[JAWS-Users] Re: Windows Media Player and JAWS
I upgraded to WMP11 but was already using JAWS8 when i did so. It works fine, though some minor things are configured a little differently and there is extra DRM protection over WMP10 (I believe). If you do upgrade to WMP11 and are not happy with it, you can uninstall it. - Original Message - From: carlene knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, May 27, 2007 7:00 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows Media Player and JAWS Hi: I would like to know if anybody has had any experience with Media Player 11 in conjunction with JFW? [JAWS-Users] Re: jaws losing focus
I have also found this, (and think it's a bug, or something I thought had been fixed before), when reading or getting into RSS feeds. Hit Windows+m a few times in succession, to get JAWS to speak again, then alt+tab back. Sometimes, it may then be necessary to start SayAll again with a press of Insert+DownArrow. - Original Message - From: Lenny McHugh [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-list jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, May 26, 2007 7:13 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws losing focus Hi all, Since I went to jaws 8 Jaws loses focus when reading web pages. [JAWS-Users] Re: opening up attachments
It usually means you don't have a program that knows the file type, or that your Windows doesn't know what to do (what program to associate with) that file-type. . [JAWS-Users] Re: Interesting Finds in the Recycle Bin
The reason it does this is in case of corruption of present .dbx files, which can happen. While checking my recycle bin the other day, I noticed that there are several files corresponding to the folders I have in my Outlook Express program. They are even named the same, save for a .BAK extension. Obviously, the .BAK extension indicates that this is a back-up copy of my folder files, but why are they in there? I have not deleted any files pertaining to Outlook Express, nor have I run any programs associated with Outlook Express, so I'm wondering how they got there, and if there's a way to turn this feature off? While I don't mind that these files are being backed up, it does me no good if they are going directly to my recycle bin, as I may delete them at a crucial time when I do need them. I have checked out the properties of these files, and all they tell me is that their origins are Outlook Express and nothing more. If people could check to see if they are experiencing this, I would very much appreciate it. The only thing I have installed since this started happening are the normal Windows and Microsoft updates, but none of them mentioned doing anything to Outlook Express. They were all, either Windows updates, or Microsoft Office Outlook updates. If it helps any, I am using XP home edition, Jaws 7 and Outlook Express 6. Any ideas? [JAWS-Users] Re: a b y
You probably have a (demo) version of Abbyy FineReader. It is an OCR program, which you would mostly use with an ATTACHED scanner. It would also be able to recognise images, and (if necessary as in most cases concerning us) convert text into a readable form [that is, ignore pictures, or similar]. I have not had experience, however, of FineReader's abilities to recognise and convert images of text files - .prf's, AND SUCH. I think you may require a scanner, to be able to scan the paper printout and so on. (Basically, there are (ought to be) two distinct processes involved: Scanning, and recognition. Finereader does the recognition - or OCR. Photocopies may not be recognised as well as original prints.) (Such physical scanners are relatively cheap, depending on model and where you get one.) Also, with a bit of manipulation, FineReader plus scanner can be got to work with JAWS or any other screen reader. - Original Message - From: JOHN O CARVALHO [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2007 6:28 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] a b y Hi To All, I have a program by the name of a b y reader. better ask AVG support about that, or pay for it. (They don't offer tech support for the free version, so they have to fund it anyway.) It appears that you need to uncheck the incoming and outgoing Certify mail checkboxes. To turn off this annoying AVG Free option, perform the following steps: 1. Open AVG, tab once to the control center button and hit space bar. 2. Use alt plus V to open the view menu and down arrow to the components submenu icon and then hit enter. 3. Down arrow to the email scanner icon and then hit enter. 4. Tab to the configure button and then hit enter. 5. Tab to and uncheck the two Certify mail checkboxes. 6. Now tab to the OK button and enter and then tab to the next Ok button and enter. [JAWS-Users] Re: FS Demo
You would have installed the FSReader Demo and Training in or after the installation of JAWS6. Likewise, in JAWS7 and JAWS8 it comes as one of the last prompts in the installation. perhaps you did not install it with them? There was some difference made to it at the time of JAWS7.0 - and I ascertained that by going in there myself with JAWS8. Many people routinely include their contact details (including their work or business telephone numbers) as part of their email signatures, which may well have been set up to be done automatically at their end. . I've seen telephone numbers given out on bigger lists than this one, and nobody murmured afterwards. It is still worth bearing in mind, though. there is a risk, but iit is comparatively small. [JAWS-Users] Re: Reversing Sleep Mode and Kurzweil Problems
Hi Shirley, It is very unlikely that installing version 11 will cause your present scanner not to work. The actual scanning is done by the scanner and its drivers, itself; it is the OCR that Kurzweil does. To attempt to resolve the Kurzweil 1000 JAWS Configuration problem: 1. From anywhere, open Configuration manager with Insert+6 (that's number 6), [and assuming that the Insert key is your 'JAWS' key - The JAWS key is the relevant operator.] 2. Hit Ctrl+o to open; 3. In the list view of files, keep hitting the letter k until Kurzweil 1000 is highlighted. 4. Open it then. (You are opening the Kurzweil1000.jcf.) 5. Hit Alt+s for Set Options; and the letter a for Advanced; 6. There now is a checkbox, sleep mode enabled, checkbox checked. hit spacebar to uncheck it. 7. Tab over to ok your changes. and hit enter. 8. Hit Ctrl+s to save the change, or agree to save on the way out when you press alt+f4 to exit the Configuration manager. And finally: 9. Contact your friendly Kurzweil 1000 tech support to fix your problems associated with K1000 installation, and scanner. - Original Message - From: Shirley [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, April 16, 2007 1:19 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reversing Sleep Mode and Kurzweil Problems Good evening Everyone! Last Thursday I wanted to scan some information that is not accessible in any other media. It had been several months since I used Kurzweil, but obviously, something is messed up big time. For some unknown reason, when I began to start a scan, I heard a little ding and all speech ceased. I tried everything I could think of to regain speech, but ended up restarting my system. I phoned tech support at Kurzweil, and the nice gentleman there suggested that I download the latest driver for my EPSON scanner. Thanks to a terrific tech support friend at FTP, that was accomplished yesterday. To wipe the slate clean, so to speak, I removed Kurzweil from the control panel, did a disk cleanup, a defrag, then installed Kurzweil again. Initially, it seemed to be working just fine, which thrilled me, and consequently, I followed the steps from the JAWS-Users site to put JAWS to sleep. I think I did it correctly, but unfortunately after refreshing my memory on all the various key functions of Kurzweil, that nasty little ding to begin a scan, totally halted all speech again. In pure frustration, I removed Kurzweil again, but now whenever I alt-tab, Jaws tries to speak, but is abruptly silenced. My question is, How do I reverse the steps of putting JAWS to sleep? I have three versions of JAWS on my computer; 5.1 was the one I used last night, primarily because it has always functioned the best. I have a real aversion to messing with settings, but logic tells me that there must be a way to safely reverse that process. It was suggested that I upgrade Kurzweil from version 7, which is what I have now, to the latest version, which is 11. I am trying to decide now whether to call tech support at Kurzweil again, or wait until my son visits in six weeks. Something tells me that if I upgrade Kurzweil, my scanner will most likely need to be replaced as well. Hopefully, my explanation is understandable. If any of you have advice on any of the above mentioned, please pass it my way. I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks in advance. [JAWS-Users] Re: o e mystry question!
Others have asserted that when messages are deleted from Deleted Items they are deleted permanently. that's the simple answer. In fact, they are still on the computer but not in a usable form, and it is the compaction of all folders process which removes them entirely. If, for instance, you had a corruption problem with one of your .dbx files - one of the OE folders - you might delete that folder and recover an older version of it which would contain some older messages. It's not a straightforward process, however. - Original Message - From: Cathy Boynton [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 13, 2007 5:04 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] o e mystry question! The Internet temp files are located in, c:\documents and settings\(your profile name)\local settings\temporary Internet files. This is where your temp files and cookies are stored. Check Disk Go to run and type in, chkdsk /f (drive letter): and press enter. Note the colon after the drive letter. Unlike running a check disk on your C drive, you won't need to reboot for this to perform. 2. Scan Disk Per form the scan disk just as you would on the C drive, but of course highlighting the drive you want to scan as opposed to the C drive. Then just follow the instructions as you would for the C drive. Again, you won't have to reboot for this to run. 3. Defrag Perform as you would for the C drive but again, highlight the drive you want to defrag. One more step that I didn't include in those instructions is cleaning up the temp files. This should be performed on the C drive. Close all applications with the exception of Jaws. Go to run and type in: %temp% and press enter. Note the percent sign before and after temp. Press enter. This will bring up a list of temp files that you can delete. Do a control A to select all. Now do a shift

[JAWS-Users] Re: block senders list
I would concur with Dave in that only one sender at a time can be removed from the blocked senders list. The messages from blocked senders (without additional steps, such as deleting messages from server) go only into the Deleted items folder. One can from time to time check Deleted items, to see if there were genuine messages caught up in the general spam filttration as well as those that were indubitably spam. - Original Message - From: Victor Gouveia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, April 02, 2007 10:48 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: block senders list Just a question that comes to mind... When you installed Skype, as you may have done recently, during installation did you receive a notification about the Google Toolbar? It would then have installed by default, unless you had unchecked it at that point. Just a theory or a hunch, at this stage, awaiting confirmation. When a Web site requires a Flash player update, it will tell you so. Within the Flash movie content, there will be buttons [Flash movie button, etc.] that you would left-click once to activate. The latest version of Flash player is (I think) Flash player 9. I don't know how versions of JAWS prior to the current version cope with Flash player 9. [JAWS-Users] Reading in one window, doing something in another
A few days ago - was it? - Kerry Ann Ifill was looking for something that could be doing one in one window, while reading something else in another. The solution to that is, so far, called tabbed browsing, which has come into prominence with Firefox and is now in Windows Internet Explorer 7. We might expect to see tabbed browsing become more widespread across Microsoft products, as with office 2007, and indeed more prevalent in Windows Vista; and a consequence of that would probably be the adoption of it for different JAWS tasks. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ Visit the JAWS Users List home page at: http://www.jaws-users.com Address for the list archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/jaws-users-list%40googlegroups.com/ In order to contact the management team simply fill out the following form found at: http://www.jaws-users.com/contact.php You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups JAWS Users List group. A repair of JAWS6 can be done by: Start menu, Programs; JAWS6; alt+t for Tools, then arrow to or hit i for Installation and maintenance. In the ensuing dialogue, down-arrow to choose the Repair radiobutton, and proceed. I don't think repairing JAWS will fix the slowness issue, since it would seem to be more computer-general related; but the above is how you repair earlier versions of JAWS up until recent versions. - Original Message - From: lawrence taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, March 16, 2007 2:33 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Why is Jaws slow to speak? thanks vicky It is an honor to be apart of such a smart group of people. That has been a fault of many JAWS updates in the past also. Your SMA count was not reduced by the update from HJAWS8.0 to the latest, whatever it says. [JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS 8 Update requires a new SMA?
Maybe you can, but I don't think so or I don't know that you can (at this point). however, when the next upgrade is official, you would find a list of serial numbers allowed to download it because of their owners' SMA's. If you are still concerned, perhaps you could email Freedom Scientific and ask them for clarification. - Original Message - From: Demetry [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, March 04, 2007 5:51 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS 8 Update requires a new SMA? [JAWS-Users] Re: question about Jaws Pro
Yes XP home is covered by the JAWS XP pro authorisation; and it is downward compatible. I would have thought that, in a work situation, it is worth the hundreds so that you won't have to reboot every 40 mins. Each forty-minute demo version lasts only six months from date of publishing. You will nneed to have an SMA with JAWS8 to be covered for Vista. I'll let someone else detail that one. - Original Message - From: jason smith To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 10:08 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] question about Jaws Pro Hi everyone, need to ask a question. I was installing Jaws 8.0 onto a desktop at work. This was my first time installing Jaws at work. Until now, I have been using my laptop from home. The installation went fine. When it came to authorize Jaws, I put my authorization disk in and selected the internet option for registration. A message came up, saying that this application, is not authorized to run on: XP Pro, Windows 2000 and Nt. I then remembered, that I only have Jaws standard. Until now, that is all I have needed, as I run Windows XP Home, on my desktop at home and Windows ME on(my now old) laptop. My local Jaws distributor, says I can upgrade my Jaws to the Jaws Pro version, for about $270-$370(I have forgotten the exact price). That is Australian dollars, so don't pass out with the price all you American users smile. My question is, what does Jaws Pro have, that Jaws Standard doesn't? I know I can just keep running Jaws in 40 minute mode on the work computer and just reboot, to get another 40 minutes. Is there a limit to how many 40 minute demoes you can do? I can get most of my work needs done by doing that. However, i am thinking that most other work places will have XP Pro as well. Therefore, I am wondering if it is just as well upgrading to Jaws Pro. I suppose too, that Windows Vista, will start to become more widely used over the next few years or so too. Would upgrading to Jaws Pro now, cover me for Windows Vista too, or is that not known yet? If I do go with Jaws Pro, is it downwards compatible i.e will I be able to run it on my home desktop, which is only running Windows XP Home and not Pro? [JAWS-Users] Re: Is this page accessible?
In case it isn't clear how you turn off pop-ups, which you would do for this site, in Internet Explorer you hit alt+n. [JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list
The JAWS implementation of Eloquence could be improved in minor ways, like lengthening the punctuation pauses to make them sound more likea natural reader. This would make it more comfortable for the user reading longer documents. It would also make it possible for the user to increase the speech rate a good deal more than at present, while maintaining speech comprehension. - Original Message - From: Dale Leavens To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, February 18, 2007 3:45 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: glad to be on the list How is it so difficult to understand that is the compromise? It takes a lot more code to be executed and a lot more memory to be accessed to provide very high quality human sounding speech. This takes time and computer processor cycles. There is a reason why super sonic jet fighters are very small and not well suited to hauling cargo. It might be possible to get similar performance out of a wide body passenger jet with enough effort but the example of Concord demonstrates people aren't willing to pay for it. In this day and age for sure blind people are not willing to pay for that level of performance, what I constantly hear is that blind people aren't happy about paying for current levels of performance. Sorry moderator if this is verging on the limits of list topic. It seems though that we are unsure about what it is we require from our access technology, access, versatility, speed, luxury or just what? Be careful what you wish for. Our scanning and reading software hasn't brought us any real advances in print reading for at least a decade. It does give us all sorts of voices and dictionaries and buggy access to already available libraries which many of us are refused access to but the actual reading capability depends on other software providers like Abbey. For my money I would prefer screen access technology which gives me reliable screen access to all of the functions of my computer and so long as it is intelligible I'll accept that until the primary functions are achieved. When we no longer have queries about scripts to be able to use this or that, when all Web sites are rendered intelligible, when Word or Access or Visual Basic and other IDES work for us then is the time to worry about absolute language perfection. Version 8.0 of Jaws shipped on cd with the RealSpeak Solo voices on a seperate cd. Everyone should be clear on the fact that these voices are not a part of the Eloquence synthesizer that ships with Jaws. The voices available at Nextup.com, are Sappi compliant voices that will work with Jaws. Sappi is a different synthesizer altogether. Now, it would be nice if the Eloquence synthesizer that Jaws uses, could incorporate these newer voices, so we could have better speech output, with the performance of Eloquence. I don't have any idea how this would be done, but you would think in this modern age of technology, it would be possible. One can indeed use 'where the too or CC line contains' as the condition for a rule and be successful - that's what I usually do; and you don't need the complete address for the rule to take effect. (Any part of the text of the address will do, provided that - among addresses for which you have made rules - it is unique to that address.) - Original Message - From: Victor Gouveia To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, February 16, 2007 1:44 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: in order to make message rules must you have the complete address of the list? Windows and Daylight Saving Time This issue is important if you live in the United States and have a Windows PC. Because of recent rule changes, Daylight Saving Time was extended starting in 2007, and unless you make some changes, your system's clock will not be accurate. Unlike other problems that become a big deal when Microsoft does this or that, when this or that product is updated or discontinued, etc, this issue has a very specific time at which it will bite you. At 2:00 AM local time on Sunday March 11, 2007, your system's clock will be one hour slow. This will continue for three weeks, until the old rules call for Daylight Saving Time to take effect, on Sunday April 1, 2007, at 2:00 AM. At that time, everything will be back to normal, and you will have an accurate clock once again. The problem will resurface at 2:00 AM on Sunday October 28, 2007, when the old rule has Daylight Saving Time end, and last for one week, during which time your system clock will be one hour fast. There will be similar periods of inaccuracy in future years. This document describes a way to fix this problem by editing your Windows timezone data to reflect the new changes. Windows Vista has these changes installed already from the factory, so you don't need to worry about this if you're running Vista. In addition, there is an update for supported Windows operating systems to make these changes, but this method can be used if you don't want to bother with that. This method also works on operating systems that are no longer being supported by Microsoft, such as Windows 95/98/98SE. To do this, you first need to download the timezone editor program here. http://www.bluegrasspals.com/tzedit.zip Unzip the file into your windows directory. Now you need to run the tzedit.exe program from the Start, Run dialog. A window will pop up. You will be in a list of the available timezones, with your current timezone already selected. If you live in the United States, you will almost definitely want to edit this timezone, so tab to the Edit button and click it. A new dialog will come up. Tab over to the Daylight Saving Time section, and change the combo boxes for the days. Currently, the Start Day boxes will read First Sunday of April, and you want to change them to Second Sunday of March. Likewise, for the Last Day combo boxes, change them from Last Sunday in October to First Sunday in November. These are standard combo boxes, so arrowing through them will make all of this self-explanatory. Don't change the time edit boxes or anything else. Click OK to save your changes. Now Shift+Tab over to the list of timezones and arrow until you get to another timezone you want to edit. For completeness, I always edit all of the US timezones. These include (GMT-05:00) Eastern (US and Canada), (GMT-06:00) Central (US and Canada), (GMT-07:00) Mountain (US and Canada), (GMT-08:00) Pacific (US and Canada); Tijuana, and (GMT-09:00) Alaska. You don't need to edit (GMT- 10:00) Hawaii, because Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time. If you live in some parts of Mexico that use US Pacific Time, the Daylight Saving Time dates have not changed. To deal with this, you will need to create a new timezone, set the GMT Offset to - 08:00 and use the old Daylight Saving Time dates described above. When you're all done, click the Close button to exit the program. Once you've edited your timezones, you need to go into your system's Control Panel, and select the Date/Time option. On Windows 98SE, the Timezone selection is on the Date/Time tab, while on XP, there

[JAWS-Users] Re: Jaws crashing when saving to A drive
No, a reinstall does not of itself use up one of your activations. Your Internet activation or floppy authorized key remain on your hard drive until manually or provisionally removed by you or if (in the case of ILM) some hardware change is made to the computer. If installing on a new machine, then a new activation is used there. (Repairing JAWS rarely works for such problems.) - Original Message - From: jason smith To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, February 10, 2007 6:30 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws crashing when saving to A drive Hi everyone, I have been having trouble with my laptop at work. I have recently installed Jaws 7.0 on to my laptop, which is running Windows ME. Because it is windows ME, Jaws 7.0 is the highest version I can now go to on it. My problem is, Jaws is running fairly well and I can save to the laptop hard-drive fine. However, I am having trouble when saving to floppy disk on the A drive. What happens, is I press F12 to save the file onto the A drive(I have just saved to the C drive). I hear the floppy whirring like normal. Once it has finished saving, Jaws crashes. This also happens, if someone else uses the touch-pad on the laptop in order to save to the A drive. I have been told the error message, says something about JFW encountering an error and had to shut-down. The message also says something about braille something or other. I have never used a braille display. To my knowledge, I have never installed any braille drivers etc(apart from those which may come standard with the Jaws program). I have tried different floppy disks too, but still the same problem happens. I am hoping to get Jaws 8.0 up and going on the desktop computers at work. However, the laptop is my own personal one and I naturally, would like to solve this issue. I do have my desktop for my usual computing use. Like I said though, would like to work this out. Thought I would ask here, before getting Acer(who are the manufacturer) to have a look at the A drive, incase it is faulty. [JAWS-Users] Re: The Microsoft word ghost
It is where he says. Be sure you're following the precise file path, not a similar one. Also, you are using Windows XP? this matters indeed. (If you are not using Windows XP, the following does not apply.) You might not get there by a run path. So, Windows Explorer: Go to C: then hit d for Documents and Settings; open it with right-arrow; look for your computer user name, and expand the folder with right-arrow: Application Data, expand; down to Microsoft, expand; down to templates, and then tab into the list view. At that point, if you hit the letter n you will highlight normal.dot, or hit n until you do. Then, delete that file. - Original Message - From: Larry Stansifer To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2007 6:03 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: The Microsoft word ghost Sorry my friend, I am using Word-SP and I can't seem to locate the file you are referencing. To solv this problem close Word if it is opened and go to C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates and delete the Normal.dot file. [JAWS-Users] Re: where do you find info on Jaws and other programs
The DAISY books being referred to are those in which the training materials are reproduced. you thus have installed them. - Original Message - From: jason smith To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, February 05, 2007 5:25 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] where do you find info on Jaws and other programs Hi list, I need a reminder. Where do you go, in order to find out what programs Jaws work with? There is a section in the Jaws menu/folder which gives you a list of programs Jaws works with, along with Jaws commands to work the program. I went into the Jaws menu, into help and into the section what's new in Jaws..., but couldn't find the section I need. Secondly, I originally downloaded Jaws 7.0 from the FS website. I therefore didn't receive the training materials. Before upgrading to Jaws 8.0, I wanted to install these training materials, just incase I need to return to Jaws 7.0. I did a repair of Jaws 7.0 using the software CD. When I go into help and then training, I enter on FS reader demo etc. I hear the guy from FS talking and he tells you about the FS reader. Can I assume then, I have installed the training materials successfully? The reason I ask, is the FS guy talks about accessing DAISY books on the software CD. If I have installed them, wouldn't these DAISY books now be on my computer. I am using Windows XP, if that is relevant and Jaws 7.0. Like I said, I will be upgrading to 8.0, but want to keep 7.0 as a back-up. Hopefully, someone can answer my questions, or at least help me understand what needs to be done. This is what I initially sent to David, along with my thanks for the audio tutorial pertaining to message rules for Outlook Express. *** I also appreciate your instructions about burning CDs with Windows Media Player. I was hesitant to experiment, but decided to give it a whirl. I had no problem burning my first two CDs; however, now I am being given the following message when I reach the point of the prompt to start the burning process: Windows Media Player Close Button It is not possible to burn this list of files because all of the files have errors or are missing burn rights. To learn more about the problems, click the icon next to each file in the burn list. OK button If my memory is correct, there were 502 in the list, which seems to be everything I have played with this program. I tried to determine what the error prompt referred to, or how to clear the items in this Burn list, but no luck with either. That's my problem. Perhaps I should use a different program. [JAWS-Users] Re: Vista and Jaws?
It will. Eric tells Jonathan this in the FS podcast. XP and Vista are being jointly supported. your SMA on XP will work with Vista, and vice versa, if you should downgrade for some reason. You don't lose an SMA count if you upgrade to Vista from XP. You do need to have JAWS8 for this upgrade. More info is due at fsactivate.com and probably more is about to be published on this subject. [JAWS-Users] Re: Vista and Jaws?
This means that, although you may get a new Vista-operated computer, if you install JAWS8 on it it won't count against your SMA, although you will lose another allowed authorization - which you can retrieve in the usual manner by contacting Freedom Scientific as hitherto. Also, Eric has said that there will be a JAWS8 update that is both Vista- and XP- comppatible 'in early February'. The JAWS8 update and future JAWS versions, to paraphrase the much-esteemed Eric, the update will be smart enough to know your OS, whether you have Windows XP or Windows Vista. [JAWS-Users] Re: Having Trouble With A Web Site
You're meant to use the numpad numbers; so remember that numlock is off for the benefit of JAWS and other screen readers. You still might want to unload JAWS if you're using a software synthesizer from the same sound card as the 'real audio'. The site is meant to be possible for a blind person to operate without a screen reader. - Original Message - From: Donnie Parrett To: JAWS-Users Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 1:35 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Having Trouble With A Web Site There is a web page called The Audio Network that I am wanting to go too. [JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads
Did you do any of the things we have so far recommended, like scan for and remove any possible spyware? Do you know what we mean by spyware? (Spyware is another form of malware, not necessarily a virus. (It could be 'ad-ware'.) Some spyware programs have been known to cause download problems with other software.) Did you have any successful downloads since your recent installation of Winzip? Did you have any problems installing Winzip? (Was it the most recent version of the program?) You will, now, or in the future if you don't have any at present, you need to install at least Ad-Aware and Spybot Search Destroy, which both are anti-spyware programs that complement easch other in terms of how they work. If you have an anti-spyware program, scan your sysstem with it (if you have not done so before) now. I just have an idea that if you uninstall Winzip, that might tell us whether the problem is related to that or not. (Winzip doesn't handle files in quite the same way as your ordinary .exe. files.) It is very poossible that you will not solve this problem by one simple or straightforward step, so you need to think to do one thing at a time unless you know what to do then. - Original Message - From: Terry Olandese To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 3:04 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads I will try to answer your questions to the best of my abilities and I thank all of you for all of your help. When was your last successful file download in IE; and did you do an installation successfully after that, or did you hold off installing? When you discovered the fault on Wednesday morning, what were you trying to download and from what Web site? Try deleting your History, [delete history button] which is in the dialogue near temporary Internet Files. When asked, are you sure? say yes. Also, again delete the Temporary Internet files so that the deletion of the Internet History will take. (My NOD32 succesfully updated tonight, perhaps two or three times today so far.) As I said on another list: If you have anti-spyware programs, use them and let them delete whatever they find. Delete temporary Internet files; delete temp files, do a disk cleanup. Have you installed another ftp client? (Occasionally, they can break the file-download of Internet Explorer.) Have you got RealPlayer? See if that works. Uploading/downloding of email has nothing to do with this functionality. I've had this problem on a previous computer, and, according to Microsoft, it's because of a third-party application (for which they are not responsible, as they say), and associated spyware. In the old days, Go!zilla did create such problems with Internet Explorer. Go to http://support.microsoft.com/ and in the edit field, type in your search terms. You will then get a list of articles with suggested remedies. - Original Message - From: Terry Olandese To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, January 24, 2007 11:53 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads thanks, but nothing works that I know of. [JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads
The ultimate solution, short of a drive reformat, which some people with this problem have been driven to in the past, is to delette the index.dat file in a locale like: c:\Windows\temp\Temporary Internet Files\content.ie5 (This has to be done carefully!) It is a last resort. If you were to delete the wrong index.dat file... you would have a bit of a mess left over. The good news, however, is that, correct index.dat file deleted, this particular index.dat is re-created the next time you open Internet Explorer (which should have been closed, of course, since .dat files are files normally in use.) [JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads
When did all of this start? Was it in the last couple of days? Ricque has put forward good questions. A System Restore might, or might not, cure the problem. However, if all it is is a firewall recently installed... that's different, indeed, and should be easy to fix. System Restore? Start Menu; Programs; Accessories submenu, System Tools submenu; hit s until System Restore is highlighted. Restore my computer to an earlier time radiobutton checked, 1 of 3, is the commonest option. Alt+n or tab to and press enter on next. You then get a list of previous restore points set out in a calendar. Tab through, and Hit enter on shows the previous day button, the number of times for the number of days you want to go back. then select a Restore Point for that day, which will be a time, with the spacebar or left-mouse button. Then repeat the Next button manoeuvre you did before. Let the computer do its thing for a while, and it will restart. make sure all other programs are closed during the performance. - Original Message - From: Terry Olandese To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 25, 2007 1:07 AM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: help me with downloads I have one more quick question if you don't mind. [JAWS-Users] Re: Real speech
Wrong information. RealSpeak will work with any version of JAWS that has the capacity to support it. Such versions of JAWS include JAWS7 and JAWS7.10. RealSpeak is one of several software synthesizers that use the SAPI (Speech Application Programming Interface) which was developed by Microsoft for speech synthesis and speech-recognition support. In order to use RealSpeak once you have it installed, you will still need to select SAPI5 and then go on to select one of the RealSpeak voices. - Original Message - From: Jyotsna Kaki To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, January 22, 2007 5:55 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Real speech Hey, I believe real voice option only works with JAWS 8.0. Something possibly crashing Eloquence, then? My normal default synth is the Apollo 2 external synthesizer. It reads ok there with JAWS8. - Original Message - From: Walt Smith To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, January 18, 2007 4:20 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: A really nasty website??? [JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help
If you wanted to organize your favorites by topic: Say for example you have a number of favorites that are streams of radio stations, you might want to put them in a 'radio' folder. Or if you have a number of favorite dictionaries, you might want to have them in a dictionaries folder. The criteria for different folders can be anything you fancy. Personally, I tend to put them all together, while renaming some of them to make them more convenient to find and remember. - Original Message - From: Rich Hamel To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, January 15, 2007 1:54 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help Hi guys; This has been very helpful. I am not sure why , or what putting favorites in different folders would do. My impression is that favorites are just web sites that can be accessed quickly. What are some suggestions on putting them in different folders? How would this be helpful? Thank you for the help. Rich - Original Message - From: Steve Shannon [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: jaws-users-list@googlegroups.com Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2007 10:50 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Re: Organize favorites; help A quicker way to get to the favorites folder is: 1. Press windows key R 2. Type in favorites and press enter. 3. This puts you directly in your favorites folder and then you can put them in to folders if you like. Once you do this, Jaws may not speak that the applications menu is open, but don't worry, just arrow up or down and you'll find it is open. Once you find that it is open, just arrow up to sort by, then arrow to name and press enter. This will organize your favourites menu into alphabetical order. If, on the other hand you want to place them in folders, I would suggest you do it via the favourites folder on your hard drive, as opposed to doing it through the menus. I just find it easier and less frustrating. To do this, just go into your my computer, under the c: drive, then into documents and settings, then to your name, or the name of the default user on the computer, usually, that's your name, then pressing enter on the favourites folder. At this point you'll be able to create folders and move your existing favourites into existing folders just by cutting and pasting. Again, this is just my preference, and others may find it easier another way.
