There is a bug in the article (Springer svjour3/global) layout: it
uses the default option, which produces an error message. Changing (in
the layout file) "global" to "smallcondensed" (the default option),
fixes this.

I solved the problem.
I used to use bibtexall, a script to run bibtex, which I did not copy
over to my new machine.
I simply changed it back to the default.

If you want to make these comments visible in the pdf, just write something
like
\renewenvironment{comment}{\begingroup\small}{\endgroup}
to the preamble (untested).

It is integrated (at least in 1.4.3). If you have latex2rtf
