To be clear, you need first to turn the numlock off for the alt combinations to be accepted, and then turned back on for JAWS to work. Note that for many symbols/characters, I need to put them in the JAWS dictionary to have them spoken. How many may vary from synthesizer to synthesizer.

you could add the accented word to the jaws dictionary and as someone mentioned some are readily available with jawskey plus numrow4 and you down arrow through the list that comes up to select the one you wish to use. the only other way to create the special characters is to use the alt key

Vicki, JAWS makes a number of accented letters available in a list that you access by pressing JAWS key+4 on the number row above the letters. You arrow down the list or navigate by first letter, then press enter on the one you want. Not all symbols are in the list, so it has limited use.
