RE: AV! a full time job?
I disagree with this, Specially y if you have a Development team. We used to have a separate Development domain, (infact 2 or 3 of them) We may be setting up and removing domain servers in regular basis, for various RD and Development related work. What one Can do is to physically move those computers out of the main network, But then people might have communication problems. I don't have much Of experience in how to manage such installations, but We some how managed with a little bit of extra discipline from the Developers side. RE: AV! a full time job?
Kumindra, I respectfully disagree. Martin is correct on this one. The LAST thing you want is people on the dev team moving boxes back and forth between a dev network and a prod network. That is definitely a recipe for disaster. In a large environment, the dev people rarely, if ever, are responsible for supporting anything in the production environment. You want one group that is responsible for this type of work, and a change management system that requires approvals before machines are put on the prod network. Doing it any other way in a large environment is an exercise in masochism. Even with a CM process in place, you are bound to get screwed from time to time, but it does minimize the occurrences. I can't even imagine the nightmare you would have if there were three test networks and everyone had free reign to move boxes from those test networks to the prod network. You might as well say you have four test networks. You would rarely have a clue what broke or who did it. The only thing you could be sure of in the environment you describe is everything being screwed up and anyone with a brain shopping their resume. Moving mailboxes
Good afternoon, Exchange 5.5 sp4 and Outlook 98. When moving mailboxes from one container to another is it true that a person's profile has to be refreshed by doing a check name after keying in the mailbox name? I have been testing this and find that it is true. We have 1638 mailboxes to move from one container to another. We are doing the following: back up the mailbox to a PST, delete the mailbox, add the mailbox to the correct container, restore the mailbox from the PST. Then when trying to sign in we get unable to open default folders. I thought it might be a timing (synching problem) so I wanted 20 hours and still get the same error. Please let me know if you know of an easier way to move these mailboxes. (I know Kevin Snook company has mailbox mover but that is one at a time also and we really haven't got that to work either.) Happy holidays. RE: Moving mailboxes
What are you hoping to gain by doing this? There is no real benefit to moving mailboxes between containers. In addition, by doing what you propose, you loose SIS and break all of your meeting connections. What is your business reason for moving between containers (or having multiple containers at all for that matter)? RE: Moving mailboxes
Mike, Exmerge is a resource kit utility. You might really want to take a look at the FAQ, review some information in the archives from this list, and read the disaster recovery whitepaper. Multiple containers should have no affect on DR'ing your server. You really ought to do so reading before you start butchering a functional server. Have you tried doing a DR on a test box yet? You say you cannot successfully complete the task, but you're not giving us enough information to help you. What are you doing for backups (what backup program, what settings, etc.), what is your restore proceedure, at what point in the proceedure is the restore failing, and what errors are you getting? You do have a couple boxes that you can test your DR proceedures with, right? OT: New year, no contract
Hi folks... Off topic for the list, but what the hell, it's christmas. Since ORB UK is now closed pending the creation of Horus, that means I'm out of contract now. I'm 30, been using MS since before they bought DOS, and I'm a Microsoft Partner in my own right. I have experience in Windows from 3.1 to ME, OS/2 and NT from 2.1 to XP, DOS'en from 3.3 to 7.1, and Linux. I also use BeOS, MacOS X, FreeBSD and SVR4. My current 'learning experience' is QNX. I have experience of Sendmail, QMail, Exim, Exchange 5 and 5.5, and Mailtraq, and have used SPTM, POP3, APOP, ETRN and ODMR. I've been doing telephone and deskside support for the better end of 4 years, and was part of the support team during the launch of Telewest SurfUnlimited. I've used and supported ISDN, ADSL, and Cable Modems, as well as Leased Line, Routed Solutions and Plain Old dial-up. Sad though I am, I can identify a modem model and a RAS by ear. With Lucent Portmasters, I can even tell the ComOs release by listening to it. RE: New year, no contract
Well here's a thought genius - try using a jobsearch site, like, oh I don't know, how about www.jobsearch.co.uk? Rather than spamming this list with your pathetic little almost-resume? Particularly as this list knows what a jerk you made of yourself with ORB UK. Complete arrogance and ineptitude in your behaviour regarding UCE, and yet here you are now spamming several thousand computer professionals. Alternatively, please practice Would you like fries with that?, as that is probably the best place for you to end up. [1] Gary [1] And for added giggle value folks, the listed rate of 35 thousand euros, well that's around 21 thousand pounds sterling, or 31 thousand US dollars. Yeah, I've been called that before, but not by anyone whose opinion I particularly care about [1]. I just happen to have a fairly low tolerance for idiots on what was once (and occasionally still is) the best list for peer-level Exchange discussions [2] [3]. There are folks on this list that can comment on my approach, etc., and if they do, I'll listen. You're not one of them. Of course, if you'd like to discuss your insults in person anytime, you'll find me at MEC 2002, wherever it happens to be. Finally, following on from the above, you are who? In 4300 messages, going back to mid-November [4] I see three posts from you - your grammatically correct, if inelegant, post below, and two copies of the same question, timed within one minute of each other, A relatively basic question at that. You get to flame me when you've contributed some more. [5] Gary [1] There is no... [2] I believe Mr. Tuip's list has that distinction now. [3] Rather than a technical support center for the lazy, incompetent or ignorant. [4] I don't think restoring my list archives would provide any additional information, so I haven't done so. [5] You'll need to go back a couple of years to determine whether or not I contribute; I watch now, as I build datacenters rather than exchange servers. [6] [6] Dagnabbit! Well here's a thought genius - try using a jobsearch site, like, oh I don't know, how about www.jobsearch.co.uk? Rather than spamming this list with your pathetic little almost-resume? Well, surprisingly, I like dealing direct, and not fattening the wallets of those pimps known as Recruitment Agencies. RE: Moving mailboxes
Exchange 5.5 sp4 and Outlook 98. When moving mailboxes from one container to another There is no way to move mailboxes between containers. is it true that a person's profile has to be refreshed by doing a check name after keying in the mailbox name? When a new mailbox is created it has to be resolved, yes. It does not need to be resolved by the user though, one could write a script or use a 3rd party tool to update the profile. There are plenty of other issues beyond this simple one which are much trickier to solve though. I have been testing this and find that it is true. We have 1638 mailboxes to move from one container to another. Por que? We are doing the following: back up the mailbox to a PST, delete the mailbox, add the mailbox to the correct container, restore the mailbox from the PST. Then when trying to sign in we get unable to open default folders. I thought it might be a timing (synching problem) so I wanted 20 hours and still get the same error. Sounds right, it is trying to access a mailbox which no longer exists. It is trying to access the mailbox based on it's unique ID. Please let me know if you know of an easier way to move these mailboxes. (I know Kevin Snook company has mailbox mover but that is one at a time also and we really haven't got that to work either.) The easiest way is not to move them. I've found few, if any compelling reasons to move them in the past. _ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Archives: http://www.swynk.com/sitesearch/search.asp To unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: Moving mailboxes
If I were you, I would not do it. If you have have to do it, there's more than just not being able to resolve Outlook profiles. If you don't add X500 addresses to new mailboxes, you will have problem replying, all permissions will be screwed up, etc. Not to mention about Palm users if you have any. Anyway, if you have to do it, you can implement software to create profiles automatically when people login after you've moved mailboxes... http://www.autoprof.com Or http://www.imanami.com/default.htm -- Cheaper than Autoprof I believe. The reason you can not complete DR is because you are not reading the White Paper properly. When you have build the DR server, you have to recreate containers with same DN name and run DS/IS consistency check to show mailboxes in correct containers. Try it. If this is all you're tryting to accomplish, you should't have to move mailboxes to a one container. Well, surprisingly, I like dealing direct, and not fattening the wallets of those pimps known as Recruitment Agencies. Misguided and arrogant, as the service actually costs you nothing. You fail to explain how you feel entitled to spam this list, particularly in light of your recent activities. and £22,000 sterling (your math is as bad as your manners) is about right for what I do. My manners are generally pretty good - as with respect, the application of them is earnt rather than granted as a right. My math is also just fine, thanks. Per the below: Source: http://www.oanda.com Sunday, December 30, 2001 35,000 Euro = 21,374.5 British Pound Median price = 0.61040 / 0.61070 (bid/ask) Following convention/custom, as the amount other than the thousands is less than 500, I rounded down. Euros, rather than GBP. The symbol probably won't have come through properly on all systems. Currently, 1 Euro = 0.61070 British Pound or 0.88580 US Dollar. The chosen hourly rate is laughable - even in the current economy, if I was interviewing someone and they pitched themselves that low, I'd laugh them out of the building. RE: New year, no contract
Is it so bad to reach out and see if anyone can help someone get a job? In general, possibly not; with this particular person, however, yes, I think it IS so bad. Given his previous arrogance, pomposity and ignorance in his operation of a service that allegedly helped to fight UCE, it's somewhat ironic that he now resorts to advertising himself on a list that is not designed for that purpose. We might all need such help one day. Yes, but we probably don't have such hangups about using search sites, or have our own network of contacts that might be able to help us. We would not, in most cases (I believe), pimp ourselves so laughably on a technical discussion list. E2K and Outlook 2001 (for Mac)
I have a couple of interesting questions regarding E2K and Mac clients. 1. When I configure a Mac client for auto-response on meeting invitations, the backend does not process the invitations unless the user's Mac client is logged on to the mailbox. I've tried using delegates but this did not fully resolved the issue since some meeting invitations either doesn't get into the delegated account's mailbox, or it goes into the delegates mailbox but it doesn't get processed. Is there any other possible workaround? 2. Has anybody tried modifying the OWA to include searches other than the Global Address List (to include personal Contacts, Contacts in Public Folders, etc.)? I have been redirected to CDOLIVE. Is there any simpler implemenation. I am running a mix environment - PC and Mac clients. Best regards, Dino G.
