Re: [MBZ] OT GM bashing
The oil issue was related to overheating if I recall correctly. The engine was unique. It was an aluminum block with no sleeves. The aluminum was high in silicates (and this may be an incorrect description )The aluminum was etched back to leave only the silicates as the wear surface. It worked fairly well as long as the engine was not overheated. The heat caused problems that resulted in either bad oil consumption or outright seizure. Operating it here in Canada where the temperatures are not as hot for as long probably was better than trying to do so in the southern USA. The other problem was that there was really no way to resurface the block in the field. Got to give GM credit for going with an advanced design even if it ultimately bit them. Depreciation of less than $500 per year on a new car is not bad. They had a *terrible* reputation in the U.S, and not just for rusting. They supposedly used so much oil that GM did a recall to link the ignition to the oil pressure sender, so the engine would shut off if you ran the car out of oil. My dad bought one new and had a really hard time getting rid of it -- car lots would only deal with him if he promised to drive the Vega back off the lot instead of trading it in. ___ For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://striplin.net/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_striplin.net
Re: [MBZ] GM/What?
GM did ? That needs to be re-thought. Lets see who killed the diesel market as far as cars go. (Diesel pickups are OK, actually becoming a fad)) Brainwashing the public that diesel is nasty and smells bad (gasoline is perfume) is a direct consequence of not having laws on the books that control Joe Public's diesel motors without stepping on Long Haul Frank's foot. There are no laws that prohibit anyone to import, domestically manufacture or sell diesels. There are incentives offered not to do that (licensing, taxing, permitting, looking the other way, etc.) . VW is the only company left that chooses to ignored that offer (mandate ?). My humble opinion is that it is not GM, but how about the Federalis ? Texas: $ 12 for a annual inspection of a diesel car; $40 for a gasser. Diesel car = they check the brakes and the lights. Gasser = they plug it in the OBD. For a long time those were the most stolen cars in the country. The reason? They were all basically the same car, and most of the parts interchanged, so there was a huge used parts market available to anyone who ran a chop shop. With all those cars on the road, who was going to suspect the origins of a cheap, used fender for an '86 Buick? Also, at the time, GM was making ignition switch and steering column assemblies that were easy to pop.
[MBZ] Warm ups?
Here's my $.02 if you want it. Let your car warm up for 5 minutes or so in the warm weather and 10 minutes in the really cold stuff. Just because the oil pressure guage shows pressure it doesn't always mean EVERYTHING in the engine is oiled yet. My best friends father used to do a demonstration with an old Chevy 250 inline 6. He would remove te rocker cover and tell someone to start the car and watch the manual oil pressure gauge he had under the hood. The gauge would go up after only a few seconds signifying oil pressure.BUTThe rockers were still not getting oil.Took some of them a good minute and a half to pump up the lifters and get the whole engine oiling properly. This anecdotal scenario is precisely why Mobil 1 0W40 exists, according to Exxon-Mobil, Porsche and Mercedes. Lubrication right now down in the deep dark corners of the engine during a cold start. BTW, that old Chebbie engine most likely had Havoline 30W or something similar in it. And another BTW. Before someone with a 240D claims that 0W40 is too watery for his hi-po engine, I shall point out that The Porsche Carrera GT's V-10 engine's factory oil fill is, what else, but Mobil 1 0W40. In MO, the Federal background check is only required for long gun purhcases when you buy from an FFL (gun store, etc). Private sales are no different than buying a cord of wood. Buying a car from your buddy is far more complicated than buying a rifle from your buddy...fitting as cars are FAR more dangerous than guns :-) In MO, however, you do need a PTA (permit to acquire) a handgun. I really HATE this law. Technically, I cannot lend my pistol to my wife without violating this law...loaning, even to your wife is an illegal transfer without having this $10 form...and I would need another $10 form for her to lend it to me. Re: [MBZ] OT Speaker Repair
Fred, google stereo speaker driver repair and you'll see there are loads of places that will do it for a reasonable fee ($20 or so and shipping) As you might guess, it is a common failure. Same failure theory as the MB vacuum actuators for the door locks!! Good luck. This is an OT request for info about Stereo speaker repairs. I have an old, circa 1980, pair of made in Poland stereo speakers that need repair/replacement of the foam plastic suspension stuff around the speaker cone. The speaker cone itself is in as new condition, the foam has partly separated and is very fragile. These 10 speakers have a mount (body?) ring of machined aluminum about 1 thick. Questions, are these worth fixing, does anyone still do this? or should I just buy new speakers? As you can tell, I'm not at all knowledgeable about audio bits and thingys. So I bought an '85 190D 2.2l 5spd. Its in New Jersey, I'm in MA. Theres a couple ways to go retrieve it. Travel down w/no car and drive it back. Drive down with my wife and caravan back. Drive the truck down and somehow tow it back. My truck is a '96 Dodge Dakota, the 190D is definately within its limits for towing. [MBZ] blower motor repair
This is on a model that many of us can't afford. My brother-in-law (some of you might remember Gene from the last OkieQ) has been asked to replace the blower motor in his boss's Benz -- 94 or 95 E420. Black paint, black leather interior, tinted windows. And no, but owner isn't African-American. Actually, he is originally from Iran. A millionaire -- in a business that doesn't involve the importing of oil. He sells aircraft parts. Where is this blower motor located? Anyone have the pdf with the procedure (cough, hello there Marshall?)? Part is $700 from the dealership (yes Rusty, I will check your prices) and labor is quoted as $400. Thanks for the assistance. [MBZ] AKP-Wagen conundrum...
The original plan with the AKP-Wagen was for alternative fuel testing. But I recently moved 6 blocks from work, 5 blocks from Church, 5 blocks from my daughter's school and within 2 miles of everywhere I go. We all know that you can run a diesel on whateverthanol for a short period...but for me to test it for a long period, I have to drive it all the time. This leaves the SD parked...which I don't like. It seems to not like being parked for long periods. So should I abandon the alternative fuel project and sell it for $500 and drive the SD all the time OR would it be better to keep it for my 6/10 of a mile commute (saving alot of wear and tear on the SD) and just drive the SD on weekends when I run alot of errands. Of course the SD or TD are always for long trips, depending on the # of kids (everyone fits in the TD with the third seat). I really wish I had a longer commute. I love driving the SD and I'm never going to make 1,000,000 miles driving 1.2 miles/day for 5 days a week...but that can't be helped. Marshall made a comment a few weeks ago that some part of the GP relay can fail if it sits for a couple weeks. Not sure...just don't need three cars when I have nowhere to drive. If I abandoned the alternative fuel, I think I would rename it RostWagen (Rust Car). I think someone on the list mentioned that they were looking for their own AKP-Wagen...anyone remember who that was? Thoughts? Will be out of internet world till tomorrow morning, so won't be responding till then. Rent a dolly from U-haul. Not sure about the driveshaft with an mb, but the tow itself is a piece of cake. tows fine. Easy to do. Tell U-haul you're towing the lightest make and model car you can think of, though--they've got some kind of formula of tow-vehicle weight to towed-vehicle weight and they won't rent it to you unless it fits the formula, which is pretty conservative, and way below the tow rating of most tow vehicles. You can lie, and they'll never know, unless you're invovled in an accident, in which case there insurance won't cover it. I didn't get their insurance, and wasn't worried, so I just lied. I've towed my vanagon Westfalia a couple thousand miles on such a dolly, and a diesel jetta hundreds of miles--both at 70 mph. Felt fine. Have fun! Dan So I bought an '85 190D 2.2l 5spd. Better biometric fingerprint scanners are near-impervious to such a feat. They don't read the ridges on the surface, but the ridge pattern below the epidermis, in the dermal layer of the skin. [MBZ] Delvac Exists in Canada!
I'd kept my eyes open for the last year for Delvac 1 in Canada, but didn't see it anywhere. I figured it just wasn't available. But when I took my Golf TDI to Mr. Lube for an oil change on the weekend, they had no Mobil 1 15w50. Instead, the guy pulled out a jub of Mobil Delvac 1. I couldn't believe my eyes and promptly requested that he put that stuff in my car. Sweet. On a side note, a big later-model Ford diesel pickup pulled into the bay facing me. They drained the old oil and when it was time to replenish the goo, they pulled out a big cardboard box. Then one guy started withdrawing litre containers from the box and lining them up on the truck while the other guy poured them in. I asked how many they were going to stick in that engine. 14.5 litres was the reply, and that it was only dino oil. My Golf took a mere 4.5 but at least it was synthetic. Tim 1982 300TD Moby

Re: [MBZ] turbo seal?
That sounds very similar to the symptoms when my head gasket blew (603.971). Oil started leaking into the #1 cylinder. Be careful about cranking/running it at all now. When I pulled the head, the #1 piston did not protrude as far as the others and I had to replace the connecting rod. Looking back, the bent rod could have been caused by hydrolock from the oil seeping into the cylinder from the extended cranking and short runs I made when I was diagnosing the problem. All that oil made the compression test results flaky so I was scratching my head for a while. Sometimes the compression on #1 would be 100 psi lower than the others, sometimes it would be 150 higher. I finally chanced to look into the prechamber when #1 was at TDC after I had been cranking the engine for a compression test and saw oil rising to cover the glow plug. Had that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach... -Dave Walton 94 S350, 99 E300 On 11/29/05, Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Zeitgeist wrote: My OM603 has just now started to smoke (blue) so much so, that I think I'll be parking her for some time. Re: [MBZ] VW origins (was Something fishy at Mercedes)
I didn't know that, but the bug was quickly remade into the Kubelwagen (a jeep essentially)...it saw wide service (aka the THING, when it came to the US). An amphibious version was the schwimmwagen and a special 4WD with huge tire version for SS officers was called the Kommander?-Wagen. One of Hitlers first acts as Chancellor was a visit to the Berlin auto show where he scolded the German car industry for building the best cars in the world, but not a practical one that the average German could afford. He compared ownership rates to the US. Porsche eventually visited Ford (awarded the highest medal a foreigner ever received from the Reich for his help in increasing industrial production in Germany - his views on Jews dove-tailed with the Nazis, yet he helped to send tanks to the Soviets later...capitalist!) to learn about cheap mass production. Hitler promoted racing by heavily funding both MB and Auto Union (if you're the master race, you need to win - and they did). The result was the VW plant at KdF Stadt (now Wolfsburg)...the car was built under a Nazi agency: Kraft durch Freude (Strength through Joy) and, IMO, it was a great thing. VERY cheap cruises, trips, and all sorts of programs to raise the general wllbeing of the working class. VW was a state owned plant/project integrated into this agency's mission. Nto to be confused with the RAD (Reich Arbeiter Deinst), which was similiar to our WPA, also a good thing, IMO. I WOULD like to know more about the rear-engine, air-cooled MB's of the era. Saw a picture of 1 once. It was NOT a VW built at Untertuerkheim, but MB's own design - yet similar from the outside. Also interesting is the story of an American GI who became friends with a top MB executive right after the war. I forget the names of both. THe German liked to hunt, but was not allowed to have guns and the GI had the guns. They hit it off. Around here, if you buy a gun at a gun store or whatever, you have to fill out this deal and answer some questions, they call a phone number and find out if you are approved or not. The gun is then tranferred to you. If you buy from an individual, most of the time its just a cash deal and thats it. Its possible the seller will want to go to a gun dealer and have the paperwork filled out to transfer the gun to you. I bought mine in a parking lot of a crowded publix supermarket on a saturday afternoon from a gun nut with a van full of assault rifles. this transaction took place in plain site of not only shoppers, but also a police cruiser on patrol. Buying an AK-47 is no big deal here. as for hte urgency of the situation, if hte gun is not actually out of my possession, no one can be killed by it. and if it is out of my possession, searching would not bring it back and prevent its use in a violent crime. As I have never been in this position before, I was asking more out of an interest in what protocol would be. my trunk was locked. i never have a firearm out of my immediate possession that is not locked. it is simply gone and i don't yet know how. right now i'm mostly trying to locate the serial number so i can report it missing. i'm not sure my attitude is all that oh well.'' I am profoundly upset by this. It's a disgrace to have your firearm disappear on you and a serious breach of a shooter's unwritten code. losing your firearm is terrible thing the likes of which i never thought would happen to someone like me. Well, OK Don and Curt agree - beat the AKP-Wagen into the ground and keep the SD for Saturday errands, Sunday drives and road trips. I considered selling it to a workmate for $1. He needs a second car. He bought a 220D brand new in 1973 (or so) and drove it for 19 years. He's older than me, a really nice guy, has a LONG commute to work and continue putting crap in the tank and continue the experiment...but I think I will just use it for these terribly short commutes, esp when it is -5 C like this morning. Re: [MBZ] Kaleb's going to Iowa
Looks Like Kaleb got himself a 280 SE Euro with US bumpers. Interesting that it does not have velour seats Iowa's way to license a non US version has been to title it as the next-closest US version. It is probably titled as a 380SE My first car was a rusted out 56 Karmann Ghia. I took it up to the courthouse to change the title, and get the license. They told me it didn't exist. I told them it did, and they could go outside and look at it. In the end, they licensed it as a 56 bug. At 08:22 AM 11/30/2005, you wrote: Kaleb, That looks like too nice a car to part out. No biggie, just make sure the trips in the SD count, meaning no shorty runs like you'll be doing with the 240D or if you do some short runs make sure theres a good long run to get everything warmed up and burn the condensation out of the engine. Keep the fuel tank topped off and maybe give it a shot of water remover every other month or something. Might have to change the oil a little more often but as Marshall says you won't know without analysis... Also nothing says you HAVE to take the 240D, you could take the SD a couple times a week if you wanted... -Curt Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2005 06:28:06 -0800 (PST) From: Christopher McCann [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] AKP-Wagen conundrum... Gary Hurst wrote: well, i've never lost a gun before, so i really wasn't sure what the standard procedure is. it wasn't loaded so some kid would have trouble shooting someone with it. it has no magazine either. granted, all of that could be simply remedied but it would make it less likely that some kid would kill someone with it. more likely, i'd think, it was sold to criminals on the cheap if it was taken. these weapons are relatively easy to acquire in the state of georgia. anyone can go to any gun show and buy one. I cannot help the situation much as my failure is not a present one, but the past failure of losing my weapon. I don't believe anyone will be killed or injured on account of this and, even if there is a risk of this happening, i don't believe that getting hysterical can do anything but further erode the situation. -- Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] OT Concealed Carry, was Global warming
no paperwork. i gave him $500 and he gave me the gun. i had him write me a receipt though and took his business card On 11/29/05, Kaleb C. Striplin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: So if you bought it from a dude in a parking lot, did you have to fill out any papework to transfer ownership? Around here, if you buy a gun at a gun store or whatever, you have to fill out this deal and answer some questions, they call a phone number and find out if you are approved or not. The gun is then tranferred to you. If you buy from an individual, most of the time its just a cash deal and thats it. Its possible the seller will want to go to a gun dealer and have the paperwork filled out to transfer the gun to you. I cannot help the situation much as my failure is not a present one, but the past failure of losing my weapon. I don't believe anyone will be killed or injured on account of this and, even if there is a risk of this happening, i don't believe that getting hysterical can do anything but further erode the situation. -- Kaleb C. I could see the control unit and the thermostat for the parking heater, looks like an Eberspacher ( espar ) if it is, good luck finding parts in North America for it, been there, no go. only place I've found for parts for one of that vintage is ebay germany, even there, I couldn't find a combination air induction and coolant pump, and the us distributor said if they could get one,the price was more than I could get a whole new unit for. Re: [MBZ] looks like Im going to Iowa
whats this heater you are talking about? There's an extra control panel in the cabin, one of the buttons has a flame on it. By the exhaust manifold is some black boxery that's probably the heater proper. As I was the first (?) to notice this, if you part out the car that of course gives me first dibs on that heater, right? :-) Parts? I don't need no steenking parts, I have a welder! -- Jim
[MBZ] Franken-heapery
Updates: November 29, 2005 Dang. One of the snow tires is leaking, it was down to 15 psi this morning. Sigh, more crap to fix. Two of the four glue joints on the hood star failed, so I took it off and brought it in for more gluing. This time I made the wads of glue bigger. We'll see if it helps. Really it should be silver-soldered or something, but I've never done that. I moved the baby seat from the 450 SL to this car, and while I was installing it I noticed that the rear-window defroster, a cheap Chinese fan/heater thingy, now looks like it had been made by Salvador Dali. Completely melted into wavy shapes due to the sun beating in on the rear deck where it had been stored all summer. Not only the housing was wiped out, which maybe I could have corrected and/or lived with, but the blower's squirrel-cage fan was destroyed as well. Not a total loss, however, as I then got out the other one that was unopened in the trunk, and used the dead one's power cord to lengthen the new one's. This will allow better routing of the cable. (The dead one can supply a motor, a switch, a lighter plug, and a heating element to the junk box. Around here I keep [Use? I wish!] everything but the squeal!) I also made a little sheet-metal bracket that wedges behind the seatback to help hold the fan in position. It used to tip over so its feeble jet of barely-warm air went nowhere useful. Memo to self: next spring when putting the car away, put the fan someplace else! ...On errands today (such as getting license tabs for it) the car behaved well. It was even snowing most of the time, but no problems, and only a little fishtailing going up the hill. The relatively poor interior lighting (only one dome light) is not great, as is the lack of a real rear window defogger, but otherwise it was a pleasant trip for us all. I think my wife is a little surprised that this car is as nice as it is now. The functional (!) heater blower was very useful on this trip, we had a lot of interior fogging. November 30, 2005 I installed the re-glued hood ornament this morning. The snow that fell overnight on the warm car had frozen all the doors shut, so I just plugged in the preheating system, and 20 minutes later the windows were clearing and the door opened. It doesn't get any easier than that! -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] turbo seal?
Dave/Marshall, The idea of me doing that test is totally out of the question... well, almost. :) I've done some weird things with repairing cars, like forgetting to release the parking brake before removing the rear rotors (the front wheels were blocked). I was thinking they were just rusted on, so I banged on the old rotor and made one helluva racket that the entire neighborhood heard. Even cracked the silly thing. Imagine that. Damned fool thing to do and I was lucky that I was putting on a new one or I'd have been really disgusted. When I finally discovered my stupidity luckily no one noticed (as they had all disappeared by then, or had their backs turned and were all talking about something completely different than my malady). Obviously, as soon as I released the parking brake, the damned things came off very easily. :) Oh, dopey me. Now, about the battery cable idea. :) It kinda makes some sense in getting more power to the plugs, but I am not about to traipse into the dealer and ask for a heavier/thicker battery cable. In fact, if I do anything like this, I will put a switch on the purple GP wire (where-ever the heck that thing is located) so the GPs will kind of pre-heat before I attempt to start the bloody car. Oh yeah... I plan on using 15w50 from now on... it will be changed out this coming weekend. And, once again, I don't plan on selling the beast anytime soon. Give me another couple of years to (hopefully) save up for a new C-class and I'll be happy. Maybe by then, M-B will be importing the C220CDI. :) Thanks to everyone who's replied... it has once again given me hope and dispair. Continued hope in this illustrious group as well as hope that all will be fine with little effort and money; and dispair that I could have been dumb enough to use 5w30 (I should have known better).
