[FairfieldLife] How the deluded see the world....

2013-08-21 Thread salyavin808
Delusional People See the World Through Their Mind's Eye

A mechanism for how the brain creates and maintains delusions is
revealed in a new study.

Having delusions, such as a belief in telekinesis, can influence how
people see the world - literally.

Human beliefs
are shaped by perception, but the new research suggests
delusions — unfounded but tightly held beliefs — can turn the
tables and actually shape perception. People who are prone to forming
delusions may not correctly distinguish among different sensory inputs,
and may rely on these delusions to help make sense of the world, the
study finds. Typical delusions include paranoid ideas or inflated ideas
about oneself.

"Beliefs form in order to minimize our surprise about the world," said
neuroscientist Phil Corlett of Yale University in New Haven, Conn., who
was not involved in the study. "Our expectations override what we
actually see," Corlett added.

The prevailing thinking holds that people develop delusions
to predict how events in their lives will occur — just as
Pavlov's dog learned to predict that the sound of a bell ringing meant
dinnertime was imminent. Humans update their beliefs when what they
predict doesn't match what they actually experience, Corlett said.

But delusions often appear to override the evidence of the senses. To
test this idea, German and Swedish researchers conducted behavioral and
neuroimaging experiments on healthy people who harbor delusions.

In one experiment, volunteers were given a questionnaire designed to
measure delusional beliefs. Questions included: Do you ever feel as if
people are
reading your mind?; Do you ever feel as if there is a conspiracy against
you
?; Do you ever feel as if you are, or destined to be someone very
important?; and Are you often worried that your partner may be
unfaithful?

The participants then performed a task that tested their visual
perception: They were shown a sphere-shaped set of dots rotating in an
ambiguous direction, and asked to report which direction it was rotating
at various intervals.

People who harbored a greater number of delusional beliefs (those who
scored higher on the questionnaire) saw the dots appear to change
direction more often than the average person. The result confirms
findings from previous studies that delusional individuals have less
stable perceptions of the world.

In a second experiment, the volunteers were given glasses, which they
were told would bias their view so that the rotating dots would appear
to go in one direction
  more
often than the other direction — a delusion, because these were
actually ordinary glasses. The volunteers performed a similar
dot-watching task, with a learning phase and a test phase. During the
learning phase, the dots clearly rotated in one direction, but during
the test phase, the direction was ambiguous.

While wearing the glasses, the volunteers reported seeing the dots
rotate in the biased direction, even during the test phase. They clung
to the delusion that the glasses altered their vision, even though the
visual evidence contradicted this idea, suggesting they used their
delusional beliefs to interpret what they were seeing.

A third experiment was similar to the second, but brain scans were taken
using functional magnetic resonance imaging. The scans showed that when
people were deluded about the direction of the dots' rotation, their
brains were encoding the delusion as if they had really seen the dots
move that way. In other words, people weren't just ignoring what they
saw; they were really seeing something else.

Furthermore, the brain scans revealed connections between a brain area
involved in beliefs, the orbitofrontal cortex, and an area involved in
visual processing, the visual cortex. (Both became active during the
delusional observations.)

Corlett finds the results exciting. The study "gives us a nice
explanation for the relation between belief and perception and how it
might go awry," he said.

But he cautioned that drawing inferences about people who are clinically
delusional, such as those with schizophrenia
, may be premature. Time will tell whether the same
brain mechanisms are at play for these patients, he said.

Lunar activity causing pressure to the fluid bodies, so your "Smarty Pants,"
may well be Farty Pants with steamers. There, your missing crack joke. :)
Farty Pant Steamers with cracks and toe jams. Tea?

Yes, good points, all - the 60's, the apogee of plastics, in a sense, and
atomic powered flying cars - Groovy! And I just had to Google, "Scandinavian
director making depressing films in the 60's", to remember his name, Ingmar
Bergman - After watching one of those, it was like, OK, goodnight all, I think
I'll be going into my room, to hang myself now.

So in context, yes, LSD most definitely came along at the right time
(like-everything-always-does).

Isn't it ironic that LSD was synthesised in a Swiss pharmaceutical

A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then so we no longer

Yeah, that was a neat one - and it really pissed off the French!
The reason was that in the 19th century the British Navy ruled the
oceans and so the Admiralty produced the best charts to navigate by
using Greenwich as the zero marker. As everyone else wanted the most
accurate data Greenwich Mean Time was adopted by other nation's ships
long before it was officially recognised by treaty.

Yes, they open the third eye. In fact, wasn't out benefactor Rick Archer
first turned on by LSD? For sure, for many people psychedelics were
never more than party drugs - pearls before swine, I say. I claim that
anyone of intelligence or sensitivity who takes a dose of Albert
Hoffman's potion will have an enlightening experience - of course it
might be a trip to hell, but heaven and hell are both part of God's
economy. The trouble is, talk about LSD has been hijacked by talk about
the rock gods and hippies of the sixties; it's much more rewarding
reading about the first-hand accounts of serious seekers like John
Blofeld, Alan Watts, Ernst Junger, Aldous Huxley, Arthur Koestler . . .
the list goes on and on. You'll notice that the people I've just
mentioned were all in middle age and successful before they took the
drug. The crash came when teens and immature kids started dishing the
stuff out like candy. Incredibly irresponsible and casualties were
inevitable.
And yes, you're right that it's better not to have to rely on drugs. But
it was the psychedelic sixties that opened the door for Maharishi to
introduce TM so let's give credit where credit's due.

The girl in the Donovan clip is of course Sue Lyon who was his
girlfriend. Donovan spiked her drink with LSD at a party and she had a
classic bummer. Totally irresponsible thing for Donovan to have done.

Sure, psychedelics open the third eye, like throwing a stick of dynamite at it.
Very harsh, and unpredictable - never really enjoyed LSD hangovers much,
either, to say the least. Personally, I prefer to come by it naturally. That
way, whatever is noticed, is sustained and integrated.

I don't see a lot reflected in our popular entertainment, particularly movies,
that stokes our mass interest in a nuclear bombing. If you watch popular
artistic expression, it often points to a likely future. Something about the
intuition of the right brain, as expressed artistically. And it doesn't look
like the mass subconsciousness is interested in any nuclear explosions, for the
time being.

I met this woman, M. T. Silva,, "Atomic Mom," at a film festival I
think 2 years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wezh9saXgo0

Wonderful human she is. What she compiled is significant as a lot
mentioned in her film I had not ever heard about
and is quite frightening.
This was not in the film version I saw at the screening but is
interesting too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upc0HGKxevc

I am pretty sure she got this documentary on some of the PBS channels
last year.

[FairfieldLife] A terrible beauty is born

2013-08-21 Thread Seraphita
The Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963 was approved because of concerns
about radioactive fallout as a result of nuclear weapons testing in the
atmosphere. I remember reading someone - I forget who - who suggested
that every ten years or so the representatives of the world's nations at
the UN should all be taken to witness for themselves an air-burst
nuclear explosion. The idea was that the experience would be so scary
that it would concentrate minds on the necessity of limiting the spread
of nuclear weapons. I always thought he had a point. Yes, it's true that
an H-bomb exploded above ground would cause enough of an increase in
background radiation that a handful of people across the world would
develop cancer and die who otherwise wouldn't have, but you have to set
that against the inevitability that one day a rogue state or terrorist
group will explode an atom bomb in a city somewhere causing untold
suffering. And there are plenty of experts who argue that such an
eventuality really is a near certainty.
Because these explosions always had a "terrible beauty" (Yeats's phrase)
about them I always envied those who were able to witness the American
test explosions in the Pacific. If those experts are right perhaps one
day I'll get to witness such a blast too close for comfort.

Do you think those psychedelic drugs really open the third eye?
I am not sure if I buy that claim.
I do know, if one goes off the beaten track (the track society has
formed you to) and take some days
or months to clear your head from repetitive social trainings and
expectations, one can achieve a higher awareness and start to
find solutions to one's own problems, and no drugs or alcohol are
needed.

Lot's of kids taking the prescribed medicines, you are right. Every kid
I know
who has taken those prescribed such as you mention above, either have
attempted suicide
after taking or are a bit out of it.
I am lucky my young adult offspring has made it without falling into
those drug traps.
When your twenty something year old says, "I am going out to get a keg,"
well what does
that usually mean?
In our case, an empty shell of a keg was brought home, ( within 30
minutes of purchasing the empty keg)
and is using it to fill with water as a lifting weight and working out
with it. About 170 pounds of weight.
No lack of creativity around here. LOL.

be very dangerous and he'd said, "Oh well, in that case, I'll turn back"
would we still be celebrating the guy? I'll wager taking LSD is far more
enlightening than taking the Adderall and Ritalin that your teens are
all prescribed for ADHD (which they all claim to have - do me a fucking
favour!). See Bill Maher's rant on this topic:

Of course he did - and wrote some cracking songs as a result. See:

[FairfieldLife] Re: Ah, the *real* reason for the "15-day waiting period"

2013-08-21 Thread Seraphita
Some years back I was travelling across the US by plane and forgot that
your country is so damned big it has different time zones. I nearly
missed my flight to New Orleans but realised at the last moment my
mistake and rushed to the departure gate. The attendant told me sorry,
but I'd have to take a later flight. Fortunately, after a phone call, I
was allowed onto the waiting plane - cue lots of very dirty looks from
the rest of the irritated waiting passengers on board. What amazed me
even then was that they would have let the plane take off without me but
with my luggage which, of course, could have contained a bomb. That
would have been a no-no on a European flight.
Bet they've sharpened up their act since then.

So it's all about collusion (smile). Sorry about the embalming crack, I thought
everyone knew which FFL contributor employs the on-line voice of an undertaker;
don’t get me wrong, I like some of Xeno's contributions; for example, I wish he
had contributed more about engrams; but he easily slides
into pomposity, at which point Ravi enjoys making him look like the energizer
bunny after he just got hit by lightening.

Bob Price D, how you do stumble into brilliance, pointing out one of the most
fun aspects of studying literature: different interpretations of the same
piece! You with your vain and deluded king, me with my trembling in their boots
subjects who consequently are willing to collude with their sovereign in his
vanity and delusion. Does the child's utterance not sweep all characters up in
one innocent observation?
PS I promise you on our sacred literary partnership that I have never sold any
fluids, embalming or otherwise.

In English, "I think" and "you may have" are not expressions
of certainty, as in "really believe."

Well, I'll share with you what gave me the idea:

"Judy, your post was brilliant, and I never had a doubt that
your intellect is among the sharpest here."--zarzari, #298524

"Judy, already there was so much praise about this post of
yours, and I agree with that! that I hardly dare to answer
you."--zarzari, #298541

"Just imagine, you got a new lover, with whom you are deeply in
romantic love, and after three years you notice, that he is
utterly stupid, and you can't even talk to him, because he
wouldn't even understand. What a shame for somebody with your
brilliant intellect."--zarzari, #298541

"This is a very clear and beautiful explanation here Judy."
--zarzari, #299795

That last quote is from right before your exchange with
Barry about Robin's mental health. IOW, up until I became
angry with you over that, you were practically sucking my
toes.

I thought all that extreme flattery was pretty amusing at
the time. And when I came across it again as I was looking
for something else relevant to this current discussion, it
was a huge LOL. Back then I hadn't connected it with your
attacks on Robin, but it sure does fit, given what you've
told me this time around about the ways you've gone after
him--including in the Great Misattribution Upset--because
I got angry with you over a year and a half ago.

I knew you'd deny it, and I'm sure you'll find a way to
somehow dismiss the evidence. But you did say all that.
And after I told you off in email, you've done nothing
but find reasons to attack me. So everyone reading this
can make up their own minds as to your motivations.

Pardon the interruption to these lovely posts to ask a technical
question directed to anyone reading:
I am noticing posts being posted more than once on the FFL Message Board
(signed in and out) and in my email box too, messages are being sent
more than once. I do believe there is a glitch somewhere, at first I
thought Mr. Price was
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=ass-call
  giving us a
little, as he was giving Mrs. Price a little, but (butt, ass-call,
heh) I think some of you more tech savvy geeks may know what is
happening as to why these posts are cloning?
Anyone have an answer or if is it yahoo jerking off again?

So it's all about collusion (smile). Sorry about the embalming crack, I thought
everyone knew which FFL contributor employs the on-line voice of an undertaker;
don’t get me wrong, I like some of Xeno's contributions; for example, I wish he
had contributed more about engrams; but he easily slides
into pomposity, at which point Ravi enjoys making him look like the energizer
bunny after he just got hit by lightening.

I have no idea why I went this way with this subject.

Anyways, I am sure, the Cowsills were not pro Cocaine, with "Cocaine

what I mean, wink, wink.

Good wholesome family stuff. :)

[FairfieldLife] Re: Pfc. Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years

2013-08-21 Thread authfriend
Heh heh. It happens, we all do it now and then, no
problem. Thanks for following up.

The only way what you said would have made any sense
is if you were out for Manning's blood, and that
clearly ain't you, babe, so I figured something had
gone awry somewhere.

Know what you mean about small choice in rotten apples
(good phrase; is that yours?). The whole Manning story
has been so depressing that this was actually a
pleasant surprise, because it could have been so much
worse.

I do have the sense that there was such a scandale about
his horrendously inhumane treatment that they may not
try that again. (God only knows how he'll fare at the
hands of the other inmates, but maybe he'll get adequate
protection.)

And I was surprised to learn he'll be eligible for
parole after eight or so years. Of course they can deny
him that just out of spite, but again if he behaves
himself and doesn't give them any reason to deny parole,
that'll also create a big fuss. He has a *constituency*
of sorts now.

I mean, who knows? But I think there's a good chance
he'll be relatively OK, or at least not too much worse
than when he goes in. I kept reading that he would
likely be imprisoned for the rest of his life, and my
heart just sank. So, modified rapture at this news.

Please ignore Bob dear, clearly Mrs. Price is mad at him and not letting him
conduct any "bone-a-babe" clinical experiments and he is expressing his

He will eventually wise up to your and Xeno's awesomeness.

The Cowsills would have been so awesome and wholesome. Geez. Oh wait,

This article better have their facts straight. I know there are a lot of

I know people who bragged they did them and they were/are fucked up now

I wonder if Donovan did any of these regularly?

Bob Price D, how you do stumble into brilliance, pointing out one of the most
fun aspects of studying literature: different interpretations of the same
piece! You with your vain and deluded king, me with my trembling in their boots
subjects who consequently are willing to collude with their sovereign in his
vanity and delusion. Does the child's utterance not sweep all characters up in
one innocent observation?
PS I promise you on our sacred literary partnership that I have never sold any

Thanks for that clarification Rick. I understand your constraints, if at all I
was disappointed that my respect for you as someone who enables and supports
free speech faltered as you handed over the moderator ship to an Amma fanatic.
Anyway sanity's restored, Jim's back as the onwer/moderator - as usual people
accuse of me of bullying, verbal abuse, dominating but he is able to see and
appreciate the larger context of mine - thank god.

I didn’t have time to do justice to it. I wasn’t reading the posts and couldn’t
fairly make the value judgments required.

Well dear Rory - this is a post from Ammachi free speech zone Yahoo group -
Amma's deluded, deceived devotees are keeping me busy for the last week and I'm
having a lot of fun.

Currently the archives are not public, because it so happened Amma's devotees
indulged in personal attacks - character attacks, and the owner/moderator Jim
was absent for that entire duration (last July/Aug to June this year). I was
also banned after the interim moderator Rick handed over the moderatorship to
some pro-Amma fanatic (don't ask me why).

I didn’t want to do it any more.

Hi dear SHare - as Judy says, it's irrelevant, I was not talking about physical

resign as pontiff of the Catholic Church. As we have speculated earlier this

Actually nobody "flies into a rage" over Andrew. Interestingly,
though, it's Barry who mentions him most often here.

Since Robin gave up on this place on April 8, Advanced
Search shows 93 posts from Barry that mention him. (This
is subject to the same caveats as those for Barry's
search for posts mentioning himself, of course, but these
are posts from a single person, not the entire forum; and
we all know Barry does mention Robin quite frequently.)

It's interesting to read this bearing in mind how
attached Barry is to "defeating" his own "enemies."
The majority of his posts here are devoted to it
(including this one). But he doesn't seem to
realize that in this regard, he's no different
than anyone else here. Except that he does it *at
least* as much as anybody else.

A few comments interspersed below...

[FairfieldLife] Pfc. Bradley Manning sentenced to 35 years

2013-08-21 Thread authfriend
The prosecution had asked for *60 years*. He'll have 3 years
knocked off the 35 for time in custody and for mistreatment
he received during his pretrial confinement.

He'll be eligible for parole in a little over 8 years.

Everything I've been reading suggested he'd be in prison for
the rest of his life, so this seems to me to be very good news
under the circumstances.

Sure you were: "This [questioning Robin's mental health]

I think you may have actually been *jealous* of my
admiration of Robin. You thought I should be admiring
*you*. Remember all your "love-bombing"? So you
figured you needed to tear him down to "correct" my
opinion of him.

Mind-reading, iranitea.

I understand perfectly what you are trying to convey. It's
just that I don't believe you.

Furthermore, that's not the only instance in which you've
let your anti-Robin behavior be dictated by something
I've said. You've acknowledged you made that ridiculous
fuss over the misattributions because of what I had said
to you back in December 2011; and you posted that long
quote from something Robin had written 30-some years ago
awhile back because you didn't like something complimentary
I had said about him.

That's just *insane*, iranitea.

Uh, no. Does it seem particularly learned or scholarly
to you? Seems like basic common sense to me.

You did not. Barry pronounced his "NPD/hypomania" diagnosis,
and you replied:

"Of course. He is smart enough, he makes everyone either
follower (or admirer) or opponent. (black and white, ask
Curtis) In reality he is a poor and old guy, who's
illusions were shattered. I don't really find any mystery
about him, I rather find the fascination mysterious, he
has for some people, intelligent people at that."

("Of course" indicates agreement in English.)

Just extraordinarily ugly and deliberately hurtful. And
clearly aimed at me as well.

Now, earlier in that same post, Barry said Robin was a
"classic case of NPD/hypmania [sic] augmented by
moodmaking and a desire to become the focus of other
people's attention."

And you responded:

"Barry, I am with you on this. Not to the exact type of
diagnosis, I am not a psychiatrist. I would call it a borderline
personality, these people can be very intelligent. I don't like
it to be blunt like this, especially, since the person is here
on the board. it is also not meant to be a put-down, these
persons can't help it. That is why I said, there is no use
discussing with someone, who will be unable to change his mind,
no matter how smart he argues.

"From the very first reading of RWC I got this impression, and
expressed it to somebody here. Whatever I read, hear about the
whole case confirms my opinion. According to occam's razor, it
is more likely he had a mental disturbance, which is known to
have similar symptoms than enlightened states, than a fall
from a real enlightened state. There are too many congruences,
like all this demon/false devas stuff that permeates his whole
history. It's all throughout, pre- and post supposed unity. All
the channeling stuff, like obviously 1945, it's really all
rather typical for some schizophrenic disorder. That's my
opinion. I cannot know everything, and if I am wrong, who cares?"

It wouldn't have mattered who you were talking about,
those two paragraphs were *inexcusable*.

But "Not to the exact type of diagnosis" was the *closest
you came* to not subscribing to everything Barry said. (In
fact, you went well beyond it.) Barry's "diagnosis" was not
just NPD; it was hypomania and moodmaking and attention
seeking. Who knew what part(s) of that you were
disagreeing with, or to what degree? Highly ambiguous.

Then you went on to *confirm* Barry's NPD/hypomania
diagnosis with "Of course." You never said, "No, I don't
think it was NPD." It wouldn't have mattered even if you
had; the rest of what you wrote made it crystal clear
you thought (or wanted readers to think) that Robin was
seriously mentally unbalanced.

In my worldview Emily, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual exist on the
same continuum of life. Under the influence of the previous paradigm, both
physical and psychological doctors isolated aspects of being human, to the
detriment, IMO, of all concerned. I think we're fortunate to be living in an
era when those separative analyses are being questioned and more holistic
approaches are being sought and studied fervently.

Ravi, I realize you weren't talking about physical vulnerability. But why not?
After all, you get quite upset when Xeno gets abstract! Of course, some folks
also got upset when Xeno got not so abstract. Go figure!

Hi dear SHare - as Judy says, it's irrelevant, I was not talking about physical
vulnerability. Plus you are Saint Share - you are the queen of vulnerability,
always accountable, responsible to your actions, your emotions - the epitome of
my dream woman - accountability, responsibility and self-honesty are thy
attributes.

L, the focus on neuroscience brings to mind something which I think of as one
of Maharishi's wisest utterances. He said: save the psychology. It's a funny
but sweet paradox to me that neuroscience can lead to more compassion not less.
By focusing on physical and practical solutions to mental problems, the
psychology is saved from mucking about in labels and theories that are neither
proven nor helpful. IMHO!

He doesn't appear to mention TM at all

And why would people be unable to do TM because of face blindness or any of the
other issues mentioned?

Dementia to the point that they can't remember instructions would prevent
someone from learning/practicing TM, and no doubt specific brain injuries can
cause problems that TM teachers don't know how to workaround, but that's
different than generic "brain damage" preventing you from learning TM.

Jason, thanks so much for great article by Dr. Ramachandran, a man who seems to
be bridging the chasm between the philosophers and the scientists. I find his
communication style very accessible and in amazon there are reviews that
indicate this gift carries over into the book. Here's an old TED talk of his:

Maharishi failed to tell you that if the brain has serious
hardware problems, TM is practically useless.  Other schools

[FairfieldLife] Re: Religious delusional beliefs & the myth of the invincible, infallible Goddess

2013-08-21 Thread obbajeeba

Having to deal with a "Mutiny on the Bounty," once, and wow, that was not easy
having to listen to a plan of a stupid man and his real suggestions of aim to a
team. The man not realizing my position of stand and of authority to the
particular project, I almost had an ass whooping by an overly macho guy as I
prepared to kick his ass, the team reserved their stance by standing or sitting
quietly. We must have looked like we were doing a square dance in the middle of
the room. I was shaking from the adrenalin rush.
It was almost a scene from Fight Club. It didn't end up that way. I pulled back
and used his mule meat till the project was over. Sounds like a power trip?
Not on my end. I was protecting the whole project and the client and succeeded
until it ended. The man thought I was enemy to the person who organized the
event, which was further from the truth. He based his findings on gossip. One
thing about gossip, it bears no facts.
