Say, I start a process as follows (just an example of a daemon):
/usr/bin/nice --10 /usr/local/sbin/httpd -DSSL
Would this aversely affect overall FreeBSD (4.10) performance
when the daemon is idle? Or only when it actually starts
doing something?

You cannot restore the root-partition on the root-partition that you booted
from, because it is in use at the time. You need to boot from a different
FreeBSD system (or 'fix-it' floppy) to make that happen.

but get complaints of not enough free space to save debug. Thought it was ntpd
causing the panic, killed it and made 4 day uptime but it's gone back to the 24th

Since you are running sendmail 8.12.6, I strongly recommend using milter. Of
course, you could also do a quick-and-dirty hack with a macro:

Or it could be that dump, while the file has already been deleted, just
grows extra large because of all those blocks that have been used. :(
Is there a way I can flush this cache, so dump will only use files that
actually still exist?
