Hi,
we're running three Linux guests under VM.
Each Linux guest definitions is like this :
*
* *USER LINUX suse version 8 *
*
USER SUSE80G5 SUSE80G5
i.e, every linux have a total memory of 1024 Mb and a swap area of 128
Mb.
Each Linux guest is running a Domino Server 6.5.2 with 400 mail users
( at
the end there will be five linux guests with 5000 mail users ).
Now, we're having problems with VM paging. Here is a sample of our
RTMGEN.

I can not add much to what Pieter already explained.
When you expect these virtual machines to be active at the same time,
you should have at least 3-4 GB in z/VM. If you don't have that, then
you need to make the virtual machines smaller (and give more VDISK in
return). If z/VM has that much
I would decrease the memroy for the linux (from 1024 to 512 mb) and use
a vdisk as swap-space (512 mb). Then use xstorage for zvm-paging. Do
monitoring (performance and memory utilization with vmstat/sar). If
possible decrease the memory-size swap-space for the linux-guest. Use
fcon/esa for
Your linux will page into the fast zvm vdisk. This should be no
problem
and is much better then using dasd as swap storage.
If you can spare the real to back those vdisks. If you are real
constrained already it won't help you much. You may be better of by
swapping to real disks in that case.

I allocated a new minidisk for a Linux image (SuSE SLES 8), and linked it into

appears to have the same problem. I go to /proc/dasd, and issue the command

Hi Istvan,
I don't know whether your system will need a new kernel and know nothing of
patching and make-ing one. My SLES8 kernel is 2.4.21-251. And I don't know the

- No zone keeping
- No problems with cables. The shark is working if I connect it directly to

- The FCP, disk and tape are working using the switch

Are you sure McData has enabled FICON on the ports?

get it from Sine Nomine, realvnc, Linuxvm.org and Tightvnc. None of their

FICON enablement on all the switches I have worked with (McData, Brocade,

Are you interested in IFL only? We have nearly 600 Linux servers running

Just curious, why no IFL? Do you have any z/os work on those processors?
