Odd that you would use Clinton's words to justify Bush's war...Also, these types of arguments lead nowhere if we assume as you and others do, that the only alternative to Bush are the Democrats. The alternative is an honest, peaceful and ethical approach, while still accomplishing the aims of influence and prosperity for the US. It can be done. It is just that the Republicans see the solution as dictatorship, and the Democrats have been paid off by Bush, who has never vetoed a spending bill, and are rendered close to worthless and impotent now. It doesn't negate a solution though. Awfully ironic that Mr. I'm a uniter, not a divider is a uniter of the majority of the country now against him. Central Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Actually, Reaganomics was such a failure that Bush Senior had to raise taxes in order to offset some of the damage. Taxes will again have to be raised to cope with the disaster that G. W. Bush's policies have led to. Wrong Feste, Reagan tax cuts more than doubled income to the treasury as the economy grew. What grew even faster was federal spending. Reagan insisted on increased military spending to make up for Carters slashes and also to bankrupt the Soviets. Congress increased spending on their pet projects to get reelected. Together, their spending out grew the increased revenue caused by tax cuts.Bush never had to increase taxes, he did it out of a spirit of compromise with the democratic leadership, something a wise leader should never seek. If you recall, Bush agreed with Tip O'neal, I believe, that for ever dollar raised in taxes, the congress would cut their spending by either the same amount or even double. Bush broke his vow of no new taxes, costing him reelection, signed the new tax bill and Congress never followed through on their promise to cut the spending. The new taxes sent the country into a minor recession which it started coming out of months before the election. Government revenue before Reagan's tax cut was about 500 billion a year, before taxes were raised again it had grown to about a trillion dollars a year. Tax cuts have caused the economy to grow every time it has been used. The key is to keep congress from increasing the rate of their spending on their pet projects. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but every now and then I hear in the news where government revenues for a quarter were bigger than were anticipated and caused the deficit to be less than expected. Historical tables can be found here http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/fy2005/hist.html Tax receipts declined in 2001, declined again in 2002, declined again in 2003, stabilized in 2004 and have grown in 2005. They would have declined anyway in 2001 due to stock bubble bursting, but hard to say real effect of bush tax cuts, growth has been real slow and economy grows on its own just with growth of pop. Receipts under Reagan did grow from about 500 billion to about 1 trillion, but expenditures grew even more than receipts. Of course you'll get a growing economy under those situations. Plus oil prices dropped dramatically and Volcker got interest rates down. All of this contributed to the growth. Economy is complicated, it grew under reagan tax cuts, bush1 tax increase and clinton tax increase. The debt was under 1 trillion when Reagan came in, now over 7 trillion. It's one thing to fiscally stimulate the economy with 1 trillion in debt and another now with 7 trillion. We have to be more responsible in how its done now. I'm not against tax cuts, rates were too high when Reagan came in. Also, social security rates have not come down and alternative minimum tax is hitting more people. Have rates really come down much for avg person? The key for me is fair rate reduction for everyone combined with fiscal discipline in spending. Yahoo! Sparaig it's not that important to me to do the necessary googling. What specifically would you accept as proof? The tax cuts are permanently successful. They never lead to a declining revenue once they take effect because the economy expands and creates more tax payers which always make up thedifference plus. Now it's also possible thatthe government can out grow the tax cuts, but that is done by spending at a faster rate than tax revenues are coming in. That is why when presidents cut taxes to stimulate growth they plead with their congresses to hold increased spending to the same rate of inflation to allow the growth of the economy to proceed at a faster pace than the growth of the government spending. This prevents deficit spending. However , some times deficit spending can be necessary and over time the deficits can be grown out of as the economy expands and the tax base broadens to include more tax payers. Also, over what time-period were these previous tax cuts sucessful? _The Secret JFK Tax Cuts_ (http://209.157.64.200/focus/f-news/911868/posts) This might answer some of your questions Apparently, it's fine for a Democratic President to push for tax cuts that will spur economic growth, but not for a Republican like Ronald Reagan, and now George W. Bush. To say that JFK's tax cut was any different is a blatant lie. In a way, Kennedy's tax cut could have benefited the rich even more. Any tax cut from rates as high as over 90% will have a much larger impact than a tax cut on tax rates from 20 through 50%. Bush only plans to reduce the top income tax rate from 39.6 to 33%. Kennedy cut taxes for the rich by one-third. Bush's income tax cut is only a one-sixth reduction. Additionally, Bush's tax cut would return less than 7 cents on each dollar earned, whereas Kennedy's tax cut returned 26 cents on each dollar. These are facts conveniently left out by Ted Kennedy and other Democrats - that Kennedy too drastically cut taxes for the rich, and that Reagan's tax cuts were across-the- board and caused tax revenue to increase. The evil Republicans' tax cuts even propose an end to the marriage penalty tax and the tax on Social Security benefits! So, Bush's tax cut of about 10% on the highest wage earners has had the same impact as Kennedy's tax-cut of 30%? I agree that 94% is too high a tax rate. When Reagan took office government revenues were around 500 billion a year , give or take about 50 billion. Before taxes were raised again the economy had expanded and revenues increased to about 1 trillion during the Reagan administration. After his tax cuts, the country went into recession. And don't forget that Reagan instituted the largst tax increase in American History (social securty issues). And he compiled more debt than all the previous presidents combined. Now under Bush there has been steady growth in the economy month by month, pulled out of the Clinton recession, and again government revenues have grown. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me but every now and then I hear in the news where government revenues for a quarter were bigger than were anticipated and caused the deficit to be less than expected. Steady growth? What reality are you living in? Steady job losses for over 4 years. Only modern president to have a net job losses in a term. Clionton recession? More GOP fantasy. Longest sustained economic growth in U.S. History (despite the blow job). Yes, record tax increases (surpassing Reagan), but - take a look at ALL the dire predictions from the right wing about that. The WSJ predicting economic doom and disaster. None of which came to pass. Bush inherited a slowing economy for sure... but not one that met the traditional definition of recession. Deficits less than expected? Are you kidding me? Before he took office, there were NO deficits projected or expected. Surpluses were in the forecast. Nothing but red ink now. So much for the Balanced Budget Amendment. And it's just not the so-called war on terror. Bush's non-defense spending has increased about 7% per year, vs. 2% for Clinton. Bush has changed America's course from tax-and-spend to borrow-and-spend. But what is NOT too high a tax rate? 10%? 20%? Etc? I'd say the top federal income tax rate should be 15%. But remember: on top of the income tax there is the FICA (or payroll) tax, which is 15.3% if you're self-employed and 1/2 of that if you are employed (your employer picks up the other half). This 15.3% is paid for the first approximately $80,000 of adjusted gross income. Does the term point of diminishing returns mean anything to you? Yahoo! The reality of his campaign is to gain support to create more ways to allow illegal aliens to gain temporary legal status and remain in the U.S. More immigrants means lower labor costs and higher profits for businesses. Just like another GOP policy, ever-decreasing taxes, the W administration has as a core value the expansion of labor forces to lower business costs and increase profits. Rank and file W supporters are in a state of suspension, trying to reconcile the discordant messages they are hearing. On the one hand W actually wants more illegals in the country, although his sound bites call for being tough on illegals. The GOP also wants more illegals, but on a local basis the GOP is encouraging the arrest of illegals, prevention of illegal day-laborer gathering sites, etc. The rank and file GOP and W TBs are confused, but they don't want to admit that the policies are at odds with each other, so while they are mentally busy trying to sort the discordant messages so that the two discordant policies make sense somehow, they are silent. [FairfieldLife] Re: Where is Mr. M.DIXON?
Here are excerpts from an upcoming New Yorker article. Wouldn't you sooner have an atheist in charge than this religious nut? UP IN THE AIR Where is the Iraq war headed next? by SEYMOUR M. HERSH Issue of 2005-12-05 A key element of the drawdown plans, not mentioned in the President's public statements, is that the departing American troops will be replaced by American airpower. Quick, deadly strikes by U.S. warplanes are seen as a way to improve dramatically the combat capability of even the weakest Iraqi combat units. The danger, military experts have told me, is that, while the number of American casualties would decrease as ground troops are withdrawn, the over-all level of violence and the number of Iraqi fatalities would increase unless there are stringent controls over who bombs what. *** Bush's closest advisers have long been aware of the religious nature of his policy commitments. In recent interviews, one former senior official, who served in Bush's first term, spoke extensively about the connection between the President's religious faith and his view of the war in Iraq. After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the former official said, he was told that Bush felt that God put me here to deal with the war on terror. The President's belief was fortified by the Republican sweep in the 2002 congressional elections; Bush saw the victory as a purposeful message from God that he's the man, the former official said. Publicly, Bush depicted his reëlection as a referendum on the war; privately, he spoke of it as another manifestation of divine purpose. The former senior official said that after the election he made a lengthy inspection visit to Iraq and reported his findings to Bush in the White House: I said to the President, `We're not winning the war.' And he asked, `Are we losing?' I said, `Not yet.' The President, he said, appeared displeased with that answer. *** The President is more determined than ever to stay the course, the former defense official said. He doesn't feel any pain. Bush is a believer in the adage `People may suffer and die, but the Church advances.' He said that the President had become more detached, leaving more issues to Karl Rove and Vice-President Cheney. They keep him in the gray world of religious idealism, where he wants to be anyway, the former defense official said. Bush's public appearances, for example, are generally scheduled in front of friendly audiences, most often at military bases. Four decades ago, President Lyndon Johnson, who was also confronted with an increasingly unpopular war, was limited to similar public forums. Johnson knew he was a prisoner in the White House, the former official said, but Bush has no idea. *** The Air Force's worries have been subordinated, so far, to the political needs of the White House. The Administration's immediate political goal after the December elections is to show that the day-to-day conduct of the war can be turned over to the newly trained and equipped Iraqi military. It has already planned heavily scripted change-of-command ceremonies, complete with the lowering of American flags at bases and the raising of Iraqi ones. more... http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/articles/051205fa... --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, mainstream20016 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, off_world_beings [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: When Bush needs him? No, the point is this, when Bush became President and put his policies in effect, the Democrats resisted them so aggressively predicting doom and gloom at every turn, that if thepolicies succeeded, it made the Democrats look stupid and Bush smart and if they failed and caused problems the Democrats could gloat and say "we told you so". Which makes one wonder where are the loyalties of the democrats, with the good of their country or with the good of their party. Right now, the Democrats and various other leftist have spent so much political capital demonizing the President over his policy in Iraq that they can't afford for it to work and Iraq to become a democracy capable of standing on its own two feet because that would mean Bush was right and they were wrong and all of their emotionalism would make them look the fool to not only the rest of the country but also the rest of the world. Victory in Iraq is not an option for the Democrats not unless they can claim they engineered it in some way which at this point would be next to impossible to do. The only thing they can do is demand withdrawal of troops now in hopes that when Bush does see Iraqis ready to stand up and ours can start coming home, the democrats can say," See , we made him start bringing them home!" I think Cindy Sheehan is a blessing on Bush. She is an extremist and never ceases to put her foot in her mouth and has really pissed off middle America. I guess that's why Bush's approval ratings have been going steadily upward since he refused to meet with Cindy Sheehan, huh? What approval rating? You mean the one in November '04 which saw him swept to victory? Try reading what I wrote again, Shemp. Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~-- Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. Actually, Reaganomics was such a failure that Bush Senior had to raise taxes in order to offset some of the damage. Taxes will again have to be raised to cope with the disaster that G. W.
