Re: [Elecraft] 43' Vertical - mine is 31ft
Nice location - handy for Elecraft too. there is a tree in the background that looks tempting as an antenna support. At the moment it looks like you have one of those QTHs with almost no man-made noise which coupled with an inefficient 80m antenna is frustrating when people you can hear perfectly well can't hear you. The remote auto-tuner at the base is in exactly the right place, but you will need to give it some help. Adding an extra coil at the base which you can bypass with relays will probably allow you to tune the vertical on 80m. Not ideal but it will be better than an 80m mobile whip and they work to some extent. The KPA500 will then help overcome the poor radiation efficiency. With 600W, you need to ensure the coil will handle the power, but that's not so hard to achieve. It does not need to be a coil, you could use a phasing line along the fence instead. Even if the K3 will tune it, there might be significant feeder losses and you are down on power without the linear. [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
Dear OMs and Yls, I just took delivery of a KX1 purchased used. I am most impressed with the small radio and have now made four QSOs with fellow EUs running 4 Watts to a 4 el SteppIR at 24M. Well the test will come when I change over to a hank of wire operated against a counterpoise. The receiver is amazing to me and the transmitter pretty good.So much is in such a small package. My main gripe just now is the lousy paddle which comes with the KX1 as a option.I also have a KX3 also purchased used and waiting for me in Connecticut. It has a paddle which I have tried on my friends KX3 - this paddle is much better than the one on the KX1.Can I swap the KX3 paddle onto the KX1?I know Bengali has an elegant wee paddle which mounts on the KX1 or KX3 depending on the attachment purchased. This may be my ultimate solution but the KX3 paddle if it mounts would be a big help. I do not want to carry around an external paddle weighing more than the KX1. The extremely small size and weight have a great attraction to me. Having a big bag of accessories is not to my liking. A simple radio and some wire seems to be ideal for me.The KX3 is for different applications. The receiver is great fun on both CW and SSB and the stability of it impresses me. Today was discussing the old Hallicrafters SX28 and you know the KX1 seems to have a better receiver. I think this small wonder is great fun and can see why Elecraft has kept it in the product line. 73 Doug EI2CN K3, KX3, KX1 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
Good morning, Doug. You can not use the KX3PD paddle directly with the KX1 because the KX3PD is a two point mount and uses a very different plug and jack arrangement, whereas, the KX1PD is a single point mount and the plug is an integral 1/8 inch stereo. If you wanted to use the KX3PD with the KX1 you would have to fabricate your own transition mount. The Begali Adventure that you refer to will work on both radios because you would purchase individual mounts for each of the radios. Yes, the KX1 is a *still* a neat little rig and I frequently take it out, instead of my KX3, just because the QSOs earned on 900 milliwatts with a 26 foot piece of wire and a 16' counterpoise are very rewarding. 73, Stan WB2LQF On Sat, Sep 07, 2013 at 07:09 AM, Doug Turnbull wrote: Dear OMs and Yls, I just took delivery of a KX1 purchased used. Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR needs improvement - audio artifact
Hi, I also use NR on CW and agree it gives a nice reduction of background noise, but also notice a very annoying issue: Intermittently, there is a click in the headphones output signal. It happens whenever I have NR switched on (even on a mild setting, like F1-2). It most often occurs just after I've finished sending. Then, the receive audio is diminished for a fraction of a second, followed by a quite loud click. This issue does not happen all the time, although I can fairly well reproduce it within one minute of trying. The issue is independent of my AGC settings (fast, slow or off). I can also reproduce it when I use TX test mode. And also with sidetone volume set to 0. It's not related to the QSK settings, as I can also reproduce the issue with the K3 set to semi-QSK with the delay set to .35 seconds. With the K3 on speaker, I can hear the diminishing of the receive audio, but not the click. I've made a recording of it via the K3 Line Out with Audacity. On the recording you can see and hear the diminishing audio, but not the click. Anyone else notice this? [Elecraft] K3 RX Audio Roll-off below 400 Hz
My K3 is in the 61XX serial number range (almost 2 years old), and I'm running FW 4.67/2.81. While setting up WSJT-X, I've noticed a rather pronounced audio roll-off on the waterfall display. By other means I've verified that the sound card being used is flat down to below 20 Hz, so it isn't that. Assuming that it is an attribute of the K3 itself, things are flat down to 400 Hz. Then there is a -3 dB roll-off at 300 Hz, -10 dB at 200 Hz, and -20 dB at 100 Hz. At the moment, my widest filter is an 8-pole 2.8 KHz (A 6 KHz AM filter is on order), and it properly centered and wide open. [Elecraft] KX3 SWR meter (RF feedback?)
Hi all, I'm currently on a trip and brought my KX3 and Buddistick with me. I also brought along my antenna analyzer. As one does when relaxing. The analyzer shows that the Buddistick is giving me = 1.5:1 SWR across the 20m band, and I did a tuner memory clear (I'm using the beta firmware) and fresh tune for 20m on the KX3. It reports 1:1 after doing just a little tuning up. Receive sounds fantastic here in the middle of nowhere. On transmit, however, the SWR meter on the KX3 is showing =3:1. The signal seems to be getting out admirably; pskreporter.info shows I've been picked up in Japan, Alaska and all the way to the east coast of the US. If I physically grab the shield of the antenna connector, the SWR meter drops a little bit. I wish I had brought my external SWR meter along with me for comparison. If I lower the power output to 0.3W, the SWR meter drops all its bars, but when I increase it to 0.4W, it flickers a bit but goes up to =3:1. My question is this: could this be just an RF feedback issue due to the relatively close proximity of the KX3 with the Buddistick? The way the coax routing worked out, I'm sitting only about 10-12 feet from the antenna. If so, aside from getting further away from the antenna somehow, are there other suggestions of things that can be done in the field to work around or mitigate the problem? Thanks for any advice, Nick / N6OL -- *N6OL* Saying something doesn't make it true. Belief in something doesn't make it real. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX Audio Roll-off below 400 Hz
Is this roll-off similar to what other folks are seeing? That is slightly less roll off than I see with either the FM (13 KHz) or 2.8 KHz filters in the data modes. It is in line with the 200 Hz cut off for data modes. In LSB/USB the low cut is less steep. In SSB it looks to be about 10 dB per octave below 300 Hz (-10 dB at 150 Hz, -20 dB at 75 Hz, -30 dB at 40 Hz) vs. 0.2 dB/Hz below 250 Hz in DATA modes. 73, ... [Elecraft] [K144XV] SWR indication
Folks, Can't seem to find this in the user's manuals. The K144XV internal 2 meter transverter for the K3 presumably has a 50 ohm output, but no antenna tuner. I'd like to use one with a commercial antenna that has a nominal impedance of 50 ohms, fed by a 30 foot run of LMR400 coax. I wonder if there is any indication from the K144XV if the SWR is out of line. What would it do? Unfortunately, my VNA doesn't reach 2 meters, so I'd be guessing all the way. I'm face-palming. I should have thought of that. Fortunately I did bring an extra length of coax and a barrel connector. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
Proof again that one cannot make a standardize something as personal as a key and please everyone. I like the KXPD1 paddle. It's not my first choice for paddles (At home I use Scotia paddles when not on my Speed-X Bug) but I would not care to take either the Scotia or Speed-X into the field with me. I almost never exceed 30 wpm because virtually none of the stations I work exceeds that speed. My requirement for a key is something that I can comfortably use to chew the rag at 20 WPM or so for an hour or so and which will fit in the tiny bag my KX1 travels in along with an antenna and earbuds without danger of damaging it. With that criteria, the little KXPD1 is a perfect choice for me. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Doug Turnbull Sent: Saturday, September 07, 2013 12:10 PM To: 'EricJ'; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question Hi Eric, I thought of the palm mini but like the idea of a paddle attached to the KX1/KX3. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
I think we often become much too critical and forget that the KX1 and KXPD1 are designed for portable use, particularly light backpacking and portable operation. I therefore believe it is unfair to compare them with other paddles and transceivers. I own a KX1/KDPD1 and a KX3/KXPD3, and also have two K3s (with which I use a Begali Magnetic Signature paddle). The Begali is far, far superior to these small portable paddles of course ... As it should be the KXPD3 is better than the KXPD1 . but as far as I'm concerned the KXPD1 is also perfectly satisfactory for the type of operation for which it is primarily intended. I did have difficulty when I first got it, but quickly learned that it works almost perfectly if I squeeze the paddles at the very tips rather than the mid-paddle area..in my hands it was that simple to solve the problem. I think the KX1 and KX3 are both engineering marvels and I love them both. When I'm operating portable, I think an occasional dropped dit or dah is a very small price to pay for the convenience of having light, easy to carry paddles securely mounted to a totally self-contained portable transceiver. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Extention speaker
I use a pair of Behringer MS40 amplified speakers. They have a small equalizer on board - 2 inputs (K3 and computer) and are not bothered by RF. Offer really fine arm chair copy for my use on 160/75/40 meters. I rarely use cans - not even for CW. It is quite here in the house. Really makes AFX shine. Matching speaker(s) would be nice - could be in a cabinet of the P3 size. Not sure if there is a need of any additional circuitry - I am pretty happy with what the K3 does now. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question
Don, Your points are taken. The KXPD3 is by far a better paddle than the KXPD1 from this operator's point of view. I can struggle with the KXPD1 but hate it so the very dear Bengali will probably be my solution. We are all different but for me the KXPD1 does not meet Elecraft standards. The KX1 on the other hand is a marvel for such a small box. Thank you for your tips! I will keep them in mind and soldier on with the KXPD1 until a Bengali is in my hands. It is too bad the KXPD3 can not be used with the KX1. We are all entitled and perhaps I am just not good enough to use the KXPD1. 73 Doug EI2CN and thank you again. -Original Message- From: Donald Butler [mailto:n...@comcast.net] Sent: 07 September 2013 20:01 To: 'Doug Turnbull'; 'EricJ'; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] [KX1] paddle question I think we often become much too critical and forget that the KX1 and KXPD1 are designed for portable use, particularly light backpacking and portable operation. One that I chose not to acquire. I used the frame to homebrew a tiny touch paddle, but that was just for fun. It worked very nicely, but required a button battery that I didn't want to have to depend on when camping. I settled on the Palm Mini Paddle. It's a lot cheaper than the Bengali Adventure (which wasn't available then), and is an excellent performer, nearly indestructible and packs very small. [Elecraft] Paranoia - Harrison Ford movie
K8DSS and I went and saw the movie, Paranoia. Harrison Ford played the part of a wealthy business man running a high tech company. In his office were a number of Hallicrafters boat anchors. Someone asked him about them, and he said that they were from his earlier years as a ham radio operator, and that he had built the radios. Unless I fell asleep, I think this was the only mention of ham radio in the movie. I don't think that even an Elecraft rig could have enhanced the portrayal of ham radio in the movie. I gave it a 4 out of 10. 73, George George Wagner, K5KG Sarasota, FL 941-400-1960 cell __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 waterfall width control
Julie, I just checked my KX3 using a broadband noise generator and Spectrogram to view the passband width. With the WIDTH set to maximum, the passband extends from 250 Hz to above 3000 Hz (which should fill the waterfall on Fldigi). I do not have Fldigi installed on my workbench computer, but that should not make any difference. Use the numbers in the KX3 WIDTH display to judge the actual width - if you look only at the graphic on the display, it goes to its maximum width when the actual width is greater than 1.2 kHz. The PBT knob normally alters the center frequency (FC). Tap it to change the knob function to WIDTH. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/7/2013 5:37 PM, Julie Royster wrote: Earlier I thought I understood that setting the filter width on the KX3 to maximum would yield a wide waterfall on PSK31, but there must be something else too because now I have narrow waterfalls while the KX3 filter width is still set wide. [Elecraft] Anyone else using a K3 with WSJT-X
Hey, I have recently changed from JT65-HF to WSJT-X software. I've had great success with the software and its working well with one exception. If I enable bidirectional rig control (by setting a non-zero polling interval), it works for a period of time -- however at some point, maybe 30 min, it simply stops listening to the K3 anymore (commands sent TO the K3 work just fine, but the VFO frequency is no longer shown). This is most apparent when I use the WSJT-X pull-down menu to change band. The K3 changes band as you would expect, but WSJT-X will continue to show the frequency from the last band and it won't update, no matter how long you wait. Its easy to restore operation by setting the polling value to zero (which puts the WSJT-X software into a unidirectional mode -- control out, no feedback in). After setting it to zero, then putting it back to 2 seconds, the ORG display will immediately update. It will continue working properly for a period of time, then fail in a similar fashion. I don't suspect this is an issue with the K3 or cable, as changing the WSJT-X setting seems to resolve things, so I suspect this is a issue with the WSJT-X program itself. Just wondering if anyone else is having a similar issue? PS Computer is running 64-bit Win7. Latest FTDI USB drivers are installed. 73, Bob, WB4SON __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The sun is setting much earlier now. All those extra hours of light during the summer let me get outside after dinner. That is no longer true. I did step out onto the deck during dusk and had a doe watch me. The red of the setting sun and her coat had much the same hue; it was only her shape which made her show up. Once her shape resolved I said hello and she wandered off. Propagation has been decent to good this week. There was some fading but the signals were so loud they were easy to copy through the dips. Thunderstorms were present too; with an unusual one passing over my house. I heard the rumbles and unhooked antennas. But as usual the cloud to ground lightning was limited to the Columbia River valley north of me though there was cloud to cloud activity near me.
