It don't hurt nothing. I used a lot of it in my '83 240D back in the day when I had no good place to plug in a block heater and we had a super cold winter. That car leaked it real bad though. Leaked 5w40 a bit less while still starting okay so I switched to that. It did make a little more noise cold but it went away warm.I never did try it in a 601. Re: [MBZ] M119 oil
Peter, isn't your VW a 2003? AFAIK M1 5w40 doesn't carry any VW spec. Supposedly this is because they've never applied for it and it will work fine in the older cars. I'm not sure that applies to the PD engines in the 2003 and newer cars. I'm reasonably sure it does NOT apply to the newest and just before it generations. Those cars apparently require an Xw30 oil or "bad things" happen to the DPF (diesel particulate filter.) Greetings from 30,000 feet BTW. This is becoming quite an issue with older engines. All new designs appear to use roller tappets, and the racing/mud bog guys, using old Detroit iron with flat tappets running directly on the camshaft are reporting serious wear problems. Since most newer engines don't need the phenyl phosphate additives, they are NOT in most engine oils anymore, they cause issues with catalytic converters. For three dollars an oil change I'd stick with the Truck and Turbo -- it is also acceptable for VW tdi engines, which also use flat tappets. I took this hint and found the fuse was good and the other things on the same circuit (#1), the right-side tail and parking lights, worked just fine. So I ran the emergency flashers until they quit and then disassembled the console and pulled the cover off the flasher module. It has a couple of transistors, a diode, a few resistors, and a relay. The relay coil was hot enough to burn myself on. One time, I saw a small wisp of smoke, but not enough to locate the source. After turning it off and waiting a while, when I turned it back on the relay operated normally. I never saw any more smoke. When the relay would stop operating, I could press on the armature to close the Normally Open contacts and the appropriate lights would come on, so it's not a problem of dirty switch contacts or wiring problems. I suspect that the resistance of the coil goes up enough when it's hot that there isn't enough current flowing to pull the armature in. The flasher module has Mercedes part number 000 821 09 63. I have found it at: - autohausAZ - Pelican Parts - Amazon - RMeuropean I have the choice of manufacturers: - Kaehler (KAE) [autohausAZ and RMeuropean] - Wehrle [Pelican Parts, which says Wehrle is better than KAE] Anyone have any opinions on manufacturer or vendor? Re: [MBZ] OT - Gullah baskets
Locally the sweet-grass baskets are famous and pricey. I think the small sizes start at $50 and go up. A few years ago on some Caribbean island, same baskets started at $10, and that was the seller's opening price for bidding. I never wanted nor needed one, so I passed, next time I'll get them for gifts I suppose. Could probably make a killing importing them from the islands and reselling locally, set up a little roadside stand, be the only white folks out there selling them, charge half the price the local sellers charge. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On May 31, 2015 11:26:16 AM EDT, WILTON via Mercedes wrote: >Interesting "piece" about Gullah (near Chuckietown, SC) baskets on >CBS's "Sunday Morning." > >Wilton >___ >http://www.okiebenz.com > >To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > >To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Solar Power Battle Puts Hawaii at Forefront of Worldwide Changes
It was about two years ago that the Feds announced they would be “adjusting” the flood insurance program premiums to better reflect a particular property’s risk. Needless to say that freaked a lot of people out. It happened, but they tempered it a little so owners didn’t get slammed in one big hit. I think they agreed to phase the increased premiums over a period of time, I’m not sure what. All I know is that a lot of properties around here that are in flood zones that were on the market at the time came off the market in a big hurry. Potential buyers wouldn’t even look at them, as the ramp-up for premiums only applied to existing owners. That meant new owners would get hammered with 100% of the “new” premiums. There were all sorts of “the world is falling” pieces in the local media about the effects on home values. Doesn’t seem to have had much of an effect from what I can see. As far as I’m concerned that’s the way it should be. They should ban construction in flood zones and make those who have property in them pay their fair share of the risk. And I say this as someone who is on the edge of a flood zone and still carries Federal flood insurance. The “AE and “X” zones bisect my property, but when the property was built an exemption (“LOMA”) was filed with FEMA due to the ground level being raised from 20 some feet to nearly 38 feet. That effectively took me out of the flood zone, but if you look at the FEMA maps the zones still cross my property. FEMA has this weird arrangement where they don’t update maps when changes are made - they issue exemptions called LOMAs, or “Letter of Map Amendment”, to the property which the County keeps on file. So if you go and look up my address you’ll see that it’s in a flood zone. If you contact the County about anything regarding my property, such as title insurance, underwriting, etc., they’ll offer up the exemption to show the ground level has been changed. Goofy. Back then my FL homeowners and flood insurance was not bad (less than$2K); the bayou lot with 19 ft elevation was worth a lot more than the 50-year-old house. But FL is still a bargain, IMO. I have a brother who still lives in Northern suburban NJ and his taxes and insurance would water your eyes. > -Original Message- > From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Dan > Penoff via Mercedes > Sent: Sunday, May 31, 2015 3:50 PM > To: Mercedes Discussion List > Cc: Dan Penoff > Subject: Re: [MBZ] Solar Power Battle Puts Hawaii at Forefront of Worldwide > Changes > > That's more our wonderful Federal flood program. I don't know if this stuff would help, but the aviation version is the only oil additive that is recommended almost universally. THe engines that call for 0W-x oil have tighter clearances and are made for the light oil. if the mfgr call for 0W-20, that is what should be used. some call for 0W-30. the 0W-40 may be the spec for some, but none I have seen. From Mobil: Their oil finder says to use 229.3 or 229.5, and recommends their 0W40 and 5W50. 0W40 has zinc and phosphorus levels of 1000 and 1100 ppm, as does 5W50. 10W40 high mileage is also 1000 and 1100. 15w50 that I use in my 2.3-16 is 1200 and 1300 5W40 TDT is 1130 and 1250. Does 13% more really make a difference? If so, am I better off with the 15W50? I used 0W40 in both our M119 and M104. Peter recommends the 5W40. It's actually $6.75/quart (you say the 5W40 is a four quart jug), while the others are $4.80/quart. At a seven quart fill, the difference is $13.65 for an oil change. But Peter's point is still true. Re: [MBZ] M119 oil
Truck and turbo only, it's the only on of them you mention that I KNOW has the necessary lubricants for high friction flat surfaces -- I don't know the design of the M119 all that well, but if it uses cams running on rocker arms, it needs the high friction flat surface lubricants. [MBZ] M119 oil
Need to change the oil in the 1997 S420. Already have driven it almost 500 miles with who knows what in the sump, probably 5w30 dino oil. Made the trip to WallyWorld, home of the cheap Mobil 1, and found: 0W40 Euro car formula $24/5qt IIRC, this is the stuff that many 60x diesel owners have reported makes increased valve train noise. I only use it in my M112 because it's required there. 10W40 high mileage car formula $24/5qt. I bought this, but I'm not sure about the "helps seal oil leaks" part. Does it have seal swelling additives that would decrease seal life? 20W50 standard formula $24/5qt. I thought it might be a bit thick for year round use in a M119. 5W40 Turbo Diesel Truck $27/4 qt. This is probably the best M119 oil they had in stock, but I was not thrilled with the price. What do you guys think I should do?
