
the server machine using the built-in browser on the phone. However, to
get this to work I have to set the skin to Handheld or I get out of
memory errors. But then when I use SqueezeCenter on the main machine I
have a stupidly ugly skin. Is there a way to configure the skin that
SqueezeCenter uses based on the IP address of the request, or maybe a
different url that will skin it differently? A url like

Re: [slim] SBC r2448 less stable ?

2008-05-21 Thread bpa

Open a bug report in bugs.slimdevices.com if you want proper dialogue.

However it may be worth checking if disabling Wireless Power Saving
under Setting/Advanced/Power management (or perhaps factory test) makes
any difference. I had a laptop once that kept dropping off a WLAN and
problem was related to power management and a brand of router.
Disabling WPS will reduce battery life very significantly so it is for
diagnosis not a fix.

Do you have some specific feature in mind that you like to implement ?

There is an architectural overview available focused on the SqueezeOS
part here:

If you are interested in other parts of the software someone could
probably describe it for you, but in that case it would help to know
what feature you are trying to accomplish.

Then if that is the case, filtering by IP is going to have exaclty the
same problem. And it is going to need to be constantly updated to
handle new devices or changes in IP. Skins based on the user agent is
the best way to do this.

appending the skin name to the server URL is a feature thats feen there
for years, since the skin engine was implimented even. It is case
sensative though.

Hi. Yes, I'd like the ability to run both systems at the same time and
playing the same music.

My main listening area I want to run analog signals from the
transporter. I plan to use the transporter's XLR and RCA at the same
time.

In the home theater I use the Diva for digital processing, so I'm
planning to use a digital connection from the transporter.

Question: Do the XLR, RCA, and Digital all output at the same time?
I've read the XLR/RCA do, but have not found anything on the digital

Question: I believe my only downside to the above plan is lack of
volume control between the transporter and the music room amplifier.
For now I'll have to use the transporter volume control.

The real beauty of the TP/SB is that all the outputs are active with no
messing about with settings or selecting an output.

I also have to side with the feeling that the DAC in the TP would
probably be better then your HT Rxcr. Try using the analog outs into
the AUX or CD input of your Rxcr then listen to the digital input into
the Rxcr to see which gives a better level of enjoyment. If it is just
for background sound during a party or before or after a movie then
just go digital.

I have an older HT Rxcr with an older Burr-Brown Chip processing the
Toslink input. Its a good chip for the HT Rxcr but anybody can hear the
difference between it and feeding the Rxcr with the analog out of the
TP. The analog out has a sharp accurate sound stage with more defined
bass and clearer treble.

Re: [slim] SBC r2448 less stable ?

2008-05-21 Thread PVM

Hi all,

I might be barking up the wrong tree but I think I know what the
problem is. If you are using a PC or laptop to stream your music from
and you switch off the PC or laptop while controller is connected to it
then you have lost connection.

If you connect controller to Squeezenetwork before switching off your
PC or laptop then it will boot up into squeezenetwork straight away. (I
think).

I have had my Duet for a few weeks now and my wife thinks I have a
mistress the way I talk about it. I love the fact that it is fallible
as it gives me something to ponder over and challenges my limited
knowledge and intelligence. If the truth be known, most of the people
on this forum who understand that this is an evolving bit of kit love
its idiosyncrises (I think I spelt that wrong) because it represents a
challenge.(I also play music through it sometimes). Can't wait until I
can connect a 3.5mm bluetooth transmitter to my controller and connect
to my Sony DR BT50 headphones out in the garden.

Hope the info I have given helps

[slim] How do you use your Squeezebox Controller?

2008-05-21 Thread Dylan Rhodes

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the
results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=47945

Question: How do you primarily use your Squeezebox Controller?

- I usually place it back in the cradle after I've selected my music
- It tends to follow me around the house

We've had some discussions in the office about how we use our Squeezebox
Controllers at home, and I'd like to learn more about how our customers'
use matches up with the informal straw poll I've taken.

In my case, most of time, I'll walk up to the Controller, remove it
from the charging cradle, select my music (usually a Pandora or
Rhapsody station), then place it back in the cradle and go about my
business. Occasionally I'll grab the Controller and take it with me, so
I can fine tune my programming wherever I'm sitting. But most of the
time, the Controller stays in the cradle.

Please feel free to post a message elaborating on your answer.

When I listening to music I keep the Controller with me, especially if I
have it on random or Pandora. So mine only goes back on the cradle when
I've stopped listening.

I'm surprised that using music services you don't keep the Controller
with you. Do you not find you need to skip tracks reasonably regularly
?

Question: How do you primarily use your Squeezebox Controller?

- I usually place it back in the cradle after I've selected my music
- It tends to follow me around the house

andynormancx;304038 Wrote:
I'm surprised that using music services you don't keep the Controller
with you. Do you not find you need to skip tracks reasonably regularly
 ?

It depends on my mood. With the Rhapsody channels I generally like
everything that I hear, so when I have a compelling desire to skip
tracks, I don't mind walking over to the cradle. My Pandora stations
are pretty well aged so I don't need to use Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down as
much as I used to. But they'll occasionally go off in strange musical
directions and I have to get skippy. When that happens I do what you
do... grab the Controller and take it with me to wherever I'm hanging
out.

My controller is next to the bed. I use it to brows music and then make
a selection. Generally it's then replaced in its cradle.

It hardly moves around the house as I have a ProntoPro for that so it's
never from being recharged.

In addition, I often listen to Slacker as the last thing before going

power cycle of the controller is required.

Mine comes out of the base when I start listening and then spends about

I'm taking it out of the cradle when coming home, turning on my stereo.
It then lies around the living room until battery empty or end of the

I always cradle my SBC, and I know where I developed that habit-- from

For some reason I can't transfer this habit to my cordless phones

Hi there. I'm pleased to see this getting discussed here. These kinds
of issues are precisely what we need to hear about when people run into
them. Just to let you know, our QA department is investigating these
reports but so far has not been able to reproduce them. That may mean
we simply need more information from those that are seeing this.

A couple things maybe you can tell us:

* When you set the Controller down and it loses connection (blue wifi

charging cradle?

* Is the server being shut down and then restarted at a later time?
Or is the server going to sleep/hibernate?

* When you upgraded to 7.0.1, did you install on top of 7.0, or did
you do a clean install after removing 7.0?

Let us know. We will continue to keep a close eye on this.

My SBC comes out of the cradle in the morning. I use it where the
player I am listening to is. At the end of the day, it ends up back in
the bedroom. After about 3 days, instead of being in the bedroom all
night, it goes Back in the Cradle again for the night. Repeat.

I can almost hear Steven Tyler singing Back in the Cradle. I'm back,
I'm back in the cradle again. I'm back, I'm back in the cradle again.
I'm shining up my Controller.

My main listening area I want to run analog signals from the

You are missing the point I am trying to make:

Will there be a noticeable difference between the out put of the DAC on
the transporter and your home-theater-amp? I'm not talking about how
good it sounds - I'm talking about delay.

There's bound to be some difference - will that be a problem? It might
sound like you are in a stadium. Or it might not be noticeable.

Look, the DAC is a computer thing. One chip maker might buffer up 1024
bytes and another 2048. If you are sampling at 42KHz thats a difference
of about 1/40 of a second. Not much. But I'm just guessing at the
numbers. If the difference was more like 32K bytes verses 64K, now the
difference is more like 3/4 of a second.

Also, do you rip to FLAC? The transporter should be able to directly
decode FLAC, but what will the transporter output on the SPDIF port?
Anyone know? I would think FLAC isn't supported much if at all in the
commercial world.

Try it, see if it works.

1) I don't remember the Controller losing connection when I set it

2) No, the server is up 24 hours a day.

Re: [slim] Help: IRBlaster and Volume Up

2008-05-21 Thread mikes

Felix,

Your last post made me think some more. When using the SB3 IR remote
if I press hold volume down it continues to decrease the volume on my
pre-amp as you would expect. With Volume Up it only increases the
volume once when you hod it down. You then have to release and press
volume up again on the SB3 IR remote to get it to continue increasing
the volume. My pre-amp has a display that show the volume attenuation
in DB.

Could this be a problem with my pre-amp not understanding the repeated
IR command for volume up? It seems odd that it works for volume down,
but not up. Could this be related to the fact that from SC I can only
get the volume to go up one click? The difference with SC is you are
not holding it down, but making individual clicks. With the Test
button on your plugin page I can get the volume to go up once and each
subsequent click of the test button does nothing. If I click volume
down test button (which works fine with repeated clicks), I can then
get one more click on the volume up test button. Would this scenario
be similar the behavior I described with the SB3 IR remote?

Any suggestions? I attached a copy of raw IR codes if that will help
at all. I stuck .txt at the end so I could attach it.

Thanks for the help,
--mike

I keep in on a table or otherwise near me. In fact, the SBC has
actually changed how I use my SB2's quite a bit. I find that I
actually listen via SB2 more often and I use it more interactively. I
previously would select an album/playlist/station/etc and let it play.
With the SBC I spend a lot more time jumping around, skipping songs,
etc. I also love the SBC's Now Playing display when I'm listening to
Slacker or another music service and want to check on the artist or

Have you E-mailed Tech Support or called them? This is the Users Forum,
not Tech Support. Could somebody have the answer for you here, they
could. But Tech Support is where the answer is for sure and probably in

For possible help here, the Forum is going to need more information.
What OS is the server running. What version of SC? What firmware is on

However, I now want to put some more Squeezebox receivers around the

they will be available in Australia to be bought separately? I see
they are not listed on the Australian Logitech website.

[slim] Somebody has to say it.

2008-05-21 Thread random_tox

I'm a loyal customer. I've owned at least 5 Squeezeboxes over the years
and currently (try to) use two SB3's in my home, and softsqueeze at the
office. I've been an advocate and sold many friends on the products and
concepts of Slimdevices. I still plan to go big and get a Transporter
just as soon as there is software to match that incredible piece of
equipment.

But I'm after a long, blissful, year of enjoying a well tuned
Slimserver 6.5.something and ignoring updates, I made the mistake of
trying 7.0. I'm going to vent. I'm sincerely not trying to offend, but
maybe light a fire.

Here's my list of what is dumb:

-Software reliability: Please call a beta version (buggy, untested,
unreliable, even though a few of us geeks can get it running) a beta
version. Don't make it the default download until you have some
indication that it is going to work for your customers. Helping
troubleshoot my job and not a hobby I enjoy when I'm trying to listen
to music. and I just want the latest version that will actually work.
6.5.x, right? 7.x is beta. Release candidate, tops. Your not under the
same pressure as a software company to release, release, release.
You're hardware is only as reliable as your software and sales will
suffer.

-Effects and animation: You know how we all make fun of flaming
animated .GIF images on crappy amature webpages? Same thing. Just
because it's neat doesn't mean you have to put it in. These features
serve only to remind us that you've been using your resources to
integrate spinning CD images instead of fixing bugs and improving
performance. It's a browser interface, not a feature film. Present the
information quickly and orderly. No one is impressed by a chunky, slow
transparent overlay that doesn't present anything useful. Why do you
think Vista (Window XP, Millenium Ed.) is tanking?

-Settings: I was very happy to read that supposedly 7.X would keep my
previous settings. Wrong. I can't even get it to run without a complete
nuke of the previous install, which nukes my settings. Also, it's dumb
that after all these years, I still have to set each player's settings
individually each time I upgrade versions. Give us a persistant
default player settings interface as well as individual player
settings. And god, would someone re-org the settings? There must be 50
pages worth that are in nearly random order.

-Slim Network requirement: Give me a break. I'm sure many people find
the Slim Network a useful service, but there is no reason these devices
can't operate without any communication beyond their local network if
that's what the user wants. I don't want to give you an address, or
password, or info about when my player is on or off, or anything. You
got my money and that the only demographic info you need.

-tray icon: Just what the world needs. One more tray icon that does
nothing useful (unless you count starting... starting... starting
indefinately until I uninstall/reinstall as useful). What is the
fascination? Did the marketing department come up with it? Why does it
take 13 megs of memory 24/7 to tell me nothing I don't already know?

-Slim/Logitech: You guys/gals are acting dumb. How can the company that
hatched such a brilliant product concept still be mired with such a
crappy, unfriendly software implimentation? I'm a vetran technology pro
and I find your stuff is a pain in the butt. How can I recommend it to
technically moderate family and friends that need something to be
intuitive and easy and works out of the box? Every home should have
several of you devices, but your ship will sink first if you take
another x years to publish a decent interface.

-Me: I'm dumb for wasting my time writing this. Won't change anything.
Probably get sensored.

-Me again: I'm also dumb for upgrading to 7. Let me know when it's
7.5.x. I'll be back on 6.5ish.

Re: [slim] Upgrade Slimnas

2008-05-21 Thread MrSlim

Hey Michael,
I'd like to commend you on your timing on fixing this issue..
Yesterday I had finally gotten around to attempting to set up SlimNAS
on a box that I had installed FreeNAS on several months ago, and ran
into this very issue of the library scanning. I was only getting 2
albums before it would konk out..
Anyway, that is fixed, and using squeezecenter-7.01 the scan went
through fine in a matter of minutes.. Happy happy joy joy.. ;)

Being the hopeful type, I also tried the 7.1 nightly build (7.1-19938),
but that one won't install (it always says Squeezecenter is not
available)

If you are sampling at 42KHz thats a
 difference
of about 1/40 of a second. Not much. But I'm just guessing at the
numbers. If the difference was more like 32K bytes verses 64K, now the

difference is more like 3/4 of a second.

Also, do you rip to FLAC? The transporter should be able to directly
decode FLAC, but what will the transporter output on the SPDIF port?
Anyone know? I would think FLAC isn't supported much if at all in the
 commercial world.

Try it, see if it works.

The digital outs of all our products are always in unencoded PCM
format. The file is always decoded first, before it heads out of the
output in either digital or analog.

I've been running 7.0 for ages. It works fine for me.
Debian, mostly dedicated server.

I keep the unstable testing repository in my sources list, and keep
trying the known unstable stuff.

I have far fewer problems with the beta code than you seem to be with
the production code.

I don't know the reason, but my experience doesn't match yours at all,
not even in the least bit.

Re: [slim] Receiver not finding server anymore

2008-05-21 Thread BrockStone

Ah I figured lots of experienced people here may know the answer, hence
why I asked here. The odd part is it was working for a while, then
stopped.

OS is Windows XP
Network config is a standard internal LAN with a router to the outside
world, nothing special other than a WDS router in the mix but that was
there before.
Latest firmwares and latest SC.

Anyways, my main question wasn't please help me solve it, it was
where does the SBR get the IP for the SC from? It must get it from
somewhere. Autodiscovery? From SqueezeNetwork? Where-ever it's being
sent from or fetched from it's wrong and that's what I'd like to find
out. In my experiences tech supports are relatively poor at helping
with specific questions like that.

Cheers

BrockStone wrote:

I don't know the technical details. I do know that my Receiver was not
working when my WiFi network went bonkers. I have a mostly wired
network, internal NAT, 172.16/16 address. Worked great until my Wireless
Access Point died. So I got a new Linksys WRT54GL and tried to set it
up. I had problems from the start. Long story short, the WRT worked fine
as a WAP for my laptops, but not my Controller nor my Receiver.

The initial setup had the WAP assign a 192.168.1.0/24 address, with
routing to my 172.16 network. Neither the Controller nor the Receiver
could find my SqueezeCenter, which had a fixed 172.16.4.10 address.

It took a while before I figured out how to get DD-WRT to work as a pure
WAP, so both the wired and WiFi side lived in the 172.16 space. Once
that was working, life was good.

I turned on the Controller, it got a DHCP address, found the
SqueezeCenter, did an update to the software and worked.

I plugged in my Receiver, it got a DHCP address, found the SqueezeCenter
and started playing tunes.

It probably was a network problem, probably that my 172.16.4.1 was not
spraying messages out to the SqueezeCenter. But I'm not a serious IP
networking guru.

So check your network, make sure its all routing properly.

And the support folks at SlimDevices are far better than the average bear.

I've had no such problems.

Which animated gifs are we talking about?
They must be really subtle cause I don't notice them.
Realistically, most people do like a shiny webpage, and for me SC is as
quick as SS was.

-Settings: I was very happy to read that supposedly 7.X would keep my
previous settings. Wrong. I can't even get it to run without a complete

That's a very angry feature request you're writing.
I don't mind a reinstall myself as long as it's limited to major version
upgrades.

-Slim Network requirement: Give me a break. I'm sure many people find
the Slim Network a useful service, but there is no reason these devices
can't operate without any communication beyond their local network if
that's what the user wants. I don't want to give you an address, or

SC works fine without squeezenetwork.

nothing useful (unless you count starting... starting... starting
indefinately until I uninstall/reinstall as useful). What is the
fascination? Did the marketing department come up with it? Why does it

They don't seem to be sinking very hard, do they? AFAICT the duet is a
major success.

-Me: I'm dumb for wasting my time writing this. Won't change anything.
 Probably get sensored.

You probably mean 'censored', no, this kind of rants pop up occasionally
to bore us all, they're not censored. The threads are closed if they're
too inflammatory, that's not censorship. I don't think your's will be,
though.

-Me again: I'm also dumb for upgrading to 7. Let me know when it's
 7.5.x. I'll be back on 6.5ish.

Funny thing is, that this sort of rant probably shows how strongly
people feel about their squeezeboxes, which is a good thing in itself.
It's hard to please everyone, businesses go broke trying.

Peter
