After looking at the interface between the controller and the servo amp
I realize that what we call the servo amp isn't its just the power
transistors and the current sens circuit the rest of the servo is in
the axis control board of the controller so this is a whole different
project.

Peter, I could make a board with the drivers and an ADC but how much of
a project would it be to program the FPGA to do the servo control? I've
done some PLD programming but have never written Verilog or VHDL.

I definitely wish!!

I'v been searching for the manuals for a while, how do I get them? Even
the Johnford manual seems to be for a slightly different model.

I'm going to try to scope the signals on the amps, I'll let you know
what I find.

Dave,
we have a server domain www.kontent.de which hosts our accounts, look it
up. I don't know where the firm is situated, supposedly here in Germany.
I still have a ISDN telephone line although the German Telekom tends to
abolish them all, but can't everywhere because of bad and long telephone
lines (ours is more than 7 km) with high signal suppression. Now, German
Telekom is gradually digging better cables so we expect to get fast DSL
by next year. I don't know how things will be developing then. Anyway,
since nobody knows our domain we receive almost no spam nor spoof.

Peter

Who hosts your domain? Here in the US most DSL providers no longer
allow a SMTP server on their networks so although I can setup a Pop mail
server
to receive mail, I can't send mail without using a SMTP server external
to my actual hardware server. This was done supposedly to minimize
spam coming from their network, but I think it has been ineffective
other than to inhibit legitimate users of their services.

Now any hardware recommendations? I like the Masa cards, I was
thinking a 4i65/8/9, a 7i33 and two 7i37TAs or instead of the 4i65 a
7i80.

There are still some mysteries to solve; what's the exact pin-out of
the servo amps? and how is the spindle controller connected? In
digging through the wiring I notice it dosn't match the documentation I
have.

Heres what I know

The pinouts are available in Fanuc manuals, The older drives use Honda
connectors, the newer use .050 pitch high density connectors but have similar
interfaces until they get to FSSB interfaced drives

The older drives are analog +-10V velocity mode (up to -6057 I beleive )

Your (-6058) drive is digital (three phase PWM in and 2 channels of +- ~5V
analog motor current sense for 2 phases out) PWM frequency is low as the
output devices are bipolar transistors (Either 4 or 8 KHz)

I had considered making a specific daughtercard with the correct connectors
and local velocity feedback but never really had the time.
I can dig up the pinout if you wish

Luverly, just luverly. In that event, before I disconnected anything, I
would, if they can be exercised at all, and verify with a o-scope what
every wire actually did. Or see if anyone else may have more accurate
docs.

Sorry Gregg, in a bad mood, my back is killing me after 6 hours at the local
radio station last night, trying to keep a 60+ yo transmitter on the air. Even
chinese parts are becoming hard to find.

I did find them on fleabay but had to word the search carefully, bought 4 of
the 5 he had. For the US version of the K-360/$10 a copy. Boat must be a junk,
running under sail power from the looks of the estimated delivery date of 1
June. :)

Gentlemen,
I wonder why everybody makes a fuss of mail providers or the like.
Together with a friend, we made up our own domain many years ago, and we
never had any problem mailing and sending anything with attachments of
unlimited size to and from there. We host about 15 mail accounts, all
friends and relatives. This costs us about 20 Euros per year. In
addition, we have more than 2 GB web space per acount. Anyone can do that.

Why? They don't get stripped when I post them as I'll demo below. Yet
another advantage of using yahoo? Irritating thier customers sure seems
to be a good way to enhance their failing business.

OTOH I use email like it was designed for, with ALL the editing etc done
right here on this machine my the TDE version of kmail and submitted to
the net thru eith my ISP's mail server, or in this case thru the tv
stations mail server where I have a lifetime account at mail.wdtv.com.

I also have an automatic account frm my ISP, shentel.net, so I have at
least two paths to the big pipe.

So the commercial folks like yahoo, hotmail, aol or gmail, never have a
chance to make html out of my text and then screw it up by stripping the
html. So what you see IS what I typo'd or miss-spelled from this
keyboard. :)

For instance:
is where you would go to get
the call sign of the nearest airport's weather machine so that gkrellm,
if you have the weather plugin installed, can give you a weather report
that is not more than 15 minutes old. I can get it at shorter intervals
but why abuse that server?

Webmail, from any vendor is so crippled by vendor lockin that if what I
post disappears for any reason except the servers msg size limit, it
would be the last post I'd ever make thru that service. And it is not
open for discussion. I can and have, posted 250+ kilobytes worth of

Stripping an 150 byte html address from an email is unforgivable. Thats

I buy the K360, which does not even have the touch pad, however I am used
to the nuisance of a mouse. The K360, like the k400 (IIRC) is that it
has square keypads with no &^,mutter(*# taper to the sides of the

super fancy $30 keyboard whose key sides are tapered, allowing swarf to

There are hot keys to do almost everything, and I should get practiced up

Dig into the control panel on the mill. It may be an RS232 device. That's what
I found on the panel on the Anilam Crusader M system which was on my mill made
in 1990. I had plans to connect the panel to a serial port and fit an LCD in
place of the CRT in the original control box, but someone wanted to give me
money for the panel... Now I have a nice 800x600 LCD touch screen with Linux
drivers for the digitizer. That will fit in the old control box, with room
beneath for an e-stop button and other things.

Are your drives velocity input +-10vdv input?

You will need a pointing device to start LinuxCNC AFAIK unless you have
it start up when you boot the machine. Dunno what the PC will do without
a pointing device now a days. Axis has the most AFAIK keyboard shortcuts
of all the GUI's.

The system will boot directly into LinuxCNC, there will not be anything
else loaded on the machine.  I want to give the guys on the shop floor
the same user interface they are accustomed to, a keyboard and some F
keys along the bottom of the screen.

Thanks.

As do I, but need to remember how to adjust the jog speed from the
keyboard when the keyboard is being kept warm by the y motor its
balanced on top of while setting it up to do the next job.

Yes.
But, be prepared for a Project. This will involve you learning a lot about your
machine and a lot about machine control fundamentals.
Just take this as fair warning. There are folk in (for example) the Mach3
forums who will insist that you will be making parts inside a week. They are
hopelessly optimistic and I have watched novice retrofitters lose heart
because of that. Reckon on 1 month to get the machine moving and another month
to get it dialed in enough to make money. Less if you are a Linux geek with a
Control Systems PhD. More if you have never used Linux before.

You will need help, accept that. Just ask.

Then again this thread says "it should work with a normal +/- dc i/p

one parameter which will automatically configure the drive for your

According to this thread your servo amp uses PWM for control.
https://www.machsupport.com/forum/index.php?topic=17464.0

So yes it can work with Linuxcnc.

I'll let more experienced people weigh in on your servo question, but I
wouldn't hesitate to convert such a machine, maybe with a little tech
support here, or directly from the manufacturer of the interface
electronics.

I never use a mouse with LinuxCNC. I buy a $25 Logitech K400 wireless
keyboard. The keyboard is slightly smaller than a standard keyboard,
which is fine. You won't be writing a novel on your CNC machine. The
keyboard has a touch pad in lieu of the mouse, which I use occasionally,
but almost never while using LinuxCNC. All you really need are the
keyboard hot keys for most CNC operations. The K400 keyboard serves as
a large wireless pendant, allowing me to get close to the machine so I
can see well, or use a feeler gage when touching off during a setup, and
I can use the keyboard without looking to jog each axis where it needs
to go.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DKZTMG

There are silicone keyboard covers that do a good job of keeping shop
grunge out of the keyboard, but the keyboards are so inexpensive that
they could be considered disposable.
