Hi, Jef - I made the same upgrade from 2010 to 2012 without any problems. I
was on WinXP at the time, then migrated to a new box with Win7. The updater
caused no problems. I mostly do horn charts & transcriptions - no lyrics.

Re: [Finale] Finale 2013

2012-05-30 Thread Girard Bowe
Might not be a bad idea to reiterate (on Justin's blog comments) some of the
bug fixes and features we've been requesting. Here's a few off the top of my
head:

In JazzFont, the dot in the dotted eighth rest is too far separated from the
rest. Changing the spacing in Document Options then results in a dot too close
to a quarter rest.

Checking Avoid Collisions of chord symbols can result in some very ugly spacing
issues.

When using the Chord Tool, I have to right-click twice to get an arrow instead
of the chord pointer ( I hope I'm explaining this clearly). Makes it very
clunky when I want to change tools.

Can we get a decent looking letter Z in the JazzFont?

How about a JazzFont version of the Bill Duncan chord library?

I use linked parts, and this sometimes happens. I just select everything,
then Break Multimeasure Rests, then Create Multimeasure Rests. This has
always fixed "missing" measures. I don't know if this will work in extracted
parts.

BTW, linked parts is probably my favorite upgrade improvement. I don't miss

You'll have to create 3 text inserts in the score: page number, part/score
name, and title. For each insert, from the Text menu, select Frame
Attributes. You'll probably want to set up different inserts for the first
page and subsequent pages. If you set this up in your template, you'll save
yourself loads of time for future pieces.

If you want, I can send you a pdf of a horn chart to see what this looks

Re: [Finale] chord chart slash spacing

2012-10-04 Thread Girard Bowe
The reason I don't usually include chords in the music spacing is the very
ugly way it affects notation.

This is the way Don describes it: "My recollection of chord spacing is that
a chord taking up a lot of horizontal space wouldn't 'ride' over the next
item in the measure w/out a chord, but push it to the end of the space taken
by that chord, similar to the way lyrics used to space."

I've created 2 small PNG files to illustrate, but was unsure about sending
them as attachments to the list. Let me know if you'd like to see 'em. I
would love to see this fixed or improved in Fin2013.

Beat spacing (Ctrl-5) may help spacing for slash measures.

Re: [Finale] F2012 HP doesn't apply swing timing to chord playback AND Garritan question

2013-05-02 Thread Girard Bowe
What I do is type the chord name followed by a colon, then the number of the
chord from Chord Suffix Selection. I've got a print-screen of these which I
keep at hand, although by now I have my most-used suffix numbers memorized.
It's a pretty quick process (chord entry), except that it's a pain because
the cursor seems stuck in chord entry mode.

I keep chord playback turned off - ALWAYS! If I need to put my horn parts in
harmonic context, I just enter the chord notes in the rhythm section staff.

I use playback mainly for aural spell-check, so I don't have to be too
particular about a comping style. If necessary, I enter them in rhythm and
it swings (or not!) properly - and I never use a swing value higher than 51.

And has anybody heard anything more atrocious than Finale's on-board
Garritan sounds for brass? Does Garritan JABB sound any better? If so, how
much tweaking is involved? Is there another jazz band sound option which
doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

[Finale] Garritan Sale

Just got in and saw that Garritan is offering 50% off their JABB set for

I don't need a bunch of special effects; I don't need a bunch of obscure
instruments. If I could get decent horn sounds easily, it would be worth $75
to me.

Just wondering if anybody has any insight. And if good sounds are possible
from the resident Garritan setup in Finale 2014, how do I get them?

If anyone has a quick answer, that would be great. I've got till 12 CST to

Re: [Finale] Garritan libraries

2013-12-26 Thread Girard Bowe
I asked this question early this month, and the consensus seemed to be that
at $75 (the sale price then), it was worth it, although few seemed to be
able to replicate the quality of the samples on the Garritan site, or the
samples used by Chuck Israels for his Exploring Jazz Arranging book. I'm
thinking you'd get better results if you were using the Garritan sounds with
a DAW rather than a notation program.

That said, I bit at the $75 price for the Jazz & Big Band collection, and I
found a significant improvement in sounds and volume. Perhaps it is because
I spent a bit more time with the Aria player once I purchased JABB, but in
any case, I'm glad I went for it.

Most of my work is transcribing and arranging for smaller horn sections with
rhythm section, and I use playback as an audible spellcheck, so I don't need
commercial quality playback, but it's nice having something that sounds
closer than the resident Finale Garritan sounds. The trumpet sounds still
suffer most, but are an improvement.

You'll have to decide if it's worth waiting another year to save another $25
- assuming they'll offer another half-price sale next Christmas. I think I'd
still be pleased had I spent $99.

Re: [Finale] F2014 bug: articulations sometimes don't work at some zoom levels

2014-01-18 Thread Girard Bowe
I have experienced this problem, also. The hot key won't work, selecting
single or multiple notes won't work. It's definitely NOT a layer problem for
me. Exiting & restarting Finale sometimes works. Working with different
tools and coming back to articulations has sometimes worked. I work almost
exclusively at zoom level 3 (user defined at 65%). I'll try switching zoom
levels.

Maybe I should start another thread, but has anyone experienced more
frequent crashes with Fin 2014 (I'm using Win7)? Previously, a very rare
occurrence, but now, several times per session. I suspect it's connected to
my simultaneous use of Transcribe!, but this didn't seem to be a problem
before. I'm Ctrl-S-ing much more frequently now, and I really miss the edit
toolbar (no handy save, print, undo, redo buttons).

[Finale] Ossias, I think

2014-04-16 Thread Girard Bowe
I'm trying to create a leadsheet for Benny Golson's Blues on My Mind, and
there are rhythm kicks integral to the song. I wanted to notate them above
the melody line as an ossia, but it seems as if I have to create a separate
ossia for each measure - very clunky. And when I tried to use the rhythm
section staff as the source, the rhythm staff style did not carry over.

Is there an easier way to do this, or am I going to have to create a 2-staff
lead sheet?

Thanks for any help on this!

I thank all who took the time to look at my leadsheet and make suggestions -
this is the type of feedback I was hoping for! I've printed them all, and

For Darcy, regarding the font - I'm using Dom Casual. I was tired of some of
the cartoonish Jazz text characters, but if Dom Cas looks like Comic Sans to
you, my choice wasn't much better! I'm open for suggestions for a text font
which will work with the Jazz music font.

Re: [Finale] Finale 2014B

2014-06-03 Thread Girard Bowe
Despite proclaiming "Numerous crashing situations have been fixed," Finale
2014b is still crashing when I use Transcribe! This happens reliably several
times a sesssion. If it doesn't crash, playback doesn't work when I press
the spacebar and click the score. Restarting Finale fixes this temporarily,
till the next crash.

Maybe they fixed this on the Mac side: "Many audio-related crashes have been
fixed and USB mono input devices no longer cause errors." This fix doesn't
appear on the Windows highlights.

I guess I'll have to wait till Finale 2014c, or pay another $100+ and hope
it's fixed in Finale 2015.

And yes, I did submit this problem (again), but have little hope of
resolution.

[Finale] Creating key sig for ascending melodic minor

2014-07-20 Thread Girard Bowe
I've tried doing this, but with no success. The notes I play with my
keyboard aren't what appear on the staff. Obviously, I've not set this up
properly. I was hoping someone had an easy-to-use quick-guide for this.

I was also hoping that once I had created the key sig I would be able to
transpose it diatonically, so that a pattern I create on the tonic could be
transposed to the other modes of that same scale & key signature. My failed
attempt at creating the key sig precluded me from getting this far. Is what
I'm asking for possible? Will this work if I make the scale keyless, so as
to show accidentals?

Thanks for any help & suggestions!

2014-09-11 Thread Girard Bowe
Hi, Michael - I'm glad to hear that Finale will continue to be improved &
tweaked. I'll reiterate what has been expressed by many in this forum often
over the years: we would love a release that just fixes bugs. The last
several releases have seen a number of users who feel forced to move to a
previous release due to new bugs introduced with the lastest version.

Here's a few of my bugs, and a few wishes as well:

Chords become unchecked in the filter.
Articulation macro doesn't always work.
Selection tool is buggy. Shift-click doesn't always encompass selection.
In Speedy entry, can't always select the last note in the frame.
Spacebar-click doesn't always start playback. Finale must be restarted to
enable playback.
In JazzFont, the augmentation dot on a dotted-eighth rest is spaced too far
to the right.
Finale 2014 shuts down for no apparent reason.
Finale 2014 shuts down randomly when I use Transcribe! software.
There are a few Jazzfont characters which need reworking (eg, the Z looks
like a 2).
(I contacted Customer Support re: the shutdown issues, but nothing they
suggested worked.)
Aria loading is painfully slow.

Not a bug, but. . .
Edit toolbar should be available (Save, Do/Undo, Print, etc). I REALLY miss
this!
"Open most recent document" should be an option for startup action.
It would be nice to have user-defined text inserts.
Adjust Jazzfont Chord Symbols to conform with Roemer-Brandt styling.

There are others who more serious issues than mine - I hope you all will
chime in!

I love the linked parts - that's been my favorite upgrade feature of recent
releases.

Re: [Finale] Anybody think we will ever see any more fixes for F2014?

Michael Good poked his head into our mailing list early last month, but
there's no clue if he heard the responses, so I have copied him on this
email. I would love to have a bug-fix release, and would pay for it.
Several people have requests for new features, but a lot of traffic on this
list concerns bugs. A number of users are using previous Finale versions due
to various issues.

Quote from Michael's email of 7/30:
"As a general rule, I will never be able to offer dates or estimates for
future features, bug fixes, releases, or downloads.
What I can do is acknowledge the issue and work with my colleagues to create
ever better products in the future."

I, for one, don't need a better product - I just want the one I have to work
as it should. I would love to hear that someone in MakeMusic takes our
concerns with bug-fixes seriously.

Here's a repost of my earlier email (a number of bug-fixes were requested in
response to this email):

[Finale] Accidental spacing issue

2014-11-11 Thread Girard Bowe
I'm transcribing Open Sesame, which has a series of dotted
eighths-sixteenths, and the 16th is often accidentalized. The right stem of
the natural sign touches the 16th beam. Making an adjustment in Document

there an easy way to globally fix the spacing of a natural sign? And
doubling the note values and switching to cut time is not an option!

I actually favor top-posting (can you believe there's even a name for that
practice?). But I'm a firm believer in trimming replies so that what remains is
pertinent to your response, but not because of size and bandwidth issues, as
Aaron points out. It certainly makes it easier for digest-folks so they don't
have to wade through multiply repeated headers and re-re-quoted material. Too
much editing can be bad too. I'm on a neighborhood group where some delete

Recreating a template for a new version is a tortuous and torturous task.
Robert Patterson's Scrapbook Setting plugin just doesn't seem to work for

[Finale] Key sig for melodic minor

Ascending, of course. I've tried to create this, but without success. If
anybody has any easy way to do this, or at least a clear explanation, I'd be

Also, assuming this is possible, will it transpose as expected? That is, if
I have a D melodic minor, will it transpose up a major second as E melodic
minor?

And lastly, will it transpose diatonically according to the key signature?
I'd like to be able to select a section, press 6, and have everything be one
step lower in the same key.

Thanks again for any help! I'm trying to create melodic minor exercises for

Re: [Finale] Key sig for melodic minor

2015-03-22 Thread Girard Bowe
I agree! The non-standard key sig would be for various scalar articulation
exercises, adapting some standard trumpet exercises to the melodic minor
mode for improvisational purposes. If the melodic minor key sig worked as
expected, it would obviate a tremendous amount of work in transposing an
exercise into all 7 modes of all 12 keys.

I would probably be the only one to use these, unless one of my Finale list
or trumpet buddies were interested in seeing these.

Thanks Raymond!

Re: [Finale] Preferred method for entering notes/etc into finale 2012

2016-02-17 Thread Girard Bowe
That's funny - I use Speedy also, but I select the value on the QWERTY, then
press the pitch on the midi. Maybe you're not using a midi keyboard? So for
me, it's note value first, then pitch. However, "pitch first" is great for
banjos!

I've gotten to be pretty adept at using 2 keyboards. I also have several
templates set up for different projects. The main ones are jazz/funk band
arrangements (2-5 horns + rhythm), jazz solo transcriptions, and a legit
template.

Linked parts has been a huge time-saver for me - so much better for my
purposes than part extraction.

There are no plug-ins for entering notes that I'm aware of, but there are
number which are very useful once you've entered notes. I seem to use the JW
Plugins every session.

[Finale] Spacing issue for dotted rest

2016-07-27 Thread Girard Bowe

Here is the latest response from MakeMusic regarding my complaint about the
eighth rest dot spacing in JazzFont:

"At the risk of going into semantics, bug fixes are defined as the software not
operating as designed. The augmentation dots appear next to notes and rests at
a distance that is defined in the settings - this works exactly as designed.
Your request is to add functionality that allows this distance to be set
differently for rests than it is for notes."

JW Change has the ability to do this, but it is cumbersome, and I have
forgotten how to use it. I'm hoping someone else will request this "feature"
and that someone will remember the JW Change workaround so that I won't have to
change each instance individually.

After making this complaint for several years to MakeMusic, this is the first
cogent response I've received from them. Now I know the spacing issue is not a
bug!

Thanks for sharing my misery!

GizB
Richmond VA

PS - maybe we can get them to provide a JazzFont "Z" that doesn't look like a 2.

[Finale] Augmentation dot bug redux

2016-08-14 Thread Girard Bowe
For those of you who have been following this (2?!), here is the latest
communique from MakeMusic. This is possibly the best and most cogent
response I've received from MakeMusic in response to bugs & feature
requests. For those not following, this regards the misplacement of the
augmentation dot on eighth rests in Jazzfont, and the inability of the
program to adjust augmentation dot spacing of rests without adjusting
augmentation note spacing.

"Hi Girard,

Thanks for your patience on this.

I want to first apologize for my initial answers to your question - in my
mind, I had compartmentalized the issue down to the simple matter of
Finale's Augmentation Dot settings not differentiating between note-attached
vs rest-attached augmentation dots. After going through this process, it is
clear that there is an Augmentation Dot bug that affects the placement of
the dot relative to the rest (using Jazz font). I stand corrected.

Unfortunately, we do not currently have this on our issues list, but I will
be happy to submit it today. As such, I do not believe that this will be
fixed in Finale v.25.

The separate-but-related issue of whether there should be configuration
settings for the spacing of rest-attached augmentation dots (as opposed to
note-attached) is not something that we have on our radar (to the best of my
knowledge). If this is something that you think should be a feature in
Finale, I would recommend that you submit this on our Feature Request page:

https://makemusic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/200449177-Finale-Fea
ture-Requests

This page is set up to allow our customer base to submit new features for
peer review and discussion. Our Product Management team can then review this
information as a whole for each feature request, and determine an
appropriate disposition.

I am sorry that I don't have better news for you regarding this, but I hope
this information helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or
concerns about this.

Once again, my sincere apologies for misconstruing your initial question. I
do hope that we are able to fix this issue in an upcoming release."

Pretty sure the Maria Schneider book is in JazzFont. I don't care for B'way
Copyist, either. I use JazzFont for notation and Dom Casual for text & chords.
There are some problems with JazzFont, and supposedly MakeMusic (or whatever)
is looking at an alternative; they can't alter the JF, probably for proprietary

Re: [Finale] Finale 2012 Printing parts from a PDF file

2017-12-19 Thread Girard Bowe
Yes. I use CutePDF Writer. You just send your files to it as you would a
printer. Unfortunately, Finale appends an "X" to each filename. It's a known
issue, but . . . .

http://www.cutepdf.com/

You can export to pdf in Finale, but you have to do each file individually,
and rename it if you want the partname included in the filename. I submitted
a request to make "export to pdf" function as the printer function does
(selection of multiple files, partname included). I was told it was a good
idea. . . .

When I display the score in concert pitch the notes I enter return a single
note sound, but if I display my score in transposed pitch (score showing
different key signatures) Finale and my MIDI plays 2 notes at a time that are a

Re: [Finale] Finale 26 -- Opinions?

2018-10-11 Thread Girard Bowe
Here is my response to a thread I started on the Finale Forum
regarding the spacing of the eighth-rest dot in JazzFont:

"Well, here it is, 2 years since my post on this thread, and 11 years since
Christopher Smith reported this bug, and with yet another new release, this
bug remains. Finale 26 is an extremely thin improvement, and woefully short
in bug fixes. I wish I could get my money back. I think this will be my last
Finale upgrade. Also, where is the promised alternative to JazzFont, which
has some truly ugly characters? Is there a reason there is no shortcut to
the Jazz character map in the Help dropdown menu? Is there any improvement
to creating mix-font enclosures? Does ANYBODY from Finale care?"

I'm curious what bug fixes have been made that users on this list have found
in Finale 26, and what bug fixes you're still waiting for.

I think you’d want the articulation font as well.

There are jazz articulations that look appropriate with Maestro. Using Jazz
font articulations with Maestro looks awful and that discrepancy was why Bill
made the articulations (for Greg Hamilton and me).

There’s lots in the package Nick sells you don’t normally need, but I’d be
unhappy to lose the things mentioned above and the use of the chord font for
slashes and rhythmic notation.

Jazz charts look much better with them.

[Finale] Garritan-Aria sounds

Can someone please point me to a resource to explain how Garritan works with
Aria, and how best to utilize them? I've used playback for a spell-check

Making changes in Score Manager and VST banks is confusing. For example,
changing Trumpet Plr 1 to Trumpet KS in VST Banks doesn't seem to affect
Score Manager.

When I want to assign sounds, where should I start - score manager or VST
Banks & Effects? Should I ever reassign sounds from the MIDI menu? Is there
a way to universally change libraries, say from Garritan JABB3 to Garritan

Lastly, is there a way to change score order in Score Manager-Instrument
