Except for "message URL" the mailto link is standard stuff, nothing
specific to FrameMaker. There are lots of tutorials, references, etc.

In PDF you find the file information in the PDF document properties.

I don't think you can. FrameMaker's multichannel output is a subset of
RoboHelp features. RoboHelp has Metadata properties for PDF output but
not for HTML output.

Our customer network flags emails coming from outside with a warning banner to
those of us inside the network. They implemented this a few months ago. I
thought I had deleted all of that when replying back to each of you, but
apparently I don’t see all of it, so please accept my apologies.

As Craig said, in the future I will just cut or copy and paste the previous
comment into a new email and hopefully that will take care of the issue.

Thank you for letting me know!

[Framers] Please change subject line for digest posts and trim them

2020-04-09 Thread Carol J. Elkins
Framers, remember that when you are on digest and respond to a post,
you must change the subject line and also trim out all of the
original digest messages, leaving only a sentence or two of the
message that you are replying to. When someone forgets to do this,
then the error perpetuates as more messages contain the wrong subject
and are littered with the original digest content (as shown below).
Please help by remembering to make these changes.

Yes, the company user group meetings bring back memories! In 1994, I
started doing tech support for a Silicon Valley FrameMaker reseller. Our
customers comprised almost all of the then major tech companies. I used to
visit a few customer sites regularly, to sit in on user groups, or to hold
one-on-one problem-solving sessions.

The company's principals developed, then sold off, the first UNIX
license-management software, which enabled Frame Technology to sell FM with
more-affordable floating licenses. They also developed a table-calculation
add-on tool for FrameMaker tables, for FM3 on UNIX. Adobe declined their
offer to sell licensing rights when they bought Frame Technology, because
they claimed they intended to build their own table calculator into a
future release.

Don't regret those user groups that may seem lost; this and other online
FrameMaker forums that date back to the dawn of the internet, are the
evolved versions of those early UGs.

The first feature FM I saw that blew me away was the built-in screenshot
option on UNIX FM3 in 1989!

Hi, you could also try my WS Utilities plugin, which has a customizable
shrinkwrap function to replace the native shortcut. It also includes

fully-functional shareware where some functions will bug you

When I use the shrinkwrap shortcut, my anchored frames change to At
Insertion Point, which hoses their position on the page. I seem to
recall
that there was a way to customize the shortcut so it would leave the
Anchoring Position value unchanged.

If I'm not mis-remembering, what is the method?

Thanks!

[Framers] subject matter expertise Re: OFF TOPIC, Translation Need.

2017-07-28 Thread Craig Ede
I know that the translation service I worked for had a certification program
that would certify certain translators only for specific types of subject
matter. So a 'linguist" (as they called them) in a specific language might be
certified to translate marketing materials, but not certified to translate
technical manuals for biomedical devices.

Since there is no "standard" XML file, it is difficult to have a ready-made
conversion tool. If you send me a small before/after sample, I will be glad
to see what can be done. Thanks.

I'm often sent XML files that I need to first save as a tab-delimited TXT
file before importing into Frame to convert to a table.

Does anyone know of a software that may be able to batch convert XML to
tab-delimited TXT files?

[Framers] Subject: Need FrameMaker Language Help

2016-04-05 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Rick,

I’m not sure what you’re looking for, but if you edit the EDD and add the
Language element (in PropertiesFont) you get the list of available languages as
element to insert. No need to type manually.
Update the EDD to current version (in your case FM11) to get the corresponding
supported languages. For FM2015 the list will include arabic, hebrew, farsi,
etc..

In MIF, all languages are written out in English. So if you need to check the
correct language code, mark a paragraph with that language, save as MIF and
read out what is written for Language.

All other use of language coding (for example to use in the xml:lang attribute)
is actually arbitrary and subject to what your client needs to confirm to.

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

[Framers] Subject: Special Characters in Variables

2016-02-07 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hello Art,

just typing a dash works for me. Or are you looking for other special
characters?

The contents of a variable should be unicode. Best approach for special
characters (in any language) would be to type the text in a Unicode text
editor, then copy and past it into the variable definition box.

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

2015-01-08 Thread Celine Deguire
Hello Carolyn

Unfortunately, the ATagLineBreak=No did not work for the img tags.

Thanks

Celine Deguire wrote on 1/6/2015 11:29 AM:
 Hello

From Framemaker 11 on Windows 7, for conversion to HTML then later to
XHTML
(for use with MS Helpviewer), the img src definitions are broken onto two
lines where images are embedded in sentences. Does anyone know how to
force
the img src definition to stay on one line? The following example line
shows the break after the img portion of the definition where the
remainder of the definition is on the next line.

 p class=Bodya name=Xai1131533/aFor function block instances
having hidden pins, the Display All Pins button img
 src=images/ldr_dar.gif alt=, enables showing all pins./p

I have had no success using the NoWrap=Yes property in the [HTMLOptions]
section of the Mif2Htm.ini file, reading through the Mif2Go user guide for
other possibilities, and searching online for others having faced this
 problem.

Are you saying that for all instances of img src= in the output, src=
always
starts a new line, regardless of whether what follows it would fit on the
same
line in whatever text viewer you are using to examine the HTML?

If so, I would try ATagLineBreak=No, even though it's documented (slightly
incorrectly) only for the a tag. Won't affect how the HTML is rendered,
only
how it looks when viewed as text.

I have basically found those chat things for customer service to
be excruciating from pretty much ANY company that I try.
The fact that they are physically just so *slow* is bad enough
(perhaps taking tranquilisers before logging slow your mind to the

forced to stick to a script and when you try to engage them outside

2014-06-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
Adobe Technical Communications Suite 5 includes FrameMaker 12,
RoboHelp 11, Acrobat XI, and Captivate 7. Also Presenter 9, but most
people require PowerPoint so that's not adding much value. You can get
a 30-day free trial to check it out.

Do not import your FrameMaker book(s) into RoboHelp. Link them
instead. I created a cheat sheet and sample project for doing that as
it was not well documented:

http://lauriston.com/fm10_link_to_rh9.zip

I believe you can configure RoboHelp to use the same tags and CSH
header file you've been using for WebWorks.

If you?re already happy with authoring in FM, I?d stick with it. Then I
would get the Tech Comm Suite to produce your EPUB output and/or HTML5
responsive help that would work for tablets too ( look much better than an
EPUB). Don?t get too suckered in by FM12?s claims that you can publish
straight out of FM ? the level of control over output is still being worked
on. Try the trial version first on a non-production machine to test it out.

2014-06-12 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
TCS is a bundle of products that have special integrations to work together
over the standalone versions of the software. The lineup keeps changing with
each release, but TCS5 has FM12, RH11, Captivate 7, Presenter 9, Acrobat Pro XI
– prior versions have included Photoshop and Illustrator.

Because I still have to produce PDFs, I use FM for all my content and then
import it into RH for producing WebHelp. Very little fiddling needed.

Subject: TCS 5 no box version sold

2014-02-20 Thread David Boss
I keep all downloaded software and updates on a separate hard drive in my
desktop system and a backup on an external hard drive that I can also use
with my laptop. More convenient and faster to load than a DVD.

Actually I have 3 drives in my desktop system -- a 250GB SSD that holds my
OS and software, a 1TB hard drive that holds active work files, and a 3TB
hard drive that holds my photos, work archive, and software archive.

The laptop doesn't have a DVD drive so using an external hard drive makes
more sense anyway (Acer V5-171, really a cross between laptop, netbook and
ultrabook -- 11.6 screen, i5 processor, 8GB RAM, replaceable 500GB hard
drive, removable battery).

Subject: RE: OT: Adobe Acrobat Pro and Adobe Reader on same client

2014-01-23 Thread Davis, David
I'd echo Syed's point here -
We Tech Pubs folk have a habit of repeating something Dov Isaac's said over a
decade ago like it's some kind of holy writ,
but 10 computer years is about a century in real years ;) Things may well (and
certainly ought to) have changed since then.

I'd like to see a list of the actual DLLs and registry entries and blah blah
that are involved before accepting that Adobe still haven't fixed this.
(lol but then again, there are so many corners of FrameMaker that Adobe haven't
fixed since they ported it off the NeXT, so who am I trying to kid... ;) )

The standard solution for this kind of issue is to have a virtual machine on
which to test your customer experience.

If you have Windows 8, it comes with Microsoft HyperV built in, you can
create a virtual machine with a few clicks, install Reader in it, and play away
to your hearts content. (Shock news: Windows 8 actually does have some useful
new features in it, see? :) )
Another handy free virtual machine is Oracle's www.virtualbox.org
Give one of these a try and never mess up your precious working environment
ever again!

I guess my reaction is that the information from Dov at that link you found is
from 2004 - almost ten years ago... on Windows 98 and Windows XP systems
apparently, etc.

The results may be quite different today perhaps? Or maybe it is my approach of
always installing Acrobat after Reader ...

shrug Works for me (and I ain't boasting ... merely reporting. :) :))

Guys, you keep emphasizing that I used a quote of Dov's from 10 years
ago-- and I did (9 years ago, actually). But I also included one other
quote and a link to third message in the same post. These were from
times more recent. One was from 2010, which was only one version back in
Acrobat. I'd call that a recent quote. I'm also sure I've seen Dov say
similar later, I just couldn't quickly find a quote to include.

Anyway, do what you want regarding mixing Acrobat and Reader, but it's
not really fair to grab the oldest quote of three and claim it makes all
the advice old.

2014-01-23 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Mike, point taken. Dr. Reng said the same thing too.

Perhaps ... a different question that may be more interesting:

Do people here feel that it is necessary to check a PDF in a Reader
only environment if that PDF looks fine in Acrobat?

Because, I have yet to see one of my files pass Acrobat rendering and fail to
show in Reader. (In my approach, both programs would use the same available
fonts though.)

If I stop doing that final check, it would just be a bit simpler final process
for me. BTW, with my approach, both programs would still find the same fonts
available, so missing fonts is effectively not something I check anyway! I just
avoid it by having Acrobat embed the fonts as needed.

I don't normally feel it is necessary. My understanding has always been
that Reader is basically the viewing portion of Acrobat. So if it
doesn't look right in one, it won't look right in the other. I see
Acrobat as Reader, plus a bunch of other features that we have to pay
for. I don't know if that's accurate, but it's my impression.

Having said that, there are a few times that I've found it necessary to
check a file in Reader (on a separate computer). I've never seen any
differences in _appearance_ (assuming that I remembered to embed all
fonts, which I always do because I have my joboptions set to do so by
default), but I have seen problems in functionality. Examples include
forms that didn't work in Reader, but did work in Acrobat, because I had
some setting wrong. Or the review feature not working-- again, because
it wasn't set up right beforehand. So I may check a form in Reader, or a
PDF being sent out for review.

Subject: Re: Character Tag As Is setting--isn't

2013-11-20 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Try this one: while you're in the character designer press Shift+F8.

All values will be set to As Is. You can modify the format and apply - or
update all.

But Matt is right: when you first click 'Apply', all current values of the
selected text will be shown and if you next click 'update all' , these values
will be stored. So the correct order of working is, even with text selected,
press Shift+F8, make only the necessary changes and click 'Update All', not
apply.

You can test this by selecting some text, apply a character format, press
Shift+F8 and then without modifying choose 'Update All'. Next time you apply
the same format nothing happens: all is set to as is.

But I second Matts workflow tip: click outside the text flow to create or
modify character tags. Only then you'll be sure to get what you want.

As promised in an earlier post to the framers list, here are some concerns I
have about the FM 11 codeview mode. I am also copying this to

missing something easy that would solve these issues. I would be happy to be

---I
find myself working in the FM11 codeview mode a lot and have the following
complaints: I wish FM would leave my indenting alone and not collapse
everything (or some things).I wish FM would not added navtitles and metadata
tags that I don't need. This seems to happen when I save after returning to the
WYSIWYG view (which I try not to do for that reason). The codeview interface
often lacks a scroll bar when you enter it. Hitting the minimized and then
maximize window icons gets them, but that should be fixed so you don't have to
do that.
One more trying aspect of the current implementation: Since I am converting
files to DITA I often work with a non-structured file open to consult or
sometimes cut-and-paste from. This file disappears when I move to codeview,
which makes sense since it does not have a structure with text to view.
Returning to WYSIWYG mode always returns the file to a docked tab, so I have to
reposition it to the other monitor again and again. Can't these windows just be
left where they were placed? Enough for now. Craig Ede

I've had far fewer problems with FM10 once I gave up on rearranging
windows and dialog boxes, though that means I waste a lot of time
collapsing dialog boxes to show the full paragraph tag list.

Adobe's profound incompetence is I think best shown by their redoing
the UI but not changing the fixed-size dialogs such as the
cross-reference one.

Hi Rob,
Sorry for your problems with the upgrade--I haven't experienced those,
because we're happy enough to just Save As PDF for the majority of our
books. (I haven't printed to .ps since Adobe fixed the PDF issue a
couple years back...)
I'm writing again just to emphasize that my own problem wasn't really an
upgrade failure, just a UBD problem (User Brain Dead). I've gotten used
to double-clicking in a WinZip window to open files so I never save
locally anymore, and just didn't snap duh that I should do so for an
executable...
Again, though, Adobe deserves some thanks, both to Kapil Verma, as you
mentioned, and also to Vikram in TCS Support who was kind enough to
contact me and get me sorted out.
Hope you can solve your issues as quickly and easily!

To Gay:
My sympathies on the upgrade failure.
The first problem that we were not notified automatically when using the
check for updates from FrameMaker itself.
If it was not for this list I would never have known about the update.
Thank you, Kapil Verma. Having said that I did successfully install the
update.
The new wrinkle in Winodows 7 was that two Adobe services have to be
disabled or suspended.
RS03 Middle tier service
and
RS03 Server service
The second thing I did was to disable my Norton antivirus for one hour.
Everything else was shut down.
I then installed the update with no problem.

However, the update does not fix all the big problems with FM11 book
functions.
Yes it does print to ps.
However, over 1,000 pages print to ps was as unstable as before the
update.

FrameMaker 11 is a huge step forward in terms of integration with other
TCS4, but FrameMaker 11.1must be able to perform its core book
functions.
Every hardcopy publisher I know must have perfect book print functions.
I would also like to make a distinction between crashes, when FM falls
over and gives a message and the more dangerous hang where one saves
the book and all the files and the blue circles keeps on turning without
saving.
Our attempts to have a real progress bar have come to naught. So FM11
does not print big books to ps and hangs while saving.
Anyone know where are the sample scripts or instructions not in the help
file for sure.
As ever

Subject: FrameMaker 11.1 Update: some notes

I would also like to make a distinction between "crashes", when FM falls
over and gives a message and the more dangerous "hang" where one saves
the book and all the files and the blue circles keeps on turning without
saving.
Our attempts to have a real progress bar have come to naught. So FM11
does not print big books to ps and hangs while saving.
Anyone know where are the sample scripts or instructions not in the help
file for sure.
As ever

Subject: Re: Tables on spreads

2012-05-21 Thread Cathy Giddens
I've struggled with this same problem, for a table that spans the double
spread, and runs over 10 double pages. I had split the tables into one table
for each page, but this was painful, ie, 20 tables in all.

I have just recently set these up as two FM Tables, one for left page content
and one for right page content. I have set up a master page for the right page
with Flow tag B, the left hand table goes into Flow tag A, and the right hand
table goes into Flow tag B.

I use several duplicate Paragraph Tags for the right side, with the same font
and spacing as the left, so that the empty paragraphs at heading/sub-heading
rows on the right hand pages have the same attributes/row height, but don't end
up in the TOC, eg, Heading1PlaceHolder.

This might not work with how you manage your table content, but having just
worked it through successfully, and not seeing anyone else suggesting it, I
thought it might be worth putting up to the list.

2011-12-23 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel
Hi Doug,

Shouldn't it be F:Figure n+ to continue numbering (you mention F:Figure
n+1)?

The 'continue numbering' option should be set from within the book file, not
on individual chapter files. In the book select the chapters and choose
Format-Document-Numbering. Then, in the tab Paragraph set 'Continue
numbering ..' . Don't choose the 'Read from file' option here. Then update
the book (don't forget!).

Also, check if there's another paragraph format using the F: label for
numbering that resets the n to 1. The title may be? Note that a label
identifys an independent numbering sequence, so only use it for one type of
format. If you use the same label for different formats a more complex
numbering set up is needed (with more counters).

Hi, guys!

I am befuddled by the inability to get rid of some old change bars in a
document. It was created before our current authors. We now work in a
combination of Frame 7 and 8, depending on the machine.

In three places there are change bars appearing in the margin that shouldn't be
there. I have checked the paragraph designer, the character designer, and
FormatStyleChange Bar. I have tried selecting all of the surrounding text,
applying a change bar, and then removing - only to still have my phantom one
remain. I have verified that it is not a piece of conditional text that is
hidden being the culprit.

Any ideas on how to find and get rid of whatever is holding them?

Thanks!

Trouble with xrefs (sending again with correct subject line!)

2010-09-22 Thread Rebecca . L . Frasure
I have FM 9.0p255, Windows XP.

We are having a problem with cross-references. For some reason, our cross
references are adding quote marks around the paratext. Editing the xref
definition doesn't work, Importing xrefs from another manual doesn't work.
It's just ignoring us.
My coworker is getting very frustrated. Thanks very much for any help!

At the risk of belaboring the obvious: After removing the quotes from the
definition (in the Edit Cross-Reference dialog and clicking Done, the Update
Cross-References dialog appears. If you click Cancel instead of Update, and
then click Done in the Cross-Reference dialog, the xrefs in your doc remain
unchanged even though the format definition has changed. Could this be what
happened? If so, importing Cross-Reference formats from the current file should
fix it.

When you imported from another manual, did you confirm that the specific file
in that manual from which you imported had the correct definition? Did you
import to all the files in the current book?

If those are both dead ends, I'd try creating a new xref format defined as you
want it to look and doing some testing with it.

I'm using FM 7.2 right now (so some of the details above may not be exact), but
I've used FM 9 enough to be fairly confident that xref formats work properly.
It's hard to believe that some recent update would have broken this
functionality so badly ...

Trouble with xrefs (sending again with correct subject line!)

2010-09-22 Thread rebecca.l.fras...@aphis.usda.gov

Sigh. I've developed the bad habit of forgetting the closing parenthesis from
time to time. This should have begun:

Solved:

I had edited my maker.ini file, but not realised that Wordpad is not the best
tool for the job - it destroyed the file's UTF-8 format, which was causing my
problems.

Restored from a backup, and everything is hunky-dory again.

So, when editing maker.ini, ensure you use something like Notepad, that doesn't
change file types.

RE: Subject: Flowing in Structured FrameMaker

2009-12-09 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hello Brenda,

In structured FrameMaker, how do I control the flow of the data so that I
can import all 3 xml files into the same FrameMaker template and automate it
so that the back page data flows into the correct back page master page?

You should be able to control Master page usage by using attributes and the
'Apply Master page' table on the reference page.

First, in your XML, set an attribute (on a top level element) to identify
the different XML versions. Then create a row in the Master Page Table on
your reference page that links the back page data (should be a recognizable
element that starts the back page data) start element (or, depending on how
your template is organized, paragraph format) to the back page Master Page.
When you do this for each XML version, in the 'context' column you can add
the attribute value (same syntax as used in EDD) to identify the proper
version of your XML and in the Master Page column set the name of the
corresponding back page Master Page.

2009-06-16 Thread Syed.Hosain
Hi, all.

I am using FrameMaker 8 on a Windows Vista system.

How can I insert a horizontal range brace character or graphic like
the ones used in figure 3-4 on page 23 of this paper:

h t t p : / / w w w . c d g . o r g / resources / white_papers /
MEID_EUIMID_Migration . p d f

(All these e-mails from me to the list are bouncing. I assume they are
not going through due to the above URL. I will try again with many
spaces inserted. Please remove them to get to the file.)

The figure uses downward (and one upward) pointing brace-like range
delimiters that I'd like to do in a similar way for some diagrams I am
working. And to be able to simply and easily stretch them horizontally
to grow and shrink them as needed for other ranges. Without messing up
the quality of the curves at each end - i.e., make them look similar.

I can do everything else in that figure pretty easily, but I am stumped
on this particular item! I thought about trying to use the Equation
editor (did not see anything useful), or rotating a { text box (looked
messy when stretched), but these attempts did not work. The graphics
drawing tools just seem too limited for this ...

I am trying to avoid any tools outside FrameMaker to achieve this
result, by the way.

Thoughts? How have other people done anything similar?

Thanks in advance,

Z

2009-06-16 Thread Bodvar Bjorgvinsson
Syed,

I suspect this figure is made in TeX/LaTeX or some other application
using a special font for this purpose. You might probably find a font
somewhere but most likely at a cost.

TeX/LaTeX comes for free as in beer and as in speech, including a lot of fonts.

So, not much help here. :-(

Hi, all.

I am using FrameMaker 8 on a Windows Vista system.

How can I insert a "horizontal range brace" character or graphic like

"h t t p : / / w w w . c d g . o r g / resources / white_papers /

The figure uses downward (and one upward) pointing brace-like "range

to grow and shrink them as needed for other ranges. Without messing up

I can do everything else in that figure pretty easily, but I am stumped
on this particular item! I thought about trying to use the Equation
editor (did not see anything useful), or rotating a "{" text box (looked
messy when stretched), but these attempts did not work. The graphics
drawing tools just seem too limited for this ...

I am trying to avoid any tools outside FrameMaker to achieve this
result, by the way.

Thoughts? How have other people done anything similar?

Thanks in advance,

Z

Hi everyone,

[Sent this yesterday from Thunderbird where it went through blank...]

I'm at frame 7.0p578 and I'm having an issue with numbered lists and text
flows.

I have a document with two flows, A B, in parallel on a page. In flow A,
my numbered lists sequence fine. It is set to AutoConnect. With flow B,
which appears to be identically set up, my numbered lists restart on every
page. I've tried adjusting the master page, the frames individually,
auto-connect on and off, and nothing seems to work. From the guide and a few
pages out there on Google, it would appear that those are the only variables
I should have to worry about.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

thanks,

What do you mean by a "text line object"?

I've seen this before. It was caused by an empty Text Line object that is
using the character format you are trying to change or delete. You have to
find the Text Line object and delete it then you can change or delete the
character form.

Thanks, David. Unfortunately that didn't work. The new tag retained the
'f:*footnote ref' override. 'footnote ref' doesn't appear in the list of
character tags - I've no idea where it came from. I tried adding it as a
ch tag, then deleting it - that had no effect either.

2009-03-12 Thread Daniel Frankham
I'm not sure I fully understand the problem. I presume the Para f:* footnote
ref" isn't what I would call a tag, but a style?

This may be worth a try:

Select all of one of the errant paragraphs.
Open the character designer dialog (Format/Characters/Designer)
Change Character Tag to Default Paragraph Font (or whatever is appropriate
for your paragraph).
De-select the superscript check-box and click Apply.

(I applied a footnote character format to a whole paragraph of text in one
of my documents, and when I tried to change it back to normal paragraph text
it retained the footnote formatting until I did the above. It needed to be
manually told that it shouldn't be a superscript any more.)

Alternatively, the easiest solution may be to copy the text to a text
editor, delete the text from your document, and paste it back in from the
text editor.

Some paragraphs in a document I inherited have 'Para f:*footnote ref' as a
paragraph tag. I have been unable to remove the reference to 'f:*footnote ref.'
I've tried retagging with the correct tag, selecting the text and applying
Default Font - I've found nothing that works. What else should I try?

Hi Chris,

That's not a paragraph tag. The "f:" indicates it's a character tag.
The asterisk means it's an override, which is to say the format is not
in the Character Tag catalog, though the definition with the name
"footnote ref" does exist in the document.

I don't know why it does not go away when you select the text and apply
Default Pgf Font -- is it possible that the char tag is applied to the
entire paragraph, thus overriding the pgf tag's own definition with a
non-catalog definition? Try selecting the entire pgf including pilcrow
and applying the pgf tag and then Default Pgf Font.

Chris,
Apply a different tag to the selected text and then retag it with Para, this
will remove the errant footnote ref Character Tag.
