You level 1 strength for every warrior you defeat, and maybe renigades
as well, I'm not sure.

There's no in game notification, but to find out what level you are just
type level. This will also tell you whether your a neutral, honourable, or
evil warrior, though you'll know pretty quick if your evil sinse
everyone wil try to kill you!

Hi liam.

Well, as you'll gather, I'm stil mid play myself, but for starting out I
probably can offer some tips.

First you shouldn't actually attempt combat until your A, an honourable
warrior, B, are proficient in knife throwing, and C, have a decent weapon,
ie an axe or better stil a sword.

It also really helps if you know and recognize the warrior and can be
pretty

certain you've got a good chance of beating him, plus talking to warriors
gets you some handy hintgs and info, as indeed does talking to
peasants, especially at the start of the game sinse salve for healing
wounds

is comparatively expensive.

Personally I began buy buying a knife, pack, 10 food and canteen then
went

to a hunting place which you get hints about, though I'll write it's
loacation at the bottom of here just in case you want to speed things up
slightly at the beginning of the game, also that hint only showed up
once for me for some reason.

When I had enough cash (and some knife throwing experience), i was able to
afford first a lamp, oil and bottle, sinse if you don't have these by
day 15 and the time the felven appear your pretty much dead, and an axe.
This should be enough to begin fighting warriors and go exploring.

I'll also offer one more hint. though buying armor, a sword and a burro is
a

must, don't be too quick to spend more cash, sinse imho the most helpful
item can be bought in a slightly less obvious place, and I was actually
very

sorry I bought another item and didn't buy it earlier in the game sinse it
makes things a lot easier and much more fun.

The learning curve is incredibly steep, but it is fun when you get going,
though rather a pest in parts, yet it's one of these games that's actually
quite hard to put down.

Hi.

Yep, on my one occasion getting into the cave I did notice the leaches of
doom.

The problem is for some very odd reason, I'm not sure what triggers that
stairway down to appear or not, it just seems to randomly appear or not at
some points, which is a litle frustrating.

To be honest at the moment I'm making my way back to the hole in the wall

try the maze there and hopefully get a silver key, sinse that will get me
into a lot more dungeons.

I don't particularly need the money, I've got a good 900 ralls from

there seems to be something odd going on though. i can walk through
several passages, one of which has a huge door with a symbol on

I can't unlock the door, in fact the game doesn't even seem to

Once, when walking through one passage near the door I happened to

Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough darkwater cave stuck?

2009-01-12 Thread Shadow Dragon
I have to say this is probably one of the tougher puzzles in the game. And
its going to be rather hard to give a hint for without giving the solution
away, but I can try I suppose.

Possible Spoiler

It does involve that stairway leading down. The game doesn't acknowledge the
door as a door because there's a special way you have to open it. You'll
need to actually go down into the cave. The only hint I can think to give is
that you'll need to keep your strength up and have a fair amount of luck
down there. Hth, and good luck!

Hi.

well I've got into darkwater cave, or at least into the dome.

there seems to be something odd going on though. i can walk through
several passages, one of which has a huge door with a symbol on it
which lead to a dead end, the symbol on the door just seems to be a
sign of where the dead end is.

I can't unlock the door, in fact the game doesn't even seem to
recognize that there is a door there at all.

Once, when walking through one passage near the door I happened to see a
stairway down, but like an idiot I'd not bought my lamp so couldn't
head down there.

I'm not sure though what the heck triggered this to appear, or whether
indeed it just turned up at random.

does anyone have any idea how I can get into the cave?

I'd really like that wherering.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Dark,
Perhaps this is just me, but I haven't ever noticed much of the item
handling difficulties you describe. I keep all my ralls and food and such
in a sack, and only take out what I need at the time. Granted, I haven't
progressed quite as far as you have, it seems, but still, I don't have much

Hi.

I do actually have a backpack (it was one of the ways I initially made
cash while hunting, but I stil seem to have to drop everything to take
food or my canteen out of my pack.

It's just the amount of typing and turns lost that is plain annoying,
as I said, it killed me in the desert.

I'll try forod cave again, Though imho it's verry irritating (not to
say illogical), that you can't get out by moving in one direction and
back, but i hope it doesn't take too long getting out sinse I'm not sure
if I can carry the ikon and enough supplies, - again, something which
would be nicely fixed by automatically being able to cary 8 lb food and
one canteen.

It's a real shame the source is lost, sinse this really does spoil the
game imho.

A silver amulet hint would I think help, - though it's probably in one
of the places I just haven't been to yet such as ishon (where I'm heading
now).

One thing I do like about eamon is it's really short commands and
abbreviations, - which even existed in the early 80's versions,
for instance just pressing enter to repeat the current turn, typing a gob
to attack a goblin or eat food etc. Something of this sort in
fallthrough, or the ability to write macros would really improve the
game. But again, sadly lost source code, even if the game could be
altered.

Re: [Audyssey] Fallthrough item handling annoyence?

2009-01-10 Thread Shadow Dragon
You need a backpack, it sounds like. There's no real reason to take money
into a dungeon, just FYI. My basic dungeon crawling kit generally goes as
thus:

Weapons: Sword, spear, knife, bow and at least 10 arrows.
Food and Drink: At least 1 canteen, and 20 pounds of food. It'll all fit
into your backpack along with the arrows, I believe.
Misc: Flint, a lamp, one bottle of lamp oil, 5 ounces of salve, and any
other light on-hand items like amulets or rings.

I believe the backpacks are sold in Orn. They can hold quite a bit, and if
I'm remembering right that shouldn't overburden your character. If there's
something valuable down in the dungeon, I generally leave what supplies I
can down in the room where it was, and haul the items out to my burrow, then
retrieve the supplies.

The dungeon on Forod seems to have no real direct relation to the game. I'm
thinking it was either an incomplete dungeon tossed in and forgotten or a
dungeon put in as an afterthought for no real purpose other than to hide
treasure. It's a little tricky, but you can retrieve some of the treasure
from it with a bit of luck. The sign seems to hint that if you move in one
direction for long enough you'll eventually get back to the entrance.

As for crossing the desert, I'll save you the time and frustration, and I'm
sure you'll thank me for this later, but don't bother. It's a very, very
long haul, I believe it took me 6 full canteens and at least 150 pounds of
food to get across and some very careful planning, and there's nothing over
there. At all. Most of the desert is just empty coordinates with not even
hunting or desert warriors to break up the manotany. It does have its
purposes though, which I won't give away.

Also, I just remembered something about the silver amulet. There is a way to
get it without killing peasants, in fact I'm not sure if you can ever get it
from killing a peasant, it could be a random chance or it could just be a
taunt to get you to kill peasants and lose honor. You seem to always lose
the trinket after slaughtering anyone carrying one. If you want me to give
you a hint on wear to find it, let me know. That one was kind of frustrating
to find as well even with the hint I got from a warrior, but its workable
and necessary.

Hi.

I don't actually know what the problem is, but I can hold barely any items
in hand at once.

If I'm holding a sword, lamp, flint, knife 20 ralls, 5 salve and a navaid,
(imho the basic dungeon going kit), I can't hold much food in hand at all,
much less my canteen.

Imho the game would've done really well from an item such as a napsack for
carrying just 7 lb food and a full canteen, from which you could instantly
use the drink and eat commands in any locale so long as you had water and
food left in it, that would really speed things up.

I've found the ring maker in forod who exchanges rubies for rings,
and have been told that a bronze ring is the key to thon, but haven't been
told anything else as yet, I suppose if I can get another ruby somehow
I'll try that.

The only thing about amulets I've been told is that "The silver way
touches many setlements" where as "The gold way starts at targ" but i'm
not sure what either of these mean as yet.

But there are stil places I haven't been yet so there's more to
find, - hopefully.

I'm hoping a where ring will let me cross areas like the desert more
easily (where I died despite having 3 canteens of water and lots of food
on my burro), I'm also planning to buy a flyr when I get the cash but am
stil rather short, which is another reason I want to get into another

speaking of dungeons, I do have a direct question. I tried The cave in

didn't seem to go in a streight line even! I walked forward for a bit and
actually found a sil ikon, but then walking backwards I couldn't get out
at all which was annoying!

Oh well, I'll try again, I was just rather frustrated.

Hi

On the one hand I'm enjoying the game, on the other the carrying
capacity bit is driving me up the wall#!

I've died of hunger or thirst numerous times sinse it simply takes me too
many command to drop all my belongings, take my food or canteen from my
burro, drink or eat it, and pick everything up again!

it's really annoying as I've been to some great places! At the moment I'm
looking for a way to get a silver amulet, sinse that seems to be the next
step, but other than chopping up peasants there's no way I can think
of getting it.

It's also mildly irritating to have to travel to a location just to see
what's there (admittedly the traveling being fun), then having to go to a
random location and pick up items, eg my cape and two extra canteens
which I bought to traverse the desert, then after I determined I really
couldn't go into the desert until I'd got some other stuff (sinse i kept
dying of exhaustion), have them take up carrying capacity, --- which even
on a burrow seems remarkably limited when I'm visiting many places.

I'll percevear though, sinse I really want to get enough money for a
flyr, and I'd deffinately like to go to more dungeons, sinse other than
slavhos, the only other place I found was the cave in forod, which
seemed impossible to get out of, even when I only went one direction and
retraced my steps. This was why I bought the navaid, but it doesn't
seem to help there.

I've got them and played them with winfrotz. If people are worried about

Hi.

well, I think I've solved the fallthrough problem. thanks to Zac telling
me

where the status line was, I can now check my typing. What seemed to be
happening was a symple case of my typing speed being too fast for the doss
program to keep up with, - lol!

I'll now go and check the info more carefully and see about figuring the
game out. I'll also see about creating a page for it on audiogames.net.

Btw, if anyone else recognizes any of the games at
http://www.classicgaming.com/ascii/ as good, or playable, or both, I'd be
interested to know.

they mostly concentrate on aski roguelikes, but have some others as well
such as fallthrough and anacreon, which i'm sure I remember someone
talking about.

Perhaps people who played those dos games could give us some suggestions?

Subject: [Audyssey] Fallthrough fixed, I hope.

Hi.

well, I think I've solved the fallthrough problem. thanks to Zac telling me
where the status line was, I can now check my typing.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough

2009-01-01 Thread dark

Hi Zac.

I doubt it's the virtual focus, sinse when in vf mode nothing whatsoever
keystroke wise gets transmitted to the application, i actually have to
togle vf on or off betwene reading the screen and typing (though after
almost 7 years of playing text adventures, this is pretty much a reflex
reaction by now).

I did wonder if it was the game speed though, sinse it only seems to be
tracking some text character in put.

I'll have another go, and also try it on my desktop when i get back to my
flat on saturday.

the intro document and review both look great.

Hi Dark,
This doesn't sound familiar at all, I'm afraid. I use Window-Eyes
myself, and never had any problems of the sort you describe. Perhaps its
a consequence of Hal'sVirtual Focus getting things confused somehow?
(That ' in or'gn might be an issue, I have no idea.)
Also, reading the notice with "read notice" is exactly what you want to
type. Keep in mind that when the game displays error messages, as well as
certain other text, it waits for you to press C to continue and refuses to
acknowledge your typing anything else until you do so.
I'm sorry I'm not more helpful here. The only real advice I can give
you is to make sure that you've typed and the game has recorded exactly
what you wanted to type. (It might help to reread the second line of the
screen, where user commands are echoed.)
I do hope you can figure Fallthru out. It's one of those very neat
games, in my opinion, and worth the trouble.

Best and do let us know what you find out.
Yours,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] fallthrough

2009-01-01 Thread dark

Hi Zac.

The basic problem is I was attempting to type commands and the game didn't
seam to acknolidge them correctly.

for instance I was trying to read the notice at the first starting location
with the obvious "read notice" and the game for some reason would assume I'd
put in a directional command.

I also tried info or'gn to get info on the city, and got responses like "I
don't understand or" or "I don't understand O"

I'm mildly confused as to this, sinse I didn't have this difficulty running
Eamon delux at all, - actually I can wiz through Eamon combats pretty
fast these days.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Perhaps if there are compatibility issues, as I said, maybe Louis Briant
could help with this one too?

Hi Dark,
Could you maybe elaborate a little bit on what exactly your problem is?
(The command syntax of Fallthru is generally close to Textadventurese,
with a few noteable exceptions such as the handling of containers and a
few odd preference issues, such as take instead of get, which can
fortunately be abbreviated to tk.)
I have some experience in fiddling with the game and can help if
necesary. I'm just not sure what exactly you're doing and what you're
expecting to happen, let alone what's actually happening.

Cheers,
Zack.

Okay, i've tried fallthrough, but my commands don't seem to be being
picked up properly. H, maybe Louis could do the same here as he's
done for some other dos games and make the interface a bit more smooth?

either that, or I'm doing something wonky in running the thing. ditto
with anacrion, though the menues there and random command history made
things even more weerd.
