Hi Again All,

Well, to-day I could have SWORN that some demon had taken possession of
the PTO in my T-4X transmitter, that it was sent to this earth with the
express purpose of taunting me...!

I mentioned before that last week I re-soldered a visibly bad connection
of the 33-pfd. temperature compensating capacitor to the board of my PTO,
and that---so far!---it appeared to be the proverbial silver bullet in
fixing the warbling. Well, this morning---at the very moment that I was
seriously considering taking the 4-Line on a road trip to the cottage to
test
the PTO in the field---the frequency suddenly jumped a coupla KHz, and
was raspy-sounding...!

Oh no, here we go again! (Why do the gods taunt me so...?!).

Turns out---I think!---that I was monitoring the T-4X with the function
switch in the Tune position. By wiggling that switch ever-so-slightly, I
could make the frequency jump a prescribed amount of KHzexactly the
amount that I get when switching the mode switch to Phone.

I wonder if a dirty mode switch may have contributed to my initial
confusion in this whole matter...?

The testing continues...

Hi Gang,

Early this morning I removed the shield cover from the PTO of my Drake

I then pulled the power plug of the thing, looked at the solder
connections of the small white tubular temperature compensating capacitor with
a
magnifying glass. I'd swear that the one lead as it contacted the pc board
appeared crystallized...and so I heated that joint momentarily, allowing
the solder to flow. And I re-heated as many of the other spots that I could
get at where I knew there were discreet components below.

I've had the rig on several times since then atop the bench---and the
signal from the PTO seems to be remarkably clean decidedly UN-wobbly...!

I'm going to retest the thing several more times before I re-can the
PTO---I might even extricate the whole board itself do a THOROUGH
re-soldering of EVERYTHING in sight...

...But I there's a nagging little voice deep inside my head that keeps on
repeating, Fool! This is FAR TOO EASY to be any sort of a PERMANENT fix!
We'll see. Sometimes the most vexing of problems have with them the most

I have a TR-4, 1968 manufacture date, serial number 28124. It has worked
well for years, with the last few being dormant as my vertical took a
hit a few winters ago with icing. I've replaced the vertical, and I'm
trying to re-tube the unit. Here is where the confusion arises:

The chassis lettering and schematic for tubes V4, V5, V11 and both agree
 and are respectively: 6EJ7, 6BA6, 6BZ6.

Note: the schematic has V5 and V11 with a hand lettered 6 in front of
6BA6 and 6BZ6 versus all other tubes which have stencil guided lettering.

The Manual's Voltage Reference chart and Tube List for V4, V5 and V11
 are: 6EJ7, 12BA6, 12BZ6

The Manual's Block Diagram shows V4 as 6HS6

I'm not sure what's supposed to be right, though I have a tendency to
believe the chassis lettering and schematic. The manual is internally
inconsistent, and doesn't agree with the physical hardware or schematic.

I probably can take out V5 and V11 and measure the filament voltage
present to see if it really is set up for a 6 or 12 volt tube in those
 sockets.

I found some correspondence between the original owner, whom I purchased
the unit from, and the factory regarding a technical problem. The
factory rep wasn't sure in solving a problem whether the former owner
needed a 6BZ6 or a 12BZ6 so he sent him one of each. Apparently the
 factory didn't know either!

Was there some changeover for different serial number ranges, between
various tube types or what, and what is the best way to tell which tubes
 really belong in the circuits?

Thanks for pointing me toward a resource, if you know one, to help get
 some answers.

[Drakelist] TR-7 Freq Problem

2009-01-10 Thread W8NJR
My TR-7 won't lock onto frequency with the internal VFO selected. The only
way it will work is off the R-7 VFO. The frequency readout shows about 17900
Khz until you go to the R-7 VFO, then it locks on OK. At first I could correct
this problem by reseating boards but now that has no effect. Reseating the
boards only corrected the problem for a little while then it would go out
again. Can anyone offer any suggestions about where to look for this problem.
The
only way it will work now is off the R-7 VFO. I would appreciate any help
you can offer.

Yep, I've had the exact same problem and Garey is right on the money
with a cure. In fact after about 2 years my rig has developed the same
problem and I have to do this again.
I stumbled on the fix myself the first time when recalling my radio
tech friend's cure for many Yaesu FT-101 problems was pulling the boards
and cleaning the contacts with a common eraser.

I've had this problem as well, mostly manifested as an annoying
intermittent with one of the DR7 connections. I think I have finally
resolved it with sparing application of DeOxit to the contacts. Don't
use the spray, I got the applicator bottle with the needle tip.

My new R7A had a problem of a little different sort - one of the pins
on the parent board had a small blob of solder right at the very end,
which had slightly deformed the socket contact when the board was
inserted. I suspect this was a very rare occurence, but may be
something to watch for. After I removed the solder from the end of the
pin, I unsoldered the receptacle from the circuit board and was able to
remove the contact from the connector shell and re-form it into shape.
 It's working fine now.

One other problem of this nature is the solder on the long pins of the
DR-7. There is quite a bit of stress on these soft-soldered
connections, and they are subject to the solder cracking. This is not
always visible so reflowing these connections is a good preventative
and/or possible repair if temperature or mechanical pressure causes DR-7
misbehavior.

OK Garey the ground is there. The pots both check about 520K ohms across the

[drakelist] TR-4C working again!

2008-04-01 Thread W8NJR
To all, thanks for the help given me on the drakelist here. Garey's
suggestion to short the filters and listen to the calibrate signal on both
sidebands
did the trick. Shorting the filter got the rf flowing and listening to the
calibrate signal on both sidebands told me the 9 mhz signal was off frequency
a little.

So I aligned the 9 mhz signal so the calibrate signal sounded the same in
both sidebands and after that I could take the shorting lead off the filters
and
the signal passed thru OK. After that came a complete alignment job. The
radio now has 150+ watts output on 80, 40, and 20 meters and reduced output on
15 meters. The receiver sounds great! I still don't have anything out on ten
meters but I will get to that soon.

I just finished a QSO on 20m with it and the report was good. So thanks to
all who helped and to those who let me monopolize the list a bit yesterday
while searching for answers. I would still be looking without the help I
received.

OK Garey, I must have been on the wrong pin before. The voltages on V7 are
all ok and close to where they should be in R T. I have a scope (Tetronix)
and a Freq. counter. I am testing with the bandswitch in the 20m position. On
pin 2 of V6 I show a freq of 10.400 mhz when I go to T and when I talk in the
mike I can see the SSB signal there. Still, nothing on the other side of V6
tho. No RF there.

on Pin 6, screen of V7, voltage should be ~100V R or T. Likely not the

You say you have signal to the grid of V6. Is that ON Pin 2 or ?? Are

Well, that's a problem!

First thing comes to mind is that the Carrier oscillator isn't running,
and you are tuning to the second harmonic of the PTO.

On 20M you should have 9.000 MHz from the Car Osc. mixed with the PTO at
say 5.200 MHz to produce a signal at 14.200 MHz.

You need to see if the 9.000 MHz oscillator is running, on frequency and
I would expect about 2V p-p across R77 at T13.

Are you sure your Carrier Oscillator is on frequency? 9.0 MHz. The
filters are positioned on either side of that frequency and if it's NOT
in the middle Also check the switching. You can clip a lead
across each filter and then do an ohmmeter check through the switches.
I just don't see that many open filters. Shape changes, increased
attenuation, etc., but not that many that go completely open.

Looking at the bottom of the transceiver, the X filter is the one to
the right of the pair.

Also, keep in mind that the filters are in effect in receive as well.
Can you hear the calibrator in either sideband position?

You should have the 9.000 MHz signal from the filter(s) and the
  5.2 MHz
signal from V3A to mix and produce 14.200 at the plate of V4.

If you do this in CW, the Carrier Oscillator is shifted into the

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

When I switch to other side band filter the signal goes thru the other
filter. I must have a bad filter. I think it is the upper one that is
used in the transmit (X) position.

Where did you get the 5W rating? The Bias supply only supplies 3-4 mA,
and the resistors on either side of the divider are 1/2W.

The original is a standard carbon pot, probably rated at a watt or two
