[Audyssey] Good news: how to make the WII a whole lot more accessible

2009-02-10 Thread Ken
If any of you have played the Wii, you know that it's just about impossible to
start, since on the startup screen there are seven buttons to push--four on top
and three on the bottom, which makes for a confusing and frustrating day at the
Wii console. Even though you know the one you want is in the top left corner,
you just can't seem to find it and instead find yourself adjusting your
daughter's mii... (which is the way she programmed her character to look in the
games.) Incidentally, I gave hers quite the hairdo.
With the screen in such a state, you might spend an hour starting the game you
want and have time for a match of tennis before dinner time--if you're lucky.
Well, fear not Wii fans, because I have found a solution. You'll need sighted
assistance for this but...
In addition to the page containing the start game icon, there are three or more
pages with additional channels. There are two ways to get to those pages--the
plus and minus keys on the Wiimote, or the arrows on the screen.
What we are going to do is to drag each channel, (accept for the one we
want--the start game icon,) to another page.
Have your friend hold a and b together while pointing at a channel, then move
to the right arro and let go--and they have successfully moved the channel.
You'll know it because you'll hear a chirp from the Wii and your friend saying,
cool.
Have them do this for the next five channels, and you're done. You now have a
startup screen with only one button--well, plus the arrows, but they won't do
anything accept change pages and you just hit the minus button to get back to
the first page--no harm done. So now all you do is move the Wiimote around
till it vibrates and you're there. Make sure that your assistant moves the
channel you want--the start channel which, if they can't figure it out, will
say Wii sports, on it if that CD is in, to a place far away from the
arrows--the upper left corner perhaps. I can now start the game almost every
time I try it, although somehow another channel appeared on the first page--but
that's what happens when you let your children play with adults' toys! LOL
Well, if any of you have or are considering to purchase a Wii, I hope this
helps.

Re: [Audyssey] New MOTA Trailer Released

2009-02-10 Thread Lukás Hosnedl
Yeah, this trailer sounds tons better to me than the first one. The music
and new voiceovers make such a great difference in terms of the game's
overal feeling or atmosphere... Only the new Angela sounds perhaps a bit too
aggressive to me. Do you think that mixing the two voices together, choosing
the best fitting sounds for each event from the two sets of screams and
grunts, would make a noticeable difference in the end? Like two different
persons? :-) Cause I would definitely replace at least the jump scream with
something less urgent. :-D
Other than that, keep up the unbelievable great work, Tom, I just still
can't believe that a game of such professionality is gonna be completed one
day.

That works well, but then of course you have to deal with the awesomeness
that is trying to find the start button, and the go back button. And then of
course not all games use the d pad for navigation. Ahem carnival games I'm
looking at you.
And you too deca sports.
I'll stick with my xBox. Heh

You don't raise your pokemon, you just build a team, picking your
pokemon's levels, attacks, evolutions etc. Then you connect to a server
and find another trainer to battle. Its not really an rpg per say, just a
competition game to see who can build the best team. But its still pretty
fun for what its worth. It'd be cool if someone would be willing to host a
regular server for battles, the public netbattle server went down a long
time ago.

I've never seen a good pokemon RPG. The closest thing to an online
pokemon

battle game I had fun with was Netbattle, where you could connect to a

one
of your friends. It was a bit tough to adapt to but it was accessible

fun. Don't know that its still aroudn though and don't know the url.

Hi

So, here I am, I started playing this game at:
http://tppcrpg.net/
Its quite rediculous, really. For anyone that knows anything about
pokemon, level 4 pokemon, no matter what kind, cannot learn hyper beam.
I
mean yeah if your crazy enough to use a tm on one. So, my charmander
kept
getting demolished by these pokemon using crazy attacks. Not to
mention,
how exactly are you supposed to battle and make money, and catch
pokemon

and what not? How do you get to each town? Those are just a few of my
questions.
Someone said this game was great - it is to a point until the novelty
wears off and it gets so confusing that I had to wait a few hours
before I

tried again.

So you register, pick your starter pokemon. There is no help at all to
be
found here. I can battle a trainer, yay. Then, suddenly, out of
nowhere,

it says a wild pokemon appears! So, I start fighting. This pokemon is
level 4, the same as mine. It uses icebeam. Seriously...it can use ice
beam, flame thrower, surf, and tackle. Hows that for randomness? Then,
I

look at my pokemons attacks. Know what it had? Flamethrower, watergun,
tackle, and scratch!

That's when I gave up on it. Maybe someone else here understands it
more

than i do.
anyone have any ideas?

thanks

If any of you have played the Wii, you know that it's just about
impossible
to start, since on the startup screen there are seven buttons to
push--four
on top and three on the bottom, which makes for a confusing and
frustrating
day at the Wii console. Even though you know the one you want is in the
top

left corner, you just can't seem to find it and instead find yourself
adjusting your daughter's mii... (which is the way she programmed her
character to look in the games.) Incidentally, I gave hers quite the
hairdo.
With the screen in such a state, you might spend an hour starting the game
you want and have time for a match of tennis before dinner time--if you're
lucky.
Well, fear not Wii fans, because I have found a solution. You'll need
sighted assistance for this but...
In addition to the page containing the start game icon, there are three or
more pages with additional channels. There are two ways to get to those
pages--the plus and minus keys on the Wiimote, or the arrows on the
screen.

What we are going to do is to drag each channel, (accept for the one we
want--the start game icon,) to another page.
Have your friend hold a and b together while pointing at a channel, then
move to the right arro and let go--and they have successfully moved the
channel. You'll know it because you'll hear a chirp from the Wii and your
friend saying, cool.
Have them do this for the next five channels, and you're done. You now
have
a startup screen with only one button--well, plus the arrows, but they
won't

do anything accept change pages and you just hit the minus button to get
back to the first page--no harm done. So now all you do is move the
Wiimote

around till it vibrates and you're there. Make sure that your assistant
moves the channel you want--the start channel which, if they can't figure
it
out, will say Wii sports, on it if that CD is in, to a place far away
from

the arrows--the upper left corner perhaps. I can now start the game almost
every time I try it, although somehow another channel appeared on the
first

page--but that's what happens when you let your children play with adults'
toys! LOL Well, if any of you have or are considering to purchase a Wii,
I

hope this helps.

I've never seen a good pokemon RPG. The closest thing to an
 online pokemon
battle game I had fun with was Netbattle, where you could connect
 to a
server or host your own, make a team of pokemon and battle it out
 with one
of your friends. It was a bit tough to adapt to but it was
 accessible and
fun. Don't know that its still aroudn though and don't know the
 url.

 Hi

So, here I am, I started playing this game at:
 http://tppcrpg.net/
Its quite rediculous, really. For anyone that knows anything
 about
pokemon, level 4 pokemon, no matter what kind, cannot learn
 hyper beam. I
mean yeah if your crazy enough to use a tm on one. So, my
 charmander kept
getting demolished by these pokemon using crazy attacks. Not to
 mention,
how exactly are you supposed to battle and make money, and catch
 pokemon
and what not? How do you get to each town? Those are just a few
 of my
 questions.
Someone said this game was great - it is to a point until the
 novelty
wears off and it gets so confusing that I had to wait a few
 hours before I
 tried again.

So you register, pick your starter pokemon. There is no help at
 all to be
found here. I can battle a trainer, yay. Then, suddenly, out
 of nowhere,
it says a wild pokemon appears! So, I start fighting. This
 pokemon is
level 4, the same as mine. It uses icebeam. Seriously...it can
 use ice
beam, flame thrower, surf, and tackle. Hows that for
 randomness? Then, I
look at my pokemons attacks. Know what it had? Flamethrower,
 watergun,
 tackle, and scratch!

That's when I gave up on it. Maybe someone else here
 understands it more
 than i do.
 anyone have any ideas?

 thanks

Not sure if the wii or xbox360 have this, but I know for sure the ps3 does.
For most games there's a little thing called the XMB media bar and when you
highlight the game disc, it plays a 10-15 second video of the game, complete
with music, so we know exactly what game it is. As an example, if I was to
highlight the game disc for heavenly sword in the ps3, it would play a
heavy, movie-style orchestral track as opposed to the video acompanied by
applause and cheering from a crowd with the rock band and rock band 2 discs.

those pages--the plus and minus keys on the Wiimote, or the arrows on the
You now
have a startup screen with only one button--well, plus the arrows, but
they won't do anything accept change pages and you just hit the minus
button to get back to the first page--no harm done. So now all you do is
move the Wiimote around till it vibrates and you're there. Make sure that
your assistant moves the channel you want--the start channel which, if
they can't figure it out, will say Wii sports, on it if that CD is in,
to a place far away from the arrows--the upper left corner perhaps. I can
now start the game almost every time I try it, although somehow another
channel appeared on the first page--but that's what happens when you let
your children play with adults' toys! LOL
Well, if any of you have or are considering to purchase a Wii, I hope
this helps.

Yes, wii does. The music or sound could be a loop or short depending on
individual games. For mortal kombat armageddon is a simple 2 fierce notes.

Re: [Audyssey] dark room and programming for Wiimotes

2009-02-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Ken,
Learning to program in Java is not too bad. If you have any background
in C++, C#, etc then Java will be a peace of cake. If not it might take
you a little longer to get the necessary skills, but Java is fairly easy
to learn as far as languages goes.
If you want an IDE Eclipse is fairly accessible both on Windows and
Linux. I've used it several times. Though I personally prefer to code in
notepad and compile via the javac command line compiler myself. However,
Eclipse is fine if you want to use that.
If you want to really discuss this in depth sign up for my developers
mailing list on the USA Games mail server

http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/lists.php
and I'll be able to fill you in on your options.
Smile.

Ken wrote:

How hard is programming in Java, and does anyone know about Eclipse, and
whether or not the libraries and plug-ins are accessible? If so, it would
give me a good foundation for programming a Wii-based game as VB6 isn't going
to support bluetooth stacks--to my knowlege anyway. I looked at VB.net express
and it was a maze of confusion from the get-go, so I'm looking again at new
programming languages to learn, and I thought that this might be a good start
as there is code relating to the use of the Wiimotes.

I really can't do that. Reason is in the early Alphas I was using the
sounds of Lara Croft, from the Tomb Raider games, as place holder sounds
until I got someone else to do the character effects for Angela. As a
result using the Lara Croft effects would technically be breaking
international copyright laws, and having had this sort of trouble before
with Montezuma's Revenge i won't do that. So officially I have my own

Hi Will and all,
Actually, when I get finished with one of the newer patches for 0.5
Angela will do something different when she encounters a wall. Instead
of a thump/scream she will say this is a dead end or something like
that. I am assuming here that a person wouldn't actually run into the
wall face first so she will tell you that the wall is there and stop
before hitting it. The coolness of this game is in the detail I put into it.

Hi Charles,
The problem with such people is they never stop and think of the cost
both in time and money to create asingle game like Mysteries of the
Ancients. The music you here in the trailer sure as heck wasn't free. It
will take at least four sales of MOTA to get the investment back on the
music production work alone. So if they think $35 is too much all I can
say to them let us see you do it for less time, less money, less skill,
and tell me that $35 is too much.

35 dollars isn't that much, considering a new game for ps3, psp, etc costs
like 50 bucks. I get all of mine used, and the resale value goes way, way
down to like 25 bucks, sometimes less.
They shouldn't be whining. In my eyes, audiogames should be that price or
more, especially since the ag market is so small to begin with and devs get
hardly any recognition for there work. Maybe that's just me, though.

Hi Charles,
The problem with such people is they never stop and think of the cost
both in time and money to create asingle game like Mysteries of the
Ancients. The music you here in the trailer sure as heck wasn't free. It
will take at least four sales of MOTA to get the investment back on the
music production work alone. So if they think $35 is too much all I can
say to them let us see you do it for less time, less money, less skill,
and tell me that $35 is too much.

2009-02-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
That is a very good point. In general most accessible games cost less
than your average Play Station, Xbox, or PC game title. Many games for
my PS2 were round about $45 or $50 when they first came out. After they
got some shelf life theydropped down to $25 to $30. so I feel that $35
is pretty fare. It is between that $25 discount price and $50 for the
new game releases. Especially, since i don't actually make much off the
games in return anyway.

They shouldn't be whining. In my eyes, audiogames should be that price

devs get hardly any recognition for there work. Maybe that's just me,
though.

Hi Ron,
Um... You mean Tomb Raider don't you? Tomb Hunter is the USA Games
series loosely based on Tomb Raider. not the other way round. Grin.
Anyway, the PC Tomb Raider games all place around $30 in price here in
the U.S. The PC releases are a bit cheaper than the PS2 and PS3
releases. I haven't done any recent pricing for Tomb Raider Underworld
for PS3 but last I checked the lowest price going was $45 for it. So
Tomb Hunter has that beat in price by $10, and it is fully accesible.

you think that mixing the two voices together, choosing the best fitting
sounds
for each event from the two sets of screams and grunts, would make a
noticeable

difference in the end? Like two different persons?
End snip

I really can't do that. Reason is in the early Alphas I was using the
sounds of Lara Croft, from the Tomb Raider games, as place holder sounds
until I got someone else to do the character effects for Angela. As a
result using the Lara Croft effects would technically be breaking

with Montezuma's Revenge i won't do that. So officially I have my own
character effects for Angela Carter.

Yeah, definitely! Now you are right! REminds me of Angel of Darkness, where
Lara Croft also used to talk to herself at several occasions. :-D Like when
you attempted a task that you were too weak for, so she just said: I'm not
strong enough. Or there were several little cluess to help you solve a
particularly tough puzzle that sounded misterious at first but later made
perfect sense. For example, I remember that there was a place where you
unarmed a timed bomb or something like that and then had to get underwater
somehow, so she just told you: Dive, girl, dive, or something like that.
Wonderful ideas you have, Thomas. Besides, it will be cool to have Angela
say something, actual fluent sentences rather than just screams of pain or
shock, at certain places in the game. You are moving the audiogaming world
forward by a light year and not just a single step, really! :-D

 Hi Ken,
Not sure what you mean by vb .net express looked a mass of confusion . Are
you referring to the IDE? If so, it takes a bit of time to get used to, but
once you do, you will really appreciate the power and abilities it offers
you.
As for programming any halfway serious audio game, I've looked at a bit of
java code, and I'd say visual basic is more or less on level ground with it
in terms of difficulty to program, which in my opinion isn't that hard.
When I started out in 2005 looking to get into it, I looked long and hard
at several options. I thought about C#, but I can do the exact same things
without having to warp my brain around there weird syntax and use of odd
symbols. Before you C coders out there get bent out of shape, I want you to
know I don't care what language you use, same as I don't care what kind of

what I am going to use, and for me that was vb .net express. I'm not putting
down C# or any other language, and if I were doing graphics intensive stuff,
I probably would have gone with C# or something similar.
I've done about all you can imagine an audio game could use, from joystick
inputs, to full featured online play with virtually no lag. All this was
done with visual basic .net.
The single exception to this is force feedback, which I was not able to
put into rail racer, which chapped my stick, and perhaps is fixed by now.
I am about to release my second and third commercial games in the last two
years, all three of which were built on visual basic, and with virtually no
programming experience 4 years ago to speak of.
I can't give a higher reccomendation than that for anyone looking to
program audio games for the blind.
It has taken a lot of time and tenacity, but as the old saying goes,
nothing worth doing comes easy.
I encourage you to take another look at vb .net, lord knows we need all
the good accessible developers out there we can get, and in my humble
opinion I think java is going to leave you lacking in the end.

How hard is programming in Java, and does anyone know about Eclipse, and
whether or not the libraries and plug-ins are accessible? If so, it would
give me a good foundation for programming a Wii-based game as VB6 isn't
going to support bluetooth stacks--to my knowlege anyway. I looked at
VB.net express and it was a maze of confusion from the get-go, so I'm
looking again at new programming languages to learn, and I thought that
this might be a good start as there is code relating to the use of the

Hi Lidsy.

The item handling syntax is a litle weerd in fallthrough and takes some
getting used to.

To put an item from your hand to the pack you need to type,

move from hand to p01 5 food for example, - or in short, mv fr hand to
p01 5 food.

P01 is the container's code, if you own another pack it would be p02.

In typing use here or hr to refer to the location, so to put an item
lying on the ground streight into your pack type:

mv fr hr to p01 axe.

Subject: [Audyssey] Good news: how to make the WII a whole lot

No way!, or $35? They're nuts!. I just told them to wait and see,
and don't judge the final product by the sound of the first small
portion. I'll bet the game will be well worth it.

Hi,
Smile. Thanks for the vote of confidence. WE have been working long and
hard to deliver this game, and it has taken many hours of work to get
where we are. So if the quality is good when the final product is
released it is because of the time and energy put into it. The Windows
release is quite a bit further along than the Mac and Linux ports, but
eventually we hope to get it ported to Mac OS and Linux too.

Re: [Audyssey] New MOTA Trailer Released

2009-02-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Lukas,
As of todays builds Angela does speak some stuff now using a real human
voice. For example if she steps into a room with an enemy in it she will
say something like what now, we've got company, hostiles, etc.
Though my absolute favorite fraze is, get out of my way! Quite
apparently not going to take any crap off of centaurs, skeleton
warriors, or flying harpies.
Another new addition that didn't make it into the trailer that has been
added to the game just over the passed 24 hours are warning messages. If
she is walking, not running, when approaching a fire, lava pit, chasm,
etc she will let you know when she is in danger. Angela will say
something like watch out, look out, watch it, etc. It is a great
cue that you are in mortal danger.Especially for silent traps like
spikes and poison darts that don't make any sound until you trip them.
Although Angela can see them so she points them out to you along the way.

Lukás Hosnedl wrote:
Yeah, definitely! Now you are right! REminds me of Angel of Darkness,
where Lara Croft also used to talk to herself at several occasions. :-D
Like when you attempted a task that you were too weak for, so she just
said: I'm not strong enough. Or there were several little cluess to
help you solve a particularly tough puzzle that sounded misterious at
first but later made perfect sense. For example, I remember that there
was a place where you unarmed a timed bomb or something like that and
then had to get underwater somehow, so she just told you: Dive, girl,
dive, or something like that. Wonderful ideas you have, Thomas.
Besides, it will be cool to have Angela say something, actual fluent
sentences rather than just screams of pain or shock, at certain places
in the game. You are moving the audiogaming world forward by a light
year and not just a single step, really! :-D

Re: [Audyssey] What language for gaming? Was:Re: dark room and programming for Wiimotes

2009-02-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi everyone,

Quote
I've done about all you can imagine an audio game could use, from
joystick inputs,
to full featured online play with virtually no lag. All this was done
with visual

basic .net.
End quote

I'd like to add to this in my experience that the language itself is
usually as less important as knowing how to program in it correctly,
being able to get the most out of it, and as long as it fulfills all of
your requirements and expectations. As it happens Visual Basic .NET has
come a long long ways from Visual Basic 6. There are many new features
and abilities in Visual Basic .NET that make it sutable for just about
any project if you really want to go that way. It is even possible to
make cross platform applications with Visual Basic .NET which was not
previously possible under Visual Basic 6 and earlier.

Quote
I thought about C#, but I can do the exact same things without having to
warp my brain around there weird syntax and use of odd symbols.
End quote

Smile Seeing as the C-Style syntax is universally used by several
programming languages to our way of thinking Visual Basic syntax looks
weird and bloated. Though, as you pointed out this is a personal
preference here because C# and Visual Basic applications are exactly the
same after they are compiled into a .NET binary. The only difference
between C# .NET and Visual Basic .NET is how the code looks.

In C-Style languages you might create an integer variable like
int myVariable = 0;
or create a Visual Basic variable
myVariable As Integer = 0
like this. Either way you like doing it you are going to do the same
thing. It just looks different.

Quote
I encourage you to take another look at vb .net, lord knows we need
all the good
accessible developers out there we can get, and in my humble opinion I
think java

is going to leave you lacking in the end.
End quote

Yes, I definitely agree. Java is a great language, but I found it wasn't
so hot for audio games. For small games it did ok. When I ported
Mysteries of the Ancients to Java last year the game ran terrible. I
ended up having to abandon it and go back to the original C# source
code. So i'd be careful with Java.

HTH.

(which is the way she programmed her
character to look in the games.) Incidentally, I gave hers quite the
hairdo.
With the screen in such a state, you might spend an hour starting the
game
you want and have time for a match of tennis before dinner time--if
you're

lucky.
Well, fear not Wii fans, because I have found a solution. You'll need
sighted assistance for this but...
In addition to the page containing the start game icon, there are three
or

more pages with additional channels. There are two ways to get to those
pages--the plus and minus keys on the Wiimote, or the arrows on the
screen.

What we are going to do is to drag each channel, (accept for the one we
want--the start game icon,) to another page.
Have your friend hold a and b together while pointing at a channel, then
move to the right arro and let go--and they have successfully moved the
channel. You'll know it because you'll hear a chirp from the Wii and
your

friend saying, cool.

I can now start the game
almost
every time I try it, although somehow another channel appeared on the
first
page--but that's what happens when you let your children play with
adults'
toys! LOL Well, if any of you have or are considering to purchase a Wii,
I

hope this helps.

(which is the way she programmed her
character to look in the games.) Incidentally, I gave hers quite the

Have them do this for the next five channels, and you're done. You now
have
a startup screen with only one button--well, plus the arrows, but they
won't

do anything accept change pages and you just hit the minus button to get

All right, you've won me over I think. I just got quite miffed when the
upgrade program produced so many errors in Enemy Attack. My goodness, can
you imagine how that would play on the wii?
Anyway, I'll look into it for sure and start writing again. My brother
broke my last computer and, until I get it integrated with the new one, I
cannot continue with Wrecking Ball, though I may have put the source for
Air Hockey up on my site, I can't remember--unless there is a way to
decompile the exe file?
I think that both Enemy Attack and Wrecking ball will both be great Wii
games. For Enemy attack I'll use the sensor bar for aiming, and since
only two or three enemy will be coming at you at once it won't be hard to
point and shoot--just like using the mouse. Oh I can't wait to start
programming. My only obstacle now is getting a bluetooth adapter and stack
that will connect the Wiimotes to the PC--I've heard of many troubles in
that regard, and that only the Tashiba Blue Solleil works, and that it's a
30-day trial.

Anyway, back to gaming!

 Hi Ken,
Not sure what you mean by vb .net express looked a mass of confusion .
Are you referring to the IDE? If so, it takes a bit of time to get used
to, but once you do, you will really appreciate the power and abilities
it offers you.
As for programming any halfway serious audio game, I've looked at a bit
of java code, and I'd say visual basic is more or less on level ground
with it in terms of difficulty to program, which in my opinion isn't that
hard.
When I started out in 2005 looking to get into it, I looked long and
hard at several options. I thought about C#, but I can do the exact same
things without having to warp my brain around there weird syntax and use
of odd symbols. Before you C coders out there get bent out of shape, I
want you to know I don't care what language you use, same as I don't care
what kind of computer you use, for me whatever gets the job done with
minimal fuss is what I am going to use, and for me that was vb .net
express. I'm not putting down C# or any other language, and if I were
doing graphics intensive stuff, I probably would have gone with C# or
something similar.
I've done about all you can imagine an audio game could use, from
joystick inputs, to full featured online play with virtually no lag. All
this was done with visual basic .net.
The single exception to this is force feedback, which I was not able to
put into rail racer, which chapped my stick, and perhaps is fixed by now.
I am about to release my second and third commercial games in the last
two years, all three of which were built on visual basic, and with
virtually no programming experience 4 years ago to speak of.

 Later,
Che

Re: [Audyssey] What language for gaming? Was:Re: dark room and programming for Wiimotes

2009-02-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Eclipse is very accessible. I use it with Window Eyes 7 any time i have
important Java projects to do, and it also works fine with Orca on the
Linux side. So it is a decent accessible cross platform Java IDE.
To Ken or anyone else considering Java Eclipse also comes with a
graphical toolkit called Swift. I highly recommend using Swift instead
of swing if you plan to have Window Eyes, Jaws, Hal, and everything else
support the application out of the box. The primary advantage of swift
besides it is highly accesible it doesn't require a java access bridge
to be installed to get access from the application.
As for why I personally decided not to use Java I noticed that my
Genesis Engine didn't perform as well written in Java as it did in C#
.NET. Otherwise I like the language, it worked well for my test
applications, but not apparently for what I wanted to do with it. A game
that worked perfectly well under Windows crashed when ran on the Java VM
for Linux so I felt I had to look at my other options.

John Bannick wrote:

Ken,

With all due respect to my colleagues, Java rocks!

It's an easy language to learn and to code in.

I believe that Eclipse is blind-accessible. Certainly IBM (which begat
Eclipse and still has a major hand in it) is blind-accessibility
supportive.

I've had no problems with sound using Java.

We play WAV files and MIDI files, as well as using the FreeTTS speech
synthisizer.

We've had no problems with sound on either Windows systems or the Mac.
Don't know about Linux, but don't see why the Java sound APIs would be a
problem there.

I have the highest respect for the technical assessments of Thomas, Che,
Ryan, et al. But Java works fine for me.

That being said, you might get more technical support from them and other
Audyssey folks if you use their languages.

Good luck in any case,

Yes, right, but if that is not the disc you want, you can eject the disc and
put in another want and wii will read and play the music. So it still works.
Don't have to click the back icon and re-enter.
The plus key is often used to enter the options menu when you are in the game.
As for games not using the DPad to nevigate through the menus, you can try
using the nunchuck. Some works and some don't. If you are into sports games,
give mario and sonic at the olympic games a shot.

Yes, wii does. The music or sound could be a loop or short depending on

Not sure if the wii or xbox360 have this, but I know for sure the ps3
   does.
For most games there's a little thing called the XMB media bar and when
   you
highlight the game disc, it plays a 10-15 second video of the game,
   complete
with music, so we know exactly what game it is. As an example, if I was
   to
highlight the game disc for heavenly sword in the ps3, it would play a
heavy, movie-style orchestral track as opposed to the video acompanied by
applause and cheering from a crowd with the rock band and rock band 2
   discs.
