All of those games could easily be ported to powerbasic, even the dos
games, which would make them runable on windows, with very little work.
I've ported all kinds of quick basic, gw basic, and others to powerbasic,
and it's trivially easy. If someone could get ahold of Jim's source, I'd
be more than happy to do the conversions, just so all Jim's hard work
doesn't have to go by the wayside.

so I'd love to see stats for powerbasic.
I don't know a line of basic myself though :(.

If those were written with vb6, it may be possible to build them with

As far as I know, there hasn't really been anyone remaking Jim's
games, but agarchive.net has a page with the old games in the
Developers section.

2012-12-05 Thread Ibrahim Gucukoglu

Hi Jewel.

I believe I wrote to you off list with my suggestions and a link to download
my uploaded Interpreters collection. For reference though, I attach my
reply to your message below:

Hi Jewel.

OK, please download the interpreters by clicking on the following link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7o1s3fll841k12o/interpreters.zip
Once you’ve extracted the same, you will have everything you need to start
playing and enjoying these classics.

Colossal Cave was the defining game that put Adventuring of this kind on the
map and in to the public domain, however Infocom games are far richer in
atmosphere and have much deeper plot development along with the complexity
required to challenge even the most ardent puzzle solver.

If you are using Windows, you have two choices. Filfre which is the
interpreter I recommend presently due to its working on my Windows 7 64-bit
installation with JAWS 13, or WinFrotz which has the community divided, some
saying it works well and others not at all. WinFrotz is the better
interpreter of the two for a couple of reasons; Firstly it supports all the
ZCode versions and secondly it has more viewing customisation options
including an ability to use a text to speech SAPI engine to output text.
Filfre on the other hand works exceedingly well with JAWS and is preferred
if you intend on using the JAWS cursor to review the outputted text. The
one issue with Filfre I have reported to the author concerns game text
disappearing should the game abruptly end. To give a couple of examples, in
the game Suspended when you die, the game quits abruptly without giving you
the option to save, restore etc. As soon as the game ends, the last
displayed text disappears so you never know what happened to cause the game
to end. This should be fixed in a future update and I will of course let
you all know when that becomes available as soon as I know.

All the best and please, don't hesitate to get back in touch should you need
further help.

All the best and happy adventuring, Ibrahim.

Hi Jewel,

In order to play the ZCode games by Infocom etc you will need a
Windows interpreter like Winfrotz which is a separate download to play
them.

Cheers!

 familiar.
Obviously, that was written for sighted players. Has any totally-blind one
found a way of doing the
 same?
The colossal Cave is the only infocom game I have played and that was in

I would like to have a crack at the ones you made available, but how do you

Is the winfrotz a separate program that I have to download? When I try to

You should not need to attach Microsoft Anna to my games. My games by default

working and is set as your computer's default voice, it should be working. You

When I got the new computer, I downloaded them from kitchensinc and reinstalled

Having just one voice is a real drag.
I may scrap them and start from scratch.

You should not need to attach Microsoft Anna to my games. My games by default
are set to use your

your computer's default

Thanks, re: infocom, but, no worries - while don't play those types of games
too often, do have winfrotz, filfor etc. here, and also have like a DHTML

just don't get around to it often enough...smile

Reminds me, must also spend bit more time playing around with colossal cave

Hi Kimberly,

I have been told that Windows 7 64 bit has 2 program files folders. One is
just program files and
the other is something like program files x86. So my game of life and the game
menu go into one and
the rest of my games go into the other. So find the other folder and copy all
of those files into
the folder with the game of life and the gamemenu.exe file.

Sorry that my games do not install properly for Windows 7 64 bit like they did
for XP etc.

Have a good Thanks giving dinner.

FYI, that is a feature of User Account Control under Vista, Win 7,

Hi Jim,

Windows XP does not have User Account Control. UAC was added in

That is why Windows XP has a little more flexibility in accessing

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games...problem

2012-05-10 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Johnny,

A new sapi5? Not sure what that means, but may I ask, do the sapi5 voices work
like in the control panel and or with any other applications? They are not the
real speak voices that come with JFW right?

Below are all of the fixes that I know of for the sapi5 speech.

The first thing that I would try would be the DelUserLex.exe file that you can
find on my free windows sapi5 text to speech games page, as well as on the GW
Micro and Freedom Scientific sites. It is a strange file in that it doesn't
say or seem to do anything, but it did fix my sapi5 voices.

Here is another fix that I was told about.
Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Speech
Then, press enter on Sapisvr.exe. It won't say anything, but it should
correct the control panel entries for Sapi.

Another thing that you can do is to use the Windows XP restore feature to
restore your computer back to a date when the voices were working.

And then there is to use your Windows XP cd to repair the entire sapi5 text to
speech engine.

you can download (SpeechSDK51MSM.exe).
which contains all of the Microsoft Sapi voices available for Windows XP from

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Laurel,

You have to arrow to the file you want to run and press the context
menu key which performs a right click on the file. The context key is
the key between the right Windows key and right control key on most
laptops and desktops. Once the context menu is up just arrow to run as
administrator.

Now, keep in mind the installation directory largely depends on if you
have a 32-bit version of Windos or a 64-bit version of Windows. If you
have a 32-bit version install the files to
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc
and if you have a 64-bit computer the files should go in
c:\Program Files (x86)\Kitchensinc.

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-23 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

FYI. Just a quick clarification here. The reason Windows 7 and some
versions of Vista have two different Program Files directories is for
backwards compatibility with older 32-bit software. All newer
applications---that is all 64-bit applications---are installed to
c:\Program Files
by default, but older 32-bit applications such as your games are installed to
c:\Program Files (x86)
because they were compiled for the older x86 processors and not the
x64 processors of today. Basically, that second Program Files
directory is there for backwards compatibility sake, and isn't
specific to Windows 7 either. Every 64-bit version of Windows has this
convention.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-23 Thread Trouble
The reason the install went to the correct directory is the program
was coded for that one and windows was just following rules for 32bit programs.
The extra files are done through a zip file install that has a target

have the correct install path.

I decided I really wanna try out Jim's kitchensinc games! I think they
will be lots of fun. I have a question though. I am running Windows
Vista, and I installed the winkit folder and followed all the
instructions there. Now, I'm at the part where I have to find the
game/games I want and install them. It says that I need to go to the
name of the file/game, hit inter and then do a run as administrator
so that it will install propperly and I will be able to play. The only
problem, is I can't find the run as adminastrator option, so I'm not
sure how to make it work. Can y'all tell me what to do? /smiles/
Thanks,
Laurel and Stockard

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-22 Thread Laurel
ok, sense you seem like you know how to do this, then let me ask you
this. /smiles/ I click on the game file, then I see the options run
save or cancel. I click on run. Then Windows asks me if I want
to run this again so I click run. Then I get to the part where I
have to unzip the files, and I hit unzip, and it says I can't do that.
I can't get past that point. Suggestions?
Thanks,
Laurel and Stockard

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-22 Thread Bryan Peterson
Problem is that the UAC will still cause issues even if you do that. You
still have to either run as administrator, which you can do by right
clicking the name of the file you want to run and then hit run as
administrator, or turn UAC off. To do this Laurel, you need to be in
settings, control panel and users.

Instead of hitting enter on that file. Use the application key or
right click on it. Then you will see run as adman. after that the run
option will come up and just run it. Keep doing that until you have
all you want installed.

Should I select the file first and then find the run as admin option

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just kind of confused and wanna make

application key it will show me the run as administrator option.
Should I select the file first and then find the run as admin option
when it asks me if I wanna run, save or cancel? Or should I find run
as admin before I even hit enter. And the other option is if I go to
my control pannel and disable the user account control permission
 thingy.
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just kind of confused and wanna make
 sure I do this correctly.

Re: [Audyssey] kitchensinc games - installation question

2011-11-22 Thread dark

Hi Laurel.

The applications key is usually one next to the right control on most
keyboards.

it's hugely useful, sinse in windows it gives you a list of stuff you can do
with a selected item, like copy it, paste it, unzip it if it's zipped etc,
it even works on links in brousers too which is great if you want to copy
links somewhere.

I'd heartily recommend you make use of the key as it's really handy for
general computer use, games or not.

Beware the grue!

Hi jim in the game of Spanker how about making the women more dominant and
they spank the men for pleasure in the game or you can make the men also
spank the women you should have that choice in the game for a man to spank a
woman or a woman to spank a man. Plus you can add phrases for example give
it to me baby, Your going to be punnished, or come here and serve me now,
spank me more, oh yeah baby that feels good, do you want me etc.
Make sure the spanking sound has a whipping sound to it so they feel the
pain of being spanked and more pleasure. Also add the sexual turn on words
if you know what I am talking about
that's my suggestions for this game. If this game turns out the way it
supposed this would be the first blind man's porno game. I also enjoy this
game as well.

Hi Jason,

In spanker you are always the spanker right? So right now men and women are
spanking women. When I add men, women and men can also then spank men right?

I do have allot of spanking sounds that I recorded. I think that I have used
the best that I have, but will listen to them all again.

Don't know how much I can add comments in to the game as it is also all about
reaction time after the woman says Hi but I will see what I can add when I
finish the new live action game that I am now working on and go back to work on
Spanker.

Hello. I think those sounds are good. just like the game bop it, you
really can't put comments in because of the quickness of the reaction time.

 Hi Jason,

In spanker you are always the spanker right? So right now men and women
are spanking women. When I add men, women and men can also then spank men
right?

I do have allot of spanking sounds that I recorded. I think that I have
used the best that I have, but will listen to them all again.

Don't know how much I can add comments in to the game as it is also all
about reaction time after the woman says Hi but I will see what I can add
when I finish the new live action game that I am now working on and go back
to work on Spanker.

Hi Thomas,

Well I got ten out of ten in Hangman using the regular word list. I did
however miss one on the adult list so went 9 for 10 on it.

BTW If you are still ticked, I've got another challenge for you.

250 swats with an average reaction time of .4064 seconds
for a total score of 61520.

That is my all time record though. I didn't just do that this morning.

Hi,
Well, in hangman last night I made 10 out of 10 as well. So we are now tied.
As for Spanker, sheesh, I am not even close to reaching your record.

Hi Wil,

You know I was actually thinking about another version of Spanker after the
current game that I am working on. It would include the part that the ladies
have been asking me for. grin I am going to need sound files for it though.

Hi Thomas,

Hmmm, I will have to see if I can get seventy percent on hangman. I normally
get 100 percent, but that is only because I most often play with the adult word
list and it is much easier because one has a mind set when playing that list.

Hi,
Well, Spanker is fun. It is based off a Bop It style of play where you
use the arrow keys to swing left, right, and center. Girls will say Hi
and you try to spank their butts asfast as you can by swinging towards
the sound of their voice.

Yeah, I really like Monopoly 7and NFL 3 myself. Out of the Kitchensinc games
those are probably the two I play the most. Of late I have gotten in to
playing hangman allot. I am not a great speller, but I have always had a bit
of a knack of solving those kind of word puzzles.
Yesterday I got 7 out of 10 words correct in hangman. Pretty good odds.
That is a 70% accuracy. Sometimes if I am altogether with the program I can
get as high as 100 % accuracy.

Hi Blind Guy

No I was not serious. It is actually just a bunch of the smallest sound files
that I had so that they could play very quickly like that. And then have
multiple instances of them playing at the same time. I don't know though
sometimes random noise like that clears my brain. Some times I also like to
press the f9 key in my waver program.

Random order is an oxymoron.
