Because Mac OSX grabs the caps lock key and doesn't pass it through to VMWare windows in a normal way, its necessary to remap another key to the caps lock so it can be used as a jaws or NVDA laptop modifier key. On both my USB full keyboard and the bluetooth keyboard, I have them setup so that

I highly recommend NVDA over Jaws. It is free, and does just as good a job, if not better. The speech takes getting used to, but if you hate it you can grab a SAPI5 speech synthesizer for $20 to $40. Go to www.nvda-project.org and download the installer. Once you run it, it will open up the

Maybe you're referring to something else but the Mac does a hardware self-check each time it boots up. So if you do a shutdown (not sleep) and then bring it back up, when you hear the startup sound that means the hardware check passed. More info here:
