OK, thanks to everyone who has replied. Pleased to hear about the mysb.com integration in SBS. I think I will try loading up a recent SBS/LMS on a spare machine and have a play. Note: As far as I recall, the settings in Windows Control Panel and in Windows Media Player (and even in Winows Firewall) are often inter related; i.e. you can turn media sharing functions on/off via either or both applications; and it is sometimes quite confusing to find out what is going on. Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released
Thanks for your advice! Unfortunately I am having no luck with this. I tried blocking just WMP. When that did not work, I tried to shut off media streaming in the control panel network settings and made sure that all WMP related functions were blocked in Windows Firewall advanced settings while all Media Center Extenders related functions, including UPnP, were allowed there for the local network. I waited at least half an hour between these steps, but no luck. I could not see in Windows Firewall advanced settings any other program except something called Network identification that mentioned UPnP. One thing I noticed in the media streaming section of the control panel was that the icon representing WMP hade a green play button on it while the corresponding icons for MC and Whitebear (which showed just on of my four SB players in that list) did not have such play buttons. And in that respect, I do think they are much smarter than geeks or nerds. I can deal with computers, I do develop softwares much more complicated than LMS. I am like the vast majority of Logitech target market (tech aware or not). I don't want to mess with geek behavior, because computers and softwares are not a hobby, there are tools. This market DEMAND stuff reliable and easy to install. SBS/LMS is not, a bunch of customers say so. One should not blame tags or artwork when LMS crashes (it almost never happened to me, but it does happen a lot for many customers), nor loosing time fixing tags if they don't care about them. Why ? Because this is not acceptable, and no other popular music software crash with bad or stupid artwork, leaving the customers with unusable library. Forcing people to fix their artwork IS stupid (except as a TEMPORARY workaround until the mandatory LMS fix is done). The only acceptable solution is 2 mandatory things : - Allow people to suppress ANY kind of scan if they want. - Make the scanner bad-artwork-and-bad-tagging-proof Check MediaMonkey if you don't understand what it means. It is not because a few dozens of geeks on a forum say those customers are wrong (or stupid), and that their one-armed blind 110 years old grandfather, or their six month baby little sister, installed LMS with their right foot, while developping a funny perl plugin with the left big toe, use it without trouble, are happy with it, and so that everybody should be happy, that those few dozens of geeks are right. Logitech target market, those who pay for the devices, hifi dealers choosing a product to sell it in order to make a living (not spending their time writing on a forum that customers are stupid because the product is so great), those people, some tech-aware, some others not, say that in its current state, those products are not reliable and easy to use for wide audience. Fortunately it seems that Logitech CEO has figured out that. With a little hope, this may be easily corrected. Aknowledge that a software like

Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released
You should easily be able to Browse the Content Directory Your Library (by Whitebear) and you should be able to Play To Your Player (by Whitebear). Hmm. Do you mean that I have to first load my SBS library (by Whitebear) in MC to be able to use the Send to command? What I want is to have the files on the MC PC sent for playback to my SBs in full quality and with the info displayed on my SBs that I am used to (as I said, I could point MC to the same files as SBS sees, if that would make things easier). I want to use MC, with all the info in the MC database and MC's powerful options for building playlists etc., as a front end for full quality playback on my SBs. Earlier this year you tried to help me to load my rather large SBS library into MC but it never succeeded (import stalled or was at least too slow to use), and the files I got imported into MC showed not even all the info available in SBS. I think I remember that the Send to command in MC worked earlier this year for files in the MC library but then my flac files got transcoded and the info on the SBs looked like an internet radio station was played. Now I was told in the MC forum that full quality playback with all info available to SBS was possibly when using the Send to command. That is why I wanted to try using Whitebear again. Again, thanks for your kind help! vagskal - don't give up. It does work fine, as we discussed over at Interact. I think you're just stumbling on something that will turn out to be pretty minor. I'm not sure where you are currently, or what your setup is, but I would do this: 1) shutdown MC and Whitebear 2) disable Windows firewall's on relevant systems 3) disable A/V software, ensuring that their network packet inspectors are out of the way 4) ensure WM* streaming is disabled 5) launch MC with DLNA enabled (just turn on Server/Renderer/Controller). Check the TCP port number. Restart MC if you've made changes - I don't know how quickly the server is updated - so be safe. 6) launch Whitebear, and check the Status page. A USB dac is connected to the computer and to my stereo system. The point is to see that it is not that difficult to have a software which can : - select some files wherever there are (internal HDD, external HDD, network location, usb stick) - add full directories to the library if you feel like it. - have an advanced library management with automatic rescan if you really want it - etc ... All that without any hassle for normal users, no mandatory scans, no unexpected rescans when you don't expect them, no scan or rescan crashes (at least nothing compared to SBS/LMS) I give MediaMonkey example because I use it, and think that file selection and library management are really great and reliable, but it is probably the same for Winamp, Foobar, etc ... -- nicolas75 nicolas75's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15823 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91532 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Which Burr-Brown DAC is better - PCM1748 (SB3) or PCM1690 (Onkyo 709)?
On thing I cant figure is if there is any real analog pass thru in that reciever I doubth it has it. It's pure audio mode turns of the video circiuts , that i figured. if you are going to use any processing including the subwofer output, digital conection is a given. Most modern av recievers digitise the analog inputs. This means that the Squeezebox analog ouput with ist DAC is going to an ADC ( analog to digital converter ) in the Onkyo and then to the Onkyo's DAC, you want to avoid this, by using a digital input. Given this recievers advanced eq posibilities I think you are meant to use digital inputs for any serius source, the analog inputs are there to support legacy sources that does not have digital outputs. The short answer : On most modern AV recievers you should use a digital input for your squeezebox. IMO I think most modern design have abandoned the concept of a pure analog path, the volume controll is probably digital too, so you also want to keep the Squeezebox at 100% volume for bit perfect transmission to the digil processor in the onkyo. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'
The main issue throughout this thread is one that has been discussed God knows how many times in these forums, mainly along the lines that if one is a geek, go for Squeezebox; if not try Sonos or others. Speaking purely for myself, I've long thought that view to be well off the mark. The average under 25 these days is extremely tech savvy, perfectly happy to download and use apps for their smartphones etc, so to suggest they can't cope with SBS/LMS software is ridiculous. Equally, for those who treat their music seriously, it is not a problem as they tend to know what they want, and do the research accordingly. So we are left with the large percentage of people who either can't be bothered, or are genuinely happy with inferior products. For that last group, why would they be interested in wifi players at all. If they're happy with an ithingy dock playing aac files, then who are we to criticise? So this brings us on to who Squeezeboxes should be aimed at, how to make them more user friendly, and how to market them. Personally, I've thought for a long time that Logitech have missed a trick by not having their own branded version of a vortebox. A box that can rip and tag accurately, with a stable linux version of SBS/LMS preinstalled, and perhaps a 250 GB HD could be pretty cheap if produced in bulk, and could be offered as a bundle with the Touch.I certainly wish I had heard of Vortebox BEFORE I ripped/tagged and added cover art to all my cds. I also think it's incorrect/unhelpful to state that mediamonkey ( for example) is years ahead of LMS/SBS. I used to use mediamonkey in my pre SBS days, and I certainly don't miss it. The name SBS kind of gives it away really. It's primarily a SERVER, and as far as I'm concerned it does that rather well. Having said that, things can always be improved, can they not? Re: [slim] Android Controller App
Just saw it hit the market today -- fixes the scroll issues for me, thanks! Great! One weird thing is that it seems to lock the screen to landscape orientation no matter how I hold it. Not sure if that's intentional or a bug, but either way, it's better than the scroll artifacting. Ugh... what device are you using? Can you give me the details from Settings/Advanced/About? I'm particularly interested in the screen resolution reported, the screensize and Android version. -- Michael ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

garym;670404 Wrote: yep, my pre-SB system was Foobar2000 on laptop w/USB HDD S/PDIF Benchmark DAC I stereo. I also looked at MediaMonkey for a bit (and it was quite good), but liked the infinite flexibility of Foobar2000 and its plugins. But it was the search to get my music storage and computer away from the stereo, as well as far removed from any internal soundcard issues (which are many!) that got me to SB products. Wasn't even thinking about Synching players at the time, but that has now become a critical factor as well. Very similar to what I had , but in my case it was an stationary computer a long catv coax to my DAC. i was alo using foobar 2000, which brings up the other problem with a computer centric solution. it's top down you sit at the computer and pushing out music to your system. And you mentioned the soudquality, fiddling with asio for all and/or kernel streaming to have good soundquality ( without the kmixer messing it up ) this alos removed system sound from the output. I got bored with that and basically only used while I was using my computer and for years I did not have any conection to my stereo untill I got my first squeezebox. It instanly gave me the two things I lacked in my competer centric setup. * computer independent soundquality. * a bottom up solution where I pull music from my collection via the player UI I don't have to be near the computer hosting the music I did not have mine in the listening room even when I used it for music ( I can not have a noisy pc in the listening room bizarre idea ) this also leads to an architechture where multiroom is an natural extension and these player started to multiply. this worked rigth out the box, no fiddling and nerd solutions yet that came later ;) A later added a small not so power consuming server to the party ( headless no monitor or keyboard ) it just sits in a corner in another room. My current favorite UI is iPeng it brings a very nice UI where i miss very little. I sometimes use desktop software to genrate a playlist for later use with the squeezebox system. the web-UI i dont regard it a player that would be unfair, but as an admin interface to the server with some player like cabalilities. No the squeezebox system is not near what it could do alot of unfullfilled posibilties. If ever wanted to go back to a topdown solution again it would be an laptop + usb dac, the squeezebox is not the tool for that. Another thing that is special with squeezeboxserver is that by design it is NOT a media manager you can be assured that it never writes to files or move them or do anything to them. It just scan them so that they can be served to the players ( the whole collection can be read only ). The idea is that there is plenty of software out ther that does this much better, this probably includes Media Monkey :) and ripping CD or bying music has other solutions that logitech never could compete with -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub. Just got my Kindle Fire today. Tried to install Logitech Controller App from GetJar but no joy. Any chance Logitech could publish this app officially in the Amazon App store? Re: [slim] Announce: Whitebear Media Server v2.2 Released
vagskal;670325 Wrote: Hmm. Do you mean that I have to first load my SBS library (by Whitebear) in MC to be able to use the Send to command? Not particularly... The world of UPnP Media (also called DLNA) comprises three elements: i) DMS Digital Media Servers (libraries), ii) DMR Digital Media Renderers (players), and iii) CP Control Points -- which do two things a) Browse the DMS Content Directory, and b) play music to and otherwise control DMRs. Whitebear represents your SBS library as a DMS, and it also represents each Squeeze player as a DMR. JRMC is has its own library (which it also represents as a DMS), it is a player via your PC's audio system (which it also represents as a DMR), and finally it is a CP too. Basically (at least in theory) any CP can browse any DMS and play to any DMR interchangeably as follows: A) JRMC can browse its own library and play to a Squeeze player DMR hosted by Whitebear. B) JRMC can browse an SBS DMS library served by Whitebear and play to itself. C) JRMC can browse an SBS DMS library served by Whitebear and play to a Squeeze player DMR served by Whitebear. vagskal;670325 Wrote: What I want is to have the files on the MC PC sent for playback to my SBs in full quality and with the info displayed on my SBs that I am used to Yes that is possible. There are some benefits in using C) because it allows tighter integration of tag meta data between the library and the players, but A) also works if that is what you prefer. vagskal;670325 Wrote: Earlier this year you tried to help me to load my rather large SBS library into MC but it never succeeded (import stalled or was at least too slow to use), and the files I got imported into MC showed not even all the info available in SBS.How large is your library? Mine has 10k tracks and it takes about 30 minutes to load. However once JRMC has loaded it, it keeps a local database in cache so reloading is not needed. You only need to reload into JRMC when you have changed your SBS library, and most times this occurs automatically in the background anyway. vagskal;670325 Wrote: I think I remember that the Send to command in MC worked earlier this year for files in the MC library Ok, so we just need to work out what changed since then. vagskal;670325 Wrote: but then my flac files got transcoded and the info on the SBs looked like an internet radio station was played. Now I was told in the MC forum that full quality playback with all info available to SBS was possible when using the Send to command. In option A) above, Whitebear causes the playing track to show TrackNr - Title - Album - Artist (fixed format) and no AlbumArt. Whereas option C) provides tighter integration, so the player will show the meta data in whatever format you have selected in the Squeeze player settings, and it will also show the album art. This is why I recommend C) rather than A). -- AndrewFG Regards, AndrewFG Try out Whitebear. The middleware that joins the two worlds of: 1. UPnP/DLNA media clients and media players, and, 2. Re: [slim] Logitech drops Revue, says early Google TV intro a 'mistake'
Mediamonkey and the Squeeze-ecosystem obviously fill two different needs. The one thing were they can easily be compared is the scanning. And MM is far ahead. Both in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and fault tolerance. Logitech could learn from that. Btw I'm very pleased to here that Logitech is devoted to Squeezebox. Lets just hope it is not too late and they have a (couple of) new model(s) up their sleeve, so they have something new and shiny to focus their (renewed?)marketing around. Btw, what's up with the Touch/Radio placement in all their powerpoints and marketing? Radio everywhere, Touch nowhere. I do realize the Radio is very important and sells well, but it seems they are trying to hide the touch away. -- Muele BR Mogens 2 Radios (1 battery), 2 Controllers, 2 Receivers, 1 Softsqueeze (at work), SqueezeCommander and SqueezePlayer on Se X10 mini and HTC Desire. Mnyb;670441 Wrote: That is a design choice and a holy cow here ? Should the software have more media manager like capacity ? Some thinks it an extremly bad idea . I'm a bit ambivalent, but sometimes when I look at a track I'm playing and thinking why did I put it that genre ? I wish I could simply change it from the UI . Honestly the worst case scenario if a media software botches the files is that you have to dig out your backup ? Good questions Mnyb. For me that is the most frustrating part about using LMS. It's not the plugins but the interface with your music collection. You cannot edit the files, creating playlists is a trial and it's slowww accessing music, and to top it off, there is the slow scanning. It does depend entirely on what you want from it. I suppose if you play an album from beginning to end then it possibly does that ok. But it does really struggle outside of that area. I remember reading somewhere someone made a comment that LMS appeared to be created to manage a playlist of 100 albums without any thought of expansion. It really struggles with a large private music collection. I'm not saying LMS is a waste of time, it does have it's uses but it does need an improvement in the management of the database. It maybe a holy cow to some, leave it as it is they say, but it's certainly not a religious experience for others. -- Gingernut63 Gingernut63 MonkeySqueeze - Squeezing music into your life! http://twitter.com/#!/MonkeySqueeze1 MonkeySqueeze Support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2t=59515 MonkeySqueeze Development: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=19t=59907 Squeezebox Boom - SqueezePlay - Squeeze Player - MediaMonkey - MonkeyTunes Gingernut63's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=48490 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=91532 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
