2009-03-06 Thread dlgegg
sorry to be late with this, been a while since i logged in. my Annie was
diagnosed felv + at age 4 when i got her. her owner was dying with liver
cancer and could not keep her. if the right home could not be found, she
wanted put to sleep. she spent 21 days locked in her owners trailer alone with
only contact when owner's sister came to feed her and clean box. when i got
her, she was pretty stressed out and since she had never been around other
cats, not happy with 2 i already had being there. she seems to be an alpha
female and bullied my other female Homey who was a stray. she had been spayed
by previous owner who used same vet i use. since then, i have taken in 3 more
babies, 2 whom no one wanted because they were 10 years old and 1, a stray whom
a lady had been feeding. he had been hit by a car and needed 2 pins in his
leg. she could not afford it so opted to put to sleep. he was so sweet, vet
opted to fix his leg and find a home for him. this is same vet who found me
for Annie. he knows a soft touch when he sees one. with each new cat, Annie
has been agressive, but met her match with Casey who is also alpha female.
still have a problem with Lil Bit and Annie. she is reclusive, 10 years old
and when she does come into the room with others, she hisses and screams just
like Annie. Lil Bit is also very skittish, the least sound or motion and she
runs out of the room. i am going to test Annie again, since she had never been
positive before all the upheavel in her life and we are thinking maybe she was
exposed as a baby, developed and immunity and was okayuntil all the trauma.
she is better than she was with the others and has settled down some so now we
think would be a good time to retest. Annie, Casey, Homey and Bob all are
in/out cats depending on the weather. i live in the middle of the woods so it
is fairly safe and they usually spend most of their time on the deck and about
half way down the bluff. have very little contact with wild animals. seem to
sense it is smarter to sty away from them than try to fight them. all the
others have been vaccinated for felv along with rabies and the other shots.
since they do have a chance of contacting rabies carrying animals, fell shots
are necessary. i do nt try to seperate Annie from others, seems cruel to do
so, plus she can open doors. so far, she has shown no signs of illness, is fat
and sassy, eats good, drinks plenty of waterand is in general a healthy cat.
keep my fingers crossed. of course at first sign of a problem, will rush her
to vet. dorlis

My big boy, General Sterling Price, came to me. I have never owned a
cat in my life. I was working in my flowers in April 2007 when this
big black tuxedo cat came and CLIMBED ON MY BACK. I was not happy. I
tried to shoo him away. He was having none of it. He was like a bag
of bones. And he cried so pitifully that I went and got him a bowl of
milk (I didn't know cats weren't supposed to have milk any more than
dogs are!) He drank it down so I got him another, which he drank down.
The next day he was still out there. So I brought him dog food out
(it's all I had) and he ate the entire bowl. So the next day, when he
was still there, I bought him a sack of some sort of cat food at the
grocery. He ate it of course. After 3 weeks of doing this I decided
that if he was gonna hang around, then he was gonna be neutered. So I
took him to the vet. He did the required blood tests and said this cat
is FeLV+. You might as well have him put to sleep as he's gonna die
anyway. By then I had developed an attachment to him, so I changed
vets. (I now take him to the Nashville Cat Clinic) This boy went from
living outside to living in the garage to now living in the house and
sleeping in the bed with the Mini Schnauzer who hates him and my
husband and me. He has some really strange eating habits these days.
He won't eat any one food for long. My vet wants him on grain free
canned but he's not willing to eat that right now. He is now eating
Evo dry and Halo dry. He'll eat one for 2-3 days and then he won't eat
it and I'll change. The only problem I have is that I can no longer
get him to take his supplements. He's on an immune system supplement
that is a tablet I used to mix with the wet food. Now he won't eat it
if I do. I've tried even mixing it in tuna and he won't eat it. So
I'm in a little bit of a state over this. he is also on interferon 7
days on and 7 days off. I've also had some problems with this lately
as he seems to throw up on the days that I give him interferon. He's
had a kidney infection he's overcome. he has had pancreatitis that
he's overcome, and he's had some fairly chronic upper respiratory
infections. We think he's probably about 4-7 years old. He came to me
when he was between 2-5 we think. I think he was dumped because he has
such a love of humans. He's a big (15 lbs now) lapcat. He loves to be
petted. He loves to be around people. He follows me every step I
take, if the dog will let him. His only stress is the Mini Schnauzer
who is 12 and has epilepsy :-) She hates him. He just tries to stay
out of her way. (She sleeps on the bed at the foot and he sleeps up at
the head, by my head!) Every time he sneezes I worry. But he's
hanging in there so far, and as far as I can tell he is prospering. He
has had rabies vaccine and calici virus in the past but I don't know if
we'll do rabies this year since he isn't outside now. I'll have to
talk to my vet about that and the calici too.

Heard of it, and it is WAAAY too expensive. You can buy a pound of powder
lysine for about $15, it is made by NOW and sold in many online places..
That would give you about 1644 250mg doses. It has no taste and mixed with
wet food just about any cat will just eat it. It is really sort of
granulated and some of mine don't like the feel so I dissolve it in a tiny
bit of water.

on the L-Lysine, my vet ordered an oral paste for me. no one is sick right
now, but i give it as a preventative. name is Enisyl-F, made by Vetoquinol

water, sorbitol, cod liver oil, zanthan gum, tuna flavor, soy lecithin,
silica aerogel, carmel color, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. they
reccomend 1 - 2 ml a day for adults and 1ml for kittens. anyone heard of

 Hi Sidney
The General sounds like a fabulous cat. It is great that he persisted.
Are you using l-lycine as a supplement? I was able to get rid of a
 really
bad upper respiratory with it. I buy it in capsule form and mix the
 powder
into cats food and my cat, who could be a forensic pathologist when
 it comes to
detecting supplements, does not know it is there. I make sure she
 gets 500mg
daily and although it takes time, it usually works.

I also use interferon, but give it on and off each day, rather than
 weeks. I wonder
if that would make a difference.

There is a study underway (Dr. Jean Dodds ..Rabies Challenge) to
 prove that we over vaccinate
our animals and that one rabies shot should protect an animal for its
 lifetime. You can Google
the 'rabies challenge' and read about the study and the vets who are
 involved. A rabies shot
can be stressful for a healthy animal. I would think twice about
 vaccinating an Felv kittie.

Hope your General continues to thrive.

Our biggest issue with Autumn is that she wants constant people interaction
and if you don't entertain her she will go into a rage and bite and scratch.
Rage is the only way to describe it. She will sit and stare at you meow and
sometimes I can't figure out what she wants. At that point it is only a
countdown to her attacking me. I end up with bloody bites, bruises and
scratches. We have tried very hard to break her of this. You have to do
something because if you ignore her it only escalates. We have tried the
squirt bottle on the vet's recommendation and she will simply sneak up
behind me and bite the back of my arm and run away. She bites hard and
leaves terrible bruises and puncture wounds. The best thing is Time Out
which removes all the stimulation. It's the only thing that seems to calm
her, but if you let her out too early she will stalk back over to you and
attack. My best guess is that she didn't have siblings or anyone to play
with and teach her that biting hurts. We love her, she can be very sweet,
but I wish I could break her of these attacks. I don't know if she's
frustrated or bored? She has a ton of toys and some are free-standing and
she can and does play with them by herself. I just don't know. Has anyone
 else had this problem?

Our biggest issue with Autumn is that she wants constant people
interaction
and if you don't entertain her she will go into a rage and bite and
scratch.
Rage is the only way to describe it. She will sit and stare at you meow
and
sometimes I can't figure out what she wants.

You can also buy in pill form and crush it yourself. This is the least
expensive way.
Mine also like Viralys which is a flavored powder and about 3 times as
expensive as the pills.

Heard of it, and it is WAAAY too expensive. You can buy a pound of powder
lysine for about $15, it is made by NOW and sold in many online places..
That would give you about 1644 250mg doses. It has no taste and mixed with
wet food just about any cat will just eat it. It is really sort of
granulated and some of mine don't like the feel so I dissolve it in a tiny
bit of water.

silica aerogel, carmel color, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. they

WHAT FOOD DO/DID YOU FEED? Science Diet then; Innova Evo now

WHAT LIFESTYLE DO YOUR CATS LEAD, E.G; INDOOR, OUTDOOR/BOTH? Mine are all
indoor; I let them go in the backyard with me sometimes, but only under

LIVE WITH OTHER CATS OR NOT? My FeLV+ did live in the house with my 3 others,
none of which became positive; they were vaccinated

HAS YOUR CAT HAD/HAVE ANY OTHER ILLNESSES AND OR STRESS IN LIFE? At 2.5 yo,
when he was diagnosed, he had all his nails ripped out from running from a dog,
going up a brick column trying to get away.  His nails got infected, and he got
very sick, which the vet didn't catch.  He just ran tests and said FeLV+, and
gave up on him.  I finally figured out what happened when the vet had tested
him for FeLV and then just left him in his cage with no treatment, even after I
asked him to give IV fluids if he wasn't taking water, which he wasn't.  I had
a horrible gut feeling, and left work to go check on him, and found him lying
in his cage, almost lifeless, no fight left in him, and the vet wasn't taking
care of him.  Took him home with anti-biotics and nursed him back to health
with fluids and assist feeding every hour or so, and antibiotics.  I noticed
his feet then, and realized what must have happened.  He was fine for another
two years, until a
hurricane hit Texas and my ex-husband's family came to stay with us for a week
(10 of them) and it stressed my kitty out and he developed anemia.  He died
about three weeks later.

WHAT AGE IS YOUR CAT NOW? OR WHEN THEY DIED? 4.5 yo

WHAT DID THEY DIE OF? anemia.  I did not treat with doxycycline for hemobart at
the time.  Had I a do-over, I certainly would have.  Strongly suspect he might
have had hemobart, but at the time, I did not know about hemobart, and frankly
was overwhelmed trying to help him and deal with his illness and quick demise.
It was heartbreaking.

L-lysine is not a general immune booster, it is primarily effective against
herpes virus (which sometimes causes URI like symptoms and runny eyes) by
suppressing the L-arginine that herpes virus needs in order to replicate.
I'm not saying it doesn't do anything else, I just haven't seen anything
that shows that it does. But, since it won't do any harm, I suppose giving
it couldn't hurt. I would suggest buying the 1 lb. jar of powdered lysine
made by NOW, a lot easier to use and less expensive than capsules. The jar
contains 822 500mg doses.

We adopted our cat Maggie when she was 8 weeks or so old. She was a happy
healthy kitten until about 6-7 weeks later. She had gingivitis and diarrhea and
her lymph nodes were the size of large grapes. We had he tested ( she was
tested before we brought her home and she was negative) she tested positive
this time on the ELISA test. We immediately tested our 12 year old cat Sasha
and she was negative. 12 weeks later we tested her again and she was still
positive so we had an IFA test done to see if it had progressed into her bone
marrow. Sad to say it has, it was a very strong positive.
We feed her soft food by pro plan and hard purina kitten chow.
Our cats are strictly indoors.
She lives with Sasha still who thank God is still negative.
Maggie's main symptoms are diarrhea (lots of diarrhea), sneezing, vomiting,
swollen lymph nodes, painful gums/teeth.
She seems happy and as long as that is the case she will continue to have a
home here with us no matter how many messes I have to clean up a week.
She takes Tylan powder for her diarrhea which seems to help alot. Her vet is
not that experienced at dealing with FELV positive cats so I have been getting
alot of ideas from everyone's emails.

Tommy tested positive at 3 1/2 months old.

He is seeing a holistic vet, who gave him Vetri-DMG (an immune
system booster) and a homeopathic mixture of antivirals. The
homeopathic meds are Galium and Engystol. His holistic vet
recommended that I get him vaccinated one more time (which I did) for
FVRCPC, and then NO MORE vaccines. Definitely not rabies, as it is a
live virus.

He is eating Solid Gold Indigo Moon, a grain-free holistic food. He
also gets canned food twice a day.

Tommy is an indoor kitty, and lives with my two negative cats. I
decided not to separate them after talking with the wonderful people
on this list because the exposure had already taken place, and
separation would have been too stressful for all of them and me!

He has not shown any signs of illness, other than he has had loose,
smelly stools. I am trying a new supplement for that. He was neutered
on 1/29 which I was afraid would be a stress to him, but he did really
well! He is a happy, healthy, 6 month old kitten. :) In fact, I plan
to have him retested in about a month.

2009-02-08 Thread Jane Lyons

Hi Tonya
Maggie's symptoms sound identical to the ones we were dealing with
two years ago.
We used so many supplements and remedies that I am not sure what did
what, but two
years later we have a kittie who seems happy and healthy with the
exception of her

mouth, which somedays seems irritated and somedays, not.

Here are the things we used:
l-lycine for the viral symptoms (upper respiratory). You can get it
at a health food store. I used
500mg capsules which I opened and sprinkled into her wet food twice a
day.

DMG Liquid which is a formula designed to boost her immune system. We
gave her a dose daily.

Forti-Flora is a probiotic that helped her get rid of diarrhea and
supposedly is an overall boost

for her immunity.

We also tried to find the best quality cat food that she would
tolerate. We wound up feeding her

Petguard which is available at Whole Foods.

Since we were able to get rid of her symptoms we are now giving her
interferon every other day,
hoping to keep her immunity up and enable her to fight off secondary
infections.

As we've all learned, there isn't a magic pill and every kittie
reacts differently. I hope Maggie is able
to get rid of her symptoms and continue to enjoy the love and care
you've given to her.

Autumn was born FELV+ and tested positive at 8 weeks and ever since. I found
her outdoors at an apartment complex. We don't treat her Leukemia per se, we
just try to keep her stress level down and treat conditions as they arise.
Autumn eats Innova Evo. She is an only cat and an indoor cat. Last week I
let her play in some powdery snow on the balconey and she LOVED it. So cute!
Autumn has had some bad illnesses related to the Distemper shot. They tend
to make her very ill and once caused all of her lymph nodes to swell. We
couldn't pick her up without causing extreme pain. She is fine with the 3
year rabies vaccine. She is poorly socialized perhaps from not having
siblings (?) and bites people so we thought it best to get the rabies.
Autumn also had eye problems that cause her eyes to swell up and close. We
are currently trying to revent flares with Ocufen. One drop a day in each
eye. It stings:-( She usually flares after stress like if we have large
amount of company. Sometimes it flares for no reason at all. She is 1 and
1/2 and seems to be thriving.

Stripes ~ diagnosed in 1987 at age 14 (I adopted him in 1982 at age 9).
Tested because of chronic illness. No treatments other than treating the
presenting health problem. Fed Friskies (didn't know any better)~ the 2 low
ash canned diets and some dry food. Can't remember the name. It was not a
grocery store brand. He was an inside cat, lived with Squeaky since he was
one year of age (the people I adopted them from said one came from a pet
store or shelter and the other from a farm). Pretty stress free life after
coming with me. I am sure it was stressful for him to go to someone new at
age 9. He was always the more timid cat. Not sure what he died from. He
died at age 16. Was anorexic for 3 weeks. Saw vet every other day for
fluids. Was getting vitamin shots, too. Again, a long time ago. He and
Squeaky were my first cats.

Squeaky ~ diagnosed in 1987 at age 13 (adopted in 1982 at age 8).No
treatments. Friskies (the 2 low ash diets)until 199?. We switched to canned
CD upon vet recommendation. Recall he having trouble eating the dry food.
Don't remember why. Inside only. Lived with Stripes~ grieved when he died.
No illness. Vet said he was a carrier of the FeLV virus (in his bone
marrow). He died at age 22 of oral cancer diagnosed 3 weeks before.
Perfectly healthy until his first dental cleaning in Sept 1996. Died less
than 2 months later.

Isabella ~ diagnosed when rescued in May 2007. Estimated to be 2 years of
age though she has almost doubled in weight since we rescued her. She gets
interferon one week on/one week off. Her adopter did more at first because
she was very sick ~ very high fever. Treated with pain killer and steroids
in addition to interferon. Weaned off both within the past 6 months. She
eats EVO dry and Fancy Feast or Low residue canned. Inside cat now. Found
her outside. No other cats. Recent stress in having her mom gone a lot with
work (hope she does ok.). she is estimated to be 4. She is very healthy
and weighs about 12 lbs.

[Felvtalk] FeLV survey, please take part, just a personal one to better understand FeLV

2009-02-07 Thread Carmen Conklin
We have 40 FeLV cats (and several kittens) at our special needs sanctuary
where they live in cage free environment with outdoor enclosed screened in
areas to spend time in. I so applaud those of you who care for a FeLV kitty
and offer them a forever home til there time is up. We work with rescues all
across the U.S. and there are just not enough homes to go around for these
special kits. I wanted to add my thoughts to the survey list:
We have cats from 4 months to 12 years currently residing at our sanctuary
home. We use Alpha interferon in their water daily and occasionally use oral
for some of the cats. They are fed Purina Pro Plan dry and get canned food
every day. The interferon in the water does help their immune systems we
feel.
I have had several non positive cats live with the positives and they
remained negative throughout the years they were living with the FeLV cats.
They also did not fight.
The kitties we lost to FeLV have lymphomas, cancer, anemia (with cancer
usually) or sudden total system failure (most likely caused by an undetected
cancer at the time).
The kittens we have worked with include:
a family whose mother and two siblings died of FeLV after rescue, and four
other youngsters that arrived to live with us for their lives-only one of
those is still with us and doing just fine.
The others we have are getting close to one year or two years and both of
those ages we find to be critical times for FeLV cats-
If they live through age 2 we see little health problems until age five-and
then some become symptomatic at age five and others do not and can go on to
live longer healthy lives. All of our FeLV are very healthy robust cats
until they become symptomatic.
These cats have little stress in their lives and are very happy to be back
outside in their outdoor areas with the weather starting to be nice in Iowa
now.

2009-02-06 Thread Sue Frank Koren
Amanda,
My FeLV+ kittys:
Buzzy - My first positive, he was adopted in January of '08 at about one year
old. He had tested negative for feline leukemia in November of '07, but tested
positive shortly after he was adopted. From the time I had him he was fed
Wellness. He had been abused when he lived on the streets before my sister in
law found him, and he was a very nervous kitty. I will always believe that if
he had a more laid-back temperment he would have lived longer. Buzz was
diagnosed with anemia in July of '08. He was brought out of it with Doxycycline
and Prednesolone, but it came back in October and and the meds were no longer
working. I lost him the week before Thanksgiving.

Orlando - I adopted him in July of '08 at 10 years old. He had been living in a
barn with about 20 other cats that a woman owned. When she passed away a local
no-kill shelter took him in along with all the others. About half of those cats
tested positive at that time. He lived in the FeLV/FIV room of that sanctuary
from January of '08 until I adopted him. He also eats Wellness mixed with extra
water and Lysine. He gets a Cosequin tablet mixed in his food morning and
evening. He is a very sweet laid-back no stress kind of cat. He once had a
broken leg that did not heal right, so he has a crooked leg. Other then that he
seems to be in excellent health. Maybe too fat. (Definitely too fat.)

Tweezer - A local rescue group was keeping him in a cage when they found out
that I have positive and negative cats mixed and free to roam the house. They
asked me if I would take him, and when I found out he had been living in a cage
for months, I adopted him. He is now approx. 2 1/2 years old. I brought him
home on Sept.17th of '08. He weighed 3 1/2 lbs and felt like a skeleton. He had
an upper resperatory infection, weepy eyes, ear mites, a tapeworm and was so
weak he couldn't climb up one stair. I still can't believe the director of that
group allowed him to be in such horrible shape. Anyway, he was put on Wellness
mixed with water and Lysine and began to gain weight very quickly. He was on
several runs of Doxycycline and other antibiotics and has continued to improve.
Today he weights approx. 8 1/2 lbs. He has one mildly cloudy eye that the vet
says is a cataract due to being malnourished as a kitten. His URI comes back
now and then and gets so bad that he sneezes blood. He is once again on a round
of Doxycycline. The great thing about this cat is his amazing love of life. He
is the happiest little guy I have ever seen. He is so very happy to be out of a
cage and feeling good.

My two positives live with five negative cats who are all vaccinated against
feline leukemia. All are indoor cats. I would like to put my positives on some
kind of immunity boosting/vitamin supplement, but with so many making claims
out there I am unsure what to trust. I know this was long, but I hope it helps.

Amanda,
I feed a dumpster colony of cats. I have spayed/neutered 8 of the these cats
and kept 7. Of the 7 six have tested FeLV+ more than once using the ELISHA
test. These 6 were kittens ranging in age from 4 weeks to 12 weeks of age when
I rescued them. I lost Bright Eyes at 7 months from FeLV. Three are now 8
months old and the other 2 are 14 months old.

The babies get kitten canned and dry. The older 2 now eat Fancy Feast. They
refused to eat any of the 'higher' quality canned.

All received DMG, Lactoferrin, B12. B-Complex, L-Lysine, and folic acid. The
babies still get the supplements. The older 2 refuse to eat canned food with
the supplements added. Who would of thought dumpster kitties would get picky
about their food.

All are strictly indoor kitties. My negative kitties have been vaccinated and
show no ill affects from mixing. All my cats have been neutered/spayed.

I doubt you will find a trend. I think you will find the results of what we do
for these babies is really based on a low stress environment, good nutrition,
love and luck. Otherwise why would 5 be thriving while Bright Eyes died.

By the way I have 3 calico kittens I just rescued this week waiting to be
spayed this week end. They had a different Mom from my other rescues so I am
optimistic they will be negative.

I do not know what age Mandy became leukemia-positive. I adopted her at age
6 and she was positive at that time. She has no symptoms so I am doing no
treatments at this time. My 7 cats are all strictly indoor--the other 6 are
vaccinated and interact with Mandy. In two years, no one has gotten sick.

Mandy also has had a UTI so is strictly fed Prescription CD or ID, both wet
and dry. She is a very small cat but eats like one twice her size.

Mandy is 7 right now. From looking at her, you would not know she is ill.

I have seven cats, the youngest being Taz was diagnosed with FeLv when she
started getting sick after about 1 month with my other negative kitties all of
which are vacinated. I took Taz in to get her looked at and to get her shots.
That's when they tested her for FeLv and she came back positive. I feed her
stinky salmon and white tuna, some Fancy Feast kitten food and some baby food,
whatever I can get her to eat. She hates the Science Diet the vet recommended.
I'va also boiled chicken for her for the broth and meat. I've had her on
Imulan and have seen some mixed results but she is gaining weight, happy and
bouncy so I'm continuing with the expensive treatments. She also get Pet Tinic
everyday and DMG. I've seperated her from my other cats, which I hate because
she was buddies with my three legged tuxedo kitty, but this was recommended by
the vet. She said that vacinations are not a guarantee against the disease if
the cats are exposed to it enough. All of my kitties are indoor kitties except
one does get outdoor roaming priviledges because it gives him a better
attitude. The rest of the cats get there outdoor stuff on a large screened in
porch basically built just for them.
It's hard having a FeLv kitty because I travel so much for work which means I
board her at the vets while I'm gone which of course stresses her some. The
people love her at the vet but I think it directly affects her wellness with
regard to the blood work-up and down.
Sorry for the long diatribe.

2009-02-06 Thread Cougar Clan

This is Dixie's story:

For reasons unknown, a little grey full grown female came to my Mom's
and began eating with the ferals she feeds and staying in a rubbermaid
box I had outfitted as a shelter. I decided she should be a farm cat
at my farm when I got the house built. I took her to Louisville to my
long time vets at Middletown Animal Clinic to be spayed. They tested
her for FeLV and, when they called to break the news, we decided to
board her there until I could figure things out. She could not be
released into the colony. Her teeth were the only symptom that showed
and they were not bad. I made arrangements for her to stay in the
garage at my Mom's and eventually took her and the Royal Princess
Kitty Katt (who was terminally ill with cancer) to a trailer where we
lived for a while. After I decided that Dixie could not be killed (I
had no experience with FeLV+ and was lucky to find this group), I took
her to Dr. Betty Boswell, DMV, a holistic vet who had treated several
of my four legged friends--the doctors at MAC had originally sent me
to her with a beagle and knew I was taking Dixie). Betty put Dixie
on lots of supplements and we fed her the best foods available. After
the Chinese pet food scar she ate no food that had grains in it. She
ate Taste of the Wild, Wellness and Primal Raw. I realize that some
think FeLV+ cats should not eat raw diets. It was the right thing for
Dixie. She flourished for three wonderful years in which she had
everything I could give her. She had wonderful Christmas trees, every
toy a cat could want and more, blankets, beds, and, eventually two
houses, one with a wonderful 400 sq. foot sunroom equipped with lots
of windows to watch deer, turkey etc through. She suddenly had an
abscess on her neck and died within a week or so. My wonderful little
lady was on colostrum, lots of veggies chopped into her food (high in
Vitamin C), various Standard Process supplements, and other things I
got from Betty or Dr. Susan Maier, another holistic vet. She was not
vaccinated for anything after the test came back. I do not know how
ld she was when she came into my life but I suspect around 3-4 years.
I don't know why she was on her own. She had been spayed and had
wonderful manners so she may have been dumped. I don't know but I
will always be grateful for the time we had together. A month after
she left this world, she sent me Copper and two weeks later she sent
Thomas. Both of these little guys are FeLV- to the delight of my vets
at MAC who were high fiving all over the place when the tests came
back. Both of the kittens came from the pine thicket that Dixie and
the Royal Princess Kitty Katt came from so we were all concerned.
They were extremely small (Copper ran through the links of a chain
link fence without even sucking his gut in and he was about 8 weeks
old) and, while their mothers gave them the best care, their mothers
didn't have the food and care they would have had under ideal
conditions. The story of the kittens is wonderful but has nothing to
do with your questions. I urge you to find a holistic vet and consult
that vet along with your regular vets. Some will consult by phone if
you cannot locate one. I do not regret one minute with Dixie Louise.
She was a perfectly wonderful little lady who was very protective of
me and very attentive. Needless to say, I miss my little lady very
much. My heart broke into a thousand pieces or more when she died
laying right beside me in the Jeep that took her on many wonderful
adventures. I am grateful for my time with her and grateful that she
was able to leave this world after leaving the vets and without
assistance in a place she always felt safe. She taught me, as did the
Royal Princess Kitty Katt, to appreciate the time we have and not look
at what may come. Everyone dies and everyone dies from something.
The goal is to live well and be happy. Each one has to decide what
that means for himself. Blessings to you and your little friends.

I just re-read your questions. Dixie Louise was an indoor cat from
the day she tested positive except for a few unauthorized walk
abouts. When I moved out of my Mom's (I was building a house) and
into a trailer to provide her a warm winter home Dixie lived with
Kitty Katt. Again, Kitty was terminally ill and I was not concerned
about transmitting the disease to her. Dixie proved very good for
Kitty by the way.

While I did everything I could to keep stress down, Dixie's life was
far from stress free. I was building a house; we moved into the house
from the trailer while it was still being worked on (I won't go into
it but email me before you deal with any log home company); Kitty was
terminally ill and that was stressful for everyone; the trailer was
difficult for her; the garage life was difficult for us; she loved to
travel though so going to our house in Louisville was good for both of
us.

This is Dixie's story:

For reasons unknown, a little grey full grown female came to my
Mom's and began eating with the ferals she feeds and staying in a
rubbermaid box I had outfitted as a shelter. I decided she should
be a farm cat at my farm when I got the house built. I took her to
Louisville to my long time vets at Middletown Animal Clinic to be
spayed. They tested her for FeLV and, when they called to break the
news, we decided to board her there until I could figure things
out. She could not be released into the colony. Her teeth were the
only symptom that showed and they were not bad. I made arrangements
for her to stay in the garage at my Mom's and eventually took her
and the Royal Princess Kitty Katt (who was terminally ill with
cancer) to a trailer where we lived for a while. After I decided
that Dixie could not be killed (I had no experience with FeLV+ and
was lucky to find this group), I took her to Dr. Betty Boswell,
DMV, a holistic vet who had treated several of my four legged
friends--the doctors at MAC had originally sent me to her with a
beagle and knew I was taking Dixie). Betty put Dixie on lots of
supplements and we fed her the best foods available. After the
Chinese pet food scar she ate no food that had grains in it. She
ate Taste of the Wild, Wellness and Primal Raw. I realize that some
think FeLV+ cats should not eat raw diets. It was the right thing
for Dixie. She flourished for three wonderful years in which she
had everything I could give her. She had wonderful Christmas trees,
every toy a cat could want and more, blankets, beds, and, eventually
two houses, one with a wonderful 400 sq. foot sunroom equipped with
lots of windows to watch deer, turkey etc through. She suddenly had
an abscess on her neck and died within a week or so. My wonderful
little lady was on colostrum, lots of veggies chopped into her food
(high in Vitamin C), various Standard Process supplements, and other
things I got from Betty or Dr. Susan Maier, another holistic vet.
She was not vaccinated for anything after the test came back. I do
not know how ld she was when she came into my life but I suspect
around 3-4 years. I don't know why she was on her own. She had
been spayed and had wonderful manners so she may have been dumped.
I don't know but I will always be grateful for the time we had
together. A month after she left this world, she sent me Copper and
two weeks later she sent Thomas. Both of these little guys are
FeLV- to the delight of my vets at MAC who were high fiving all over
the place when the tests came back. Both of the kittens came from
the pine thicket that Dixie and the Royal Princess Kitty Katt came
from so we were all concerned. They were extremely small (Copper
ran through the links of a chain link fence without even sucking his
gut in and he was about 8 weeks old) and, while their mothers gave
them the best care, their mothers didn't have the food and care they
would have had under ideal conditions. The story of the kittens is
wonderful but has nothing to do with your questions. I urge you to
find a holistic vet and consult that vet along with your regular
vets. Some will consult by phone if you cannot locate one. I do
not regret one minute with Dixie Louise. She was a perfectly
wonderful little lady who was very protective of me and very
attentive. Needless to say, I miss my little lady very much. My
heart broke into a thousand pieces or more when she died laying
right beside me in the Jeep that took her on many wonderful
adventures. I am grateful for my time with her and grateful that
she was able to leave this world after leaving the vets and without
assistance in a place she always felt safe. She taught me, as did
the Royal Princess Kitty Katt, to appreciate the time we have and
not look at what may come. Everyone dies and everyone dies from
something. The

We don't know when our positive contracted the disease. We purchased him at
4 years, being told he was perfectly healthy. He died in less than two
months after we got him. When we took him to the vet we were told he was
positive but for his well being should have him neutered anyway. I will
forever wish we had not put him through that stress. He was infected with
earmites and fleas and we had him groomed and treated. Probably more stress
for him. Over a period of 4 weeks, he went from just being fatigued to
having to go in to have fluid aspirated from his lungs on a weekly basis
just so he could breath. In the beginning he was started on Docycyclin and
another antibiotic, then interferon. He was scheduled to have a blood
transfusion on a Tuesday but on the Sunday he was having difficulty
breathing, having just had his lungs aspirated on the Friday so we took him
to the emergency clinic where we were told we had to let him go. He died of
leukemia/FIV and peritonitis. I understand FIV cannot be diagnosed without
an autopsy but all the clinical signs were there. We had gone as far as
humanly possible in trying to save him and it was time to let him rest. I
still choke up just writing about this. We've adopted 2 needy girls since
but they aren't positive. I honestly do not think I could go through the
pain of another positive cat, although, if I had one, I probably would do
most of the same things all over again. Our cat was too sick and the
disease too far advanced to save him. Had we got him in its earlier stages
and given him proper care right from the start, I like to think he'd still
be with us.

Lynne,

You gave him a home, love and care. It was not your fault that he had
these problems when he came to you any more than it was mine that
Dixie was positive. They come to us for a reason and for whatever
time we are blessed with, no matter what the cost to our hearts.
There is a reason. Maybe it is to enlarge our ability to give. I
don't know but I do know that they are a blessing even if it is
painful. Know that you did everything right for him.

I agree, they do enlarge our ability to give. If I hadn't run home and
googled FeLV and found this group Boo may have been euthanized the very day
we got the call asking us if we wanted to put him down. If nothing else,
that little guy helped educate us about this miserable disease. When we
took Snowy into the vet last week, her vet talked to us about our experience
with Boo and was very pleased that we did what we did for him. Turns out he
had a positive cat and did all he could do for him as well. He also
mentioned that there are new develpments with treating the disease but
they're not yet available, at least over here.
