[ilugd] [Commercial] SFLC, India, needs system administration support
Hi, The Indian wing of the Software Freedom Law Centre (SFLC), http://www.softwarefreedom.org/ , is looking for commercial system administration support for its office. o Details of requirements: * Most of the required services are already set up, and the need is for continued management, and support of these services * Most work can be done remotely, but there will be an occasional need for on-site support, at a mutually-agreed time. * Support will include the following items: - A local mail server, with a few accounts (less than 10, at the moment), and fairly low volumes. - A locally-hosted SVN setup - Setting up of VPNs to a few external locations. - Management of the Internet connections, including automated fail-over. SFLC currently has two Internet broad-band connections from Airtel (main connection), and MTNL (backup). - The local network includes a server, two desktops, and a laptop. These all run Debian, or Ubuntu. Server maintenance, upgrade, and security is a priority. While SFLC staff are conversant with the Linux desktop, there might be occasional support requests for desktop issues that might require an on-site visit. The volume of such requests will be low, certainly under one visit/week. o How to apply: * Please contact Prasanth (copied on this message) directly, and copy me at least on the initial message. * One can apply as an individual, or as a company. * You should provide: - A company profile, if applying as a company. - Resume(s) of people that would be working on providing support. In particular, please include details on experience in system administration work - Preferrably a formal service level agreement, but at least an indication of response time for support requests. - Expected remuneration. If you want that, I would suggest looking at programmes like the Google Summer of Code: http://code.google.com/soc/ . Alternatively, as Nandeep pointed out, you need to narrow down your focus still further: An interest in algorithms could mean almost anything. * First, pick an area. From the above description of your interests, it could be, say, databases, or kernel-level programming. * Identify a FOSS project in the area. E.g., for databases, you could look at: - MariaDB, which is derived from mysql. - Any of the various NoSQL databases that are coming up. Graph databases, for example, are interesting and potentially can be used in many areas. * Look through the roadmap for the project, and see if you can find a small project that interests you. * Once you have a decent idea of what you want to do, you can ask for guidance on the project mailing list. It makes sense to lurk on the list for a while, so as to get a feel for the project. * Another way of quickly getting involved is to look at bugs in the project's issue tracker, and start trying to solve them. This is a good way to get familiar with the code, and to gain some credentials with the project. I have always been confused about this air gap business: Is it then OK to have some RF transponder, e.g. WiFi (no idea if bandwidth requirements can be met), bridging the gap. Well, the air gap here conceptually precedes WiFi technologies and refers to a physical disconnect between two separate networks. If you bring WiFi, RF and microwaves into the picture, maybe we should be talking about a plastic/lead wall gap. Ungles, plastic se kuchh nahin hota hai. Lead, yes. In other words, the air gap essentially exists to prevent the organisation's PSTN/VoIP network interacting with a network belonging to any other entity, be it the Internet, another organisation or even an individual. I have quite a few old-but-still-working hard disks lying about, from 2.1GB to 500GB. I also have an old P3 machine lying about and was wondering if I could put them to use to get a toy media server out of it and in the process get some actual experience with doing fun things like flipping a hard disk's power supply on and off while writing data to a RAID. Problem is that the number of drive bays is far smaller than the 4 hard disks I want to fit inside. I've seen aluminium brackets that can be screwed into a 5.25 drive bay that can hold a 3.5 hard disk. Anyone know where I can buy some of those? [...] You should be able to get these with a little scrounging-around at Nehru Place. They are also quite easy to machine, if it comes to that. Your bigger problem is going to be power: It is unlikely that the power supply of an old P3 machine will support many disks. Second problem is the number of available IDE slots, though one could purchase PCI IDE cards. [ilugd] Detections of GPL violations, and compliance efforts
Hello everyone, Are people interested in becoming involved in efforts by SFLC, India in detecting violations of open-source licenses, and in bringing software vendors into compliance? There are largely two parts to this: * The first is looking for violations in binary code, usually in embedded devices. The most common form of violation here is the unauthorised use of BusyBox. As people here might not be familiar with the subject, SFLC, India is willing to arrange a 2-3 day training session with an expert from the US. While the session will be open to all, the expense can be justified only if at least a few people commit some time (say, a few hours/week) to working with SFLC, India on this. * The second part is compliance efforts. Often, these are not antagonistic, i.e., software vendors are willing to have their code audited for licensing violations that they were not aware of. This should be of interest to people working on machine learning, and similarity. There can also be a commercial angle to this: Black Duck software, for example, has (closed-source) commercial tools that do this: http://www.blackducksoftware.com/learn/open-source-compliance Please note that in both cases above, the intent is to bring violators into compliance, and *not* to spawn litigation. If you are interested, please follow up here. Especially for the first part, the training session will happen only if there is sufficient committed interest.
