Plenty. There's gold, and pink and that pansy-assed
blue that isn't ballsy enough to really be called
blue, and all the other pastels and other hues too
washed out to be called colors that he's used in TMO
publications over the years. Not a single piece of
good design in the lot. :-)

What do you know about his motifs ? Probably nothing. It could be
anything really, but my guess is that he just wanted to get rid of
some undesirable dead wood. I could be wrong and, ofcourse I'm not
pointing at you now :-)
I'm sure those that are patient and positive will get the
opportunity to teach again sometime in the future. And since much of
what Maharishi is doing is impossible to understand intellectually I
will not even try to predict when this could happen. It's all just
part of his Lila.

I can't speak for SSRS but I bet he would consider himself the
next step in the Holy Tradition. He claims that Maharishi told him to go and
give this knowledge and gave him his blessings. There came a time when Guru
Dev's master could do no more for him and sent him on his way. Does that mean
Guru Dev was not allowed to teach the knowledge he had received from his master?
Of course not. Once you possess the knowledge, it's your's to keep or
share.

Heh. I used to go through a box of pencils a week when I was a kid. Often, had
to take 5
or 6 to school with me every day because I'd lose one per class period. I was
bright
enough that the teachers never notice3d my problems. Since I already knew most
of what
was being taught, the fact that I couldn't pay attention didn't register.

Following is a pre-event announcement. 2 lakh = 200,000.

This event has drawn international attention and over 2 lakh people
are expected to take part in Mahakriya supervised by Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar.
http://www.newindpress.com/2006/artofliving/index.asp

The Aol sites reports:

Watching the crowds, crossing one million every day for 3 days,

(did any come for more than one day?)

http://www.silverjubilee.org/index.htm

Indeed from pics at the above site, it looked like an impressive
event. But I too can't find much on it in the Indain press. It makes
me think the reports of the numbers were a bit fanciful. Though, their
other reporting is solid, hard-hitting, down-to-earth:

"Words cannot do justice to what HE [SSRS] is and His contribution to
the world. One thing that really touches the heart is the depth and
reach of Gurudev's work in rural India. As each moment and each day
passes, Gurudev's volunteer's and teachers are transforming the lives
of millions of people living in the villages and they are ready for
action whether it is Tsunami, Mumbai floods or earthquake in Kashmir.

Truly Gurudev has accomplished the ancient goal of one world family,
Vasudaiva Kutumbakam. To sum up Gurudev's work is just not possible,
for the work, like the Master, is beyond definition. He has inspired
millions across the globe, and it is His presence more than anything
that inspires and elevates and awakens love in everyone. We consider
ourselves blessed to be here with Him, to be a part of this grand
celebration of human values."

A few hundred thousand people (according to the reports Icould find) is not 2.5
million.
SOunds like SSRS has taken a page from MMY's PR manual.

Bogus analogy.

Generally speaking, when somebody claims to be able
to teach people how to overcome something negative,
it's assumed the person has had some success in
overcoming it him/herself.

Celibate priests don't tend to lecture householders
(married ones, at least) how to refrain from sex
entirely (and if they did, they'd be well qualified,
assuming they were able to maintain celibacy
themselves).

But Sri Sri talks about how *not* to be angry, you
see. If he is still an obviously angry person himself,
there's reason to be skeptical that he would be the
perfect person to teach others how not to be angry.

I'm sorry that's been your experience. In general,
mine has been the opposite. Almost every time I
trusted my own intuition more than I trusted the
advice of others, it has turned out to be a good
decision.

I empathize. But part of me has to wonder which
came first -- did the ADHD/OCD trigger the distrust
of your own perceptions, or did the distrust of
your own perceptions trigger the ADHD/OCD?

Indeed. That may be the thing that the former TM

seeking -- the chance to put some energy back

You know how you get those? You read all the Vedic literature in Sanskrit, even though you don’t know what you’re reading (because you don’t speak Sanskrit).

That might be the case. One thing I have learned over the years is that my
experiences are
unreliable. *I* may think that something is so and it turns out to be
otherwise. I my think
that I am right and it turns out to be otherwise.

Of course, taking chances is the hallmark of a visionary, but when you're an
ADHD/OCD,
being a visionary is often oxymoronic.

I think selfless, simple, non-PR-focussed, group service projects by
any spriritually oriented group, are a great way to create
word-or-mouth and good buzz about a particular program.

They can also be very good for the participants’ evolution. Ego-attenuating; heart-developing.

He may not have the credentials to be *saint* but he has the credentials
to be a guru. Westerners have perverted the meaning of "guru" which
means someone who has mastered something and teaches it. If you
mastered a certain style of playing guitar and people wanted to learn
from you then you are a genuine "guru" of that method. Westerners don't
want gurus but "pop saints."

There appers to be a core of anger in your posts -- perhaps not --
appearances can b e deceiving.

Regardless, AFAIK, all $250 of the AoL fee goes to the organization.
The teachers all teach for free. Out of the joy of teaching. And
passing on something good to others.

So its not feeding their wallets. Why you also feel it is feeding
thier egos is also a mystery. My impression of meeting a lot of AoL
teachers is that its not an ego thing at all. There is not the sharp
TMO class hierarchy status thing (particularly prevalent prior to
citizen sidhas) of being a "teacher". They simply like teaching a
program that helps people. Who doesn't?

Are you basing your "ego" comments on your having met and worked with
20-50 + AoL teachers? Have you met any? If not, then it would appear
that your comments are not based on observed reality, but something in
your head. Perhaps good to figure out what that is.

Or, if it leads to greater happiness to continue to have that rattling
around inside, go for it.

I think selfless, simple, non-PR-focussed, group service projects by
any spriritually oriented group, are a great way to create
word-or-mouth and good buzz about a particular program.

Ironically, when I was more directly involved with AoL in the mid
90's, I used to recommend that -- instead of more direct promotion
that SSRS was suggesting at that paticualar time (paraphrasing "the
program is the highest need of the world today, thus promoting it is
the highest seva. Better to promote AoL as seva than other things").
That sounded SO familiar and was part of my distncing process from AoL
(Though I still think highly of SSRS as a teacher, mentor, friend and
presence.) I was quite tired of the TM proselytizing ethos in the TMO,
and particularly as a TM teacher.

And this mid-90's directive does not seem to be universal in AoL.
Since then, I have seen some community public AoL projects. And I know
of some who do a lot of good NGO work in thrid world countries under
auspiciouses of AoL -- but focus on the seva. And they have (had ..
not sure of current status) prison program, childrens programs in
India, etc.

So for AoL its a mixed bag. On a spectrum, perhaps the TMO is on one
end, Amma's group on the other, and AoL somewhere in the middle as far
as selfless community group projects. Though I would guess even Amma's
group is not perfect in this regard -- I have heard some PR-focus and
oddities there too.

So your comments about AoL's recent PR focuss don't surprise me.
Particularly given the trend I have viewed, from afar, in the past 10
years, that AoL has more and more "bliss-ninnies" aka mood-maker types
-- who are REALLY devoted to "this highest teaching" and "Best
Master", etc. Its about "the Big Thing I am involved in" and less the
practice and seva. In such an environment, the ends begin to justify
the means. PR trumps substance in seva projects. Its too bad.

The phenomenon occurs in mainstream religions. The catholic church,
and evangelicals, have done a lot of great seva type things. But often
with strong strings attached. It appears that PR/conversion-focussed
seva is a downer and often backfires -- regardless of the organization.

You actually sound sincere (as opposed to your
normal condescension), so I will reply enough
to let you know that I personally have no
desire to ever teach TM again. But I know that
there are many who do, and are prevented from
doing so by Maharishi.

If he really devised his current strategy as a
'test,' fuck him. His neurotic need to know
who is loyal to him is not more important than
the world's need for meditation.

Wrong. The Sudarshana Kriya technique is the series of

Dear friend,
What Maharishi has done resently is a test. Just keep that desire to

Basically what this means is that these "TM-teachers" that Ravi
Shankar has enlisted are liers, pretending to represent the Holy
Tradition. But what they are doing is feeding their egos and wallets.
Not very different from the so-called "independents".

This Ravi Shankar thing is mainly moodmaking; look into each others
eyes and tell them you love them, hold each others hands and form a
circle, blabla etcetc. The technique is far from what has been
described as TM+advanced technique; it's just a simple pranayama, and
Ravi is just a simple, but probably nice fellow that needs to do some
serious sadhana.

In a talkshow I watched in India he was asked how it felt to be a
guru. He blushed intensely, denying he was a guru, the whole thing
got very comical. The fellow abviously wants to be a guru, but does
not have the credidentials.

I'm hoping you meant that as a joke. :-)

She is the daughter of the other Ravi
Shankar, the musician.

And whose teacher and organization refuse to allow
them to teach, unless they spend several thousand
dollars to be "recertified" at something they are
already proficient in, give up their jobs, and
agree to work full-time for a salary that never
arrives in the mail. All of this so that they
can *not* teach, because the technique is priced
so high that no one sane would ever pay that much
to learn it.

Well, duh. If your calling is to teach meditation
and the org you first signed up with actively
prevents you from teaching meditation, you go
where someone *will* allow you to teach.

You folks who never taught meditation are sometimes
awfully quick to demonize those who did, and want
nothing more than to continue doing so...

Who better?

Are you more comfortable with teachers who talk about
things that they have no experience with? Celibate
priests lecturing householders about sex?

It seems to me that someone who has had some exper-
ience with anger and its debilitating effects would
be the perfect person to talk about it.

As much as I appreciate the humor at Jody's site,
I don't think he (?) sees the world through colorless
glasses. All of his (?) rants seem pretty much the
same, no matter who he is talking about. In other
words, he's ranting about the things he's not comfort-
able with in himself, as projected onto others. Me,
I'd be happier with someone who realizes that he's
just as human as anyone else, and can talk about what
he's learned from doing things the stupid way.

Chogyam Trungpa used to speak of his teachings as
"The path of fucking up." Meaning that he felt that
he and his students tended to learn much more from
their 'mistakes' in life than they learned from their
'successes.'

Maybe he's dealing with people who are content
with trusting their own experiences, and who
don't need to be shown no steenkin' badges
(in the form of 'science') in order to believe
those experiences.

One of the comments on this sounds just like the people complaining about MMY
and the
TMO:

ontheotherhand said...
How funny that one of angriest people I've ever met (SSRS) would preach to
these people
on anger and irritation affecting their actions. I can't even enumerate the
numbers of times
I've seen his anger/irritation cause is actions to be irrational at best, and
harmful to others
at worst. He is such a hypocrite, it boggles the mind to think that others are
not seeing
through him. Those who are close enough are finished off in that their lives
are over in the
world -- he took it all away -- career, money, name, etc., so they can't really
argue with
him anymore or contradict him. I mean, what does a former district attorney
from LA who
gave up her career for him do after following him around for 15 years, having
thrown away
her education and career for him? She has to simply agree, and go around and
teach his BS
"happily" I suppose. And a former Prince of Kerala? (I'm not kidding.) So he
got a title of
"Rishi" or "Swami" from SSRS. That's the least he could do for the poor guy who
was
brainwashed into leaving his life for this mission.

Peace prize? We don't think the rest of the world will be fooled by him.
Intellectuals giving
out this prize frown on people like SSRS who routinely post lies about his
past, creating
fantastic stories about his "earning an advanced degree in Physics", etc. (see
Wikipedia),
when the man never even completed one year of college.

I'm tired of this guy. I hope he goes away soon. Maybe he could go to the
mountains and
do some sadana and get enlightened. That would be nice for the world. That
would create
much more peace than the group of bickering mental cases running around him.

He identifies MMY as his master, does he not? Does he have them do a puja to
MMY?

Re: [FairfieldLife] Re: SSRS: 20 million?

2006-06-20 Thread Sal Sunshine
While I have no real qualms with SSRS himself, his organization, at least when I was involved (which was only for a little over a year in the 90s), almost made the TMO look good--and that ain't easy. On the first course I took, without telling us before hand, they made the announcement at the first meeting that we would all be on a fruit diet, for the entire course--6 days. Not only was that a dirty trick (IMO of course--perhaps others liked it) but couldn't that possibly affect someone's health, if they were diabetic, or had digestive problems? To make matters worse, I and a number of others were housed in the building adjacent to his...with the lovely smell of delicious Indian food wafting over 3 times daily. Try fasting with **that** happening. Anyway, of course we cheated--why not, he was--and went into town where I and a few others had at least a couple of decent meals. But we sure didn't appreciate having to shell out yet more $$ after having paid for room and board for the course...the worst part being, IMO, that nobody had bothered to tell us beforehand--a deliberate omission, because they were afraid nobody would come otherwise? Who knows. Then there were the meetings themselves, at which any number of people would be fighting with each other--literally--to sit as close to the front as possible.

The second course, the one in Pittsburgh, was another classic "Oops, they did it again..." scenario. This one was so bad it would make a great plot for a movie where nothing goes right. It wasn't enough that they put all of us into smoking rooms--so when you turned on the heat (it was February) you got blasted with enough cigarette smoke to choke an elephant--they then pulled Trick #2. Into tiny rooms in which we barely had enough space to walk, those of us on the long part of the course (6 days) then had to share whatever microscopic amount of free space was left with the 2-day course participants--I doubt they knew that was going to happen, and I know we didn't. Add to that that there were a couple of TM vagrants who hadn't registered and were staying at the hotel illegally, seriously ticking off the management, and you have the makings for, possibly, the Worst Course Ever.

I have no idea how much of all of this SSRS knew about, but it was his organization and he does bear some of the responsibility. On a personal level, I felt he was much warmer and more approachable than MMY. But after those two disasters, I pretty much gave up on all of them.
