Re: [MBZ] Cheap fix for 124 front window regulator missing teeth?

2008-05-16 Thread Jim Cathey
That I can do, although it might require taking the old regulator out
to drill holes, and I was trying to avoid that...

For ultimate satisfaction, assuming the sector gear
is steel (don't have a 124, no experience), I'd suggest
taking it out and using a welder to put back steel, then
file/grind the teeth back. That, in fact, would likely be
_easier_ than what you propose, assuming you have to take
the regulator out in any event. Good as new in an hour?

Mine too, but buying a $350 300E in basically good working order has
driven me to new depths of cheapness for the amusement value and
challenge. (So far the total expenditure, car plus parts, to make a
decent daily driver, stands at $550 or so, plus about 15 hours' labor
 here and there.)

Welcome to my world! Keeping the total tab low can be
a very fun game to play, and often can 'justify' acquiring
cool new tools. (Separate budget, tool money doesn't count!)
It's amazing how little money you can spend to get a
well-functioning and reliable daily driver of the sort we
love here, assuming you've got no fear, time and tools, and
perhaps no pride (of the conventional sort).

My mom, upon hearing of my stunt welding pieces of microwave
oven over the holes in the Frankenheap's sheet metal, helpfully
suggested that I cut the cord off so it wouldn't drag on the
ground.

Re: [MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

2008-05-16 Thread Jim Cathey
I have some welding to do on one eighth inch steel and one eighth inch
aluminum. Can someone with wire-feed welder experience suggest a
brand and type of wire-feed welder to buy? Lowes website shows two
Lincoln wirefeed welders. Lincoln stick welders were pretty good
 quality years ago:

I bought a Millermatic 175, their smallest 220V welder. The
extra heat capacity could come in handy, though I don't believe
I've had to turn it up all the way yet. I like the continuous
heat and wire speed settings that it has. I'm a little suspicious
of buying something that's rated at up to the very thickness
of material you need to tackle for the first project. I paid
an extra $100 for 220V, and another extra $100 for blue (Miller),
I think it came in at about $500. Gas bottle extra. (And
gas refills around here _really_ jumped up in price lately.
Doubled?)

1/8 steel is relatively easy to weld. I might suggest the
basic $50 yard-sale stick welder for that. I have a Miller
that I bought for that price. That and an auto-darkening
helmet and some gloves and you're in business. No help on
aluminum, though.

Welding aluminum is tricky. You need, as I recall, to really
crank up the heat/feed to make it work. You also really need
a spool gun, or at least a teflon liner for the existing rig.
Aluminum kinks very easily, so you have to keep the lead very
straight. If you have to do a lot of it the spool gun is easier.
You need a larger tip for the aluminum wire.

The same rig that'll do 1/8 steel will _not_ do 1/8 aluminum,
not enough heat. The little aluminum welding I've done looks
_bad_. (But worked.) Beautiful welds on aluminum seem to be
done with great skill, and/or TIG welders. (Supposedly you can
weld aluminum with an oxyacetylene rig, I've never tried.)

You also need Argon shielding gas, not the cheaper CO2 mixes.
I have a separate small Ar bottle for aluminum. You must use
gas when welding aluminum. That narrows your choices a bit.

Gerry,

I've been looking at welders too. A lot of internet research shows the
experts don't like any of the big box welders. They all claim
they've been cheapened up in feed mechanisms and the specsmanship to
the point where you have to be pretty careful.

I've been eying a Hobart 135 for a big 110V or a Miller 175 for a
reasonable 220V unit. I'm kinda torm right now between portable 110V
and sacrifice heat, or a 220V that's much more capable, but less
portable.

There's a Hobart 135 on Cragslist here for $300 that is real tempting.

Re: [MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

2008-05-16 Thread LWB250
Having worked clsoely with Miller and Lincoln as a part of my former generator
work, you can't go wrong with either of these name brands, IMHO. Just stay
away from the consumer big box stuff that they brand label and you'll be fine.

There are boatloads of industrial welders out there for purchase if you watch
local equipment auctions. You have to really know what you're looking for,
since there are variants even within model numbers for some manufacturers, but
if you're careful and patient you can find some nice older welders that are far
better than the consumer grade crap that's being pushed out these days.

My pesonal choice based on limited use would be Lincoln for stick welders and
Miller for wire feed. I welded many a piece of steel with an old Lincoln
sausage motor/generator welder years ago. They were nearly indestructible.

And definitely go for 220/240 whenever possible. It allows you a much higher
heat range in most stick welders.

of thing would not fly in Germany.

the little I know about downdraft gassifiers is that you need a large

For ultimate satisfaction, assuming the sector gear

taking it out and using a welder to put back steel, then
file/grind the teeth back. That, in fact, would likely be
_easier_ than what you propose, assuming you have to take
the regulator out in any event. Good as new in an hour?

That's plan B if I can't screw/rivet/JB a bridge to fit the spot
where the teeth are missing in such a way that it lines up with the
rest of the teeth well enough so the motor is happy. I don't want to
take the regulator out if I can help it. You are lucky not to have a
124 in this particular instance. (I thought you had a wagon out in
the woods, though? Or is that a 123?)

determined that they could indeed repair the cracks. It would take about
 an

 Estimated
cost about $55 - $60. A far cry from the top I would have been willing to
pay. Hopefully a good outcome, but I'll be watching that spot for a few
years. I rest easier tonight, and tomorrow I will try to figure out
transportation to get it back to the MB shop to have the numerous fuel and

Re: [MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

2008-05-16 Thread R A Bennell
I think it sort of depends upon where the crack is and what the circumstances
are - IE is it an open area where you
can get at it to add a patch. I recall reading something on the net a while
back about the proper means of
repairing cracked truck frame rails. I think the suggestion there was to weld a
diamond shaped patch over the
repaired area.

Re: [MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

2008-05-16 Thread LarryT
Hi Guys -
It's been a long time since I had to research this stuff but I believe
welding steel to alum takes a special rod material - not sure if it's
available in a wire feed spool type - it may have to be a arc weld rod..

Somewhere I have a welding handbook which provides all the rod matl and
what they will work on - will try to find that or search the web. I think
you will need to know the kind of steel and the kind of aluminum you wish to
join.

The steel will vary depending on the carbon content - as well as some
other materials that are often added to provide certain properties.

But as I say - it's been a long time (early 70s) since I had to
determine if the proper weld material was used

BTW, I bought a Lincoln MIG welder from Home Despot - Handy Man or
something like that. I paid around $300 IIRC and my only complain is the
need for some additional adjustment of the heat ranges -- that's what I'd
look for in my next one - infinite heat adjustment. Also, I have the gas
shield option and find it;s works well -

Good luck -

Subject: [MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

When I went to get the car, necessitating signing a statement to the
 effect
that I was informed that the car was not safe to drive, the wife of the
owner [who does the front desk work] seemed surprised that I was going to
investigate having it fixed and not scrap it. I took it to the welders,
 and
felt for a moment like I had tossed a live chicken into a pool of gators.
They drove it up on a rack over an open bay and 4 welders descended
[literally, they had to walk down stairs] on the RF tire area with someone
checking it from every angle. I had talked with the owner about the
 issue
of high strength and some poor welding in the past, and the critical
 nature
of this for it to be my 'forever' car. A few minutes later the had
determined that they could indeed repair the cracks. It would take about
 an
hour from getting the undercoating off and getting it cleaned up.
 Estimated
cost about $55 - $60. A far cry from the top I would have been willing to
pay. Hopefully a good outcome, but I'll be watching that spot for a few
years. I rest easier tonight, and tomorrow I will try to figure out
transportation to get it back to the MB shop to have the numerous fuel and
vacuum issues addressed. Manfred made a huge difference with the sharp
 eye
 on the throttle linkages.

2008-05-16 Thread R A Bennell
Generally, he may not have to inform you of things that do not work, so long as
he answers honestly if you ask him.
I think one of the issues in the case at hand was that the vendor had
represented the car as being very good. One
would normally expect that to mean the A/C works on a newer model Mercedes,
(hey, in my world, 10 years old IS a
newer model Mercedes) wouldn't you think? So this issue is not so much the fact
that he kept his mouth shut as it
is that he lied, or in kinder terms, misrepresented the condition of the
vehicle.

Re: [MBZ] CB160 Starter Problems

2008-05-16 Thread Curt Raymond

Light on? Light dims when you hit the starter? Could be a battery thats charged
but isn't holding good.
A volt meter on the battery when you hit the starter will tell more. I've had
them sag to single digits at which point the starter isn't much good.
You could pull the starter (I don't know how difficult it is on that bike) and
bench test it.
Finally an ammeter in line with the battery will show current draw, very high
current draw indicates a bad start or a bad connection. Its gotta be a pretty
big ammeter though (ie more than a multimeter) since the starter must draw
(guessing here) 100amps or so.

Re: [MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

2008-05-16 Thread PM7088
I have a very cheap consumer quality 110v Miller wire feed. I added a gas
option as I was used to doing TIG at work with attending gas coverage. It used
.035 solid wire.

A complete waste of time and money, it had a duty cycle of about 20 seconds,
would that trip it's internal breaker.

I left it in a corner of the garage as a reminder of cheap tools.

Couple years later a friend (Engineer him) was visiting and saw it, I told him
the story. He told me to toss the gas bottle and use .035 flux filled wire.
Rational, less wire to melt, little machine will be happy, weld will need
chipping as when doing stick work.

To make this long story short, this machine is very happy doing 1/8 carbon
steel. Slow? Yes but it will do it fine. For my garage work, it is all I need
in and emergency.

Pete

WRONG! In Kansas, (and likely most other states) a dealer sells a car with an
implied warranty of merchantability. Normally, I am on your side on this,
Luther. I represent one of the largest Ford Dealers in the Country. The
company gets sued all the time. We almost always win. But, a dealer cannot
sell a car that is in such bad shape that it does not meet the purpose of a
car. I am not saying that is the case with this Mercedes having no a/c. BUT,
your statement that a dealer does not have to disclose anything is clearly not
correct. EVERY state has requirements about certain things that must be
disclosed (as does federal law).

Re: [MBZ] Lawsuuit over a Mercedes

2008-05-16 Thread Mitch Haley
There was a case in Michigan where a buyer revoked acceptance of the
vehicle when he discovered it to be unfit for his purposes.
His work required him to drive through Detroit at night. He ordered
a new station wagon with the special heavy duty tires. A day or two
after delivery, he discovered that it had no spare tire, went back
to the dealer, and asked for his spare. When he found out it was no
oversight, and it would be some unknown number of months before they
intended to give him a spare, he refused to drive the car home or
make payments on it. Eventually ruled in the consumer's favor in
a narrow ruling that said the lack of a spare tire made the car
undriveable for HIM, because getting stranded in Detroit would
cause him to die of murder.

A similar thing happened to my father in the fall of 1976 when
he bought his 1977 Nova. He knew at the time of purchase that
there was no spare in the car at delivery (I believe his dealer
properly disclosed the fact). He wrote a pair of spare rims into
the deal for the car. Took the rims to the tire store and had
snow tires mounted. Between my father and his boss, they had a
total of ten wheels for their two new cars, so each had a spare to
carry. The situation resolved itself the next spring when the tire
shortage was over and the spare tires were available at the dealer.

And definitely go for 220/240 whenever possible. It allows you a much
higher heat range in most stick welders.
So far as 'lack' of portability is concerned, I think you can
power them from your typical rope-pull generattle. So it's not
like you're completely tied to the house or anything.
Also, if you go 220V few of your friends will be tempted
to borrow it!

I've been eying a Hobart 135 for a big 110V or a Miller 175 for a

There's a Hobart 135 on Cragslist here for $300 that is real tempting.

There are boatloads of industrial welders out there for purchase if you

manufacturers, but if you're careful and patient you can find some nice
older welders that are far better than the consumer grade crap that's being

My pesonal choice based on limited use would be Lincoln for stick welders

Used regulators are about $45 or so on eBay last time I looked.

You won't fix it short of replacing the rack.

Grease the replacement regularly, they last forever that way, and
replace the channel when it gets shrunken.

I have a very cheap consumer quality 110v Miller wire feed. I added a
gas option as I was used to doing TIG at work with attending gas
coverage. It used .035 solid wire.

A complete waste of time and money, it had a duty cycle of about 20
seconds, would that trip it's internal breaker.

I left it in a corner of the garage as a reminder of cheap tools.

Couple years later a friend (Engineer him) was visiting and saw it, I
told him the story. He told me to toss the gas bottle and use .035 flux
filled wire. Rational, less wire to melt, little machine will be
happy, weld will need chipping as when doing stick work.

To make this long story short, this machine is very happy doing 1/8
carbon steel. Slow? Yes but it will do it fine. For my garage work, it
is all I need in and emergency.

Just got back from checking out an '83 SEC. Car has sat for 3 years, has
132,000 kms. Body has some paint issues, and I see a little bondo where the
paint is pealing over on rear arch. Will need new brakes, and I'm sure
several other things to sort it out. It's a 380, not a 500. Guy is asking

TURN IT DOWN! Chicken want to cook low and slow. Put some hickory
chips in a disposable aluminum pan, the will smoke for awhile. I'm so
addicted to the I've bought a smoker to cook many foods the low SLOW

burn chickens, try a bone in pork roast. Just don't over cook it!
Better than prime rib when done right.

put dry Rub on before cooking, NO BBQ sauce un till the cooking is

WRONG! In Kansas, (and likely most other states) a dealer sells a car with
an implied warranty of merchantability. Normally, I am on your side on
this, Luther. I represent one of the largest Ford Dealers in the Country.
The company gets sued all the time. We almost always win. But, a dealer

BUT, your statement that a dealer does not have to disclose anything is

Re: [MBZ] Lawsuit over a Mercedes

2008-05-16 Thread Hendrik Fay
It depends on the definition of what a car is supposed to do. Is it
supposed to move people from A to B in comfort or just move them from
point to point. The dissenting judge touched on this by saying that a
new or near new luxury car must have comfort whereas a Kaleb special
just needs wheels.
What about something more serious such as a cut and shut job. The car
will still work as it should until it is involved in a serious accident
at which time it may well break in two and seriously injure/kill it's
occupants. Is a cut and shut car still merchantable?
Say you went out and bought a Chinese car, the dealer says it is a safe
car. You have an accident and end up in a wheelchair, so you sue the
dealer because he said it is safe when in fact it is not.
Of course the dealer will argue that when he said safe he meant it is
safer than riding a bike and not mean it is safe as in 5 star safe. Did
he mis-represent the product, is the car merchantable?
Is occupant protection a key feature of a new car or a luxury item?
Anyway interesting that you mention that your Ford dealer almost always
wins, I am guessing having deep pockets and the ability to write off
litigation costs as a business expense helps.

Donald Snook wrote:

WRONG! In Kansas, (and likely most other states) a dealer sells a car with
an implied warranty of merchantability. Normally, I am on your side on
this, Luther. I represent one of the largest Ford Dealers in the Country.
The company gets sued all the time. We almost always win. But, a dealer
cannot sell a car that is in such bad shape that it does not meet the purpose
of a car. I am not saying that is the case with this Mercedes having no a/c.
BUT, your statement that a dealer does not have to disclose anything is
clearly not correct. EVERY state has requirements about certain things that
must be disclosed (as does federal law).

Over here if you are caught without a spare or an unusable spare, the
police can defect your car.
Not sure but I think in Germany the law is that you must carry spare
bulbs so that you can fix burnt out ones on the spot.

Re: [MBZ] OT rotisserie question

2008-05-16 Thread Rich Thomas
You can also buy a Cajun Injector, which is just a big syringe you can
inject the chicken (or turkey if you are frying it) with a variety of
sauces you can either buy or make yourself. This keeps it really moist
and very flavorful. Or you can just poke a few holes in the skin and
push in some seasonings, garlic, lemon or lime bits, sauce, onion bits,
dressings of some kind, or some combination of all of the above,
whatever, between skin and meat. That keeps it moist too, and flavors
up the meat. As suggested, no sugary sauce until the end, although a
vinegar-based sauce is fine (with a bit of olive oil to keep it moister)
as long as it does not have a lot of goopy stuff. I put some vinegar,
cut-up onion, pepper, seasonings of various kinds, mustard, a small bit
of ketchup (has sugar), hot sauce, beer, whiskey (my uncle used to put
some KY bourbon in his sauce, a wonderful flavor) whatever you like in a
blender and pulverize that for a good marinade/sauce. Then at the end
add some ketchup and molasses to that sauce to baste with, finsih to get
crispy.

YUM

I have that same grill!

Re: [MBZ] OT rotisserie question

2008-05-16 Thread Bill R
I should probably start by saying I don't like prime rib. Cook it so it is
a rib eye and you've got me. Love those, and fortunately some restaurants
will cook it either way for me. The guy I was reading suggested that
chicken skin would only be edible when cooked on a high heat, so that was my
first try. The chicken itself was quite good, just the skin was a tad
cremated, and not to bad even so. I do have a smoker, but have only used it
to do a couple of turkeys at T-day, guess I should have a go at that also.
I do a lot of low and slow in my Dutch oven, so will try that on the grill -
what settings / time do you use for chicken?

TURN IT DOWN! Chicken want to cook low and slow. Put some hickory
chips in a disposable aluminum pan, the will smoke for awhile. I'm so
addicted to the I've bought a smoker to cook many foods the low SLOW
WAY. But, it can be done on your grill. After learning how not to
burn chickens, try a bone in pork roast. Just don't over cook it!
Better than prime rib when done right.

put dry Rub on before cooking, NO BBQ sauce un till the cooking is
done. The sugar in BBQ sauce burns, you don't want that.

Secret rib receipt follows: Marinade them o'night in Caesars salad
dressing, cook then very slow, add smoke, you'll like these without
sauce, add if you like after cooking.

We bought one of those cheap electric smokers - vertacle drum shaped -
and have really enjoyed it. I cut pieces of pecan sticks (picked up in
the back yard), place them beside the element, replace them every
hour, and smoke several birds and cheap pork loins at a time. I rub
curry powoder/garlic salt on the pork, and leave the birds as-is.
Yummy stuff every time. Takes about five hours. I use it year round.

Re: [MBZ] OT rotisserie question

2008-05-16 Thread Peter Frederick
Low and slow is the only way to cook ribs (I do them on one side of
the grill with only the other side lit, as low as it will go, cook at
least 6 hours -- slop on some sauce once in a while and turn when you
go past while working outside).

Chicken, you have to cook all the way through (you don't want
salmonella poisoning) and with a rotisserie you can use high heat.
450 is OK, you may want 425 -- this depends on your grill, the
thermometer, and where it is placed since it's not actually in the
chicken, which would be the best place.

As noted, no sugar containing sauce while using high heat, it burns.
Use some Tandoori seasoning instead as a rub, good flavor and no sugar.

It will dry out horribly, especially the white meat, if over cooked.

The rotation rate is also a consideration -- you want it high enough
to cook evenly while still allowing the bird to crisp early to keep
it juicy.

Have fun!

You're better off with a lower heat and a longer cooking. Rotisserie
is the best for chicken!

And give the skin a few pokes with a fork to make some dribble holes
for the juices!

Re: [MBZ] brisket

2008-05-16 Thread Rich Thomas
For brisket, I put it in the oven overnight at 250F with all the stuff
(Lyndon Johnson's recipe) wrapped in foil and let it get real tender,
then you open up the foil, leaving it sitting in all the juices, and put
it in your barbeque (that would be a smoker to all you non-Texans, not a
GRILL!!!) in the morning and let it go 6-8 hours with some hickory,
pecan, mesquite, oak, or maple for the fire. The juices evaporate,
concentrate, leaving one excellent flavor. Then it is fall-apart
tender, moist, smoky. You can also do the dry rub, and smoke it low and
slow, it tends to be a bit drier and chewier but every bit as tasty.
Plenty o' Shiner Bocks to wash it down. Man that is some fine eatin.

Damn I am going to have to go get some brisket and ribs tomorrow, y'all
have got me all hungry now.
