Guess the worst I've got right now are 4 that were thrown away - just happen to have a genetic disease called Eyelid Agenesis - virtually, no eyelid.  Surgery has taken care of the 2 girls but the 2 boys will need a 3rd surgery. Re: [Felvtalk] Anyone There....

2017-10-16 Thread dlgegg
I feel for you loosing 3 in one year, it is hard enough to just loose one a
year. Anie was my last to go. Hoepfully Harley, Dee and Homie are healthy and
will live long lives. I am the one with problems, went in for routine visit
and was sent to cardioligist who told me I needed surgery. I did not agree so
he told me ok, patient refused surgery, next day was informed patient passed.
So I went for many rounds of tests, heart, brathing, etc. and had the aortic
valve replaced on 8/31, and pacemaker on 9/1 and went home on 9/2.. I had the
TAVR proceedure done which runs the new bovine valve from an incision in the
groin through the arteries to the heart. It goes inside the old valve and a
metal framework forces the old valve open more. This is the way to go if you
do not want a lo g hospital stay and open heart surgery. I have been "resting"
since the last of June and will continue to be on restricted activity until
December. Then I have to get my muscles toned up again. I insisted on being
able to clean boxes, fill water fountains and feed my cats. So, they only had
to make do with someone else for 3 days. You cannot drive for 2 weeks. This
has been my biggest problem, not doing anything but crosswords and crochet.
I thought maybe I was missing out on things, but sitting and sleeping keeps you
off the internet. Thought maybe everyone was free from illness and all kitties
were doing fine.

idea why
I thought of all of you recently when it was time to put my Hospice Cat
( Gilbert) down Third cat I have lost in a year   I'm 0 for 3 at
this point and am thinking it might be time to take on a more healthy
animal but I keep harkening back to amani's words... If not us... who??
Certainly not the people who don't much care about cats...nor the vast
majority of people who HAVE cats.  There are SO many deserving
animals out there that have problems that place them low on the adoption
list  they ALL deserve to have a home and someone to see them as
special  Gilbert was not adoptable with his brain injury...though
ALL of the volunteers thought him special...still... no one came forward
when he developed cancer though they all truly DID care that he was
going to die  He had a good life for his last few months... sitting
on the porch...looking out the window and more petting and love than
even HE wanted.  As is usually the case it was probably harder on me
than him when it came time He stopped eating, it was painful for him
to get his oral meds and even subq pain killers did little... He was
constipated and just hid out all day... The Tumor was forcing his one
eye to protrude and the other to recede... it would have been cruel to
ask him to endure more. A beautiful sweet animal I miss him
terribly...

Curious to see if I find the list active with this submission.

Bob...

Thank you everyone for your replies. I had this set on digest so I
didn't see them.  I am just learning about FeLV, and I have heard
everything from a cat can catch it from walking across a surface a
positive cat touched days ago, to it being very difficult to transmit
 even with direct contact.

My first concern is to protect my existing cat. 2 different vets
advised me against vaccinating him for FeLV because of sarcoma risk
(he is an indoor cat). I'm considering it anyway but haven't made a
decision. One vet told me that the PureVax non-adjuvanted vaccine was
 no better in preventing sarcoma.

I'm considering getting my cat vaccinated anyway but haven't made a
decision.  Keeping them separated inside my small home is not
possible. Ideally I'd like to find somewhere for this stray kitty with
an enclosed outdoor area because she's apparently used to being an
indoor/outdoor cat.  I think she'd do ok indoors as long as she had
 other cats for company.

Sharyl is correct. Just make sure you completely separate them until the
vaccination has taken effect. After she gets the first, she will have to have
the second one no more than 3 weeks later.

let her into my home, she ran straight to my sleeping cat and
snuggled in next to him. I don't think she would be immediately
friendly to other people since it took her awhile to trust me, but
she now purrs and sleeps in my lap.

She would make a wonderful companion for another FeLV+ cat. I
cannot keep her because my cat is FeLV-negative and unvaccinated.

I am lucky to have found a cat rescue to take her in on Monday, but
she will be confined separate from other cats, and this makes me sad
for her. Is there anyone who wants her? I'm in the Bay Area,
California, and could drive her to you. Either before or after
Monday (I'm sure I could get her back from her new lodgings, but
would rather not put her through more than one move).

Re: [Felvtalk] Anyone in or near California want a very sociable companion for their FeLV+ cat?

2012-01-15 Thread Marcia Baronda
Hi Shanda,

I had a positive cat with 3 unvaccinated cats for a year. Of course I had no
idea he was positive. When he became symptomatic I had him and my other 3
tested. The other 3 came back negative after being around him all that time.
They slept together, shared food and water bowls and litter boxes. Of course I
had them all vaccinated at that time. Point is is that you can keep her and
just vac your other cats. (-:

Re: [Felvtalk] Anyone in or near California want a very sociable companion for their FeLV+ cat?

2012-01-15 Thread Shanda Robertson

If you can't mix and I understand your concerns, consider keeping the cats
separated until you can find her a real home.  The most loving cat I ever
had rescued me when she came in from a pine thicket.  She was FeLV+ and had
 a wonderful life.

I just meant the kitten is in safe hands.
She's having a different vet do another in house, then if necessary
the IFA.

2011-03-16 Thread Stray Cat Alliance

If a cat is to be relinquished to any organization please do remember to ask
questions on funding, nonprofit status, how many cats they have, how long they
live, do they separate FIV from FeLV, do they medicate, etc or this cat may end
up in such a good situation where a bathroom is preferred. Good intentions are
great but follow up with questions and an actual visit in person to the
organization is important or what is the point.

Hi - the shelter near me in philadelphia has a very lovey kissing
hugging
10-15 year old senior kitty who just is a total lovebug. His owner died.

Can anyone take him in?

He is on the very very sweet side and my bathroom doesn't seem like it's
good enough for this little lovebug.
As far as I know he's not IFA confirmed but if I take him in the
interim, I will make sure he's confirmed. Even a foster would be
appreciated - he's in the urgent list and I'm surprised they even gave
him this long a chance.

Let me know.

Will do Stray Cat Alliance.

Thank you Beverly for sharing. He needs some help.

Catherine Thank you for reaching out and offering to take him. I sent you an
email last night but maybe it didn't make it, my internet was acting funny
last night and I didn't get a response yet so I'm worried you didn't get it.
Where are you in NYC? Could you send me your info or may I send you the info
to reach out directly to the rescue who is trying to place him. My contact
think that they will allow transport to you. I hope we manage to connect -
maybe you might be interested in a kitten too? Someone sent me an email
today asking for help. I should have a link with image on it soon.

I also just had someone local contact me about a FeLV kitten her friend
pulled from a nyc shelter but her family is flipping out about his felv
status and she has to rehome the cat.

If you want to see the kitty, he's in facebook on the Philly Urgent's page -
photo gallery called urgent cats - he's gray, he's a bit beat up but still
cute and over someone's shoulder. He just takes your heart.

Open to suggestions. I'm not a rescue or non profit. Just involved b/c of
Buddy. :)

Hi Michael,

The problem is that Google maps says it is 1,796 miles and probably at least
1,000 of that is before they get to Nevada. That's why I was looking for
someone experienced in setting up transports, which I am not. I have
someone to drive the first out of what, 18-30ish legs? I haven't heard from
the adopter since all the excitement of getting them rescued from the
shelter (literally HOURS before death) so she may have found another option.
Pilots and Paws is good for short trips (300 miles or so) and we have a
wonderful paid transport company in Austin (they went and got 2 of our cats
after the adopters had a baby and decided the baby was allergic - in New
York State). They are not cheap but do sometimes offer cheaper rates for
rescue if they are going that way anyway.

Re: [Felvtalk] Anyone experienced with transport?

2011-02-20 Thread Kelley Saveika

Re: [Felvtalk] anyone know how to make an Oxygen tank?

2008-12-29 Thread Sharyl
Claudia, I don't know about a home made oxygen tank but know several people in
the heart group have made an oxygen tent.  They wrap a small carrier in plastic
(shower curtain or trash bag) then put the line from the oxygen tank into the
carrier.
Here is the link for the yahoo heart group.

I know there is a yahoo asthma  group but I do not have a link for it.
Hugs for your kitty

Hi,
I'm relatively new to this board.  I'm so glad that something like
this exists for people with fiv cats.  There's some really great advice on
here.  I have a question:  someone told me about home-made Oxygen tanks for
cats.  I have an fiv kitty who also has asthma.  I'm cautious about using
Steroids on her.  One time she ahd a really bad episode, couphing, panting, and
lying on her side.  IT was awful. I rushed her to the vet.  THey of course had
an Oxygen tank.  Anyway,  I'd really appreciate the instructions, if
anyone had them.  Thank you, Claudia

I had one but passed it on to someone else - can't remember who. The
husband of a local rescuer, an engineer, had made it, and she passed
it on to me. He had covered the openings of a carrier with plastic,
and attached a connector that the oxygen tank attached to. Course
oxygen tanks aren't readily available, you have to have a prescription
for them.

A vet can write one. Best to buy one if possible. Getting some
companies to rent one for use for a pet can be difficult. A
question: divers have tanks. Can one be converted for use?

Welders use tanks of oxygen and you can rent or buy them, just don't know if
the oxygen in them would be considered safe to breathe.
