Re: [lace] Searching for lace events
Alice, maybe you can consider to include a visit to Saint Charles Borromeus in Antwerp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Charles_Borromeo_Church,_Antwerp where Mrs. Nora Andries will guide you for a visit through the excellent Museum of laces that theChurch hosts. Mrs Andries has reconstructed and recovered during years Old Flemish laces. There are two books published on this respect: "Caroluskantjes" and "Naar de bron" Kind regards. Devon I visited the MAK now two years ago, and the lace room existed and a lot of exquisite laces were displayed: Brussels, Renaissance Italian laces, Milanese, needle laces I had no problem in taking photos of all exhibited laces... Thank you Alex. A very interesting thought, with which I agree. Re: [lace] How did Arachne start?
I remember when I first discovered Arachne, exploring "lace" through an internet searcher as Yahoo, it was back in 2000. I miss those years of my first steps in lacemaking and the excitement of contacting lacemakers of all over the world in a group that took the bobbin lace from a formal point of view. A group always willing to help and share their knowledge. Right now I come to mind lacemakers like Bev Walker, Miriam Gidron, Jeri Ames, Helen Ulrich, Lorelley Halley, Lorri Ferguson, Adele Shaak, Shirley Trigelles, Alice "in Oregon", Jean Leader, Pat Hallam, Tamara Duvall, Liz Reynolds, and so many others... I think remember that was Liz who launched, and has been keepìng on all these years the server "Majordomo", correct me if I'm wrong Thank you for letting us stay in touch all this time, and Avital for moderating us. It is true that other social media as Instagram, and especially Facebook, has caused us to disperse, especially for the advantage that represents to share visually laces and techniques by pictures and videos , however it is also true that many of us are still here. A very especial thought for all the Arachneans who are no longer here. Kind regards and a Happy Anniversary for all of us! Re: [lace] Category for Tenerife or Ruedas
Long... âThere is some confusion between "soles" , "ruedas" and "Canary's suns", respect to "Teneriffe roses or suns"... Originate in Castilla (Spain) 14th. and XVth cent. is the drawnworkâ called "Soles de Salamanca" (Salamanca's suns), "Soles del Casar" (Casar's suns), "Soles Canarios" (Canary's suns) and "Puntos de Catalunya" (Catalunya Stitches), all them take their name depending of the place that they were made. As it is usual in other laces, there are little differences between them: The way that the drawnwork is reinforced on its edges, the shape of the motifs, the combination of squares and circular bands that compound the design, and the prior preparation of drawing the threads once the fabric or linen is mounted on a framework or loom. A minimum of a 50% of threads have to be drawn out, to be considered "lace". The usual motifs: "suns" and "wheels" are additionally made as a needlework. "Canary's suns" are made as the above mentioned, being different as they are worked as narrow bands and then applied to embroidered linens and combined with other technique very typical of the Canary Islands: The openwork. However, when we speak of "Teneriffe suns or roses", we are talking of a different way of the prior mounting threads. Here there is not a loom or framework, the threads are weaved as a radial warp on a circular basis made of metal, card, or similar material, with little holes in concentric circles and then pinned to a little cylindrical pillow. Then it is made the needle work. It is the "easy" way to imitate the "Salamanca's sun" drawnwork. I understand that it is a needle lace craft. This technique was carried to South America by Spanish people, and there it has evolved and has taken its own characteristics. âI hope this has not become too extensive, and it could be understandableâ âGreetings from Barcelona. [lace] Knipling's Festival in Tonder
Hi all, The year 2014, I was fortunate to attend a workshop on design and technique applied to creation of lace for clothing, carried out by Jana Novak in The Catalonian Lace Ass. -ACP-, in Barcelona. She then, encouraged all of us to design our own pieces and gave us the opportunity to participate in the Fashion Show that she had to organize within the Kniplingâs Festival in Tonder 2016. As a result, I have contributed to the Fashion Show with four pieces: a shawl, two tops, and one vest. A fellow Spanish lacemaker, Encarna Gonzalez, has also sent a vest and a âponchoâ. I have enjoyed a lot designing and making the pieces and I have been lucky enough to assist to the Festival, so I feel very happy. I have put on my web a report of the trip with two slide shows, one on the Fashion Show and another on a fantastic exhibition of Vologda laces and a short video on the Spanish participation that maybe would you like to see. http://www.carolgallego.com/2015/tonder_festival.html Enjoy! Dear all, I think it has been a great idea to produce this application for our mobile devices. In effect I bought it when JeanDavid informed on Arachne and I installed perfectly the version for Iphone, on the Ipad. It looked like in a smaller way but there was and worked fine. It is of great help for us, people who are not experts, only fans in identification and history of laces, to have the information just besides you when it can be needed. I was very pleased when JeanDavid announced the Ipad version, so I offered to test it. I am delighted. The application is designed to provide reference up to 60 individual styles of lace, their historical and geographical context as well as their features. And, one of the most important thing is that pictures are excellent. Thanks for the work! Re: [lace] Spain - Mares Lace Museum in Arenys de Mar
Hi Jeri and all. I am only aware of two books that the Spanish can accede to know more about their lace history: That of 'Spanish lace and lacemaking' by Florence May and 'Catálogo de encajes' by Maria Angeles Gonzalez Mena. Unfortunately, other French and English authors ignore practically Spanish laces, excepting those called 'Puntos de España'. Incidentally, there are references to, and pictures of, lacemakers 3 years old - an age our generation thinks is impossible. They have been dressed up in their finest clothes, but so have the adults! Yes Jeri! there are yet children learning bobbin lace by here...just in the last Diada (26Th. May), we realized that among the 2.200 lace participants demonstrating, they could be observed people of different lace generations. I just mounted a short slide show, showing ladies of 80 years, middle ages, young, even a child of 4 years Here it is a link to the pictures: http://www.puntaires.com/mm/file/lace-generation.mp4 another link, reporting The 26Th. [lace] Intellectual property
First af all, this text from Antje's mail: To Jacquie's question why someone would be so 'altruistic' that they would want to do this: I ask myself the same. It is a false concept of being generous. This is something I have never understood, why they need to be so generous with other people and not with the authors? I have my own reply to this. Because they think we have great earnings selling the books. So, we are the bad ones and the fellow lacemakers are the good ones that have to be helped. No mind if I have been generous putting a low sale price. Once said that, and respect with the question of Anne Marie: What is your opinion on this? Are there any other lace associations that interprets the law like this? The Catalonian Lace Ass. ACP in Barcelona, has its own library, that is at disposal of its members for consulting. The Association does not lend the books and the members may only read the books in the library. With respect with John Mead comment: This is an area where a lot of universities should have gotten into trouble, in making up class packets of photocopies from selected works that the students then purchase and use as a textbook; that's a violation of fair use. Recently an University of Barcelona was penalized because they made up photocopies of copyrighted books, that were used by students as class notes. As author (being generous), I could agree with the idea of sharing the books in private, so into lace Associations or classes, but always within a limited circle, as far as I strongly disagree is that the books are photocopied and sold in lace events, being the profit only for people (the vendors) who has nothing to do with the books, excepting an easy profit. Or if we speak of the internet, only become protagonist as children do ..I have more books than you ! Thanks for reading. Carolina. Re: [lace] Yaspé silk thread and hitches
This is the usually way I wind the Spanish bobbins, so the hitch does not tangle with the rest of the thread. It is true that the size of the bobbin is 14 cm. long and this helps. I made sure that when I wound the bobbins I only put thread on the bottom two thirds of the neck, leaving the top third of the neck bare wood which held the hitch very nicely. Jill in Newport Pagnell, Bucks I have used Yaspe silk from BF and had not problems. But I have to say that one hitch do not works for me. Up to 3 hitches is usual and when it comes from silk that slips I make 4 hitches. More than one hitch is not a problem to slide the thread of the bobbin when it is needed. Re: [lace] Knipling lace design program
Hi Jean, and all, I have my copy of Knipling since 2002 with an update in 2009. I often work with it alternating with Lace RXP, depending the type of lace I am designing. My OS Windows 7. I think that while RXP is very good for designing geometric laces, Knipling is excellent to work with braids (parallel lines), and all designs based on circles and circumferences, for example fans or round pieces. Lace 8 (an update of RXP), I have to admit that has progressed a lot with respect the previous RXP, but only in so far as tools in general, printing and predetermined shapes, but not the heart of the software: its mathematical basis From my own experience, the Knipling software is constructed on a more mathematical basis than RXP It is possible to play with round and oval pieces, working on a more customized grids. These customizations require more knowledge of geometry and maths and it takes more time to be familiar with it, however once mastered the result is excellent. I have no relation with any of both suppliers, I only speaks from my own experience. Kind regards Carolina El 06/02/2013 10:45, Jean Nathan escribió: In December 2005 I bought a Windows version (says it's for Windows 98 or newer, but wouldn't like to say if it would work with anything above Vista) of Knipling (English), and I didn't get on with it. [lace] A short and nice story
Dear Arachnids, I thought you would like to know that the ACP-The Catalonian lace Ass., was asked to design the Royal Crowns that Their Majesties the Three Kings, would wear in the Three Kings Parade 2013 in Barcelona. This was just last night. The crowns were worked with gold and silver metallic threads, and I think that the result has been spectacular. The main difficulty was to get the necessary stiffness. If you like to see them, please visit the ACP's web, and just click on News Lace crowns for the three Kings. It has been hung also a video of the Parade, were it can be seen the Kings wearing the crowns. http://www.puntaires.com/en/ If you are thinking in coming to Spain, maybe you would like to know that the annual open lace day XXVI DIADA DE LA PUNTAIRE, will take place this year (25nth ACP's anniversary), along with other different lace events the 26nth May.,in Barcelona. Re: [lace] Lacemaking in Spain
Hi Laurie and all, I fondly remember your trip to Barcelona and our visit to the Mares Museum in Arenys. Glad that you enjoyed it. You have described very well our encuentros -lace events- in Spain, and not only take place in March and April, but from March to November all week ends, Saturday or Sunday. All over the country. usually from 10.00h to 13.00 or sometimes up to 16.00h. In Argentina there are several lace guilds all over the country and we have an special relationship with the Catalonian House in Rosario, which develops a great lace activity, organizing a demonstration every year. The Catalonian lace Guild -ACP-, was the organizer of the XXV Diada in Arenys this year. If you like to take a look to the page hung by the ACP, there are some pictures and videos of the event. http://www.puntaires.com/en/diada.html http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=9GwpB8MUQN4vq=mediumt=219 And...I can confirm that next year the Diada will take place in Barcelona, perhaps you would like to come and see us. if so, note in your calendar the date: the 26nth May 2013. Re: Spanish Lace Pillow Re: [lace] lace photos - what is it?
As a picture is worth a thousand words, here it is a link to a Spanish lace supplier, who sells all type of pillows, now used in Spain: http://www.boixet.com/index.php?cPath=22language=en The traditional one is the straw long vertical bolster pillow, it is intended to work straight long laces. They can be of different diameters, depending on the wideness of the lace to be worked. Usually we support them against a wall and/or a table. http://www.boixet.com/index.php?cPath=22_52 In Galicia (north of Spain) varies slightly the shape, being more wide and some times half bolster pillow, with two sticks on the top to better support and recline on a table. In the South West of the country lacemakers who work tape laces, they use a shorter bolster pillow, similar to Italian and Slovenian ones with a horizontal wooden support. Nowadays polystyrene is also very often used, overall when a large shawl or runner is in process, as well as round pillows. All weekends in Springtime and Summer you can find lace days all over the country sometimes in little villages, where it is usual to find a Civic centre where aged people make laces as a pastime. Here there is another link to another lace day, this in Alcanar (Valencia) http://tinyurl.com/bt48g8q I'm sure our Spanish lacemakers will join in this discussion. Also, an interesting exhibition in the Mares Lace Museum. 2.300 lacemakers were participants in the Diada and up to 50 vendors. [lace] Miniature laces
Since 3 or 4 years ago I enjoy designing miniature laces. When I made my first steps in this area, I thought it was just a matter of reducing sizes, what wrong I was! In fact the motifs had to be proportional to the reduced space available in the piece. It was a challenge and this is what I like and enjoy. So,I cooperate with a fellow Spanish lacemaker who spends part of her time working miniature laces. She is now constructing a new web and both, her laces and his husband wood works are not yet displayed. I'll put here their page for those who love miniatures, as soon as it will be finished . Re: [lace] Out of print
I would like to share with you my own experience on the subject. When in 2004 I first published the first of 3 books on Hinojosa Lace (Witch Stitch lace) I found myself facing this same problem: self publishing or publisher. I inclined to self publishing, which let me controlling the quantity of books according with demand in every moment as well as prices. Lacemaking is a minority market and I understand that the cost of the book have to be balanced for lacemakers. At the same time I was not depending of third parties. The disadvantage is that I have to take charge of distributing the books and contact directly with buyers. But to contact with buyers on the other hand, gives the opportunity to know the acceptance of the book. So on the following years I self published the second and third book in the same way. I have to say that I am glad of the results, and I would do the same if in a next future I will write a book again. Carolina. Barcelona. Re: [lace] lace photos
Well, I think I can put my two cents in this discussion Here in Spain we talk of encaje popular this is popular lace, what you you call continental guipure. This is really a type of Cluny lace. Camariñas on the North and Almagro on the centre of Spain are the most representative villages of this technique. I understand Torchon lace, as a geometrical lace that in the origin had not guipures (leaves and tallies). Here in Spain, we have mixed the geometrical lace (ground and motifs) with guipures, plaits only on the border and, in many occasions a gimp outlining floral motifs. This is a way of not being so bored, and get richer the original torchon which is quite limited when designing. On the other hand, perhaps a way to look like the blonda, made in Catalunya since 1800. Torchon grounds are made in different ways, depending on the area. In Catalunya, we usually work it as: tt c tt pin c tt, being the result a round hole. In others parts of Spain, it is made: tt wholestitch pin wholestitch tt (I think it is called by Bridget Cook, as torchon double ground). This last, is the way that I understand is worked the piece that Lorellei has shown us. I know the lady that has worked the piece. She is living in the North of Spain, in Galicia, where the torchon ground is made in this way. The lace in Spain, is very difficult to settle, the terminology is different North / Centre, East and South, the way of working is different too, even the name given to the lace tools, for example the most basic: Bobbins, they can be named as: Boixets, palillos, bolillos... Kind regards from a sunny Barcelona Carolina de la Guardia http://www.carolgallego.com Witch Stitch Lace El 18/03/2011 4:22, dmt11h...@aol.com escribió: I suggested to Lorelei that the ground in the pictures was whole stitch pin whole stitch and she replied that that was what she meant by Brussels ground. I am not very good with ground names because I find that stitch descriptions are more accurate. But, I went to Cassell illustrated Dictionary of Lacemaking and they claim that the Brussels ground is a droschel ground. According to the book, Each hexagon consists of two vertical plaits of six or seven half stitches, followed by an extra twist on each pair so that the diagonal pairs linking the plaits have a total of two twists. The term is sometimes erroneously applied to Mechlin ground, a lace with a similar ground although having a shorter plaits. If one were to do wholestitch pin wholestitch or some variation of that, ie. Wholestich pin linen stitch, one might get the same number of crosses and twists, which is kind of an interesting realization that I had not thought of. But I believe that Brussels and Mechlin are actually worked as plaits, and I don't think they have a pin in the middle of the plait. In fact, although I have never done it myself, I was under the impression that it was worked without pins at all. I feel that the picture looks as though there is a distinct pin hole in the middle of the ground stitch, or plait, if you will. Whether this is achieved with a single twist, or a double twist around the pin I don't know, and I don't know what it is called. What are the common names for grounds? I just looked up Dieppe ground, a name I recall, and it is half stitch pin half stitch. Spanish ground is half stitch twist pin half stitch and twist, according to Cassel, resulting in two twists around the pin, which is sort of noticeable, and which I might consider to be a candidate if the picture on picassa was clearer. Also the picture seems to be accompanied by a Spanish language caption, but I don't know if there if there is any real association between Spanish lace and the use of the Spanish stitch. I think that neither of these grounds would be inconsistent with what Lorelei notes as looking like a torchon lace. However, the thought process has gotten me to thinking about ground names. Is there any place where you can find all the ground names grouped together with all the variations in names? And is there any significance to the use of varioius torchon grounds? I realize that Brussels, Mechlin, Valenciennes, etc, are chiefly identified by the grounds, but there are a lot of other grounds. Thanks Lorelei, for opening this line of inquiry. Re: [lace] Lace design program for Windows
I have being following this thread and I would like to add my two cents. I am a PC Windows XP user and I had designed with both Corel Draw and Illustrator, until I discovered the specific lace programs: first Lace Designer 3.1, and the update to Lace Designer Gold later Lace 2000,the last one of Il-Soft RXP, and Knipling from Petra Pönisch. I currently work with RXP or Knipling, depending of the drawing I have to do. I feel comfortable drawing geometrical patterns with RXP, because of the user friendly tool of layers and the possibility of printing according wit predetermined threads, but I do not like the polar grid solution that it brings. Knipling, although I have to admit that it is a more complex program, it is better solved, mathematically speaking, and this is something very important when working with curves and polar grids. Round grids, circles and ovals, the possibility to do equidistant ribbons, distort elements and other very interesting tools give me a lot of possibilities and surpass my expectation. Really, every program it is sure that will find the appropriate user and vice versa. I think to have identified the ground used in the piece. It appears on the book by Gertrude Whiting, A Lace Guide for makers and collectors, page. 87. I have cut out the basic motifs on the picture for a better identification: 2 flowers with different centres, one in cloth stitch and the other half stitch, the petals are holes, surrounded by little braids in cloth stitch. I am quite sure that the piece is worked as a freehand lace based on Trentino Stitch. It would be more difficult to establish a date for it, at least me. Greetings from Barcelona. Q2, If a new range of coloured linen became available would you like it to be: b, about 30 wraps/cm - similar thickness to DMC Special Dentelles 80 (tatting cotton) The bright and shiny colours of rayon/viscose have always attracted me. Re: [lace] honiton knots
I have seen too, working Blonda here in Catalunya to discard the bobbin when needed, taking out it to the back. The lacemakers do not cut off the bobbin at the moment. When the braid wides, the bobbins discarded are rejoined again to the work (usually wholestitch).Only when the piece is finished the threads are cut off. Of course this is a method to save time when the work is made for sale. Honiton lace is made up of shaped sprigs which means that as the braid widens you need to add more pairs and as the braid becomes narrower you need to remove pairs. Even in a small piece dozens of pairs may be removed and added again later. If it is the very first honiton piece, then take the empty bobbin-pair - wind one bobbin of the pair very full, and wind the other from the full bobbin, just a small amount. Carolina. Barcelona. [lace] variegated thread
Generally speaking, I don't like very much coloured laces, however I found that to use variegated colour in working pairs (torchon technique), just in the area of wholestitch and outside head of the lace, is really attractive. The stripping effect has been for me too, an effect to avoid, and I agree with Francis that the solution was to use a thinner thread, as it is Sulky Guttermann, and to wind the working pair with variegated thread, two threads together. I didn't need to twist them. Then,I worked the ground and other stitches with ecru or white thread, Finca bolillos #20. The stripping disappeared and the result was a new mixed colour. Re: [lace] Lace makers census
Hi Miriam and everyone, I can say that they exist at least 5000 lacemakers, only here in my area of Catalunya (Spain). Possibly the number raises up to 10.000 lacemakers, all the country (Spain) (I have not evidence of this, this is only a supposition) So, it is not a nonsense to speak of tens of thousands all over the world! There are about 500 in Canada, by my guesstimate, but let's say a thousand counting anyone who could possibly have tried bobbin lace. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] Etruscan jewelry
Hello all, Yesterday, I was amazed when visiting an exhibition on Etruscan people, now displayed in Barcelona; I could appreciate the exquisite jewelry they worked. I tried to take two pictures for sharing with you, whereas the result was not good, so I have drawn the simple geometrical design of the piece. It is a free hand draw, so excuse me if it is not very good, I hope it will be enough understandable though. The piece that impressed me in a so special manner was a wire, open work bracelet with a geometrical design, which it would be liable to be lace made. The filigree * of the bracelet was that of twisted threads soldered between two strips, forming an open work similar to a hemstitch. Maybe any of our colleagues spiders would like to give it a try! I have put the bracelet draw on: http://www.geocities.com/carolgallego/etrusco.html Bye for now. Carolina *Filigree according with what Prof. Sheat says, derived from the Spanish: Filore = to spin; and Grano = Grain of the worked material. -- Carolina de la Guardia http://www.geocities.com/carolgallego Witch Stitch Lace Special Fan Patterns now available - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] visit to l'Arboç (long)
Hello all, Last Sunday, we had the lace Day Event in l'Arboç, near Barcelona. I was pleasantly surprised by the visit of Antje, my Spanish fellow on Arachne list, so we went to the Lace Day Fair with our DH and other lacemakers that joined us. So, here it is our lace report. As you know, lace day events in Spain are held open air. This time, the weather was not as good as on other occasions and the strong wind spoiled the lace Day. The ground of the place, being of sandy soil, flew all over the place and the laces, and the lacemakers that were working, were really upset . As time passed, the wind got stronger and definitely the lacemakers had to retire and go home. This lace event is really interesting because the lace made there, is a bit different from the lace of other places. They have a proper style. In a general way I would say that the characteristics are: very fine thread, many bobbins (by hundreds), torchon ground made TTC PIN TTC, rose ground, and /or tulle ground with floral motifs in cloth stitch adding and taking off pairs all the time. So, while they are working the lace, lots of cut threads can be seen on the lace, which make it look very chaotic and hard to work. But the result is a very fine lace. Some of lacers at the event have been making lace all their life. I took a picture of one who must be almost 100 years old. In l'Arboç, there is also a lace museum. We had the opportunity to visit the announced jewelery exhibition. Even though the pictures are not good because it was so crowded, we took images of some of the lace jewels displayed at the show room to share with you. In the lot I have also included some images of the most interesting laces that the local lacemakers were working at the demo, as well as some pictures of the Museum lace collection. We hope that you enjoy the pictures at: http://picasaweb.google.es/carolina.g.gallego/LaceDayLArbo2007?authkey=3uKyUrlu3R8 We want you to know that here in Spain lace has been made since very old times and in many different places, being Cataluña one of the most important ones. Re: [lace] Is Lace quiet?
Hello all, As the list is quiet I take the occasion to tell you that next 9th. Dec., will take place the annual Lace Day Event in l'Arboç (Barcelona-Spain). It is one of the 3 most important lace events in Catalunya. This week I assisted to the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the Catalonian Lace Guild. It was an emotive action where the foundational members were invited and honored with a commemorative pin. We all had too, the opportunity to know that in the Lace Museum of l'Arboç, the days 7th, to 9th. Dec. there will be an interesting exhibition of jewels made with lace. I was told that firstly, it is made a Roseground or Point de Paris stitch lace sheet by the lacemaker and then the jeweler cuts little bands or strips and frame them with a gold profile. I have seen nice pendants, bracelets and rings in gold and white gold very very nice. Of course I'll go, and if it is allowed I shall take some pictures to share with you. Regards. Carolina.
