Hi Tristan,
Ummm...There are accessible mud clients for Mac OS. One that comes to
mind is called Zoom. Plus you can use the default Mac OS telnet client
in a pinch.

ok, wow you should never try to diddle with your system during an

Found that the hard way myself and had to fiddle but got it mostly
working.

I suggest you reformat.
Next time wait till java is installed all the way.
you should be able to remove msn explorer from windows setup in
add remove.

you should be able to add outlook express in the same way.
uninstall java and put it back in.
make a new user for yourself find and delete the other user,
better yet if you can get in user accounts and delete the other
user then make it again.

no problem I thought time for a system restore

However, that's when things went very! wrong.

When windows xp restarted, a random window appeared, then it
restarted with a default user profile.

After several restarts, another go at a system restore and lots
of swearing, I read the random window with ms narrator.

Said random window says:

windows cannot load the user's profile but logued you on with
the default profile for the system. the system has attempted to
load or restore a file into the registry but the specified file
is not in a registry file format

Needless to say, this is a baad! state of affiars, and what's
worse, outlook express is stil awol!

Luckily I A, have this laptop to communicate etc with, and B,
have backups of everything on my external harddrive.

Stil, the idea of starting everything from scratch on the default
profile is pretty hiddeus in terms of amount of work, pluss
I'm not sure what I'd be unable to access from my old user profile.

Normally, I'd phone dolphin tech support with this sort of issue,
but they're not open at weakends, and I'd prefer this fixed Asap.

while I know this isn't a tech support list, I'd really!
appreciate some help from some of the cleverer people here so as
to get this sorted out.

If people would prefer to take this off list, just E-mail me on d...@xgam.org
.

Any help much and distinctly appreciated.

Btw, as I said, I'm using windows xp. Luckily hal, though
not my individual settings or installs of dolphin orphius, is
accessible from the default profile, so poking around windows
will at least be possible.

sorry again for this, but I am rather stuck here.

Hi Dark,
Okay...That's something of a big problem. I know you said you don't have
an XP cd, but do you have a product recovery partition on your hard drive?
I ask because most new computers don't come with installation disks any
more. With my Compaq laptop I have to install Vista from a product
recovery partition already present on the laptop's hard drive. There is an
option to burn it to a cd or dvd, but by and large it is done by starting
up the computer and running the install from a hard drive partition. If
not it might be helpful to get a copy of XP for just these kinds of
emergencies.

Not a problem.

You also might want to try a registry error fixer. Probably won't work
though.

Download Registry XP from the JFWLite homepage:
http://jfwlite.com/programs/
and download the CCleaner cleaning tool, to use registry just open up the
program and hit enter on the registry button.

http://CCleaner.com/

Hope this helps -- although it probably won't

Hi William,
Well, that was true until the release of Windows 7. So far I've found
Windows 7 is an extremely impressive Windows release. It is easily as
good as Mac OS in terms of stability, reliability, and performance.
Almost all of the major problems we saw with Vista such as driver
problems, annoying user account control issues, system lag, etc have
been corrected in Windows 7. I think many current XP users will be in
for a very nice surprise when they eventually go to Windows 7. I truly
believe Mac OS, and Linux for that matter, are in for some serious
competition from Windows 7.

Hi Dark,
Well, your problem isn't multiple user accounts. I use several on my
systems with out issue. The root and source of your problems is the
Windows registry. Which, as it happens, is one of the major problems
with Windows in general.
One major feature that sets Windows apart from FreeBSD, Linux, and Mac
OS is the registry. All of the default settings for programs are stored
in a central registry, and as a result if your registry gets damaged, as
it often does, it can easily bring down the entire operating system with
it. One way to prevent this from happening is to purchase and regularly
use a registry repair tool such as Registry Mechanic that performs
weekly repairs on the Registry. If you don't the results can be
extremely desasterous indeed.
So one thing I would ask you is do you have a registry repair tool, and
do you use it regularly if you do? If you don't I highly suggest,
recommend, that you find and purchase one for use in the future. Your
Windows OS will operate much better if you perform regular repairs on
the registry.

Hi,
No operating system is full proof. Mac OS and Linux both have frequent
security updates, and security is often what you make it. Even Windows
can be fairly secure provided the end user running it is remotely
security concious and compitent. If not he or she is likely at faultfor
opening the system to attacks.
Not saying this is always the case, but I've personally seen it enough
to know it is true. I've seen it all from not keeping their antivirus up
to date, running always as admin, using very weak passwords, a poor
firewall, and the list goes on. It probably isn't very nice to say so,
but there are some very stupid people out there when it comes to basic
computer security.

Hi,
Well, the registry is one of Microsoft's biggest mistakes. If you lose
the registry you pretty much lose the entire ball of wax. With Linux
every program, including the operating system, stores settings in *.conf
files. As long as you make a back up of the conf file in question before
editing it chances are you can easily recover and fix whatever changes
you made. Most of the time changing one conf file won't result in nuking
the entire operating system. Although, there are certain conf files you
could screw up the entire operating system with if you weren't careful.

yeah tom I hate the registry.
In old dos days you couldn't really screw the system.
even if you mangled your autoexec and config files you could in later versions
6x and over be able to bypass those and boot into a bare system, ofcause
windows is a bit more complex than that.

Any way to restore the registry with a backup you previously made before
making the last changes to the registry? Just a thought.

Hi.

I have a small problem, well actually a rather large! problem.

During installation of Java I happened to notice msn explorer was stil on
my compter. I attempted to remove it in add/remove programs and by mistake
removed outlook express.

no problem I thought time for a system restore

However, that's when things went very! wrong.

When windows xp restarted, a random window appeared, then it restarted
with a default user profile.

After several restarts, another go at a system restore and lots of
swearing, I read the random window with ms narrator.

Said random window says:

windows cannot load the user's profile but logued you on with the
default profile for the system. the system has attempted to load or
restore a file into the registry but the specified file is not in a
registry file format

Needless to say, this is a baad! state of affiars, and what's worse,
outlook express is stil awol!

Luckily I A, have this laptop to communicate etc with, and B, have backups
of everything on my external harddrive.

Stil, the idea of starting everything from scratch on the default profile
is pretty hiddeus in terms of amount of work, pluss I'm not sure what
I'd be unable to access from my old user profile.

Normally, I'd phone dolphin tech support with this sort of issue, but
they're not open at weakends, and I'd prefer this fixed Asap.

while I know this isn't a tech support list, I'd really! appreciate some
help from some of the cleverer people here so as to get this sorted out.

If people would prefer to take this off list, just E-mail me on
d...@xgam.org.

Any help much and distinctly appreciated.

Btw, as I said, I'm using windows xp. Luckily hal, though not my
individual settings or installs of dolphin orphius, is accessible from the
default profile, so poking around windows will at least be possible.

sorry again for this, but I am rather stuck here.

all the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Before performing the system restore did you by chance make a restore
point to go back to just in case the system restore failed? If so you
should go in to system restore and select the latest restore point you
have and try and undo some of the changes made by the system restore.
As for fixing Outlook Express that is a fairly easy problem to resolve.
All you needed to do was go to the Microsoft web site and download the
Internet Explorer setup and reinstall Internet Explorer 7 or 8. After
that it should install Outlook Express.

P.S.

Ever thought about using Mozilla Thunderbird? It is much safer and more
secure than Outlook Express and works fairly well with Jaws 10 and
Window Eyes 7.11.

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread dark

Hi tom.

I initially tried to restore things to a restore point created yesterday
afternoon, that was what caused the problem.

I've just tried to restore to a point created on the 28th of
september, - and exactly the same thing has happened.

as for backing up the registry, this is something I've actually never done,
in fact I always assumed system restore would sort that type of thing out.

I personally never muck about with the registry at all.

anymore suggestions?

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

2009-10-10 Thread Tristan B

Hi Dark,

I will outline the steps you will need to take, if you can use that
(secondary) user account to full capacity:

1. Since Outlook Express is part of the Internet Explorer 6 package, you
will have to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, or in your case you may
have to downgrade from IE 7 or 8.

Here is the link to download Internet Explorer + Outlook Express 6.0 SP 1
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.mspx

2. SSave the download and try to run it on the secondary user account. Lets
hope this works... (And do not, fiddle around with anything during the
install/downgrade process :-p)

Hope this helps.

Hi Dark,
Ouch! That really is a serious problem, and one kind of hard to fix via
e-mail. Without actually standing there looking at your system it is
pretty hard to say what is wrong, give advice and or solutions, when I
can't eyeball the status of your system firsthand.
I'm sure there is probably a solution here, but never the less it may be
easier to reformat the system. A good product recovery doesn't hurt now
and then anyway. It just means you are starting out with a fresh
install, clean registry, and whatever is screwing up your system
restores will be hopefully fixed. If you can't or don't want to do a
product recovery you'll have to find someone over there to try and
reverse the problem.

Hi tom.

I initially tried to restore things to a restore point created
yesterday afternoon, that was what caused the problem.

I've just tried to restore to a point created on the 28th of
september, - and exactly the same thing has happened.

as for backing up the registry, this is something I've actually never
done, in fact I always assumed system restore would sort that type of
thing out.

I personally never muck about with the registry at all.

anymore suggestions?

Re: [Audyssey] Crysis!

Hi Dark,
Okay...That's something of a big problem. I know you said you don't have
an XP cd, but do you have a product recovery partition on your hard drive?
I ask because most new computers don't come with installation disks any
more. With my Compaq laptop I have to install Vista from a product
recovery partition already present on the laptop's hard drive. There is
an option to burn it to a cd or dvd, but by and large it is done by
starting up the computer and running the install from a hard drive
partition. If not it might be helpful to get a copy of XP for just these
kinds of emergencies.

I'd really rather not reformat if I can avoid it, not the least
because I don't have a windows xp disk and it'd mean taking my
computer 100 miles back to Nottingham to get it done.

as for user accounts, I hate! the things, sinse every single
problem my pc has ever had has derived from them.

I didn't actually remove outlook express while installing java, -
I installed Java and the access bridge first, this just randomly
happened when i attempted to fix that removal with a system restore
unfortunately.
