Speaking of solar panels. I have an
idea.

What about breeding pens. You can only have one. It

costs

1.5

the normal rate, but it uses 5 power per turn. If it

should be

I have not been following all the talk since I am just now getting to try
the beta. I can climb the rope and go to that level and get to the lever.
In the previous beta to get back down to the original level I could climb
to the top of the rope and then jump to the left. That doesn't work in this
beta. so I end up in the same room. And every time I jump off the rope and
go to the end of the room the lever is there.

Is the lever only supposed to appear once or is that a puzzle in the game?

How can I get back into the room below the rope?

Thanks,
Dean

Hi Lori,

Well, as I said earlier there are lots of alternatives to the Scansoft
Real Speak voices, and most of them sound pretty good. Here is a few
suggestions to check out.

First, there is the ATT Natural Voices which happen to be sold
through Nextup.com. I actually use Mike and Cristal a lot, and they
are definitely some of the more human sounding voices out there.

Next, there is the Swift 5 voices produced by Cepstral.com. Some of
their voices like Callie and Diane actually sound pretty decent
reading books from Bookshare etc. Even better yet they have 32-bit and
64-bit versions now, they have versions for Mac, Linux, and Windows
and they seem to be open minded about supporting as many applications,
screen readers, etc as possible. I don't think you can go wrong with
any of their voices.

There is the Ivona TTS voices sold by Ivona.com. These are probably
the best sounding voices I've ever heard. They are a bit on the
expensive side,$45.00 or so each, but they really sound human. I've
been listening to a book read by one of their U.K. voices, Amy, and
she sounds very human.

Finally, there is the Cereproc voices Dark mentioned sold by
Cereproc.com. I personally didn't care for their voices myself, but I
do know some VI computer users/gamers like them. They are worth
checking out as well.

Speaking of solar panels. I have an
idea.

What about breeding pens. You can only have one. It

costs

50 to buy, and can be used to produce a species at

1.5

the normal rate, but it uses 5 power per turn. If it

is

switched off or a new species is introduced there

should be

a price for getting it back up and running.
What do you think?

Hi Aprone,
Perhaps this is me being overoptomistic,

but I

tried to

restore my saved game from Mission 3 of

the

earlier beta of

Lunimals with the latest one. I had

gotten to the

point where I should be breeding birds

and

rabbits, but

somehow managed to lose all my power.

The solar panels

didn't seem to be charging properly, and

so I

was in a catch

22 situation.
Is this an artifact of the old save?
Best,
Zack.

Hi, this is a bit of a stretch in the off list category. You might look

you can see. You don't need to install anything special in Miranda to
get Facebook chat working.

Hope this helps.

2011-05-12 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
I've just uploaded another version. I've already confirmed that this finally
fixes the window eyes support, though I'm sure, somehow, it won't work for
everyone using window eyes. I'm just being pessimistic, hopefully it'll all
work now. I've also taken another shot at getting JAWS to work. I think I was
looking at old documentation because when I started over, I'm absolutely
certain the stuff I found last time said something different. Hopefully this
will work for JAWS now too, so please let me know if you use Jaws and it works!

The update is the same link as always.

Speaking of solar panels. I have an

What about breeding pens. You can only have
 one. It
  costs
50 to buy, and can be used to produce a

 If it

  What do you think?

Re: [Audyssey] [audyssey] scansoft voices

2011-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Brient,

Well, since that would be illegal I can't really tell you to do that.
I was merely explaining that since the Scansoft Sapi compatible voices
aren't really being sold any more there is no legal way to obtain them
that I am personally aware of. All of the versions on the net I've
seen of late are specialized versions for your GPS, restricted to a
Nextup product like Text Aloud, or something like the Real Speak
Direct versions locked to Jaws. I haven't seen any generic Sapi 5
versions being sold any more. If people really want them bad enough
they have to turn to less than legal means to get them.

If you want my personal feelings/opinion on the matter I say forget
them. If Nuance, AKA Scansoft, don't want our business take it
elsewhere and buy yourself some legal voices from Cereproc, Cepstral,
Ivona, etc. The Scansoft Real Speak voices aren't worth pirating when
there are plenty of legal alternatives just as good. I'm just lucky I
got my Scansoft voices when they were still being sold as a generic
Sapi 5 stand alone product before Nuance decided to become jurks about
the whole thing.

Cheers!

2011-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Clement,

I've noticed. My wife wants us to buy a WII since the games are mainly
oriented towards family and kids, and she's not exactly into violence.
So something like WII Sports and Sports Resort are right up her alley.
As for me I love wrestling games, and I don't mind playing something
like Marvel vs Capcom. So somethinglike an XBox 360 is more to my
liking. Naturally we can't really afford both right now.
Cheers!

For instance, I myself use to play Megaman etc rather heavily until I
lost my vision. Now, that I'm older, a parent, etc I'd love to pass on
those same kinds of games to my kids. When I go out and buy a PS III
or an XBox 360 I want to have games equal to what I played on my NES
or Super NES back in the day as well as any new games that came out.
These remakes and new side-scrollers help bridge that gap.

Not only that we need a wider variety of family friendly games. I've
noticed a trend towards teen and mature rated games which are fine for
people in those age groups, but my son is only 6. I like to find games
more age appropriate for him. Somethinglike Megaman is more age
appropriate for him than Grand Theft Auto or MK 9 in my opinion.

side scrollers are coming back. Bionic commando and final fight have
been remade, though final fight only has redone graphics and remixed

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
HI Darren,

Well, I don't know if new games aren't as fun as they use to be, but
you are right about them becoming more complex. Just looking at the
evolution of Star Wars games they've changed quite a lot over the last
30 years.

Back in the Atari 2600 days we had the Empire Strikes Back game which
was basically a snow speader flying around blowing up as many AT-ATs
as you can before you die or they destroy the shield generator on
Hoth. The graphics were poor, but it was fun because you could just
pick up the controller, press start, and start blasting.

Then, in the early 90's Lucas Arts started coming out with their Super
Star Wars series for the Super NES. Although, much better in terms of
sounds and graphics they were never-the-less still pretty simple
affairs. These at least had animated cutscenes and of course as Dark
has mentioned you were allowed to play different characters etc.
Features that would carry over into their newer titles.

By the mid 90's, thanks to ID Software's Quake and Doom, Lucas Arts
started producing FPS titles for the PC. These were as much a leap
forward as Super Star Wars had been from games like Empire Strikes
Back. Things like 3d graphics, 3d audio, etc was in its infancy then
but it set the stage for many of their games that would come out over
the next decade.

Now, FPS games are themselves kind of old news. As I mentioned before
most of the big name Star Wars games released over the last few years
like Knights of the Old Republic, Battle Front, Battle Front II,
Empire At War, The Old Republic, are massive MMO/RPG affairs were you
can't even get to the first mission without creating a character and
then training him/her up to a decent level.

I don't know if it is less fun, but you do have to work harder at
getting into the newer games. It takes hours to advance in the new
MMO/RPG games and the days of simply turning on the console and
playing one or two levels are coming to an end. The games have become
extremely complex.

However, I agree just because the mainstream market is turning to
newer, bigger, and more complex games doesn't mean something like
Packman should be forgotten. My wife and I found a handheld Packman
game not too long ago, maybe around Christmas time, and we baught it
for our son to play. That kind of game is still fun, despite being 30
years old, and is the kind of game you can relax while playing as you
don't have to make a lot of complex decisions like what race, class,
skills, etc you need to get through this MMO/RPG game with all the
works.

Smile.

[Audyssey] Damage Extreme

2011-05-12 Thread The Addictor
Well, I have to say this game sounds very good, and hard. Y'all thought Enemy
Attack was extreme--this sounds even crazier. Glad the keyboard aiming
technique I came up with is catching on at last.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Wars Game Thoughts/Ideas

2011-05-12 Thread dark

By random thought process tom, that gives me a cool idea!

packman rpg!

Choose your class, ghost muncher, jumper or dot hunter, and level up in
crunching and the magic schools of power pill production! ;D.

Seriously, actually there are a fair few pickup and play games stil around,
but they tend to have other factors involved.

for instance a lot of the wii minigames, marrio party and the like, not to
mention some of the more basic shootemups and brawlers around.

The difference is though that rather like judgement day, they often feature
things like a trophy system, awards, stars and more than just racking up
score as a measure of how well your doing.

Take for instance final fight 1 on the gba.

Yes, this is a near perfect arcade conversion of the original walk along
beat ehm up. However, when they bought it out on the gba, Capcom added
several things.

Character specific dialogue and cutscenes, a system of unlocking options
like a sound test and different colours of character for how many thugs you
beat up, not to mention two secret characters to unlock.

It's stil possible to stick the game on and beat up the Mad gear nasties,
but now you get something a bit better for it.

This particular trend in pickup and play games is actually one I rather
like, keeping the gameplay symple, but adding extra options depending upon
how well a player does.

It gives you something to work for, while stil keeping the game as it is in
a simplistic way, and a lot of remakes I've seen recently of older games
have followed this model.

This isn't to say games like packman and mario are unplayable or dull,
heck I've been playing the original mario games on my snes quite a bit
recently myself, only that this method of increasing the amount of time it
takes to completely master a game is a really nice idea.

Beware the gRue!

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-12 Thread dark
The problem michael, is that doss games sites list both playable and
unplayable ones.

Searching google or the if archive can be useful, but a lot of these things
need to be looked at carefully.

that's why I'm stil creating audiogames.net pages for games like bramina and
fallthru, and will probably do one for destination mars if someone is
willing to give the game a perminant home.

Hey, Dark.
You know what would be cool if someone came up with a site that would be
just for the old dos games that blind people can play.
Now if their is a site like that already around then can I get the address
please?

Thanks

Hopefully when someone see these games if they have the last or updated

There isn't actually any documentation, not with the copy of the game that
I have.

I believe it was initially retail, but as it's very much not being sold
anymore I don't especially see a problem here, actually it's a shame
Jim or Luee bryant couldn't create a windows version.

What does the documentation, if there is any, that comes with the game
say about doing this sort of distribution? Was this game free ware?,
share ware?, or other. Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-12 Thread dark

I'm not sure tom, sinse the game is s! old.

As I've said before all the old infocom games can be found on
http://if.illuminion.de/index.html

The webmaster of that site has freely said that should activision ever
contact him and request he removes the games he'd be happy to do so, but as
they are no longer available anywhere else he prefers to have them available
to others.

ditto with fallthru and bramina, both of which i found freely hosted on old
doss game sites.

While I'm all for respecting the developers of games and seeing their hard
work isn't sniched by someone for nothing, when this gets to the point of
disallowing people from playing games just for a vague fear of copywrite it
strikes me as a litle ridiculous.

Heck, sinse when michael posted the links was the first time I ever played
destination mars, I probably wouldn't ever have played the game legally as
it's certainly not being sold anymore.

Re: [Audyssey] Fantasy storm games

2011-05-12 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hi Darren,
In my opinion its sounds were low quality and there were a few bugs that I
could spot just through reading the source code. If there is general
interest then I may create a similar boxing game. Hey, I may even
incorporate it into my new fighting game if the demand is popular.

Regards,
Damien.

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-12 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Folks,
Here is info about the developer of Destenation mars
From: The Braille Monitor January, 1990
There is a new computer game for IBM and IBM compatible computers. It is
called CASINO. It actually is three games in one: blackjack; slot machine;
and a four-card poker game called flash poker. It is fully usable with a
screen-reading program and a speech synthesizer or by a sighted person from
the screen. It has sound effects and other features. For your copy, send a
check in the sum of $15 to:

Richard De Steno,
20 Meadowbrook Road,
Short Hills, New Jersey 07078;
or call (201) 379-7471 for more information.
The game will be sent on a five and a quarter inch diskette unless a three
and a half inch is requested.

From: The Braille Forum, November 1994
Dodge City Desperados is a new computer adventure game for IBM and IBM-
compatible computers that works well with speech output. The player becomes
the sheriff of Dodge City in the days of the wild West, hunting down the
desperados in town, something that's not so easy to do. For your copy, send
a $20 check to
Richard De Steno, 20 Meadowbrook Rd., Short Hills, NJ 07078, or call (201)
379-7471 for more information. Please specify which size disk you want.
Other games are also available.

From: Future Reflections Fall 1995,
After doing some research with vendors and organizations I have discovered
that there are a few programs which were written by and for the blind. These
programs are all text-based programs. These are the titles:

Guess the Capitals,
Atlantic City Black Jack,
Casino,
Destination Mars,
Dodge City Desperado's,
Run for President,
Sounds Like.
These are all IBM compatible programs. These software programs may be
purchased through Ann Morris Enterprises, Inc. 1 (800) 454-3175 and/or
through Ferguson Enterprises (605) 546-2366.

Destination Mars
Review by Patrick R Davis:

I want to review a game by Richard Destino. It has been around
for some time, but it is still good. There is an old version on
Dave
Poehlman's web page at www.clark.net/pub/poehlman/readme.htm and
you can
buy it from Ann Morris Enterprises. Destination Mars is a game
where you
have to get to Mars, but you have to get through certain hazards
such as
asteroid fields and alien ships. You can also collect gold,
diamond, and
platinum off some asteroids. You can use the metals to get fuel,
phaser
power cells, and a new force field generator from space stations.
Also,
things will break on your spaceship and you will have to find a
place to
repair them. It is pretty good, but there are a couple of things
that I
think he could improve. The first thing is when firing at alien
ships,
the computer decides whenever you hit them or not. I think Richard
could
have used audio input to aim and shoot. For example, he could have
used
some descending tones and put a low tone somewhere in the middle of
it
that someone would have to hit a key on to fire. Another thing he
could
do to improve it is to put a feature on it that would tell you how
many
repairs are needed. I also heard that he is going to add some
sounds to
his game.
He has also made a game called Dodge City Desperadoes.
Unfortunately there isn't an older version on Dave's web page, but
you
can buy it from Ann Morris Enterprises. I haven't won this game
yet. In
this game, you have to catch 3 desperadoes that are in The town to
cause
trouble. You also have to find them before your time runs out.
There is
a lot of things you need to look for before you can catch them
however.
The game is okay but I think it needs some extra work done on it.
For
example, it would be easier if he had the word limit for 3 or 4
words
instead of 2. I also think it would be easier if the game used the
arrow
keys to get around town with instead of always typing. Other than
that,
it is a pretty good game. Both of his games cost about $20.00.

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-12 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Folks,
I found my copy of
DESTINATION MARS
Version 2.1
Copyright 1990, 91, 93 by Richard L. De Steno
20 Meadowbrook Road
Short Hills, New Jersey 07078
Phone: 201-379-7471
Copying of this program is prohibited except

   * INSTRUCTIONS FOR DESTINATION MARS *
by Richard L. De Steno
Destination Mars is a game that presents you with the challenge
of
successfully travelling from Earth to Mars. You must avoid such
dangers as
excessive damage to your ship, running out of fuel, being vaporized
by space
aliens, crashing your ship, and others.
You begin the game by placing the game diskette in your default
drive and
entering the word MARS. After the opening announcement, you will be
asked if
you want sound effects. Simply press the letter Y if you do want
sound effects
or the letter N if you would rather play the game without sound
effects. Do
not press the ENTER key at any time in the game after making a
choice that asks
for a letter. However, number entries do require a press of the
ENTER key.
Next, you are instructed to press the letter B to blast off. If you
blast off
successfully, you will begin the thirty five million mile trip to
Mars.
You travel by spinning the cosmic wheel, which is done by pressing
the
ENTER key. This produces a number from 1 to 10. Your ship then
travels two
hundred thousand miles times this number. For example, if you spin
a 6,
you
travel one million, two hundred thousand miles toward Mars on that
spin of the
wheel. Press S at the cosmic wheel prompt to toggle sound on and off.
Each spin of the cosmic wheel presents you with a situation.
Most of the
situations require you to make a choice. You will be prompted in
such cases
to press A - B - E - F - R - N or H. These options mean the
following:
 A is for accelerating -
B is to use your force field barrier -
E is for taking evasive action -
F is for firing your phasers -
R is for making repairs -
N is for taking no action.
H is to get help if you forget these definitions.
You may exit the game whenever you are directed to spin the
cosmic wheel,
simply press the ESCAPE key or CTRL-C. You may also exit at any of
the
preliminary prompts at the beginning of the program.
Most of the prompts in the game are self-explanatory and need no
elaboration. There are numerous ways that you may be prevented from
reaching Mars. You undoubtedly will experience them as you attempt
to reach
your destination. There are some surprises in store for you in this
regard.
Note that you use ten units of fuel with each spin of the cosmic
wheel.
Also, keep in mind that each instance of damage to your ship must be
repaired.
If you go too fast, you may enter a time warp. Here is a hint:
the
astute player will escape the time warp on the first attempt.
You may freeze the game at the prompt to spin the cosmic wheel by
pressing F and entering a file name. To resume the frozen game, enter
the file name with MARS, like this: MARS FILENAME.

There are other programs available from Richard De Steno. Check the
README.DOC file provided with this program, or contact him for info

Hi,

Same here. Creating a cross-platform or modern Windows remake wouldn't
be a problem, but seeing as it was once retail and its copyright
status is unknown it it wouldn't be wise to just jump in and start
distributing old copies or create a modern remake.

Cheers!

Hi Folks,
Here is info about the developer of Destenation mars
From: The Braille Monitor January, 1990
There is a new computer game for IBM and IBM compatible computers. It is
called CASINO. It actually is three games in one: blackjack; slot machine;
and a four-card poker game called flash poker. It is fully usable with a
screen-reading program and a speech synthesizer or by a sighted person
from the screen. It has sound effects and other features. For your copy,
send a check in the sum of $15 to:

Richard De Steno,
20 Meadowbrook Road,
Short Hills, New Jersey 07078;
or call (201) 379-7471 for more information.
The game will be sent on a five and a quarter inch diskette unless a three
and a half inch is requested.

From: The Braille Forum, November 1994
Dodge City Desperados is a new computer adventure game for IBM and IBM-
compatible computers that works well with speech output. The player
becomes the sheriff of Dodge City in the days of the wild West, hunting
down the desperados in town, something that's not so easy to do. For your
copy, send a $20 check to
Richard De Steno, 20 Meadowbrook Rd., Short Hills, NJ 07078, or call (201)
379-7471 for more information. Please specify which size disk you want.
Other games are also available.

From: Future Reflections Fall 1995,
After doing some research with vendors and organizations I have discovered
that there are a few programs which were written by and for the blind.
These programs are all text-based programs. These are the titles:

Guess the Capitals,
Atlantic City Black Jack,
Casino,
Destination Mars,
Dodge City Desperado's,
Run for President,
Sounds Like.
These are all IBM compatible programs. These software programs may be
purchased through Ann Morris Enterprises, Inc. 1 (800) 454-3175 and/or
through Ferguson Enterprises (605) 546-2366.

Destination Mars
Review by Patrick R Davis:

I want to review a game by Richard Destino. It has been around
for some time, but it is still good. There is an old version on
Dave
Poehlman's web page at www.clark.net/pub/poehlman/readme.htm and
you can
buy it from Ann Morris Enterprises. Destination Mars is a game
where you
have to get to Mars, but you have to get through certain hazards
such as
asteroid fields and alien ships. You can also collect gold,
diamond, and
platinum off some asteroids. You can use the metals to get fuel,
phaser
power cells, and a new force field generator from space stations.
Also,
things will break on your spaceship and you will have to find a
place to
repair them. It is pretty good, but there are a couple of things
that I
think he could improve. The first thing is when firing at alien
ships,
the computer decides whenever you hit them or not. I think Richard
could
have used audio input to aim and shoot. For example, he could have
used
some descending tones and put a low tone somewhere in the middle of
it
that someone would have to hit a key on to fire. Another thing he
could
do to improve it is to put a feature on it that would tell you how
many
repairs are needed. I also heard that he is going to add some
sounds to
his game.
He has also made a game called Dodge City Desperadoes.
Unfortunately there isn't an older version on Dave's web page, but
you
can buy it from Ann Morris Enterprises. I haven't won this game
yet. In
this game, you have to catch 3 desperadoes that are in The town to
cause
trouble. You also have to find them before your time runs out.
There is
a lot of things you need to look for before you can catch them
however.
The game is okay but I think it needs some extra work done on it.
For
example, it would be easier if he had the word limit for 3 or 4
words
instead of 2. I also think it would be easier if the game used the
arrow
keys to get around town with instead of always typing. Other than
that,
it is a pretty good game. Both of his games cost about $20.00.

Re: [Audyssey] Destenation mars

2011-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, I for one agree with you. As the author of the
http://if.illuminion.de/index.html
website said it is an aweful thing for a work of art to be lost
through the copyright holders indiference. Which, sadly, is the case
with a lot of games written by commercial companies.

For a lot of mainstream companies they write a game, sell it for all
it is worth, and then forget about it. Years later when that game can
no longer be purchased, it becomes an old classic, the companies
scream and cry over the copyright laws. I think that more than
anything else really irritated me over the Montezuma's Revenge issue a
couple of years back.

For heaven's sake the game was released by Parker Brothers in 1984.
Parker Brothers sold copies for the Atari 2600 and 5200 and then
forgot about it. Utopia comes along buys up the game makes a sequel
called Montezuma's Return, and that game itself becomes as lost to
time as the original game. In fact, I didn't even know Montezuma's
Return existed until I got the cease and desist letter. You would
think that a product like that which is now better than 25 years old
should become public domain if there haven't been any updates to it in
that length of time. Yet some people are willing to hang on to the
copyrights while barring us from enjoying it.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] scansoft voices

2011-05-12 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Alfredo,

Well, the primary reason I don't use Sapi 5 instead of prerecorded
voices is because Microsoft Sapi is not Mac OS or Linux compatible.
Linux and Mac OS have totally differen speech APIs of their own which
is very different in design from Sapi. I've been trying for quite some
time now to limit the amount of Windows specific APIs in the G3D
engine, and if you look at the MOTA beta 19 road map you will see I've
just about removed everything with Microsoft's name on it.

For instance, as of the current unstable build I have replaced
DirectInput with SDL input, I have completely removed the Win32 API
and replaced it with SDL main, I have removed Microsoft Winsock and
have replaced it with SDL net, and DirectSound is currently being
replaced by FMOD Ex. The end result of all this updating, upgrading,
etc is in the very very near future I should have cross-platform
compatible versions of MOTA with the same features and ability as the
Windows release. Since the new G3D engine will be based largely on
open source APIs, rather than proprietary APIs like Sapi 5, I can
simply change a few path variables etc and recompile the engine and
the game for alternative platforms.

HTH

On 5/12/11, Alfredo_The_Music_maker birdlover2...@hotmail.com wrote:
Well yes, must look into this, but urn, is this something to talk about?
I mean, what I think about this whole thing is, why can MOTA not use
SAPI5 voices instead of having prerecorded files with the voice already
 within them?

Hey, Thomas.
I agree with you about the copyrights thing. Myself I belive that if a
game has been around for at least fifteen years and have not been
updated and is no longer for sale then people should have the right to
the game.

Especially if nobody can contact the creater of the games.
I personally don't think anyone on this list would report anybody for
passing the game or games around the list.
I know for a fact that there is not alot of people I know who play
those old accessible dos games.
