We live in a suburban/semi-rural area, where small farms are being converted
to new developments all the time. We have a street light on the perimeter
of our property that is paid for by the county electrical utility (publicly
owned). Initially, when the bulb died we were grateful that the light

Well that's what I am thinking but since it seems like everyone has one I

Motion sensor would be the ideal solution, so it's probably against power
co. policy to install one.

Why? It's not like the utility

When you put your own light up, pay more up front for the lamp, and get LED.
Cheaper to operate and should last longer.

This is actually a good deal for the electric co -- they can keep their
baseload plants spinning at times of low demand and not have to build as
much intermediate and peaking capacity. In aggregate it probably adds
up. I think too, it goes back to the original rural electrification

Ours is $7/month. My wife likes to be able to see the skunks as soon or

I think the advantage on those lights is a reduced rate.
If you run your own light all night, every night, the power will cost
you more than if you use theirs.
If you don't keep your outside lights on much, you may not save much,
but it likely won't cost you more.

Forget the power company. you did the right thing by telling them to stuff it.
If you want a light, put it on a building, or worst case, put in a

I guess I was getting screwed by PSO. Yea I get having a switch before the
motion light but I'm talking about a switch I can turn on to have the lights
stay on bypassing the motion sensors.

The motion sensor light thats on my garage has that feature. Turn the switch
Off-On and the light stays on 'till the switch is turned Off. If you do Off-On
Off-On the light stays on for an hour then goes off and back ti motion sensing
mode.

Yes, your switch wires just go from a hot to the light after the motion switch.

Actually, they don't have to. All you need to do is to rig up a small

If it's not too high, that's not a problem - it most likely is wired for
that already. If you want it higher or further away, just add wires to move
the switch out of the light housing down to where you can reach it.

same. But you won't be able to turn it off. I installed my own photo-eye
