[Elecraft] K3 EZ fromm N2BC

2012-08-04 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Good afternoon gentlemen,

Does anybody know what has happened to N2BC's website? I was looking for
the K3 EZ software but can't seem to find it anywhere.

[Elecraft] FS: KRC2

2012-02-01 Thread Maarten
For sale KRC2.

Worked well with my K3.

I sold my K3 and the KRC2 does not work with my Kenwood TS-590.

This is a sale as is as I have no way if testing the unit.

It was working with my K3 a year ago but your experience might differ.

What I mean is that for questions how to make it work with the K3 or any
other rig you are on your own.

Re: [Elecraft] PAR ENDFEDZ antennas

2011-06-09 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Hello Bob,

I have used the 20 and 40 meter mono band antenna's, both work great.
There's nothing magical about these antennas but I feel that there is no
easier/quicker way to get on-air with a good signal then with an end fed
antenna like the ones from PAR electronics.
Some of my friends have borrowed my antennas to use them during holiday
operations. All of them were so enthusiastic that most of them have bought
similar antennas.

PAR electronics don't make them anymore. Dale has sold the end fedz part of
the company to LNR Precision: http://www.lnrprecision.com/

There are also two Dutch amateurs who make these antenna:
http://www.hyendfedantenna.nl/joomla/
These antennas can handle a bit more power but I guess that's not a big deal
for QRP operations ;-)

73, Maarten

2011/6/9 Linda and Bob dlrwi...@verizon.net

Has anyone used the Par ENDFEDZ dipole antennas for QRP in the field or at
home for fixed operation? They seem to have very good reviews on Eham.net.
 I
am interested in their 30 meter and 20 meter monoband dipoles to use at
 home
and in the field with my K1-4 and maybe my future KX-3. Thanks.

What a great FD and portable radio.

How much might it cost, any ideas?

I need to know so I can save for it. After I finish saving for the KPA500

Re: [Elecraft] Something *really* new at Dayton from Elecraft

2011-05-21 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Wayne, Eric and the rest of the Elecraft crew, congratulations on your great
new transceiver.
The new KX3 looks really neat and it has a couple of very nice features. The
Dual watch is a feature I would really love to see on my K3 because I don't
have a second receiver.
Since there is a optional second receiver available for the K3 it will
probably not be available for the K3.
Now, I'm not a technical person but I'm just wandering if a feature like
dual watch can be added to a K3 by a software update at all?

...A man can dream can't he? ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Very cool Earth Screw at Lee Valley Tools... Just a tad O/T

2011-05-17 Thread Maarten van Rossum
I use these:
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSqryMls2ojpz4K_cNSLt0h1y744kO8i4uQNQXAhkNENVTAcxK3
They are really inexpensive, just a couple of Euro's, and depending on soil
conditions can easily support large vertical antenna's or other poles.
You could try camping stores and look for umbrella/parasol screws as someone
mentioned before.

2011/5/17 John W2XS jm...@optonline.net

I have used the Earthworm for 20' poles:

 http://www.shadeusa.com/beach_umbrella_holders.htm

I may try the larger version for a Jackite 31' pole.

Speaking of Jackite, they also have pole mounts:

 https://www.jackite.com/index.php?cPath=49osCsid=a67fb225b320106a42f629bbe263bd26

 I use a Jackite pole to hold up a 300-ohm twinlead-fed 66' inverted-V that
works FB on 40m to 10m with my K2/KAT2 via a B1 4:1 balun. It is so nice to
have all those bands available when operating from the picnic table at the
 park.

It might be the default AGC settings that you are struggling with. If
your K3 sounds noisy between stations, or between pauses in the other
station's transmissions, then I suggest that the AGC Threshold and Slope
settings may not be right for your situation.

Please review the Noisy K3 article on my website for additional
information and a guide to choosing your own AGC menu settings.

Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 relay boxes used?

2010-12-24 Thread Maarten
I use the MFJ-4716, 6 port Remote antenna switch. I believe there is also a
4 port switch. This switch is very easy to connect to the KRC2 and works at
KW level. Each relais can be activated with 12 V volt from the KRC2. You can
make the connection via with RJ45 connector on the back of the MFJ box. It
requires a little reverse engineering to figure out which wire activates
each port.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] Re: SSB receive audio quality

2010-12-23 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Thanks Hector,

With your help and the help of others I got my K3 sounding similar now and
the way it sounds now is quite sweet.

Off topic:
Funny to hear that in you actually talked about me in a QSO with PI4DX
(operator Johan PD2DX). You transmission is not in the audio file but you
probably asked Johan if it was him who climbed one of the PI4DX towers you
can see on QRZ.com. In the audio clip you hear Johan explain that is was me
who climbed that tower, HI.

For the ones who will like to hear how well the K3 sounds click on this
link to access a directory of MP3's on my own website:

 http://www.ad4c.us/Elecraft%20K3/shared%20files%20from%20K3%20users/AD4C%20recordings%20on%20his%20K3/
Then you can make your mind if it sound good or bad compared with other
 radios.
 AD4C

It sure would be nice for people passing these judgments to provide sound
clips that demonstrates this. It really isn't rocket science to run a rig's
audio into a soundcard and make an fb recording and then more than one
person can listen, compare, and discuss.

Re: [Elecraft] New feature Documentation in presentation format

2010-12-08 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Ten Tec has made some instruction videos for some of their transceivers.
They are on youtube and you can find links to those videos on their website.
I found them to be very useful and I don't even own one of their products.
I would be great if Elecraft (or perhaps a experienced user) would do
something similar and they would probably benefit from it as well. I always
thought my K3 had poor RX audio but it turned out that my AGC settings were
not set up correctly. After finding some interesting notes on how to adjust
the AGC and RX EQ I felt confident enough to play with the settings myself.
The result was that I'm now pretty happy with my K3 and I can only wonder
what else my K3 still has to offer.
With that experience in mind it makes me wonder how many potential buyers
who where not satisfied with the RX audio and therefore excluded the K3 from
their shortlist, did so without ever giving the K3 the chance it deserves.

I believe my understanding of the English language is reasonable and I have
no problem reading books, having a conversation in English or writing this
post for that matter. But reading and understanding an operating manual,
despite that it is well written, can be difficult at times. Operating tips
and hints on video would definitely be very helpful.

2010/12/8 Dave Perry n...@comcast.net

I like the idea of webinars. They are used a lot in my industry. They
tend to be on a specific topic and last 1 hour. Elecraft could charge a
small fee to cover costs. If you cannot make a specific webinar, then they
are usually available after the fact via DVD for a small fee as well.

I would also like to suggest a series of online video tutorials on each
feature within the K3. I have seen this done very successfully in the
software industry. Our POS software vendor has a whole series of videos
posted on its website that focus on how to use major features within the
software. They tend to last 5 to 10 minutes -- similar to what you might
see on YouTube but are more professionally produced. Many integrate
PowerPoint with video and audio demonstrations. They need to be
professionally produced and have a consistent format. The topics could
start out at the beginner level and then progress to very advanced subjects
-- such as how to adjust AGC slope. It would be great if the tutorials
could hit every major feature within the K3 and even be referenced
throughout a newly enhanced User Manual.

I've had my K3 for a year and a half now and I am still learning how to use
many of the advanced features. But that is what I love about the K3. You
don't outgrow it within a month or two. There is always more to learn and
discover -- plus new features like the P3 and APF.

Webinars and video tutorials would really put the K3 out in front of the
other manufacturers! Like I said, both are done a lot in my industry.

mode, I use the Escape button on my keyboard. In N1MM that works great but
as far as I know, only in N1MM.
So Nicks suggestion sounds good to me.

 -*snip-*

Maybe one small suggestion for a tweak. I used the auto-repeat memory
function for CQing. My impulse was to tap the paddle to stop message
sending if someone would begin to respond. But that would send a dit
(or dah) and I'd miss part of his call. Perhaps while in auto-send
mode, the first tap of the paddle should stop sending but not be
 transmitted.

I am relatively new to the K3 and completely green on contesting.

My K3 is new this year and recently returned from the factory to correct
some problems that occurred during installation of the SubRx.

During Field Day we were operating voice on 20 meters using a 6 element
monoband Yagi on a 30 ft. tower over a bluff, located in Western
  Washington.

We had both my K3 and an Icom Pro 3 as choices for the operators. We
heard fine on the K3 but the conclusion was reached early that the K3
was not effective at breaking the Field Day pileups. They shifted to
the Pro3, which was equipped with a high end Heil dual element mic, I
think the HM-10. They reported much better results.

I went back and checked the K3 and found the mic settings were out of
adjustment. I corrected the mic gain according to the manual
instructions and set a small amount of compression, less than ten
percent. I then locked the settings so no one could mess with them.
At that point the band was dead, and I don't have enough information to
tell if the problem was solved or not.I do intend to check this out
further with someone local who is familiar with the K3 on voice.

What I am looking for is suggestions for configuring the Tx on SSB for
  maximum effectiveness in crowded conditions.

I am currently using the Heil MD-2 desk mic that I got from Elecraft
  some years ago.

Hello Mike,

No problem using my K3's DVR with N1MM and the Microham USB III.
Using the F buttons to key the KDVR works great. Also tried the Enter

It's just a USB to serial interface (OK, it has a build in sound card) so
why wouldn't it work?

anyone used a usbIII from Microham and n1mm.

I travel on occasion to different places for contests and keeping
equipment to a minimum or at least minimum space is always an
objective. Has anyone used the usbIII and n1mm? If I remember
correctly the usb III is only good for cw and digital modes (but I could
be wrong!) has anyone tried to key a k3dvr with a usb III in line? or
is this something that needs to be out of the line if try to key the

in other words can you send the command through the usb III to the K3 or
does it have to be removed?

Re: [Elecraft] How to pronounce the /?

2010-04-02 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Thanks everybody,

Your replies haven been very helpful. After reading through them all I
discovered it's best to stick with stroke in stead off portable.
I was lead to belive that portable was the better word because of what a
Dutch ham living in the USA said to me the other day. He claimed the word
stroke sounded silly, hence my confusion.

As David G4DMP showed in his reply, we are supposed to put the visited
countries prefix before our own callsign. It's clearly stated in the CEPT
license were he looked it up (why didn't I think of that...).
This visit I will not be portable, in September during the IARU region 1
fieldday we will be. If all goes according to plan you will be able to hear
us as OZ5GX/P (Oscar Zulu Five Golf Xray Portable).

Thanks again for all the helpful replies, It's much appreciated.

CW DX was both amazing and fun! The world opened up, and the K3 brought
great joy in being able to not only hear them all, but work them all! There
 wasn't a call that I heard I couldn't get a report back from! 24 hours of
the day I checked in, and it was always the same thing. Calls I hadn't
heard in YEARS all answering me on my little doublet antenna!

Yet, at Z time on Sunday the band droped out as if a nuclear bomb had
hit the entire world. What is wrong with Ham radio when we only know how to
enjoy our hobby when there's a contest?

At 0001z I sent a repeated CQ CQ CQ, it took till 0014z before someone 500
miles from me finally answered it. Yet 14 minutes before that I was hearing
Cuba, Ireland, the South Pacific and Finland all within 10KC of my CQ
 calling freq.

What an utter shame...Man, Ham radio really needs a good kick in the butt!

Re: [Elecraft] Amplifier suggestions?

2010-01-19 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Let's say, for argument's sake, I too have a THP 1.5 (which I do not). My
work and family take up most, if not all of my time. I can only put a couple
of feet of wire to use as a antenna because of HOAs. I have 10 countries
confirmed because I don't care for QSL cards or LOTW.
Does that make it a bad amplifier? I hope not.

I don't actually own a Acom 1000 but have used one for many hours at our
contest station or during field days. We Also use a ACOM 2000. Both
amplifiers are very good and near bullet proof. It has a very good
protection system which shuts down the amp if something is wrong. That said,
it will take a wide range of SWR without shutting down which makes it easy
to use because you don't have to retune it every time. If you do have to
tune the 1000, it will only take you a couple of seconds because tuning is a
breeze. The 2000 is fully automatic so you tuning that monster is even more
easy.

Our amps get a lot of use and abuse but up till now we never had a problem.
To give an example, last year we went to OZ to participate in the IARU
region 1 field day with the OZ5GX group. I had met them a year earlier
during summer holidays. During the field day we obviously used a generator
to power our equipment. It was a Diesel generator which provided 380 V.
After some rewiring we got 230 V which we needed for our equipment. After a
couple of hours something went wrong and the Acom started to shut itself
down repeativly and on the display it showed a code of letters and numbers.
I grabbed the manual to find out what it meant. I quickly found out it meant
High Voltage so I decided to check the voltage at the power outlets. The
multi meter showed 270 V (!). We quickly switched off all equipment and the
generator. None of the other equipment showed any problems but thanks to the
Acom we new that something was wrong and were able to fix it before any
damage was done.
As for the THP, I never used one so I can't comment on that amp.

Was over at a friends shack who is driving a Tokyo High Power 1.5

through to a South African station first call on RTTY and then
switched over to SSB and used a vertical to work a ZD station I
think. Got through the pile up on first call. Very impressive. He
has 296 countries confirmed and has a FT-930 which sits in the corner
 unused.

From what I saw, if the THP 1.5 is in your budget you probably
 wouldn't be disappointed.

Re: [Elecraft] [HAM] Hi Q versus Vertical

2010-01-03 Thread Maarten van Rossum
The antenna by itself maybe small, but keep in mind that in order to make it
function properly, you need radials and lots of 'em.
If you mount the vertical on the ground, radial length is less important. If
you mount is with elevated radials you need at least 2 tuned radials for
each band to make it work.
But you can find that info on the SteppIR Website as well so you probably no
this already ;-)

And I just thought you would like to know that SteppIR has just announced

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noisy K3 receiver

2009-12-19 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Correct me if I'm wrong Richard, but are you saying that the noise,
whatever color it may be, is something we all have to put up with? And since
2 years have past, we have lost the right to say anything about it?

There are a lot off people who find this topic very helpful. You obviously
do not and consider it noise floor. As far as I can tell, nobody is
twisting your arm and makes you read this topic so don't read it if it
bothers you that much.

I hope that with the help of this topic on the reflector, I too am able to
set my K3 correctly for my circumstances so I too can enjoy noise free
reception.

Thank you for your contribution.

2009/12/19 Richard Squire - HB9ANM hb9...@bluewin.ch

I'll second that, Ian! I'm lucky to live in quite, rural QTH with no
 computers around except my own...
So the K3's inherent white/pink or whatever colour noise is certainly
something that can be put up with, as in ANY other DSP rig. Wonder why this
topic suddenly pops up - and seems to be relevant to so many after 2
years... causing such a noise floor on the reflector! I listened to
 FT2Ks,
Orions, ... then purchased the K3. I must have had some good reasons.

Re: [Elecraft] Thoughts on what I am begging to see on the reflector

2009-12-19 Thread Maarten van Rossum
I couldn't agree more. Thank you.

2009/12/19 van fair g...@bellsouth.net

Gentlemen, I am a two year veteran of the FT2000 reflector and I am
beginning to see some of the same type of thoughts that turned that
reflector into a total mess. Most of us including me think the K3 is a fine
rig and I have been instrumental in selling 5 of them for Elecraft thus far.

We do not need cheerleaders for the K3. The K3 and Wayne and Eric, et all,
can take care of themselves. When complaints occur, especially when made by
a number of users such as the comments about noise, There is no need for
anyone to suggest that they need to leave or go away or change subjects or
anything else. Lets let everybody have their say even when you dont agree
and feel they are talking down the worlds greatest ham rig from the most
responsive company in the business. Comments like read the manual, learn how
to set up the rig, This rig is for experienced operators and appliance uses
should move on, etc, are of very little value to anyone and only poison the
group. If the threads get too much for you then use the delete or an email
 filter,

With the number of K3s being sold we will get new members every day, what
is old and worn out info to you is new for them. I urge you all to
discipline yourself and what you have to say and make sure that what you
say, provides info, assistance or ask for help. Nothing wrong with saying I
dont have that problem or what you did to solve it but please dont feel the
need to rise to defend the radio from every negative comment. I dont think
Wayne or Eric want us to do that.

Thanks for the bandwidth. Van W4GIW a ham for 58 years.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noisy K3 receiver

2009-12-19 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Hi Richard,

About I year ago the subject was discussed on the reflector as well. Just
like it does now it then caused a lot of discussion too. If I remember it
correctly Elecraft came up with a firmware release which provided more low
audio response partially because of that discussion on the reflector.
Among others, K8ZOA wrote an article about the different parameters of the
AGC which helped a lot of people to set up the AGC correctly.
It seems to me that now, a year later, that article has dropped to the
background and new users seem to struggle with a correct AGC setting.
It's certainly is not something new, people have mentioned it before and I
like to believe it's still a work in progress.

P.s. This is the article I reffered to:

Hi Maarten. It is a fact that DSP receivers tend to have a somewhat higher
noise floor. I am certainly not suggesting anybody lost his rights to talk
about it. But what puzzles me is why this topic now suddenly pops up more
two years after the first K3s appeared in the ham community? There must be
some good reason why nobody raised the subject before... Until someone
 sparked a tsunami of comments!

Hector,

I have listened to one of your audio files, the one you send to PD2DX (who
was operating at PI4DX) last weekend. I know that my K3 just doesn't sound
like that. It's close, but not quiet there. I have tried several settings
with the help of K8OAZ pdf file on how to set the AGC. This has improved the

do it.

 Mike,

That could easily happen if you have the AGC on. That would be
especially true if you have the preamp on when it is not needed and are
running the RF Gain at its full setting. With a signal present, the AGC
is acting to keep the receiver gain low, but when the signal is no
longer present, the receiver bounces back to full gain.

Try the same test with the AGC off and the preamp off (even with the
attenuator on) and the RF Gain backed down so the no-signal noise with
your vertical connected is just perceivable. Then tune in a signal,
note its strength and remove the antenna. The noise level should be
absent (unless you have the AF Gain set really high). If you still get
noise with no antenna, you have a receiver fault that needs attention.

Is this a software problem with spectravue?

[Elecraft] K3 VHf use

2009-09-22 Thread Maarten
Since one week I am a K3 owner with the KXV3A option. When hooking up the
XV50,144,222,432 transverters I noticed that the only option with the K3 and
the KXV3A is separate transmit and receive IF ports. Is there a setting in
the K3 to share a single IF port for TX and RX? It would save me some
cables.

Also is there a setting in the K3 that when one switches from SSB to CW the
frequency is automatically adjusted for the CW offset. This is really handy
for VHF/UHF work as there is often a mix of SSB and CW signals during band
openings. One often switches from SSB to CW for a weak CW DX signal. It is
very frustrating having to retune the weak station when switching modes. The
Icom 756 and Flexradio PowerSDR have this option. The K3 with the excellent
XV transverters should have this option available too.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 VHf use

2009-09-22 Thread Maarten
Yes I figured that one out. Going from SSB to CWrev I still have to retune
(+600Hz) to copy CW as the CW signal is at zero beat. Going from CW to SSB I
have to tune 600Hz down.
If you work VHF/UHF you understand what a convenience it is when you change
from SSB to CW mode, that the zero beat frequency shifts by whatever your
selected CW pitch is so you do not have to retune again.

You know what, I guess that Steve already knew that the K3's display wasn't

important, it should be more or less plug and play.

PC's and I don't go very well together and although the LP PAN stuff looks

Silence before the storm. I never expected the 144 MHz transverter module
for the K3 but it appeared out of the blue.
Who knows, maybe they are working hard on the new kit as we speak to
surprise us all in the near future... (a guy can dream, can't he?)

Re: [Elecraft] LP PAN and Point and Click

2009-07-23 Thread Maarten van Rossum
After reconsidering I came to the conclusion that I just want to be able to
see a portion of the band I'm on.
Sure, point and click would be nice but if I really want that, I'll go with
the all ready existing panadapter or something like Flexradio.

Yes, I have a PC in my shack and it is used for logging and updating the K3
and surfing on the www, that's it. I don't want it to do anything else. I
just don't get along with those darn things.
When I was young all my friends were starting to get familiar with PC's. My
parents didn't buy one because they thought it was just a hype and it would
blow over. Boy were they wrong. By the time we finally got one all my
friends could do magic with these things (at least in my eyes they could)
and all I could do with it was turning it on and off. I lost interest before
I even got started.
When I got older I got confronted with fact that I couldn't get around
them so I learned how to use then but I never could really enjoy it. I still
don't for that matter.

I'm probably missing out on a whole bunch of stuff but I guess I don't know
exactly what it is that I'm missing and therefore I don't Miss it. (that
sentence can't be wright but I think you know what I mean)

I will now go to start and turn off my PC (I know, that's Windows and not
the PC itself) and turn on the K3 to make some Q's.

P.s. just now I wanted to copy/paste this text I just wrote so I could check
the spelling on a online spellchecker. Now the darn thing won't copy/paste
anymore?!?! It is probably something I did and I will figure it out but it
just bugs me. So, I'm sorry for any spelling errors.

[Elecraft] K3 not transmitting anymore

2009-06-07 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Today I was playing with my K3 AGC settings to learn more about them. At
some point I had placed my Heil Pro Set Plus on top of the K3. A strong
signal presented itself resulting in a increased audio level from the K3’s
speaker. Unfortunately VOX was still on and the K3 started transmitting. I
quickly tried to disengage the VOX but mistakenly hit the power button.

When I turned the K3 back on it wouldn’t transmit anymore. Not with the mic
connected to the rear panel nor from the frond panel. Using VOX of XMIT
button makes no difference.
The only way the K3 will transmit is when I use the internal ATU. The
recorded messages from de DVR worked at first but turning the power off and
on once more resulted in the loss of the recorded messages and I am not able
to transmit new messages.

In TEST mode it is exactly the same, no audio from the mic.

I’m afraid I really “foecked oep” this time and that I will have to contact
Elecraft and do some repair work :-(

Re: [Elecraft] K3 not transmitting anymore

2009-06-07 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Thank you Dave for your reply, but it was a entirely different problem.

I'm embarrassed like you won't believe. Before posting my problem on the
reflector I thought I had checked everything to make sure that is was a
genuine problem. After an hour of doing something else, I turned the K3 back
on and went through all the knobs once more to find out that the MIC gain
was set to 0. I had been playing with the MIC gain earlier before and I
guess at some point turned the knob counter clockwise. Why? I do not have a
clue.

I'm glad though that my problem is fixed without having to repair
anything. Except for my ego that is...

Best 73,
A embarrassed person

2009/6/7 Dave, G4AON elecr...@astromag.co.uk

I had a similar oops with my K3, a faulty cable/adapter on the KEY input
socket caused my K3 to go to full CW carrier output on 6m, in a hurry to
stop the transmission, I turned the power supply mains off as the K3's
controls seemed to be locked... Big mistake, the uncontrolled power down of
the K3 while transmitting somehow seems to have put out RF on the KXV3 RF
IN/OUT line and damaged an external 6m pre-amp that was in use at the time.

 There are two issues here:

 1. If a power supply fails the K3 doesn't seem to do an orderly shutdown if
it's transmitting at the time of power failure.

 2. The KXV3 shouldn't be able to output TX RF power from the receive
 external filter/pre-amp sockets.

I have repaired my 6m pre-amp (not the Elecraft PR6), but am wary of using
the K3 on 6m again, my TS480SAT doesn't need a pre-amp and will continue to
be my radio of choice for 6m.

Yes, that is great service!

I was not aware the my question on the reflector would stir thing up the way
it dit. I´m not verry technical and I thought I had some setting messed up
with my K3 which resulted in the bad audio. Given all the great response on
the reflector I´m kind of lost in all the things that could be causing the
less then diserable audio.

In hindsite I feel that maybe it was better to contact Elecraft personaly.
But again, I was not aware that I would lead to this much response.

I am greatfull that Wayne is willing to help me out with this. It might take
a wile before I can get the audio recordings because I´m not quiet sure how
to make those recordings. Making the recordings shouldn´t be that hard,
getting the Icom next to my K3 is a different problem. We use our own
radio´s at our contest station and last time I brought my K3 and another
operator brought his IC-7700. I can make a comparison with a FT 1000D from a
friend who lives nearby.

Thank you Wayne for your offer to sort this out, I´ll try to make the
recordings a.s.a.p.

[Elecraft] My K3's hissy and noisy audio

2009-04-05 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Hello everybody,

During last CQ WPX contest I got the chance to put my K3 to work at our
contest station PI4DX. We participated in the Multi One klass which allows
us to use 2 radio's, one running station and one multiplier station.
We used my K3 on the running station and a Icom IC-7700 on the multiplier
station. This was actually the first time I could compare the K3 to a high
end transceiver such as the IC-7700. I was surprised to find out that the
7700 sounded much better. The receiver was less noisy an easier to listen
to. Several other operators also stated the K3's audio was hissy and sharp
and not nice and smooth.
We could hear it using the built-in speaker as well as on a Heil Pro Set
Plus.
The RX EQ is flat and I used the 2.7 filter on a 2.7 KHz bandwidth.
Narrowing the bandwidth makes it worse but that is to be expected. No NB or
NR was used. AFX on or off makes no difference. In addition to the 2.7 KHz
filter my K3 also has the 2.1, 1.8 KHz and the 400 Hz filters. It doesn't
have the 2nd receiver, the KXV3, KBPF3, or the KTCXO3. It does have the
KDVR3, KAT3 and the KPA3. (will order a KXV3 module shortly)

After reading all these glowing reports on the K3's smooth receiver I can
only draw one conclusion; there must be something wrong with my K3.

What could it be?

Re: [Elecraft] My K3's hissy and noisy audio

2009-04-05 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Thanks everybody for your replies,

I have played with the shift and Hi/Low cut and although it does help, it's
not what is should be.
The radio was not used in a noisy environment, it is usually fairly quiet
here. I will however have a look into the AGC settings and see if that
brings any help.

I still think there is more to this but I cannot really put my finger on it.
The difference between both radio's was pretty big.

 Maarten,

Without severe modification to the KAT3 including the addition of another

 do as you suggest.

The KXV3 option does provide the receive antenna capability and I would
 suggest adding that option.

Well, K1 is in some parts of the world know as a martial arts fighting

Especially in Japan it is hugely popular. K1 is a sport not for the faint

The K2 is very well know as the second largest mountain in the world. To
climb the K2 is not for the faint hearted.

In Holland and Belgium K3 is known for something completely different. The

I assume your are talking about TX audio because you are asking about what
microphone we recommend.
You can use pretty much every microphone you can find and get good audio
reports. You can adjust the K3 so it will accept a very wide range of
microphones. Some of us get good reports with a cheap gaming headset, others
use more expensive headsets like the Heil Pro Set Plus. You can't really go
wrong.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - CQWWSSB Contest

2008-10-28 Thread Maarten van Rossum
I second that!

I participated in the CQ WW SSB in teh single band single opp high power
class. At the end of the weekend I had 1236 Q´s and 109 multipliers which I
think is not so bad considering the fact that I was not able to use the amp
the entire weekend and hardly got any cluster spots due to a bad packet
connection.
It was the first time I entered the single band single opp class and
although I have done some contesting, I still have much to learn. You might
have heard me as PI4COM.

The K3 didn´t let me down and I think it was a great partner in this
weekends contest. That said, I think life could have been somewhat easier
had I known how to set I up correctly.
This was the first time I could really use my K3 (serial # 1849) in crowded
band conditions so I´m still learning how to get the most out of its
performance.

A couple of months ago I read something about some sort of manual on how to
set up your K3 for specific situations. Unfortunately I have not heard from
it since.

I to would really like to have some guide lines on how to set up the K3.

73, Maarten
PD2R

P.S. The only problems I had with the K3 was the VOX button and the SSB
power. Regarding the VOX, if I had to cough, I regularly switched bands.
The SSB power out put problem is a know problem and I have complete faith in
the guys at Elecraft that they will get that fixed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB is it really better

2008-10-23 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Bjorn,

We have already exchanged emails about this but just to be sure, did you
change the TXG VCE to a lower setting?
In my case setting it to - 3 dB (minimum) made all the difference. Now even
in the first few seconds it puts out right amount of power.

Gary also told me te set the PS to 14.0 VDC because I was not able to get
full power (100 W) om 6, 10, 12 and 160 m. Changing it form 13.8 tot 14
VDC corrected that and now all is perfect except for 160. On the Top Band it
is negligible 5 W short.

As far a I can tell, my K3 is doing what it´s supposed to do. During the CQ
WW SSB this weekend I will give it a run for it´s money ;-)

 Rich,

There where a lot of replies on the RX, and it's great but I also like to
comment on the K3 when it comes to SSB TX:

Audio processing - I get great reports using the HC-4 and compression and
its easy to setup. With the 3.5 mm audio plugs I can use any headset
available, my preference is a DT-234 fitted with a HC-4. I have not used the
TX audio EQ, but I am sure you can tweak other microphones to suit your
needs with it. Another fab addition is the audio gate that came with the
latest beta firmware. It works great in silencing those noisy fans for
 better readability.

Another thing I like is the ability to set different power levels for each
band, makes it easier and faster to optimize drive power for the amp for
 faster band change.

One thing I am not happy with is the fact that my K3 puts 1.5 times the
power the first 5-7 seconds after a TUNE or band change. It is like ALC
needs some time to stabilize when I start transmitting... I believe it is a
flaw in firmware as several others have reported the same or similar
behavior, and support has been notified. Except for this, I am very happy
with the K3 also for SSB contesting and DX'ing.

20m will be a mess and I'd like to think the K3 will help with crowded

Heil Pro set Plus with HC4-DX and HC5 full range elements, but you can get

That really helps during Multi/Multi SSB Contesting ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power problems

2008-10-20 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Thank you all for the great response.

I think I got the problem solved by setting the TXO VCE to -3 dB. I still
has a slightly higher power out put in the first couple of seconds when
transmitting for the first time after setting the power level.
For instance, when I set the power to 100 W. it first puts out 110 W and
after a couple of seconds it will remain at approximately 100 W.
When te power level is set to 50 W, the first couple of seconds the meter
tells me it puts out 60 W and then it drops to 50 W.
It slightly varies on other bands. To me that sounds acceptabel.

On the other hand, what is the down side of having to set te TXO VCE to -3
dB (that is the minimum)?

If I use the TUNE button, it will put out 100 W, now problem. It only
happens on SSB when using a microphone

The MIC GAIN and the COMPRESSION levels are set correctly, I get good audio
reports so there is no reason to question that. I haven't used the TX EQ for
now, I will experiment with that later.

I have also loaded the latest firmware, 2.46 if I´m not mistaken.

Thanks again for the great help!

[Elecraft] K3 Power problems

2008-10-17 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Hello,

I'm having problems with my power out put. I have followed the calibration
procedure and the K3 more or less puts out the desired power on all bands.
(I'm not sure how accurate my PWR meter is)
The problem occurs in SSB when I'm using a microphone (Heil pro set plus or
a Kenwood MC-43S, that doesn't matter). When I have set the power to 100W
and I yell Oooolaaa (into a dummy load off course) into the mic, the PA
puts out full power en after a couple off seconds it drops to the set power.
When I do the same with the power set 50 W, it produces around 70 W and
again, after a few seconds the power drops to 50 W.

After the initial power drop it pretty much stays at the pre set power but
when I rotate the PWR knob and set the power to a different level, the same
thing happens again.

This only happens when using microphones. When using the TUNE button this
doesn't happen.

What is wrong?

[Elecraft] Help needed, ERR VCO

2008-10-12 Thread Maarten van Rossum
Hello All,

Last week I put together my K3 serial number 1849. Right after the
first calibration I ran into a problem. The display showed ERR VC4 E

After contacting Elcraft I got an email from Garry explaining to me
how I could fix the problem by spreading the turns on the T1 VCO
inductor on the KSYN3 board.
Today I was able to try and fix the error and I followed Garry's
instructions to the letter.
Did it help? I'm not sure. I don't get the ERR VC4 E 00039 massage
anymore but insted I get an ERR VCO E 00178 message.

I have to wait another day to contact Garry but maybe one off you guys
