Well, in another tech writing list we were discussing End of Life and End of Support. I would definitely think that that version of frame has reached those, so I guess Adobe would just be happy to hear that it still works. Re: [Framers] Error Message Explanation
That's what I've been telling you. You're using 5.5.6, a release that's 23 years old this month. Of course it can't import a lot of formats created later. Which includes variants of formats such as .jpg, .gif, .bmp that did exist back then. I would not expect Adobe to make any statements about software that old. Re: [Framers] Error Message Explanation (Robert Lauriston); Framers Digest, Vol 187, Issue 16
FM 5.5.6 was released in November 1998. Do you have some old FrameMaker projects with image files of the same vintage? If so, see if you can reproduce the import error with any of them. If you can't, that strongly suggests that you're trying to import images in updated formats that 5.5.6 doesn't recognize. Another test would be to open one of the a problem images in Paint or whatever, save it as a legacy format such as 16-bit .bmp, and see if FM can import that. Re: [Framers] Error Message Explanation (Robert Lauriston); Framers Digest, Vol 187, Issue 16
I would open and save the jpg in a number of graphics programs and see if one of them saves the jpg in a way that allows it to be imported. I've never had trouble importing jpgs in FrameMaker in 5.5.6 unless there was actually something wrong with the file (and I worked with that version a very long time). If it's failing with all jpgs, it's possible that something in your installation has been corrupted, so you might try a re-install. Thank you Robert for your response. With respect to you questions: 1. I have tried import by copy and by reference, both with the same (failing) result. 2. Indeed a frame is created automatically. I hadn't known that. Doing so does not change my results. 3. I am running Windows 2000, 5.00.2195 on a VirtualBox virtual machine. 4. I am running FrameMaker 5.5.6.p145. Spencer - I've never had issues opening files from older versions in the current version. For grins, I just opened a 1994 file that was in v3, and it opened fine. You could install a 30-day trial of the current version (16, aka 2020) to confirm that it works and see if the .jpeg import error goes away. [Framers] SOLVED: Publish error message
OK, I figured out the problem. I have a program that I wrote called SmartLauncher that automatically launches the correct version of FrameMaker when you double click on a .fm file. I wrote this because I work with clients with various FrameMaker versions so I have 6 versions of FrameMaker installed on my computer. So my .fm, .book, and .mif file associations were changed to point to the SmartLauncher program. Apparently, this causes problems with the Publish feature. When I change the file associations back to FrameMaker and restart FrameMaker, Publish works. Structured FrameMaker 11 Console Font Error Message Displays when postscripting and creating PDFs
In my office we are using Structured FrameMaker 11 in a Windows 7 environment. A co-worker is encountering an error message when creating postscript files from Structured FrameMaker 11 files to send to the printer. The FrameMaker console displays the following message: The "Times" Font is not available. It will be replaced by "Times New Roman". This error message does not display when the FrameMaker template is opened, or when the xml file that is imported into the FrameMaker template is imported. I created a MIF file of the FM11 template and neither Times or Times New Roman is included in the template. The problem seems to occur when postscripts or PDFs are created. I noticed the error message displaying on my computer when I created a PDF with registration marks. When I viewed the pdf there is file information that appears at the top of the PDf near the registration marks that includes the file name, date, and time. This information appears as Times New Roman. When the co-worker created a PDf without using registration marks, the font error message still displayed. I added the following line of code to my maker.ini file: Times, *, *, *=Times New Roman, *, *, * and this appears to have eliminated the font error message from displaying. I'd like to determine where this Times font or the reference to times exists so that I can eliminate it altogether. Times does not appear to be in the FrameMaker templates, the EDD, or the read/write Rules. Is there a systems file that FM11 launches when creating postscripts and PDFs that might contain code that references "Times" instead of "Times New Roman"? Any help with resolving this will be appreciated. RE: Converting Older Frame Files to Frame 10: Cannot Lock File Error Message
Usually, files brought in (copied) from a CD are set to read-only by Windows (including recent versions - not just WinNT). What you've > described may well have nothing to do with FM. Another thing that occurs to me is that you may have the "network file locking" feature turned on in FrameMaker, but are unable (or not allowed) to create the .lck files in the same directory as the FM files. This would explain why FrameMaker is complaining about being unable to *lock* the file and warning you that someone else might be making changes at the same time. Look in the Preferences property sheet to see if network file locking is enabled, and try disabling it if it is currently enabled. -Fred Ridder -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... -Fred Ridder ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Converting Older Frame Files to Frame 10: Cannot Lock File Error Message
Thanks, Harro. Unlocking the read-only FrameMaker file did the trick. Curious that in 15 years of using Frame, I hadn't encountered a locked Frame file. Now that I know about it, I see this question has been answered a few times before. *** Todd Bersley From: Harro de Jong To: "todd.bersley at teradyne.com" , "framers at lists.frameusers.com" Date: 06/11/2013 06:05 AM Subject:RE: Converting Older Frame Files to Frame 10: Cannot Lock File Error Message You may have two problems: 1. file permissions in Windows 2. file set as read-only in FrameMaker. You've solved 1. for 2. the symptoms are missing menu items (you can't save or edit, and the only menus shown are File, Edit, Navigation, Window, Help). To unlock a file, type Esc Flk (note the uppercase F, lowercase L, lowercase K). Value of Separation out of range error message on opening a .mif
Dear Framers: I have searched the archives of this list as I know I have asked this question before. What does "Value of Separation out of range" mean? I have a book with about 15 chapters with many graphics (every one referenced) However, several but not all of the non generated chapters will not distill, they crash at the same point. I have gone into the saved mif file with the handy mif browser, but cannot see what I am doing wrong. The mif looks good, but when I open the mif in FM, it imports OK, but the console is crowded with these "Value of Separation out of range" messages. I know I have done something dumb, but I cannot remember what I should be looking at: cross-refs, text, end of page are all candidates. What I need is a voodoo guide to these error messages. I wish FM would have a preflight option. Does anyone remember PageMaker? I am on a deadline (passed) so relief is eagerly sought. FM 9.0p255 unstructured PC 4 gigs ram 3TB Rob Shell

Java error Message when importing xml to frameMaker 8
This is just a guess, but it sounds like Frame can't find the appropriate installation of the JRE. You might check your environment variables to see where the JAVA variable (I think that's it) is pointing to. If you're comfortable in the registry, you could also check the key noted below to see where it is pointing. Also, most obviously, check to make sure you do actually have an instance of java.dll in the correct location. If you're comfortable in the registry, you could also check the key noted below to see where it is pointing. Also, most obviously, check to make sure you do actually have an instance of java.dll in the correct location. FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file
Hello, I have had similar problems with documents, importing PNG graphics that were colour depth of 24 bit or 32bit RGB - which would occasionally give your error message, but most often would often silently crash FrameMaker! If my memory serves me well, I think the problematic PNG files had been created by Adobe Illustrator. As the graphics were grayscale, I simply reduced the palette to 8 bit, and saved as PNG. My favourite [Windows] application for simple changes to graphics has to be Irfanview - small, simple, and doesn't even need to be installed. Can you import the same file into another application? Try saving the png as a jpg and importing that. Any other pngs you have problems with? I think Art is on the right track for a solution. Can you import the same file into another application? Try saving the png as a jpg and importing that. Any other pngs you have problems with? RE: FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file
I think Art is on the right track for a solution. I seem to recall some previous discussions of some version(s) of FM having a problem with one specific PNG color depth option, and the solution was to resave the graphic from an image editor. For this purpose, the editor in most screenshot applications (e.g. Snagit) whould work as well as any phancy photo phiddler (e.g. PhotoShop) you might have available to you. -Fred Ridder > From: art.campb...@gmail.com > Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2010 15:15:40 -0400 > Subject: Re: FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file > To: dfar...@yahoo.co.uk > CC: Framers@lists.frameusers.com > > If everything else is working, I'd open the .png with a photo editor other > than the one you used to create it and do a SaveAs PNG again, and try the > import a second time with the new file. > > Most times when I've had a problem importing graphics, it's turned out to be > a problem with the source graphic file... > > And if your system's been up a while, it wouldn't hurt to clear and reclaim > memory by rebooting > > Cheers, > Art > > Art Campbell > art.campb...@gmail.com > "... FM8 8 error message when importing *.png file
I am using FM 8.0p277 (installed as part of TCS 1) on Win XP Pro. In the recent past I have had no problem importing *.png graphic files into FrameMaker 8. Today I tried to import a *.png file and received an error message: “The filter encountered an error and could not complete the translation.” I can import files in other formats such as *.jpg. I had a quick look on the Adobe support forum, but the only references to this error message appear to be related to importing PDF documents into FrameMaker 7. Any ideas for resolving this issue would be gratefully received. ZapfDingbats error message but ZD not used in files
I have had that error message when importing XML files in FrameMaker 8.0p277, and it appears that one of FrameMaker's structured documents (for entity formats?) hasn't been updated for a while. To resolve the error message: 1. Launch FrameMaker and select File > Open Specify the file: %PROGRAMFILES%\Adobe\FrameMakerX\Structure\entfmts [where %PROGRAMFILES%\Adobe\FrameMakerX is the FM install folder] [Note: remember to backup files!] 2. Click Yes to the warning that it is a FrameMaker7 document, and also the missing fonts dialog. 3. Click in the margin area, and then Select Formats > Characters > Designer... 4. Select the character tag: FmDingbats 5. Change the font family to an alternative [I used Courier New] 6. Click Update All 7. Select File > Save Maybe Adobe will remember one day to update template documents? Regards // Simon BUCH

ZapfDingbats error message but ZD not used in files
Please pardon the cross-post; this is probably not a DITA-related issue but thought I would cast a wide net. I'm posting on behalf of another Frame 9 user. She recently got a new laptop and when trying to create a PDF from a structured Frame DITA doc, gets the message: The ZapfDingbats Font is not available. Times New Roman will be used in this session. She does not have and never has had ZapfDingbats, on this or her previous machine. Using the same template, Distiller settings, etc., I cannot reproduce this problem on my machine (I do not have ZD either). I have saved the file as MIF and searched for ZD. I've looked everywhere else I can think of for any possible relic of ZD, to no avail. The message appears for some files but not for others. It appears only in Frame 9. She does not get the message when creating PDFs in Frame 7. Seems I have read about this before but cannot find the thread now. Can anyone shed light? It doesn't help troubleshooting to say a message "was found." It helps to explain the exact steps that led to the display of a message and the context in which it was displayed. You still haven't told us what version of ePub you have. Did you try reinstalling it after installing FM8? Since it seems to be an ePub problem, you might want to check the WebWorks support site (www.webworks.com/Support/), including their wiki, and the Yahoo group for WebWorks users (groups.yahoo.com/group/wwp-users/). Of course, all of that may be moot if my suspicions about running in a server environment are correct... Richard G. Hi there, The environment is: Windows Server 2K8 R2 Framemaker 8.0p236 running in Windows XP compatibility mode Frame 9 (trial version) was installed, but that was uninstalled, and Frame 8 was installed. The Framemaker8.Client.dll was there. That seemed to work ok.until we tried the repair option in WW, and the following message was found: "The procedure entry point GetFileVersionInfoExW could not be located in the dynamic link library VERSION.dll". I'm not sure what this means. "The most memorable people in life will be the friends who loved you when you weren't very lovable". From: "Combs, Richard" To: Jackie Connors ; framers@lists.frameusers.com Sent: Fri, March 5, 2010 4:45:02 PM Subject: RE: Cannot initialize API client error message Jackie Connors wrote: > Has anyone seen such an error message? > > "Cannot initialize API client c:\program files > (x86)adobe\framemaker8\fminit\plugins\WebWorks.FrameMaker8.Client.dll" Probably. But I suspect that's not your real question. :-) I take it you've seen that message. And that you have FM 8 and some version of WebWorks ePublisher Pro. And that you're running some 64-bit Windows OS. (It always helps to describe the environment in which you experienced the problem and the version of FM and other involved software.) So, under what circumstances did you see this message? What had changed since the last time you did the same thing without seeing that message? (It always helps to actually describe the issue you're having.) Did you check the path specified in the message? Was FrameMaker8.Client.dll there? If not, is WebWorks in the Add and Remove Programs list? If so, does it have a repair option? If not, have you tried reinstalling it? HTH! Richard G. Richard G. First off - how are you trying to create a PDF? Printing to the Adobe PDF printer instance (rec. method) or Save As PDF (reportedly flakey)? Do you have the Adobe PDF printer set as the default in FM (using the SetPrint plug-in)? Did it ever work before on this doc? Have you tried Art Campbell's MIF-wash technique (save .fm as .mif, open .mif, save back as .fm) to fight corruption. Could you be subject to the MS Hotfix for PDF creation? Framers, I posted this before but so far no response and I didn't succeed in resolving it. Opening an XML file in FM9. XML file USES Public DTD declaration: http://www.oasis-open.org/docbook/xml/4.5/docbookx.dtd";> Then an error report in FM comes up: XML Read Report Log XSLT Processor Messages SAXParseException: An exception occurred! Type:Could not open external entity 'C\Documents and Settings\kaiijn\AppIication Data\NetLibCAche\c696803b24573f4b8 1 35d3caf 7bbadea\dbnotnx.mod', Error in XSL transformation. Stopped file opening. In the FrameMaker application an XSLT is run on the XML before it is passed on to FrameMaker itself. What seems to happen now is that it (The Parser?) makes a local copy of the DTD in the user's folder. But it only copies the main DTD file (docbookx.dtd) and not the .mod files. When we take out the XSLT, the XML opens fine (but with errors because the XML is not valid, that's why we need the XSLT). So, I'm wondering: why does FM/the parser make a local copy of the DTD - and how comes it doesn't take the complete set. FrameMaker itself knows where to find the DTD (if we skip the XSLT - no error). We don't want to use a local DTD declaration because the XML files will go to an external client. In fact, the XSLT adds a local DTD declaration to a modified DTD. Any ideas how to solve this? Hi Wim... I can't say for sure .. but from what I've seen I think that FM9's attempt to enable the ability to work with http-based files has gone a bit overboard. As far as I can tell, if the DTD is specified with an http reference, FM9 ignores the public ID and its association to a structured app, and actually downloads the DTD from the remote location. Unfortunately, even if this was a good idea, it doesn't do the job properly and doesn't download the MOD files. The only "fix" I know of is to change the DTD specification to be just the DTD filename. This should work fine with most editors assuming the public ID is defined in the catalog and maps properly to a local DTD. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer .. perhaps there's a switch that tells FM to use the public ID. This worked fine in FM8. It's just a warning message that one or more component files in the book have a Conditional text setting that is inconsistent with the others. It's not a big deal. I forget if you can apply Conditional text settings to all files in a book in 7. If you can, select 'em all and do it. If not, pick one comoponent file with the correct settings and Apply Formats to all the others, checking only the ConText settings. Save and update. Art Campbell art.campbell at gmail.com "... "FM8_Track_Changes_added" is the name of a condition in one or many of your files. It has nothing to do with any updates. It's a condition you or someone editing your files created and used. FrameMaker is telling you that its visibility settings are inconsistently applied throughout your book, meaning some have the condition indicators (usually colored text) visible and some have them hidden so the condition looks like regular text. Select all files in your book and pull up "Show/hide conditional text" and set the indicators appropriately.
