I think with FM using those hex codes is more reliable than pasting
characters into the Find/Change dialog or using the Windows
Alt-numeric keypad sequences.

In FM10, at least, you have to set each .fm file individually. You can
do that with one command: open the book file, select all files, bring
up the PDF options, set job options.
Did that setting used to be at the book level? I don't remember having
had to do that in FM8 and earlier.

It seems like in FM10, each .fm file has its own PDF settings. I had
the same confusion about why my changes weren't being saved until I
figured out I had to select all files in the book and then set the
options.

In my observation, with FM10, when the focus is on a book file and I
select Format > Document > PDF Setup, the "Include Paragraphs" and
"Don't Include" lists on both the Bookmarks and Tags tabs include all
tags from all .fm files, regardless of which file(s) I currently have
selected in the book.
I got nowhere when I was trying to understand how to create an FM10
project using XML source. Everything I found either seemed to be out
of date or was aimed at experienced users.

I noticed that just yesterday in FM10. Eventually I started watching the
page numbers and manually saving and going on to the next file when it
restarted.
Seems like a bug to me, as does FM's long-standing tendency to change the
search scope from Book to Document on its own.

Yes, I think that's true. If you just click buttons in the Find /
Replace box it doesn't loop.
I wish I had a copy of FM6 or 7 around to compare the old behavior.

I think that's more work than should be necessary, I'd try copying in
Excel, paste special in Word, copy, and paste in FrameMaker,
experimenting with various choices (HTML, RTF) when pasting in Word.

Usually my selected printer is Adobe PDF since the main thing I do
with FrameMaker is generate PDFs. I printed some redrafted pages
today, so I selected a LaserJet. I forgot to change back to Adobe PDF,
and the next time I updated the book, I got an error that FrameMaker
was recreating the TOC. The
