[Elecraft] K3: Loud audio POPS
G'morning all: I know that this loud audio pop issue was fixed with a firmware release (maybe 3.5x) in the past. However, during the ARRL DX CW contest while using a borrowed K3 (s/n 6425) while mine was on the west coast for repair, 3 or 4 times during the contest I experienced a loud, very short, audio pop in the earphones. I had updated the firmware on 6425 from 4.67 to 4.83 prior to the contest so it would play nicely with the KAT500 and KPA500, so I am pretty sure firmware was not the issue. I do not specifically recall any particular thing that I was doing that might make the pops happen, other than I think they happened when I was QSYing or changing freq by clicking on a spot on the logger band map. So far as I know all the AGC CONFIG settings in this K3 were defaults. The narrow crystal filter was 500 Hz. I do not recall these pops ever occurring in my K3 (s/n 202). In all other respects, the 6425 performed just as I had expected it would with no other issues. Just wondering if anyone else has recently experienced this audio pop and if so what did you do about it??? Thanks... 73, Ken K3IU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KAT500 autotune
KAT 01.58 is working nicely. But still, if Your antennas are changing impedance as the WX changes (which I can confirm is the case when antennas are mounted in or very close to trees :-) You are going to hear these sometimes lengthy clickety-clack. Even when making two configurations (one for dry and one for wet WX) You have all shades in between, so once in a while You are going to have the relays going crazy again. At least it happens to me. This made me think if it might be avoided keeping in mind that the K3 ATU does the tuning a lot less noisy. I think others have suggested a firmware change making autotune of KAT500 initiate from the K3. This may be an interesting way to get rid of the clickety-clack of the KAT500 if done as follows when selecting TUNE on the K3 (new mode: KAT500): - KAT500 enter bypass (KPA enters STBY) and K3 performs the autotune - K3 ATU config transfers to KAT500 - K3 ATU changes to BYPASS - KAT500 changes to MANUAL if the cables from K3 to KPA are not so good it may be that the KAT needs to fine tune. So a fine tune of the KAT might be a good idea. 73/OZ4UN Poul-Erik Sendt fra min iPad __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 and CAT software
Dear all, I am using K3 with HamRadio de Luxe. Mostly I am quite satisfied. But I have a few issues which I would like to hear if anybody should have any solutions to. I miss a slider for high cut and one for low cut. Can I add this myself (and if so how?). Any other CAT software that will do the job? Using HRD to shift from eg. 20 meter data-R to 40 meter (and selecting data-R) AND once again selecting 20 meter I am returned to 20 meter LSB (not data-R). Any solutions? I am also using DXLab. Clicking on a spot with split on SpotCollector my K3 goes to the split frequency not to the DX's frequency. Any solutions? InDXLab the Commander seems very rudimentary and I have not figured out any way to add controls that will get it to any degree near the facilities of HRD. Have I missed something obvious? Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 autotune
An ingenious idea but I think there is a flaw in the argument, in that at the position of the K3's ATU there will be a different impedance to match than is the case at the KAT500's position further along the line. Not only will the impedance move around the Smith Chart a bit but there is also the input impedance of the KPA500 to consider. Maybe in practice all of the above may have a negligible effect, but I somehow doubt it. 73 Stephen G4SJP On 23 February 2014 12:58, Poul Erik Karlshøj (PKA) p...@telepost.gl wrote: KAT 01.58 is working nicely. [Elecraft] K3-KAT-KPA Firmware Updates: Two Questions
Just updated the K3 and KAT500. So far all works as advertised, with one odd phenomenon. The SWR LEDs on the KAT don't match the KPA SWR meter and LEDs when the KPA is in Operate mode. (They match reasonably well when the KPA is in Standby.) In fact, on most trained frequencies the KAT LEDs don't light at all, even when the KPA is indicating an SWR of 1.3 or more at full power. Prior to the firmware update this was not the case - the LEDs on both units synced pretty well. Anyone know why this should have changed? I have not updated the KPA500 yet, for lack of the proper cable. Could that be causing this effect? Which brings up question 2 - anyone know a good source for that cable? It's RS232 on one end and USB on the other, for a Mac running OS X. Tnx for any clues . . . Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 autotune
Yes Stephen thats true. The cable length is the cable from K3 to KPA plus KPA input to output (50 ohm straight through if in STBY) plus the cable KPA to KAT plus the KAT input to output in BYPASS (50 ohm straight through?). In my case it might be a total of 1.5 meter which is much on 6m but not very much on 160m. Still it might be a lot less relay chattering in the KAT500 even if it needs to include a fine tuning. I had another idea, which unfortunately requires a big hardware change: install smaller and quieter relays, one in parallel with each of the bigger relays. Do the (low power) tuning using the small relays and then copy the relay config to the bigger relays and open the smaller ones. Maybe for the next generation KAT. Re: [Elecraft] K3-KAT-KPA Firmware Updates: Two Questions
Ted, The instructions I am aware of say that all should be updated. You should be able to use the cable that you have plugged into the K3 temporarily on the KPA500. You can order a KUSB cable from Elecraft. If you obtain a similar USB to serial adapter locally, be certain it uses the FTDI chipset. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2014 10:17 AM, Dauer, Edward wrote: Just updated the K3 and KAT500. Re: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 revs 4.83/1.38/1.58
I think I found a little thing to improve. the KAT500 can miss a frequency update from the K3 in a certain situation To replicate: - Switch everything on and operate the KAT/KPA/K3 combo as usual with KAT500 in manual mode - Activate the KAT500 utility for monitoring the KAT500 and select the Operate tab, here you can see the last observed frequency. See that KAT500 follows theK3 freq and switches accordingly. Now - set the KAT to BYPass - Change K3 freq, note that the KAT500 freq info does not follow this. - Switch KAT to MANual, note that the freq info is still not there - now transmit with the K3, note that the KAT detects the frequency now and switches to the appropriate setting (the old way). Improvement = KAT500 follows K3 freq in all KAT modes. so also in BYPass, and switches to the right setting as soon as you switch to MANual or AUTO. 73 Arie PA3A __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 mini ?
I'm pretty late to the K3 game due to a decade or so focusing on other things than ham radio. I thought I knew that the K3/0 had to do with remote control and took the first message with subject K3/0 Mini to refer to a mini K3/0. The earlier ones on the K3 Mini were a bit confusing. [Elecraft] Reverting from FW 4.83 to the Previous Release Version
My K3/P3 arrived Friday. I listened a bit, mostly on SSB but some on CW. I don't recall any issues with how it sounded to me. Yesterday afternoon I finally got around to installing the K3 Utility and P3 Utility on my shack Win 8.1 PC. I discovered that MCU 4.83 had been released and upgraded from the version my K3 #8004 was delivered with. All that went well -- and I noticed that the DSP firmware was updated, too, from msgs on the LCD. Last night I again listened to more CW and with some settings the audio seemed different, for lack of a better term. Most likely this is due to my newness to the K3 and some significant hearing impairments (stone deaf in one ear and the good one isn't so great), but I'd like to wring it out and see if there is/was a difference. So I'd like to try installing the previous release version (4.67 or 4.76) on my K3 and do some A-B testing. The problem is that since my K3 came with the earlier version installed, I likely do not have the needed firmware files in my computer to be loaded -- though reading at the Elecraft website it looks possible to do such a reversion if you do have them in your computer My questions: Are the needed earlier files available for download, and if they are, which files are they and how do I go about telling the K3 utility to load them (I assume it's akin to installing a beta version but as a K3 owner of 48 hours I've not had the opportunity to load beta firmware). 73, Phil w7ox __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes?
Glenn, My guess is most figured you were referring to the KXPA100, but your question even has more general reach. Since full output for the KXPA-100 is cited with 10w drive, it is a good guess that 3w = 30w, 4w= 40w, etc. In reality the gain curve for amplifiers is not that flat and often you get a little more gain at lower inputs. One advantage is that linearity is usually much better when an amp is driven below its max specs, so that is good for running psk-31 and other digital modes. The K3 and KX3 are much better transmitters than most so maybe that is not as much of a concern. Just a general comment about digital modes: psk-31 was something I tried when it was fairly new and I generally ran at 15-25w with my FT-847. I did well with a 20m dipole running at that level. There were no locals to cause me grief so power level was not an issue. I recall most contacts as nice chats and not certificate chasing. I am looking forward to returning to psk-31 or its variants with 10w from my K3 or 3-5w from my KX3. On 20-10m bands I use a three element yagi at 50-feet so that gives gain advantage of more ERP and selective reception if a neighbor is operating (I now have a multi-multi class station located about 12mi north of me). But then I am not on for the contests so we have no issues (not even heard him). He is big on RTTY and CW. WSJT suite of digital modes was primarily developed for super weak-signal operation such as meteor scatter or eme. They have evolved to weak-signal proponents on HF and LF, and up to mw, so I agree that a plain-text version is needed for chat style operating. There are so many different digital modes these days so one has more to chose (eg: FLdigi). 73, Ed - KL7UW 17 bands: 600m - 3cm -- From: WA7SPY wa7...@comcast.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 recommended max power for digital modes? Message-ID: 4144055f-7458-437a-a581-459369add...@comcast.net Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Thank you for all the replies they were very informative. In my original post I stated KPA100. It should have been KXPA100 my bad on my part. Most of you figured out what I meant. I agree about the hi and bye PSK31 QSO's these days. That being said I will say I have had some really nice rag chew QSO's lately on PSK31. I typically start turning my power down during a QSO to see how low I can go and still have a good copy. I do have my KX3 connected to a Hard Rock 50, 50 watt amplifier. I run the Hard Rock at 20 watts or less on PSK31. In regard to the KXPA100 my original question was to find out what the max output power would be safe to go to without causing damage to the amp. If I am correct the answer is the amp will protect itself and automatically throttle itself back if the temp to the finals gets too hot. Now in regard to the KX3 without the amp 2-3 watts is recommended for PSK31. What does 2 -3 watts driving the KXPA100 equate to for output power from the amp. I will be using the Elecraft cable set to integrate the amp. So from what I have read that means the PA menu is selected to on on the KX3. That means the power control on the KX3 is re-indexed. So does that mean it is safe to run in the 20-30 watt range with the amp without over driving the KX3 for PSK31? Re: [Elecraft] K3 FP getting warm.
Bill, I would not think that 34 degC should be any cause for concern. In fact, I would not be concerned unless it got over 40 degC. Most devices are rated for an operating free-air temperature up to at least 70 degC, and that is quite hot (158 degF). In general, if you can hold your hand on a device for 5 minutes or more, the temperature is OK. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2014 2:26 PM, NZ0T wrote: I noticed today that the front panel of my K3/100 SN 1502 with the newer DSP board seems much warmer to the touch than before. [Elecraft] BL2 enclosure
Hello, Finished the first try at making a light weight weather proof enclosure for the BL2 portable use. Now I started looking at web offerings and was not pleased. So, I went to the hardware store and bought a 3x outlet black plastic enclosure, ugly but was a start. If you band saw all of the unnecessary flanges etc, you end up with a box that will house the BL2. It is a little wide and that is an effort to work on later. Cut a front and back panel and install the antenna feed throughs and a hole in the bottom for the BNC and you have a 13.5 ounce package. I can't get into the Yahoo group site to post pictures, but can send picture direct for those interested. Mel, I would suggest giving up on reading posts via the system provided by Yahoo. For the Yahoo Groups that I follow, I have the posts downloaded as email, so I rarely sign on to Yahoo groups. My email client has filters set to put each post into the correct folder based on the [GROUP] designation in the subject line. If you want to view posts using webmail (say on a mobile device), tell your local email client to keep emails for some length of time (I use 7 days), and then look at your ISP's webmail service to see what has come in. Just my humble opinion, but I think it is more sane that logging onto a variety of Yahoo Groups to see recent posts. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/23/2014 6:13 PM, Mel Farrer wrote: OT. [Elecraft] K3 issue in CW mode
I just turned on my 2m transverter and when I went back to 6m my CW doesn't work. The display shows + and T and I don't get any power out in CW. Other modes work fine. I looked at instructions but couldn't figure it out. Re: [Elecraft] K3 issue in CW mode
In CW mode it still will not get any power out and I am stuck with the T in the lower right part of the display. CW was working fine until I went to 2m and then returned back to 6m and then subsequently to HF. All other modes are working fine. Any thoughts or ideas of what I have done would be helpful.
