Re: [Elecraft] Stupid question: key beep

2019-04-05 Thread Cady, Fred
Sorry John, I misread your post. To have the sw tones, SW TONE should be ON.
If it is, I don't know why you don't get tones except some switches like REV
and M1 - M4 don't generate tones.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem with new KAT500

2019-03-24 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Dave,

Basically you shouldn't be running in Auto mode because if the tuner happens to
calculate a "bad" swr it will try to retune even though it doesn't have to.

You should just train the tuner for your operating frequencies and then operate
in Manual mode.

Here are a couple of pdf files that may help you understand a bit more how the
amp and tuner work.

I just received a new factory built KAT500 a few days ago.

I am using it with my K3 and KPA500 cabled with (2) E850463 Aux interface
cables as in Figure 1 on page 5 of the KAT500 manual.

I have recently updated the firmware on both the K3 and KPA500.

I am running about 250W on FT8. The K3 output is about 12W.

My problem is in "auto" mode. The tuner suddenly tries to tune, searching
for a solution when it doesn't require tuning. This is without any change in
frequency.

This causes the amplifier keying to be disabled. There are no fault
conditions on either the tuner or the amp.

This occurs on any of my antennas including a Steppir that has a 1.2 SWR
without the tuner.

Everything is fine in "manual" mode.

I have read and reread the manual and don't see anything that I am doing
incorrectly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I would very heartily agree. I have the Cady manual for all my Elecraft (all
the radios that he wrote a manual for) radios and they are a joy to use, not
only for info on the specific radio but also the extra info that is helpful to
any ham. His trouble shooting lists for "when you can't make a contact" are
invaluable for ANY radio, Elecraft or other. Also his latest book about
everything a ham radio operator needs to know is a joy to read and a great
refresher to this guy who has been a ham since 1960. I will buy anything he
writes in the future. Check out his list on the Elecraft site or Lulu Books.
(I am not related to Fred. I just like his information and style of writing.)

Ken,

If that Send cable is the only one you have connected between your Icom
and the KAT500, you need to feed a bit of RF to initiate a TUNE

The KAT500 will first look for a saved L/C combination for that antenna
and frequency and will switch to that rather than doing a TUNE.
Secondly, it will compute the SWR and if it is below 1.5, it will go
into bypass - no tuning is necessary.

Is it possible that either one of those conditions exist?

It seems these days that the "Amateur media," which includes all of us
conversing on the air or via email lists, tends to dismiss LTPA [less
than perfect antennas] which may be discouraging some Technicians from
trying out their HF allocations on 10, 15, 40, and 80. Hard core DX'ers
and contesters will scoff at a BWD-90 or my end-fed 80-10 at 6 ft on the
wooden fence, and I don't intend to make the Honor Roll with it, but
antennas don't need to be perfect to work and even work well. I snagged
VP6D on 40, 30, 20, and 17 CW with 100 W to my WOOF [Wire On Organic
Fence] and it was easy. The SOTA folk don't buy a tower, they just hike
up a mountain. I worked two DL's in a row on 15 CW a couple years ago
from W5N/RO-015 in SE NM with 10 W from my K2 into an Alexloop over my head.

If we want younger people to try out HF, we need to assure them that
they don't have to spend a year's take-home pay to get on and have fun.
Wayne has been relating some of his QRP-ish field adventures which is
really great. Full Disclosure: I'm part of the W7RN crew and have
remote access to the two remote K3/KPA1500 combos and 23 antenna
selections [last count [:-) w7rn.com] including a 3-el 80 yagi at 175
ft. Most of the time however, my K3/WOOF serves my needs which leaves
the remotes to those on the crew who have no other option. RF current
into a conductor will radiate, even if it's at eye level.

[Elecraft] New KE7X book

2018-10-02 Thread Cady, Fred
Fred, KE7X, and Vic, VE3YT, have announced a new book called “The Successful
Ham Radio Operator’s Handbook – Best Practices for all Hams”. This 267 page
manual is aimed at the newly licensed ham who is trying to understand where to
go next or the old-timer coming back to the hobby and learning about all the
changes in radios and modes that have happened during years of inactivity due
to a career and family. In it are explanations of how the various parts of the
ham radio - the transmitter and receiver - work plus how these are being
implemented using software designed radio technology. Operating techniques for
VHF/UHF repeaters, HF radio DXing techniques, and the new digital modes are
covered. Radio propagation, antennas, transmission lines, SWR and the mysteries
of baluns are explained. Building your HF station, choosing a radio, connecting
your radio to a computer, and mobile and portable operation are extensively
covered. The book follows KE7X's philosophy of presenting material in several
forms to accommodate people with different learning styles -- reading,
visualizing, hands-on -- with the many figures and text explanations. There
are hands-on exercises throughout the book that can help you learn more about
any particular radio.
Please go to www.ke7x.com to find more details and to see
how this book differs from other introductory books.
Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SPEAKER

2018-08-29 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi don,

At one point Elecraft had to change the switch that cuts out speaker audio when
the phones are plugged in so there is a setting in CONFIG:SPRK+PH that selects
one of two action polarities. Tapping the 1 key toggles between PH.R SW-
(inverted) and PH.R SW+. Try changing that.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 SPEAKER

I apologise if this has been asked before, but I have a newly developed
problem with my K3.

In short, the speaker does not activate when the headphones are removed from
the front socket. I have tried both options under the speaker and phones
menu item. When "both" is selected, the speaker works fine with the phones
plugged in. But I want the facility to silence the speaker when using
phones, so I want to be able to select the other option, meaning that the
speaker only activates when the phones are unplugged. Selecting that option
does not activate the speaker when the phones are unplugged.

This is a new problem, and I can't understand why it's suddenly arisen. My
logic is that the 3.5mm jack socket on the rear of the rig (or the main one
on the front) is giving a false positive that the phones are plugged in,
when in fact they are not, thus disabling the speaker.

But before I start taking the hardware to bits, is there anything else I
have overlooked? I might add that I am running the latest firmware etc etc.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft P3 signal intensity

2018-08-18 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi,

"Why doesn’t the P3 signal strength agree with the K3S’s S-meter? You would
think the S-meter on the K3S and the signal displayed on the P3 would be the
same. There are several reasons why this might not be the case that have to do
with your display choices.
1.When the K3S SMTR MD menu is AbS, the K3S S-meter shows the
absolute signal at the antenna and does not change when the preamplifier or
attenuator are engaged. The signal at the antenna has an absolute power and
thus isn’t, nor should it be, affected by the K3S signal processing
preamplifier or attenuator. If the K3S SMTR MD menu is nor, changing the
preamplifier and attenuator will change the signal displayed on the K3S. This
shows you the affect of the preamplifier and attenuator. Meanwhile, if the K3S
and P3 serial ports are connected, the P3 knows the status of the preamplifier
and attenuator and adjusts its display accordingly. That is, the P3 always
operates in absolute mode showing you the power at the K3S antenna. So, when
SMTR MD menu is nor changing the preamplifier and attenuator will affect the
K3S S-meter but not the P3 display.
2.The signal level on the K3S and P3 depends on their respective
effective bandwidths. In the K3S the bandwidth is set by the pass band tuning
control. In the K3S the S-meter gives you a measure of the signal within the
K3S bandwidth. In the P3 the effective bandwidth is approximately the span
divided by 450 (there are 450 pixels displaying signals across the P3
display). In the P3 each pixel gives you a measure of the signal within the
effective bandwidth of the pixel. If the two bandwidths are different, the K3S
and P3 signal displays will be different.
This will particularly be evident with wideband signals such as SSB. Even when
the P3 span is 200 kHz its effective bandwidth per pixel is 440 Hz and it does
not contain the full signal that is seen on the K3S S-meter.
As an exercise, change to a relatively noisy band and change the width of the
pass band tuning. You should see less noise on the K3S display when the
bandwidth is narrower. While doing this you shouldn’t see any change in what
the P3 is displaying.
The bottom line here is “Don’t worry overmuch about the signal strength
readings.” Each display serves a different purpose. The K3S S-meter shows you
the signal strength of the signal(s) within its passband and the P3 shows you
the relative strengths of a number of signals shown in its span."

I have understood that it is normal that P3 with his extremely narrow IF give
lower S-units that the K3/K3S, but is it possible to adjust the P3 to give
same S-meter readings than my K3S?
Is there any way to give coherent signals intensity both K3 and P3?
On My P3 I read S6 a CW signal that is S9 on my k3S with his if 500hz wide.

Good afternoon. Reading the manual while I am waiting for parts. will be here
tomorrow. I see that there is auto band switching available. I will be using
a flex 6400M with the KPA and the KAT 500. I see that it talks about an aux
cable. Is this cable needed to accomplish band auto band switching.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] RS232 xcvr control when serial ports are occupied

2018-07-09 Thread Cady, Fred
Thanks Don. It must have been interesting working all that out. I used to
enjoy giving my students a history lesson explaining the control and
handshaking signals in the RS232 connector from basic principles, starting with
the Bell 103 modem. That didn't help explain the terminology and signal
naming problem that Andy had. Manufacturers were terrible at keeping to the
standard. And really, in isolation, it doesn't make sense that a signal named
TxD would be a input and not an output. Documentation was scanty and so the
scope, or my favorite test tool -- the RS232 Blinky Box -- had to be gotten out
to tell what was what.

The now used for other purposes signals are:
DTR -- from the terminal to the modem to tell the modem the Data Terminal was
ready. Now used for CW or PTT.

DSR -- From the modem to the terminal to indicate the modem was ready
(generally power on).

The Bell 103 could send data only in one direction at a time so RTS and CTS
were included to control the flow of the data.

RTS -- Request to Send from the terminal to the modem to request the line.

CTS -- Clear to send from the modem to the terminal to say the line was not
busy and to go ahead with sending the data.

RTS and CTS were also used to control the data flow from a fast device to a
slow device. I think there were some kenwood radios that used this scheme.

DCD -- Data Carrier Detected was used for the modem to tell the terminal that
the carrier from the other data set was being generated (the phone line was
working).

RI -- Ring Indicator asserted by the modem when it heard a ringing signal at
the other end of the telephone line.

As I remember it.

Cheers,
Fred KE7X

The computer is the DTE device, and those devices designed to connect to
the computer via the serial port are normally wired as DCE devices.

The original thought when the IBM PC serial port was designed was that
the PC would be used as a terminal connected to a modem, thus the
decision was that the PC should be a DTE - and for the first several
years the PC was used only as a terminal device. Yes, I was involved
during those early days, but not as a part of that decision making
process - I was involved with the IBM PC modems. My manager said I had
"M" engraved on my forehead.

Now we have the situation where the computer is the controller. It
would be very confusing to change the wiring of the computer, so it
remains as a DTE, and connecting devices (while not modems) are
configured as a DCE,

Andy,

No TXD is TXD all the way through the path. Yes, the DTE TXD will have
the drivers, and the DCE will have receivers, but it is TXD from end to

Trsnsmit and receive are named with respect to the DTE.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Antenna Memories

2018-07-01 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Joel,

I think you probably need to go into the KAT500 Utility to the Antenna
Configuration screen. You can check and uncheck the antennas needed for each
band. I don't have my station set up at the moment but something like this
might work:

Select Band 17 and 12, check Ant 1 and click apply

Select Band 20, 15, 10 and 6, check Ant 2 and click apply

Select Band 160, 80, 60, 40, and 30, check Ant 3 and click apply.

Tuner mode will be selected when you are on a band and you select the mode.

Note that you should train the tuner on 160, 80, 60, 40 and 30 and then run
Manual mode, not auto mode.

I don't think my KAT500 (FW 01.75) is old enuf to suffer from the kind of
memory problems I have, but it doesn't seem to do what I expect it to do. I
was just changing my antenna lineup and I have three antennas connected to
the rear:

Ant 1 -- a 17/12 m coupled resonator dipole -- wants to be in bypass mode
Ant 2 -- a 20/15/10 tribander with 6 m 3el coupled resonator -- wants to be
in bypass mode
Ant 3 -- an 80 CF-zepp -- wants to be in auto mode and used on 160, 80, 60,
40 and 30 meters

Each antenna wants to be the default on the bands shown, although Ant 3 can
be used on all bands, I can change manually if needed.

I can cause the tuner to remember to change antennas as I change bands, but
it won't seem to remember whether to be in auto or bypass mode as the band
changes. This is the case whether I just set it and use it on the bands, or
if I try using the config program (1.16.7.25) to force it. I don't think I'm
asking it to do more than it should -- am I missing a crucial step or
setting?

Re: [Elecraft] Filters

2018-06-30 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Bill,

Adjust the lo and hi cut filters to make the signal you are listening to sound
good (in the absence or QRM). In a crowded band with QRM on either side,
adjust either the lo or hi cut to reduce or eliminate the interference. Note
that the lo and hi refer to audio frequencies. If an interfering station has a
higher pitch, adjust the hi cut; lower pitch the lo cut. You shouldn't
consider these controls to be set and forget. They can be changed to meet
changing reception conditions.

Lo and hi cut have no effect on your transmitted signal.

Cheers and enjoy the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 Macro via the Kpod

2018-06-28 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Dany,

1.1Mixing Transceiver and Panadapter Commands
A single macro sequence of Programmer’s Commands can control both the
transceiver and its panadapter. That is, K3S/K3 and P3 commands, or KX3 and
PX3 commands, can be in the same macro.
Mixing both K3S/K3 and P3 or KX3 and PX3 commands can only be used in P3/SVGA
or PX3 macros. P3 and PX3 commands cannot be used in K3S/K3 or KX3 macros.

All should remember that the KPOD does NOT store or generate macro commands.
What it does is activate macros that are stored in the K3(s).

Cheers,
Fred

Have you actually read the KPA-500 Owner's Manual?

Use the "K3 Enhanced cabling" diagram on page 22 but substitute a
cable made according to the instructions in "Icom Cable Connections"
(page 18) instead of the DB15HD/DB15HD cable used with the K3.

As an alternative, you can allow the KPA-500 to band switch based
on detected RF and use the "Basic Cabling" diagram on page 20. In
that case you will want to use two RCA connections - one between
the "SEND" jack on the IC-7300 and PA Key on the KPA-500, the other
between ALC Out on the KPA-500 and ALC jack on the IC-7300.

Regardless of which (basic or enhanced) cabling you use, be sure to
connect ALC and set the KPA-500 ALC output level as documented on page
10 to prevent the Icom transceiver from over driving the KPA-500 if
the Icom "Power" level is set too high.

Everything you need is in the KPA-500 Owner's Manual if you simply
study it.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

Hi Robert,

I'm thinking you could greatly expand your potential market by having two
speakers and supporting stereo audio. That way people could use the KX3 dual
watch feature without having to plug in headphones. It might also be
attractive for K3 users (like me) suffering from a space problem. I use the
West Mountain speakers and love them but would like something smaller.

Just a thought.

Good luck.

Subject: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

I've built a prototype powered external speaker for the KX3, and would
like some feedback on what folks would desire in terms of features, and
whether folks would want to own one.

The speaker currently is designed to match the overall look of the KX3
and PX3, and accept similar third-party panels and covers as for the KX
line. Presently, it uses the same legs and feet as the KX3 and PX3, and
is the same height and depth as those. There is one USB port for
charging the internal lithium battery, and input and output stereo
jacks. The speaker is mono. The output jack redirects the right channel
from the stereo input for a second speaker, just like with the Elecraft
SP3 and other similar external speakers. The speaker is amplified.

The SPX3 puts out a maximum of 3W, and is about as loud as any external
radio speaker gets. Volume is adjusted by the KX3. It plugs into the KX3
PHONES jack. There is a built-in low pass filter to reduce noise and
improve the listening experience.

The prototype, as you'll see in pictures in the links below, is slightly
narrower than the expected finished product. The speaker driver and
on/off switch are both waterproof, but - just like the KX3 and PX3 - the
case isn't. So, don't drop it in a lake. It will handle all conditions
appropriate for the KX3, and is meant for indoor and outdoor use. Having
matched the case design so closely to the KX3, it isn't as airtight as
I'd like it, so the next prototype will have the case halves join in a
more customary way, but remain the same dimensions and overall look.
This will also improve ingress protection.

You'll see the speaker is not a polished finished product yet, as it's a
rough first prototype made by hand. Your feedback will assure the final
product is what you want gracing your portable shack.

Please note, the KX3 in the photo is only to demonstrate the speaker.

All feedback is welcome. Please let me know which reasonable
enhancements or simplifications you'd like to see.
Examples:
* Would you want an output USB port to use the speaker to charge your
phone?
* Would you want to dispense with the built-in battery, and run it
entirely from external power?
* Would you want a second passive speaker driven by the first to save on
weight and cost? That is, a SPX3A (active, with battery, charger, and
amp) and SPX3P (passive, with only speaker driver)
* If you're a KX2 user, would you like me to produce the SPX2 (also in
development)?

"K3S and P3" as is advertised on the Elecraft site under part number E740243.
When I click on that part number, there is no Cady book titled as such.
I have also looked on the Lulu.com site and don't see that specific title. I do
see "The Elecraft K3 and P3" 3rd Edition.
I have "The Elecraft K3" 2nd Edition and was thinking of an updated book for
the K3S including revision firmware updates.
Is the "The Elecraft K3 and P3" 3rd Edition such a book?

Thank you and 73,

Hi John,

I operate mostly 6 & 2 meters. On 6m, I have a third preamp between the K3S
and the amp. When operating EME, I have to disable Preamp 2 because 3 preamps
create too much noise. So, I have disabled Preamp 2. This has allowed me to
work EME successfully.

I wanted to try an experiment, disabling Preamp 1 and enabling Preamp 2 while
using my 3rd preamp. From what I understand, enabling Preamp 2 disables Preamp
1. But, I don’t know this for sure.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

Thanks & 73,

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Advice needed: Remote Station Enhancement

I believe that logic can quickly merge into the idea that "the first to
introduce BCD Band Data" will "set the standard". I for one do not
believe that is the best approach, and certainly not sufficient to 'set
a standard', which may have serious flaws when extended beyond that
manufacturer's realm.

The Yaesu method (I cannot call it a standard) will inter-operate with
other Yaesu gear and 3rd party gear designed to inter-operate with it,
but that does not constitute a "standard"

The "standard" for data communication has been established in the
digital world for many, many years, and pre-dates the Yaesu system.

Drivers do not source voltage (they use open collector and open drain
devices), and there is one pullup resistor at the end of the signal line
- there may be multiple receivers monitoring the signal line, but there
can be only one driver active at a time - which for a multiple driver
situation means an external source of control is necessary for gating
the drivers.
I was working with those "rules" when designing computer console
circuits for a IBM large system back in 1969, and the same principals
had been devised since the advent of IBM SLT logic modules in the late
1950s.

So if anyone wants to apply "the first guy sets the standard", I think
Yaesu was not the first, but they made the mistake of having the drivers
source voltage. That is only practical for very short signal lines and
a very limited number of receivers listening on the signal line(s).

Efforts to continue the "Yaesu method" will result in further confusion
as amateur box to box communications develops further and more and more
incorporates design principles previously applied to computer systems
and communications lines. Even the IBM terminal communications plugged
the "pullup" resistors at only one terminal (they were called line
terminators) - at the end of the communications line. That is a long
established principle that works even today if done right. What I am
saying is that Yaesu did not "do it right" and creates limitations to
expansion and the advancement of technology within the amateur community
today.

So get out the cutters and remove the collector and drain resistors from
the Yaesu drivers, and put pullup resistors only at the far end of the
lines, and you can have the Yaesu "system" without any of the problems.

There are other systems that do allow multiple drivers on the same
signalling line(s) - I2C is one example - whichever driver grabs the
signalling first gets priority is a simplified version of the operation.
Ethernet is another example, but in any of these systems, the protocol
must define which driver gets priority. That requires a bit more
sophistication than a simple driver on the communication line.

I believe the original K3 "did it right" to use open drain drivers on
the band data lines - but succumbed to the hue and cry that it did not
work with the various versions of the Yaesu system and Elecraft then
added pullup resistors to the drivers.
The result has been a bastardized "system" that in many cases requires
the addition of steering diodes and/or the removal of pullup resistors
from external devices to make it work right.

Re: [Elecraft] KXSER CABLE INFO

2018-02-06 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Noel,

No, you don't have to tie those together unless the software you are using
needs them for some sort of flow control handshaking, but that too, would be
unusual because back in the days of modem RTS (Request to Send) and CTS (clear
to send) were used by the modem to let the terminal (your computer) know it was
ok for it to send data. DTR (Data Terminal Ready) was a handshaking signal
from the data terminal (computer) to let the modem know it was OK to send data
to the terminal. Handshaking flow control is not used these days and so that is
why RTS and DTR are often used by logger programs for CW and PTT. The K3
allows this because its serial port implements them. The KX3 can't because its
serial port is only for data (TxD and RxD).

(An exception that I seem to remember is that some Kenwood radios needed RTS
and CTS jumpered on the radio side.)

Cheers,

Re: [Elecraft] Long wire antennas MORE

2018-01-12 Thread Cady, Fred
I wintered over at Byrd Station in 67-68. The "Long Wire" VLF station was, as
I remember, about 11 miles away from the main Byrd station to get away from
noise sources for the research that was being done. Several of us at Byrd
walked out there one day (although I guess it was night, seeing as how nights
were 4 months long). I'm pretty sure the 10 mile antenna was for receiving but
KC4AAD might have used it for transmitting. My own station, KC4USM, used a
700' long vee beam, on the ice. "Ground" was something like 7000' below, 2000'
below sea level.

Just for kicks, I modeled it with a 1/4 wave counter poise up 12' up
from ground. 14 MHz.

Unfortunately where ground is a question. What the parameters for
"ground" is a good question. Snow doesn't look like earth.

Anyhow the impedance came out 11470 ohms +j 17880.
The horizontal antenna pattern was along the axis with a beam width of
3.8 degrees and a gain of almost 15 db

The vertical pattern peaked at 3 degrees and straight up 5 dB down.

To the list, others may have set up this way:

In my memory channels, the 5 60 meter channels are set up for channel
hopping, with VFO A being the center of the channel and CW, and VFO B
being the lower edge of the channel [carrier position], and USB.
Selecting a channel then lets me switch between CW and USB with the A/B
switch.

Changing the VFO A steps through the 5 channels. However, it does not
seem to take VFO B with it. VFO B remains on the first channel selected.

I set the memories up with the K3 Freq Memory editor. Am I doing
something wrong, or is this how it works. If the latter ... any chance
it could be set to take VFO B along with a rotation of VFO A?

switching back to the frequency. I have been using 0 PWR and the decode to
practice CW however since VFO B switches back it makes it difficult to see
what I have typed unless I am actively looking at it.

Additionally I thought it might be interesting to allow for VFO B knob

Thank you and I hope to hear if there are any solutions to keep the VFO B

Re: [Elecraft] K3 suffers from amnesia

2017-12-04 Thread Cady, Fred
The K3s does this to avoid the extraneous keying due to activity on the USB
serial port while the computer is booting up. You can put the K3s into
USB.SAFE mode like this:
"Safe" mode disables PTT or keying transmissions until the K3S receives a
command via the USB interface, such as a read of the rig's VFO frequency. To
turn on safe mode, go into CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap 1 to select USB.SAFE. Exit
the menu and turn the radio off/on. Applications that use PTT-KEY but don't
send commands will require UNSAFE mode (the default). In this case, be sure to
turn the PC on before the K3S.

Phil,

If you have not done so already, crank up K3 Utility and do the Transmit
Gain calibration.
If that does not fix the problem, then contact Elecraft support.

Unfortunately, that coupon code is only good for print books. Many of
Fred's books are e-book only. Good for Fred! Technical manuals are great as
e-books because they are searchable and "weightless." But the discount
doesn't appear to apply.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Decode question

2017-11-26 Thread Cady, Fred
You must have the KX3 decoding to display text on the PX3. The PX3 doesn't
decode. What you shouldn't do is try to display on the PX3 and the KX3 Utility
at the same time.

Note: To display CW, RTTY or PSK decoded signals on the PX3, you must activate
text decoding on the KX3.

Make sure that you do not have the KX3 Utility Terminal program active to
display and send text while you are trying to use the PX3 keyboard, or vice
verse. The KX3’s text decode can be fed to only one place. You will see
dropped characters if the utility is active when using the keyboard. They both
cannot be used at the same time.

Re: [Elecraft] Diversity / aux RX problem

2017-11-24 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Tony,

As Don indicates, you have two choices for what antenna input the sub rx is
connected to when you built it.

"The Sub receiver's antenna can be connected to the ATU or to the auxiliary RF
input.

When you install your Sub receiver you must chose an antenna configuration and
then physically connect a TMP cable inside the K3S from the Sub receiver's J92
antenna input to one of two places. First, you can connect the receiver to the
K3S ATU, which allows the Sub receiver to share the same antenna the Main
receiver is using (ANT 1, ANT 2, or RX ANT IN). You may also choose to have
the Sub receiver use whichever antenna the Main receiver is NOT using (ANT 2 if
Main is using ANT 1, or vice versa). You must set CONFIG:KRX3 Ant=Atu for this
option. This may be your best choice for all around operating with a variety
of antennas.

The second choice is to connect the receiver to a separate auxiliary RF BNC
antenna connector. In this case, the Sub receiver can share an antenna with
the Main or it can use a different antenna connected to the AUX RF BNC. Set
CONFIG:KRX3 Ant=bnc if you choose this option. This may be your best choice
for diversity receiver operation with specialized receive antennas.
A factory assembled K3S with KRX3 Sub receiver is delivered with its antenna
connected to the AUX RF BNC (CONFIG:KRX3 Ant=bnc). Changing to KRX3 Ant=Atu
will require you to open the K3S case and move a TMP cable from the BNC to the
ATU. Refer to your KRX3 assembly manual for detailed instructions."

With your antennas both being potential transmit antennas, I would recommend
the first option.

Cheers,

Fred KE7X

Tony,

Where is your subRX antenna AUX input connected? To the BNC jack below
the 2 SO-239s or to the non-transmit antenna?

Once you know that, use BSET to changel the subRX input to AUX

If you do not know which antenna connector is connected to the SubRX AUX
input, you can find out physically by removing the top cover and
following the TMP cable. If it is connected to the KAT3 then it is the
non-transmit antenna, but if connected to the BNC jack, then that is the
jack that is connected.
You might be able to determine it without removing the top cover - just
set the subRX to use the AUX input and plug the antenna into each jack
one at a time. When you hear band noise or signals, that is the one
connected.

Hi:

I'm the one that recently reported problems with the KPA500. I've replaced
all RF cables including the one out to the BALUN and the BALUN itself. I
know which bands are less than 10:1 in bypass and locked out bands that
exceed that SWR. Something in the amp just refuses to switch from straight
through (standby) to amplified (operate) and the radio sees infinite SWR
with the KPA500 in operate mode. Elecraft had me check one resistor that
might cause the problem and said further troubleshooting would have to be
at their facility. While I'm trying to dig up some schematics to help out
I'm getting the feeling it will be on its way back to E for service
shortly.

In the meantime, I got comment about how I run my KAT500: "KAT500 - We
normally leave the KAT in the MAN position, not AUTO. With varying SWR, the
KAT will tune while in transmit when in the AUTO position."

I'm not quite sure what that to make of that. I have my KAT500 in the AUTO
position thinking it's a good thing that the KAT will tune if something
happens... which it never does. But in AUTO, at least the tuner will retune
if I jump to a frequency that is not in memory.

In MAN mode, I have to initiate tuning myself. Why would I not want to let
the auto-tuner auto tune?

Subject: [Elecraft] Looking for some programming help with switch emulation
coding

Hello,

I am trying to get the following commands to work using N1MM function keys.

What I want to do is using the SWT or SWH codes is to press and hold the rec
button on the radio which will switch memory bank to two, push the M1 button
to play the recorded voice, and then switch the memory bank back to one.

This is the code I have so far.

F5 Prec,{cat1asc swh37;}{cat1asc swt21;}{cat{cat1asc swh37;}

What I had found though was that N!MM spits out the code too fast and the K3
does not have enough time to finishing processing the first cat1asc
command. Clearly I will need a delay between each of the three "cat1asc"
codes so that the K3 will process each cat command and then be ready to
accept the next command.

So the question is; does the K3 have a method to introduce delay that I can
use on the N1MM function key string of commands so that the K3 can process
each command or does N1MM have a way to process each separate cat command in
a function key using a delay command of N1MM making?

So if there is a solution, it may lie with either N1MM, Elecraft or both so
I am posting to both lists.

Best regards,

Jerry Knowlton, W1IE

I am wondering if is possibile connect TOGHETER in some way and have all

- KAT500
- Computer connection for CAT control

without re-work the connections for firmware upgrade, ecc.

Re: [Elecraft] Minicircuits splitter for diversity?

2017-11-06 Thread Cady, Fred
Jim may be wanting to use a RX antenna (to use as an RX antenna connected to
the RX ANT input) at times plus wanting to use it at other times for diversity
connected to the AUX RF BNC input.

I can't tell you anything about that splitter, though.

Jim,

I don't understand how that will help with diversity.
You need two antennas that are oriented differently - usually one for
horizontal polarization and the other for vertical polarization.

One is connected to the subRX AUX antenna connection and the other
connects to the main RX. If the one connected to the
main is not your transmit antenna, connect it to the RX IN antenna
connection.

Re: [Elecraft] "See" CW WPM on P3/SVGA?

2017-10-22 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Bret,

You can turn on CW decoding in the K3S and see the decoded CW and the CW speed
in the VFO B display area.

Hold TEXT DEC and tune VFO B to WPM CHK. You can also choose TX ONLY to check
your sending, CW 5-40 and CW 30-90.

Tune VFO A to adjust the decoding threshold. thr AUTO is a good place to start.

CW decoding works best when you are tuned to the zero beat frequency.

Turn CWT on by tapping CWT and then tap SPOT to automatically slide you in on
the correct freqquency.

Now turn the big knob to a CW signal you see on the P3.

Cheers,

Re: [Elecraft] More macro storage

2017-10-20 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Peter,

You can sequence macros so that one PF button does two different functions but
the two different functions still require two macro positions. The trick is at
the end of each macro you reprogram the function key to point to the other
macro. The means you have to use a PF key on the K3 because you cannot change
what macro the KPod keys activate. Tapping KPod button 3 always activates
Macro 11 and you cannot change it to activate Macro 3. And the toggling macros
have to be in positions 1 - 8 because those are the only ones the PF keys can
activate. To use a KPod key to activate the toggle, you could use up a third
macro slot that activates the PF key chosen and then put it into one of the
macro slots the KPod can activate.

That’s what I was afraid of. Well, I have one more idea. I have Macro 11 (tap
kpod button 3) and Macro 3 (button 3 hold) to toggle between 5w (hold) and 100W
(tap). I understand there’s a way to program a macro to switch between two
groups of functions. I could repurpose the tap to toggling the RF output power
and toggling the hold on that button to cycle through my new macro, on and off.
I just don’t know how to actually do that!

Hi Peter,

The KPod doesn't actually store any macros. It basically gives you 16
programmable function keys in addition to the 10 available on the front panel
of the K3s. The only macros it can activate are the 16 that you can store in
the K3s using the K3 Utility.

One way to add more is to use the SVGA option of the P3. That will give you up
to 50 messages/macros but they must be activated from a USB keyboard plugged
into the P3 (not the P3's RS232 port, though).

If you don't like the idea of another keyboard, check out NK7Z addition of a
Genovation keypad (www.nk7z.net<http://www.nk7z.net>).
www.QRPWorks.com<http://www.QRPWorks.com> has its SideKar that can store
messages/macros externally but it needs to use the serial port.

Hi all,
I have a bit of a dilemma when it comes to macros and my K3s. I own a kPod
that's fully loaded with 16 always-used functions. I just developed two more
that I will use on a very regular basis, but I have no way to command them
into the radio now. The RS-232 port on the P3 is needed to connect to a
MicroHam MicroKeyer-II full-time, so the only time I can connect the K3s/P3
to the computer directly is when I remove the CAT connection from the serial
port.

My understanding is that Transceiver macro memories mirror kPod commands,
and if that's the case, I'm not sure what I can do to fire off these two
macros (one does a series of actions, the other undoes them). These macros
are for listening to the pileup on VFO-A while locking the DX on VFO-B, and
switching the L-Mix-R values for this format (then back again with the
un-set macro). Any ideas?

Looking for suggestion about books or kits or whatever else that might interest
a ten year old to electronics and to amateur radio. He is adept at mechanical
things and pretty bright. What else could he be? He’s my grandson.

But his understanding of electronics is well insulated by contemporary smart
phones and games and the like, about the innards of which one can learn nothing

having to learn how to put it back together.

Any other grandpas or grandmas out there have experiences to share?

Hi,

You can set VOX MD to off so you are in PTT mode to transmit or you can just

The other neat thing you can do is Hold TEXT to enter the text decode dialog.
Then select TX ONLY to be able to have the K2 check the characters.

Wow, that was a quick answer. The good news is that it eliminates the problem
of "my own voice in my headphones" when operating SSB. The bad news is that it
also eliminates CW sidetone. I am going to try it at "T=1" and see if I can

My (recent vintage K3S) rig seems to put my voice on Line Out regardless of
the front panel Monitor setting. I see in the manual a reference to
Config:Lin Out=PHONES but, the best I can tell, my rig has no such setting
in Lin Out (all I have are numeric settings). Its probably not the answer,

me there might be something important I have not learned.

Why do I care?
I do headphone switching in software--multiple radio audio channels and mic
audio are routed to a software mixer which reads those, and writes multiple
channels to headphones and to a long term WAV file recording. I would prefer
to use the USB Windows Recording device as the "received audio" input to
this mixer. But, for now, I am using an analog cable from the "Speaker" jack
on the K3S back panel to a sound card because that is the only way I have
found to turn off the "monitor" function. That is, when I use the
all-digital path, I hear my own voice in my headphones and my brain just
won't deal with that gracefully.

Subject: [Elecraft] Up-to-date KX3 menu printout

Could anyone please direct me to an up-to-date menu listing for my KX3 that
I could print?
I have seen several and looked at the KE7X books but none seem to be
up-to-date as of
MCU version 2.76.

I hate looking all over for corrections to the old menu versions available
on the net.

For that matter is the Elecraft KX3 Owners Manual menu chapter up-to-date?

Thanks for any help!!

While training to go to Byrd Station in 67/68 we were cautioned to not tear

all the instruments flat lined and tore into them and missed one of the most
significant events.

Just a few minutes ago at 0925z there was a massive solar flare.
The burst of X-rays totally turned off the HF bands. It sounds like my
antenna fell down!

Propagation will gradually return during the day, but a sudden event
like this is exciting.

"Region 2673 just produced a major X2.2 solar flare at approximately
09:10 UTC (Sept 6). This is the first X-Class event to be detected since
May 2015. The active region is still in a decent position for Earth
directed eruptions. More updates will be provided should a coronal mass
ejection (CME) be associated. More to follow. Image courtesy of SDO/AIA."

The WIN4K3 rig control software provides control of the P3 as well as the
K3. With a VGA capture card feeding the VGA image to the computer over a
USB 3.0 connection, the P3 is replicated in a resizeable window on the
computer. It adds the ability to point & click on the screen or use the
mouse roll wheel to tune the K3 frequency.. With it, I almost never look
at or touch the P3 itself and am thinking about moving the P3 off the
operating desk.

A good friend of mine for who English is not his first language is wanting to

have a section in it on doing full break-in with the K3S.

Please can someone on the list let me know what interconnections/cables are
required between the two transceivers to do this and whether there are any menu
selections that need to be made, so I can pass this information onto him.

Thank you!

Fred,

Can't find 5.58 anywhere. After 5.57 comes 5.60 on the ELECRAFT
webpage. 5.6 doesn't access preamps on 15,17M here.

I know there was a pre-release version that had these bands but there
evidently were some small remaining problems to be fixed.

Installed 5.60 on my upgraded K3 (which has PREAMP2 on 10/6M working).
Preamp2 does not show up on 17, 15. It still does on 12-6M.

You might try using MN255; to exit the menus instead of SWT09;

Subject: [Elecraft] Macro Question

I have two macros. One to turn off MICBIAS and MIC BTN. The second to turn
MICBIAS back on and set MIC BTN to Ptt UP.dn.

The first one works fine:
MN135;MP000;MN082;MP000;SWT09;
MN135 sets MICBIAS off and MN082 sets MIC BTN off. SWT09 exits the menu

When I go to set them back I use:
MN135;MP016;MN082;MP004;SWT09;
MN135, bit 4 sets MICBIAS back on. MN082, bit 2 sets Ptt UP.dn. SWT09 exits
menu.

When I go to use the mic, it does not work. When I look at the menu items they
are set correctly. To get the mic to work, I have to toggle MIC BTN manually.
Once I do that everything is fine.

Anyone have any idea if I’m doing something wrong or I am missing something
(probably something simple).

Thanks,

[Elecraft] KE7X Elecraft books -- more info

2017-05-06 Thread Cady, Fred
Forgot to put this in the previous post.

Elecraft doesn't take stock to conventions but they will have demonstration
copies on view.

Also, before ordering anything from Lulu, check if there is a current discount
code available. The best site I've found for these is
https://www.retailmenot.com/view/lulu.com

[Elecraft] KE7X Elecraft Books

2017-05-06 Thread Cady, Fred
Thanks to all who commented on the Macro Programming book. I thought I'd post
a little road map on where the various volumes can be found.

There are two places the Elecraft books can be found. Elecraft stocks the
spiral bound, hard copies of the K3S, KX-Line, the KPA500 and KA500 book, the
KX3 Portable book, and the KX2 books.
“The Elecraft KX2 – Ultra-Portable, Handheld HF Rig”
“The Elecraft KX2 Companion’s Guide – The KXPA100 and KAT100”
“The Elecraft K3s and P3 – Getting the Most out from Your High Performance
Station”.

"The Portable Elecraft KX3 – Going for the Summit with the KX3 and KX3-2M/4M"

“The Elecraft KX-Line – The Complete Station”

“The Elecraft KPA500 and KAT500 – the K-Line Dream Station, 2nd. Ed.”

These are all listed on the Elecraft order page.

PDF versions of these, and hard copy and PDF versions of the following are
available through www.lulu.com.

"The Elecraft K3 and P3, 3rd Edition – Incorporating the KXV3B and KIO3B"
 “The Elecraft KXPA100, PX3 and 2M/4M Transverters – Assembling the KX-Line
Station”
“The Elecraft P3, SVGA, and TX Monitor”
“Upgrading the Elecraft K3 with K3s Components – Bridging the Gap”

and

“Elecraft Macro Programming – K3S, K3, KX3 and P3/SVGA, PX3 and KPod”

Please go to www.ke7x.com for a complete road map and
links for ordering.

Re: [Elecraft] KPOD toggle macros?

2017-05-02 Thread Cady, Fred
A work around is to make the two macros as you do now (chaining one to the
other), assign them to two macro positions in the K3 and then assign them to
one of the programmable function keys (like you do now). Then, assign another
of the K3 macros to tap or hold the function key (I know, there goes another
macro position) and then use the KPOD associated with that macro to activate
it. So you have to use 3 K3 macros instead of 2.

Again, the term KPOD macro is a misnomer. There aren't any macros in the KPOD,
just the ability to use the KPOD switches to execute the K3 macros associated
with that switch.

Fred KE7X

I'm finally back to working with my KPOD and some macros.

Has anyone figured out how to do a toggle similar to what can be done on the K3
front panel?

I have a toggle on the K3 for doing my split up1 sequence and a second
activation turns it all off.

I'm looking to toggle DIGOUT1 which will switch between my vertical and an
inverted V.

A second one will be used to drive an aux out on the KPOD which will toggle my
RX array direction.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem Setting CW Offset to Zero

2017-04-21 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi John,

I don't know where you are seeing 50 KHz. The change in VFO when changing from
CW to SSB should be what you have set in you CW tone.

Try these two exercises.

Exercise

Examine what happens when switching between CW and SSB with CW WGHT VFO set to
NOR and when set to OFS.

  * Select CW mode and tune VFO A to some even CW frequency, such as
14.050.000.
  * Enter the CW WGHT menu and tap the key to select VFO NOR.
  * Exit the menu and switch between SSB and CW modes. With VFO NOR, VFO A
remains constant.
  * Change to VFO OFS and repeat the experiment. With VFO OFS activated, the
display shows 14.050.000 minus your CW pitch

Exercise

What happens if two stations are using SSB and decide to switch to CW with CW
WGHT VFO OFS NOR and activated.

With VFO OFS NOR, each station will have to re-tune the other to hear the CW
tone. With VFO OFS activated, neither station will have to re-tune. Each
station’s VFO will be automatically offset by the pitch amount.

If you sometimes operate mixed mode, with you switching to CW and the other
station on SSB, it is best to enable VFO OFS so the other station doesn't have
to retune you when you switch from SSB to CW.

Reading KE7X's manual, I should be able to set the offset to zero by
selecting CW WGHT from the CONFIG menu and then tapping the 5 button to
select VFO nor. But, this procedure leaves the offset at around 50 KHz. Am
I interpreting Fred's instructions incorrectly?

Re: [Elecraft] kx3 px3

2017-04-01 Thread Cady, Fred
Have a look at the How to Set Up and Interpret the PX3 Display in the PX3
manual where this is explained (Or the Why??? section in the KE7X KX-Line
book). Basically the PX3 and KX3 are different bandwidth detectors so the
signal levels displayed generally won't be the same. They are two different
instruments meant to show two different things. The KX3 s-meter shows you the
signal level you have to work with in the KX3 with its bandwidth and signal
processing active and the PX3 is far more useful to show the relative signals
across the band.

I have the pre-amp set to 20db, with a precision HP signal generator a

All cables are secure, and are the supplied cables between the kx3, and px3

Scale and Reference do not effect the delta between the readings..

surely there must be an adjustment I am missing in the PX3

That works but you first have to reset it so you know where you are starting

The issue with many ups and downs, is that some of them get ignoredyou need
delays. This may not be an issue in the k3s and kx3 but is with the k3. A delay
in the app would be great.

The transfer characteristic is pretty linear from an input signal of nearly
-120 dBm to about -45 dBm with AGC off. Signals above that are being clipped
by some other non-linear process, probably the hardware AGC.I don't
remember if I had the AF LIM on when I took these data.

Re: [Elecraft] Slope Macro Settings

2017-02-23 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi Dan,

You can go into the AGC SLP menu and then do a sequence of UP; and DN; commands
to arrive at your final value. The strategy for these types of macros is to
drive the parameter to one end, e.g. 15 UP; commands set SLP=15 and then 5 DN;
changes it back to 10, if that's the value you want.
