Apologies for resending this message, but I misspelled Pam's surname. Hi fellow Arachneans, A friend wants to make this bookmark published in "Vuelta y Cruz/Twist and Cross" No. 2 (pages 8-10). Has anyone made this bookmark? Can anyone tell me where the path of the gimp goes around the motif? I seem to remember seeing this pattern published in another place, but can't remember where. [lace] RIP: Eeva Talts (1944 - 2016)
Sad news: Estonian lacemaker Eeva Talts has died at the age of 72. As well as teaching bobbin lace she organized the annual Lace Festival in Pärnu & was a founder of the Estonian Bobbin Lace Association (Eesti Niplispitsi Selts) in 1995. She published "Eesti niplispitsi mustreid/Estonian bobbin lace patterns" in 2003. In 2012 Eeva wrote a book about tatting in the Estonian language, and in 2015 published a book about bobbin lace from the Seto region, which is on the Estonian & Russian border. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Dear Fellow Aracheans, When the question was asked about when the next issue of the I.O.L.I. Bulletin was due to arrive in mailboxes, I was in Paris for the week. I had proofread the magazine earlier in September, for the Editor, who unfortunately is not a subscriber to Arachne. On Monday I received two magazines - the Nov./Dec. issue of Piecework the Fall 2013 issue of I.O.L.I. Bulletin. Now I'm waiting for the UK Lace one to arrive. I realized that the October 2012 issue (#148) had an article about a Halloween quilt made with 12 lace motifs applied to the pumpkins. Included were the patterns for an owl, a witch a vulture. I was looking forward to seeing the other patterns published, so I'm wondering if there will be some more patterns in the next issue? But do we have to wait for another 2 years for all the others? Hi fellow Arachneans, I just received an e-mail from a fellow lacemaker from somewhere in the USA (I won't say which state) asking if I had a particular lace book as she was looking for a particular pattern. I suggested that she ask the IOLI Librarian she could borrow the book if she was an IOLI member. The IOLI Library is huge it so worth being a member just so that you can borrow any of the books, DVDs or videos. In fact at the recent AGM the restriction that items will only be sent to members in the USA Canada has been lifted, may now be borrowed by members of good standing. Dear fellow Arachneans, Tartu was celebrating Hansa Days this weekend our little group of lacemakers had fun demonstrating getting lots of attention from everyone who braved the rain showers. I wanted to share information about a book that a fellow lacemaker found while we were in Dresden a few weeks ago. I didn't dare go into any book store, but did visit the Porcelain Museum. I searched the archives found no reference to this book. The book is Russian Elegance: Country City Fashion from the 15th to the Early 20th Century written by Luisa V. Yefimova Tatyana S. Aleshina. Published by Vivays Publishing Ltd in 2011, English, 192 pages, 270 x 210 (mm) ISBN: 9781908126078 There is a review of the book here: http://www.needlenthread.com/2013/02/russian-elegance-book-review.html I think this is worth adding to any costume history library. [lace] David Hopkin's lecture
Dear fellow Arachneans, Yesterday evening I attended a lecture hosted by the University of Tartu's Department of Scandinavian Studies. David Hopkin, an Oxford professor, is a very interesting person an articulate speaker. His lecture was based on the 6th chapter of his book titled Voices of the People in Nineteenth-Century France. http://www.academia.edu/1529492/Voices_of_the_People_in_Nineteenth-Century_France This chapter tells about the 18th Century songs that had been collected recorded, from the lacemakers of Vellave (Le Puy-en-Valey) while they made lace in their homes. At the end he told us of the popularity of the song about St. Alexis which many of us hadn't heard about: http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=388 He states that when St. Alexis obeyed his parents by marrying the bride chosen for him, he also broke the sacrament of marriage by running away before sleeping with his wife. His hypothesis is that lacemakers considered it acceptable in the eyes of the church the patriarchal society to remain single work for the benefit of the poor by teaching making lace. He thought that the songs were not sung to help the workers concentrate while working. Personally, I think that maybe the songs were sung to help keep their minds active while doing the monotonous repetition of the piecework or yardage. Nowadays we use radios play musical CDs, or even listen to audio books, to make our time more productive while relieving the quiet and boredom. I'm hoping to borrow the book soon read his book completely. [lace] Pre-modern Seminar: The Visionary World of the Lacemaker
I was informed about a lecture this evening which I'm planning to attend. Today, on Monday April 15^th , David Hopkin from the University of Oxford will give a talk called: *The Visionary World of the Lacemaker*** David sent a short presentation of the lecture: Handmade lace is a strange textile which comes laden with meanings beyond the sartorial. According to numerous legends its origin was divine, and lacemaking skills were often taught in pious institutions. It was a luxury product, sponsored by aristocrats, although made by the poorest in society. Both the product and its production were associated with the enforcement of female submission and modesty, but at the same time it carried an erotic charge. As lace was the last textile whose manufacture was mechanised we have an especially privileged access into the working world of lacemakers. In the nineteenth century they were the subject of considerable attention from the Church, from aristocratic patrons and from the state keen to encourage home-working. But they were also visited again and again by folklorists because lacemakers' collective work patterns encouraged storytelling and singing. Many of the most important folksong and folktale collections from Flanders and France were made among lacemakers. What do these texts tell us about lacemakers' lives and their relationship with their craft? Lacemakers rejected many aspects of what the state, church, lace-entrepreneurs and family patriarchs had in mind for them. What emerges instead is their relationship to the supernatural and the visionary quality of lacemakers' imagination. I'm not sure that I agree with the last few sentences. But I will share my impressions. One of the Estonian commercial TV stations has been showing this series, which is based on the books written by Kerry Greenwood. Tatting is mentioned in 2 of the books surprisingly bobbin lace in only one. But I have a question about how old books have to be before it is permissible to include them in the Arizona archive? I have in my hot little hands a small Swedish paperback book titled Handledning i Knyppling which was published in Stockholm in 1962, which makes it 50 years old this year. I plan to scan it anyway, while I have it, before I return it to the lady who let me borrow it. I'm very happy that my copy of Lace #147 has arrived today. I was pleased to see that the tatted lace on the back cover was made by Europa Chang with whom I shared a hotel room in Caen at the OIDFA Congress. I was sorry that while at Caen that I didn't get to meet Ilske Diane Z and several other UK Arachneans. But I did finally meet one of my second cousins at the Mayor's reception. It was hard to read name tags I know that my name tag kept turning around so that it was always back to front. Maybe if flags were printed on the name-tag attendees wouldn't have to ask where people were from. I think that trying to read small print from a few feet away is hard for many of us who are short sighted. [lace] New German lace books (was 'pin under 4 edge')
Hi Kim, This week I received the OIDFA Bulletin and in the back are reviews for 3 new books. They are all in German, but hopefully some of them may be translated into English. ISBN: 3-934210-81-3 published by Deutscher Klöppelverband e.V. Price: €58.00 Some quotes from the review are: The first 16 pages discuss what is meant by edges, how they evolved and how they are used in various types of lace. The information is grouped into 11 categories according to the type of edge. Inside the back cover, in a plastic sleeve, is a DVD containing PDF files with the working diagram pricking for each of the 136 reconstructions. I hope that this book contains what you are looking for, Kim. The 2nd review was for the book titled Mailander Spitze auf neuen Wegen which translates to Milanese Lace on New Paths written by German Lace Assoc. ISBN: 3-934210-85-1 published by Deutscher Klöppelverband e.V. Price: €40.00 And the first review was for the catalogue from the 2011 Congress in Bad Pyrmont. The contest was titled Wolken, Wind und Wetter (Clouds, Wind and Weather). ISBN: 3-934210-84-4 published by Deutscher Klöppelverband e.V. [lace] News from Tartu
G'day to all fellow Arachneans, Last week I came across some of my old Arachne T-shirts, a few of which I'll take to France in one month's time. :-) On Saturday I was elected as a new board member of the Eesti Niplispitsi Selts (Estonian Bobbin Lace Society) so I hope that I can contribute in a meaningful way for a year. I thought I'd also mention that there is a lace workshop being held in Tartu for 2 weeks in August (6th-18th) with a Czech teacher teaching in English - contemporary lace materials. I don't know all the details yet, but if anyone is interested please contact me personally. And now I have some sewing to get done. Thanks for help received from fellow Arachneans. I decided to use the diagrams on pages 35-36 of Bridget Cook's Practical Skills in BL describing 'a wide scroll start'. Re: [lace] Starting a Scroll
Sorry for not provide more detail. I wanted to make another Easter Egg from Annelies Kirst's 2nd book. It's one of the patterns with a butterfly labeled Duchesse-Ei on page 18. I've enlarged it a bit I want to work it in coloured thread. She provides a diagram for the pivot turn on the bottom wings, the order of how to work the wings. But I just don't like the holes at the beginning of the scrolls. I haven't worked a scroll before, so I'm looking for a better way to work them. I have Edna Sutton's Bruges Flower Lace which shows how to start end a simple scroll. [lace] New Estonian BL Book
G'day Arachneans, Just letting you know that I attended a book launch yesterday at the Estonian National Museum. Lia Looga has just published her 2nd book - Bobbin Lace Jewellery and Accessories I is the English title but is in Estonian German. Looks like there might be a Part II later. It is very similar to her first book, but there are also 4 scarf patterns included in this book. This time all the patterns are in the book not on separate sheets, which tend to get stolen in bookstores. I paid 20 Euros for my copy, but it could cost a little more from book suppliers. I've posted a photo of the cover in my Webshots album - at the end. [lace-chat] Soup Stew enhancer
Dear fellow Arachneans, Until recently I would usually throw out the vinegar mix leftover from the jar of pickled cucumbers. I prefer the picnic or bread better variety. Lately once the pickles are eaten, I've sliced up a fresh cucumber reused the mixture by adding a little fresh vinegar. On Sunday evening I was making soup with some basic vegetables a chunk of ham, decided to throw in the dregs of the pickled cucumbers. I added some pasta to fill up my guys, my soup with mustard seeds was quite deliciously different. My guys like green olives on pizza! So I had also discovered a while ago that I could add the vinegar from the can of green olives to tenderize the tougher cuts of meat. I thought I'd share these ideas with my fellow chefs/cooks. Dear Friends, On Thursday, 10th Nov., I travelled up to Tallinn for the day to visit the event known as Mardilaat which is an annual Handwork Crafts Fair. It had been three years since I had visited this event, so I was wondering if there was anything new this year. I was able to greet other lacemakers whom I knew from Pärnu, Narva, Tallinn as well as a few from Tartu. The highlight for me was meeting 2 ladies from The Netherlands who have recently published their first knitting book titled Warme Handen/Warm Hands based on Estonian knitting patterns techniques. I was informed that the English translation was done by a young Australian man who is also a knitter is one of the models. [lace] Lace in literature
I recently read The White Queen, The Virgin's Lover, The Red Queen by Philippa Godfrey in that order. Sadly, these are all the books, written by this author, that the Tartu public library has on its shelves. I really enjoyed them, but was a little disappointed that her research wasn't thorough enough. In The Red Queen she refers to Margaret wearing a nightgown which has the finest Valenciennes lace. Am I correct in thinking that this type of lace didn't exist in the middle of the 15th century (1453 AD)? According to my computer research, it came into existence in the middle of the 18th century. I have but two years for to stay and then I thinke to marry; But if a briske younge man com in, and that is no decever, to corte him then I will begin Like a bone-lace weaver. If that he be a gentellman and vowes he'll love me kindly then for him I'le doe what I can and strive to please him finely. Of if he be a yoman good, and to me no decever, then I will strive to pleas his mood, Like a bone-lace weaver. We get our living with our handes, having our wits about us. We hope to purches hous lands, tho young men the[y] doe flout us. But let them all say what y can Wee'l trust no decever, Wee'l sing you songs of peg and nan, Like a bone-lace weaver. We keepe out hands both whit and neat, our pritty lace to handle, We sing our sonits all compleat, By daylight or a candell, And when out Task we ended have, Our Mistris shews such fancy, We sport ans sing, that all doth ring, O Brave Bone-lace weaver. And thus we leade most merry lives, We heed no young mens saying We scorne for to be married wives, Wee'l keepe our fingers playing. Wee'l weare brave laces on our heads, We scorne as yeat a beaver, Wee'l worke a pace, Brave flanders lace o brave Bone-lace weaver. (I have left all spelling as printed by Palmer, except that all the letter /v/s in the abover were printed as /u/. I think this orthographic change makes it slightly easier to read while not obliterating the original). Palmer writes: /The song was written in about 1650 by Leonard Wheatcroft, of Ashover in Derbyshire. Apart from writing songs he was village publican, tailor, parish clerk and a combatant in the Civil War - on both sides. No tune was indicated, but there is a modern recording with a tune by Roy Harris (Muckram Wakes, A Map of Derbyshire, Leader LER 2085)./ Palmer's source is given as: /MS in the Ashover Parish Records, D253A/PZ11, Derbyshire Records Office/ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] White dresses for debutantes
One period of time that has always intrigued me is the so-called Regency period. Or during the Victorian era when young girls were presented at court to the reigning monarch. The young girls of upper society would traditionally wear long white ballgown dresses with trains tiaras, etc. If I had lived in that period I'd been presented at court, I think my white dress might have been worn again as a wedding gown. Isn't this a possibility of the origin of white wedding dresses? Unfortunately the year I was born Queen Elizabeth discontinued the practice of being presented at court. I tried to find out when debutantes were first presented at court found this article: http://www.hrp.org.uk/KensingtonPalace/stories/exhibitions/introductiontothedebutantes.aspx which mentions that it was a 200 year old tradition. Does anybody know who when it started? I've received a few e-mails from people who'd like to be included in the postcard exchange. If you wish to participate I will of course need your address!!. Re: [lace] Postcard Exchange
For those new to the list, last year I organized an exchange of postcards among fellow lacemakers to make the summer months a little more interesting for those unable to travel (like me) those who were travelling to conventions other places. Last year there were 48 participants, so I created 4 groups of 12 participants sorted by location. Each person then was given 3 addresses to send a postcard to one person in the other 3 groups. So to make it more interesting everyone received 3 postcards from another 3 different people. Those who appreciated receiving their postcards, then reciprocated with another postcard. I just asked that everyone to send their postcards out before the end of August. I'll accept names until 15th June then send out addresses on the 20th June. Yesterday I bought the Spring/Summer 2011 issue of Designer Knitting. On page 4 is written The two key words for this season are WHITE in its various shades and LACE, from superfine to chunky. But what caught my attention was the page of Yarn Bowls on page 11. The odd one out is the 10th bowl which is tallish made from maple wood with a hole in the side connected to the rim with a split. Like this one with a lid: http://www.etsy.com/listing/72939547/sycamore-lidded-yarn-bowl-canister Now I have another use for my pottery salt caddy which has a hole in the top. [lace] A Filling that doesn't use lots of bobbins
My lace friend/student is making the pattern on the cover of the Fall 1997-1998 I.O.L.I. Bulletin. It is the I Love You in American Sign Language pattern created by Gail Johnson, MN. The main reason Elizabeth is making this pattern is because she is deaf. But there is a decision to make - does she work the middle part (the palm) or not? To work the apple blossom filling she would need about 40 pairs, which she doesn't have. Is there a filling that she could work that needs less than 20 pairs? I have thought that she could do a Russian lace type filling which meanders around. Any ideas or suggestions? [lace] Surprising book discovery
Happy New Year to everybody on the list. Today is our 30th wedding anniversary I'm looking forward to going out for dinner soon. But I had to return a big new book to the Tartu Public library today pick up 3 books I had requested yesterday. The biggest book was Master Works - Decorative and Functional Art (published in 2000, Australia) which had 'lace' included in the description. I looked through the table of contents to find what kind of lace was included. To my surprise under Bobbins and Needles is the name of my cousin, Jenny Rees. So I turn to page 116 to read the first sentence In 1982 Jenny Rees had a few lessons in bobbin lacemaking from a cousin who was learning herself. I quickly shared this discovery with my husband - as I am that cousin! There is a Sturt's Desert Pea edging for a handkerchief that is not in Jenny's book a Carrickmacross Gum Leaf mat with instructions for both. There is also a photo of a lovely Bedfordshire lace collar with what looks like a banksia surrounded by flannel flowers gum leaves. I realize that this was published before the bushfire that destroyed Jenny's home. There are also a few other names that I recognize - Marie Laurie (needlepoint lace), Margaret Rolfe (quilting) Annemieke Mein (sculptured forms). I'm going to fun having a good browse through this beautiful book. I'm feeling on top of the world today! [lace] Finishing lace with a fringe
That is a lovely little robin, Pam. I've seen a robin twice while I've lived here in Tartu. I think the overlap of the cake wire would look better in the middle at the bottom, rather than in one corner. Can you add to the instructions to spray or wet the fringe ends comb straight? I quite often see photos of lovely ornaments or bookmarks where the ends are all over the place. Whenever I have a piece of lace that I'm ending in a fringe, I lay it on a clean tea-towel after spritzing the ends with water, I then use a wide tooth comb to straighten the ends. Then the ends can be trimmed so that they are all the same length. Well, it snowed here on Thursday now there are just little piles everywhere. Re: [lace] Finishing lace with a fringe
I hope everyone enjoys your workshop, Eve. Simple but effective designs. There is a simpler idea of having just 2 pieces of wire at the top bottom. The ends can be curled up or under but need to be cut longer than the width. Or the ends can have beads glued onto them. A braided hanger can be added if a wire loop is not wanted. Yesterday I helped a friend finish making a little lace heart . Before pulling out the edge pins I dabbed it with Jana Novak's stiffener then dried it with a hair dryer. Pene On 11/20/2010 11:17 AM, Eve Morton wrote: Thank you for the praise Pene. I did make the first few patterns with the overlap at the bottom but unless I used a thicker wire it didn't hold the shape at the base. As a tree decoration the join will not be so obvious as one sees the ornaments further away than close up as the photo is. It is a good tip about damping and combing the fringe. It works very well on cotton threads but metallic threads seem to be more unruly. However I will try it on the next one that I do. The robin is one of a series of charted bobbin lace patterns that I have designed for this year's Christmas workshop for Poole Bobbin Lace Circle. Thanks for the complement, Brenda. I didn't use a needle at all. After I had made the lace trails - 2 trails on the top one trail around the bottom - I used the gold passives to include the sequin waste the sequins. It wasn't easy to join both sides together. Re: [lace] UK Lace #140
My cousin informed me that Pat Milne was the designer of the lace edgings made for the jabot cuffs for the Australian Parliament. I just don't understand why the author of the article couldn't have given Pat the credit mentioned her name. I was also informed that: The Canberra Lacemakers are small group that just meet for their own interest in lacemaking and they aren't into websites etc. I doubt there will be anything in Australian Lace as they aren't affiliated with the ALG. Even if the group is independent of the Australian Lace Guild, personally I think that they could share the end results of any major projects with other lacemakers in Australia, thus providing inspiration for other groups. I was wondering if it is possible for lacemakers to see the lace jabots cuffs when visiting Parliament House? It would be great if they were on display when not being worn. I've been searching for references to the lace jabot for the Parliament House if I find anything I'll send the url to the list. [lace] UK Lace #140
Yesterday I received my copy of Lace #140 I enjoyed looking at photos of this year's competition entries. Congratulations to all the winners who came up with some innovative ideas. I was surprised to also read the article about the Canberra Lacemaker's Association celebrating 30 years of existence on page 12. I was a participant of that group for a few years when DH I lived there in the early 1980's. Sadly I found the article a little disappointing in that not a single member's name is mentioned. My cousin Jenny Rees, whose wattle flower design was used to design 2 sets of jabot cuffs for use at the Australian Parliament , is only refered to as a local lacemaker no photos of the jabot cuffs are included. I googled the group's name couldn't find a website at all. I'm hoping that there will be a more informative article with photos in a future issue of 'Australian Lace'. I might even have to search through old issues. I was a newsletter editor for the New England Lace Group for 6 years, I always made sure that names were included spelt correctly in any article that I published. But whenever I receive the Australian Lace there are articles written where the lacemakers are only referred to by their first names. I feel that I have to ask Why do they do this? I can understand the need for privacy, but these lace magazines should be regarded as historical documents therefore include as much information as possible. What do other lacemakers think? I'll step down from my soapbox now. Pene in Tartu, Estonia - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
