Re: [MBZ] And now for something completely different (not OT) - R/R W123 coolant hose

2015-06-10 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
My 85 300D was doing the same thing. I discovered the bendy line from the
drivers side block to the heater line had a crack in it. It would only have a
notable leak when coolant was full. I kept filling it up every couple of days
before I left for work and would not see any leaks. I finally filled it when it
was hot, I think I had the heater running, and noticed the leak. I loosened the
cap and ordered a new hose from Gary. All is well now.

The funny thing is, I discovered the leak b/c the car was over heating
(usually it runs cool). I popped the hood and saw the short hose was
oozing coolant, so I topped it up - took nearly a gallon of H2O through the
 filler tank.

Now that the radiator coolant level is back to normal, the hose no longer
 drips. WTF???

Careful too because some of the MB hoses are not the same diameter at both

 nothing at all.

How do I get a part number for it? Or do I simply order generic (approx.
1 dia.) coolant hose and cut it to match?

If it doesn't have any molded bends in it and Goodyear or Gates quality is
 good
enough for you (5-10 year life vs maybe 10-20 for factory)
you can just take it off, and have the guys at FLAPS cut an appropriate
 piece
off a roll of bulk hose to match it. Hopefully if it isn't close enough to
 a
common inch denominated side to do that, they'll tell you instead of
 selling you
 a too-large hose.

If you want it RIGHT, go here and look it up.
You have to give them a credit card to activate a free one year
 subscription,
 IIRC.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Ting cell phone service

2015-06-10 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I went with Republic Wireless almost a year ago from Verizon. My bill went from
$91 to $43.I did have to buy a new phone but with that monthly savings it only
took about 6 months to pay for it, never mind the cash I got back for selling
an iPhone 5.
I get unlimited talk and text with 5GB data. Looks like with Ting I could
potentially save some more since I never really go over about .5GB.LTE coverage
seems to extend to my camp in Maine too which would be nice, currently I'm in
roaming data there which mean I only get 25MB of data which runs out quick. Dad
bought a hotspot so I can just buy a few gigs of data service but its not as
handy as actually having it on my phone and my phone won't act as a hotspot on
my current provider.Still, it doesn't look like I could save more than maybe
$15/mo, lots of phone options though which is nice.
Angie is still using ATT @$70/mo, maybe this will be an option for her.

We get the alternator, head back to the house, and spend an hour swapping

[MBZ] OT Wealthy R loses his mind

2015-06-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
POLITICS:GOP businessman launches effort to convince conservatives on
climate

Republican climate activist Jay Faison, who yesterday announced a $175
million campaign to promote conservative action on warming, cautioned his
party's presidential candidates to steer clear of skepticism on the
campaign trail.

He believes that moderate Republican voters, especially those who are under
30 or Latino, could abandon the party if they're faced with a nominee who
expresses doubt about mounting scientific findings around man-made warming.

I think it will cost them if they take that position, Faison said in an
interview. I think they know that.

The wealthy entrepreneur plans to make his own waves in the race. He
announced yesterday the creation of a $10 million nonprofit group that can
be active in electoral politics. It's still unnamed, and Faison admits that
he hasn't settled on a clear strategy for the foundation.

I think there's quite a bit of specific legislative advocacy that can
happen, he said. I think there's some electoral politics that we should
be playing in. This is a political game, and we don't want to be
restricted.

For all the attention accompanying his money, Faison said he hasn't settled
on a specific legislative policy to address climbing temperatures, which he
describes as the world's biggest risk and the biggest opportunity.

He emphasizes free-market solutions and acknowledges giving grants to the
R Street Institute and the Niskanen Center, both of which promote
revenue-neutral carbon taxes. He said that option and others are on the
table. But he won't be pinned down.

There's a lot of good Republican solutions available, Faison said. I
think it's a little early to prescribe the solution. We need to start the
dialogue first.
Challenging Democratic dominance with 'smarter' arguments?

For now, Faison said his ClearPath Foundation, another nonprofit prohibited
from electioneering, and a new website launched yesterday named
clearpath.org will seek to build a Republican climate movement by focusing
on the science and the effects of warming.

And that means avoiding gloomy warnings about global catastrophes. They
don't appeal to his tribe.

I think as a movement we've got to be smarter about how we position our
arguments, Faison said. We don't want to slam capitalism. I think we need
to be realists. I think we need to talk about solutions that businesses
will like.

In years past, Faison said, he was frustrated by the omnipresent
Democratic ownership of the climate issue. When he sold his North
Carolina-based company SnapAV, which distributes an array of electronic
components like computer cords, security systems and speakers for specialty
installers of audio-visual systems, Faison jumped into the climate realm --
as a rich donor.

Environmental groups welcomed his participation yesterday, but some
observers downplayed the impact of his investment, noting that the fossil
fuel industry is injecting much more money to influence the debate (
*Greenwire* http://www.eenews.net/greenwire/2015/06/09/stories/1060019906,
June 9, 2015).

That made Faison laugh.

It's a lot more money than there was yesterday, he said of pro-climate
efforts.

Look, I know, the other side's got a lot of money and a lot of power, but
I encourage the whole community to be positive and start framing the
arguments in ways that are appealing to both sides of the aisle, he said.

The truth is on our side, he added. So we don't need to beat the New
York Yankees with the most money. But we do need to be on the same
ballfield.

full charging system check, so I climb in the car with him and we go to
another Advance Auto nearby (we have two within four miles of the house.)

We get there, they test the system, flat line for alternator output.
Bingo! So much for the reman I bought from them and installed on the car
back in November of last year, with lifetime warranty, I might add.

So we return to the house and jump in my car, as it's now dark and I don't
want to risk it in his car with the headlights on. We then go to the other
Advance Auto to get an alternator, which the other store didn't have in
 stock.

Interestingly, this part number was not the one for the car in their
application list, however, it was in November. Not only that, but in
November the core was $105! It's now $50. Strange.

We get the alternator, head back to the house, and spend an hour swapping
it out. New one works just fine, makes plenty of electricity.

Today the parts for the S500 come in. I only hope I am as lucky with it as
we were with the S420. And I hope this is the end of car issues for a
while. I'm beginning to feel like a full time mechanic.

[MBZ] OT More Crazy Weather Not to Worry About

2015-06-10 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Here's something else to not be concerned about - probably a left wing
conspiracy by NOAA.

We already knew Alaska was having some crazy weather lately. That included
a record 91 degrees
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/capital-weather-gang/wp/2015/05/26/alaska-recorded-its-hottest-temperature-so-early-in-the-season-over-memorial-day-weekend/in
Eagle in May, the “hottest temperature ever recorded so early in the
calendar year in our 49th state,” per

 our own Capital Weather Gang.

And now, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/sotc/summary-info/national/201505 that the state
as a whole experienced its warmest May in the weather books. As the agency
puts it:

The Alaska

statewide average temperature for May was the warmest on record in 91
years of record keeping at 44.9°F, 7.1°F above average. The warmth in
Alaska was widespread with several cities were record warm, including
Barrow and Juneau.

The consequences of this warmth were myriad, including much early year
melting of snow.

As we have previously reported, North America saw its t

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/06/03/from-alaska-to-california-may-snow-cover-was-the-third-lowest-on-record/
for May of 2015. And as you can see in the figure below, much of that was
due to anomalously low snow cover across Alaska:
Rutgers Global Snow Lab http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/

So doesn’t this just mean Alaskans are having some awesome late spring and
early summer weather, and are going to get to spend more time outdoors
enjoying it?

Maybe, but there’s a major downside to new Alaskan heat records like this
one — which relates to how the polar amplification of global warming
https://www.ipcc.ch/pdf/unfccc/sbsta40/SB40_research_dialogue_hezel_wgI.pdf
could
actually make global warming itself worse.

If there’s less snow cover in the high north
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/06/03/from-alaska-to-california-may-snow-cover-was-the-third-lowest-on-record/,
then more sun reaches the bare earth, which is darker and absorbs more of
it, as David Robinson, a snow cover expert from Rutgers, explained last
week. And that increases the chance of thawing permafrost — frozen soil
beneath the surface.

Across the Arctic, permafrost soils contain massive amounts of carbon
dioxide
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/04/01/the-arctic-climate-threat-that-nobodys-even-talking-about-yet/.
Scientists think these soils are going to start emitting, and it
won’t always be a slow, steady process. Large bursts of carbon may also be
released in northern megafires
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/05/14/how-massive-wildfires-can-actually-warm-the-planet/
—
like one that occurred on the North Slope in 2007. As I reported in May
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/05/14/how-massive-wildfires-can-actually-warm-the-planet/
:

One region where wildfires could have a large climate impact is in the
forest of the Arctic. The fear is of a future featuring more fires like the
gigantic, “unprecedented
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v475/n7357/full/nature10283.html” 2007
Anaktuvuk River fire
http://www.iab.uaf.edu/news/news_release_by_id.php?release_id=94 that
consumed 1,039 square kilometers of North Slope tundra, single-handedly
giving off 2.1 million metric tons of carbon. And 60 percent of that, a
team of scientists found
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v475/n7357/full/nature10283.html in
2011, came not from vegetation but from the Arctic’s carbon-rich permafrost
soils, which the fire had burned away.

There’s no telling how hot Alaska will get this summer, but the state is
off to an incredible start.

How do I get a part number for it? Or do I simply order generic
(approx.
1 dia.) coolant hose and cut it to match?

If it doesn't have any molded bends in it and Goodyear or Gates quality
is
 good
enough for you (5-10 year life vs maybe 10-20 for factory)
you can just take it off, and have the guys at FLAPS cut an appropriate
 piece
off a roll of bulk hose to match it. Hopefully if it isn't close enough
to
 a
common inch denominated side to do that, they'll tell you instead of
 selling you
 a too-large hose.

If you want it RIGHT, go here and look it up.
You have to give them a credit card to activate a free one year
 subscription,
 IIRC.

If you read the article.. it says she was STABBED TO DEATH... so he killed
her with a knife...

Later, he shot himself.. source of that gun is unreported.. I wager it was
stolen, and since he was a FELON.. by law, can NEVER legally own a gun..

Last report I heard.. bringing a knife to a gun fight pretty much means you
LOSE... in this case.. the poor dead woman lacked the means to defend
herself.. although she make every legal step to try to..

Sad... It is my opinion the state is responsible for a wrongful death by
denying the woman the right to arm herself while failing to provide
protection for her..

I'm sure the knife the man had cut right through the order of protection
she held in front of her...

Sam Clovis stated the criteria for involvement very well. (USAF
Col., Retired)

1. National Interest?
2. protection of resources necessary for our economy?
3. Protection of our allies?

I am for Sam's criteria, then if we get involved, the involvement
should be a Patton-like response and the day after the start, the
rest of the world should be in shock beyond shock and awe so that
every tin pot dictator will think 24 times before they provoke us
ever again.(think twice a dozen times)

THAT was the USA I grew up in and that is what our folks in the
Military services can do.

Teddy Roosevelt said it very well in his first term before he lost
his mind. Speak softly but carry a BIG stick We have several big
sticks available.

No bully (tin pan dictator) ever bothers again once you hit them
hard. Every 'merkun kid used to learn that on the schoolyard,
whether the bully or the bullied.

I had a long fuse as a kid, but when the would be dictators didn't
back off, the attack was calculated, positioned, deliberate and
decisive. It was also final. Only one dumb irish kid ever came back
for more. After a couple years he forgot the lesson. After the
second lesson, he was never heard from again, going on 50 years now.
He was around for a few more years, but his mouth was shut. Dealing
with tin pot dictators from Dung or Vlad on down to andorra is the
same.

I didn't agree with reagan much when he was Pres, but history has
born out his economic policies over the long haul, and the little tin
pot dictator in libya was not heard from until billybob was elected
and he thought he could mouth off safely.

LITTLE BOATS AND 6 JUN 1944
By Wilton W. Strickland

My brother, Lewis Clyde Strickland, then 21 and with 3 1/2 yrs in the US
Navy, was the senior noncommissioned officer (NCO)/leader of a 48-man
platoon of the 6th Naval Beach Battalion that went ashore on Omaha Beach,
France, at 0730 on the 6th of June, 1944, to clear obstacles, secure the
beach and control traffic to, from and on the beach. The unit was composed
of many specialties, including demolition, signalmen, radiomen, riflemen,
doctors, medical corpsmen (medics), bulldozer operators and others -
whatever necessary to manage the beach. They wore army combat uniforms and
trained with the Army for the invasion. The only thing visible to
distinguish them from army troops was an arc painted across the front of
their helmets. Most of the men in his platoon were teenagers just 17, 18
and 19 years old.

Several of the older men had been in the invasion of Sicily and a few, such
as Lewis, had been in the invasion of North Africa, where his ship had been
sunk just offshore in Oct '42. Though small in stature, Lewis was a giant
in courage, dedication to accomplishing the mission, determination and care
for the men in his platoon. He served as their mentor, their mother,
their father, their leader. They affectionately called him, Little
Boats, in honor of his Navy specialty, boatswain's or boson's mate. Ensign
Joe Vaghi, just out of college and new to the Navy when he became the
platoon's Officer-In-Command (OIC) in late '43, said of Little Boats in
2001, He taught me everything I ever needed to know about the Navy.
Little Boats died of pneumonia in 1997.

The platoon had trained extensively for several months with army troops at
Camp Bradford, VA, Fort Pierce, FL, and Swansea, Wales. They were delivered
to Omaha beach on LCI(L) 88, (an infantry landing craft) operated by members
of the US Coast Guard, as were many of the vessels in the invasion fleet.

In 2001, I had the very distinct honor and pleasure of interviewing several
of Little Boats' men and several of the equally brave Coasties (US Coast
Guard) who delivered them to the beach on that fateful day of June 6, 1944,
the memory of which should make all Americans, British, Canadians and other
allies stand tall with pride. Most of the following is excerpted from those
interviews:

One of the seventeen-year-old riflemen, Seaman John Hanley, remembers, We
formed up on the main deck of the LCI at the top of the port (left) ramp.
Ensign Vaghi was # 1, and his assistants, Ensign Wright # 2, BM/1C Little
Boats Strickland was # 3, I was # 4, and several of the other young
riflemen were immediately behind me. As we approached the line of
departure, we could see smoke from the shelling rising from the beach.
About that time, an LCT coming out of the smoke off the beach on our port
side let off a barrage of rockets. The German 88's had him straddled; you
could see the shells hitting the water 8 to 10 feet behind 'im. She was at
battle speed - 8 or 9 knots, and that's the last I saw of the LCT - we
started passing 'im - we were coming up on the beach for the landing.

Ensign Vaghi adds, On the beach were multiple rows of different types of
obstacles, some with mines on them - tank traps, landing craft traps and
amphibious truck (DUKW) traps. Later I learned that where we landed was the
widest opening on the beach. The Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT)
certainly did their jobs well. We lucked out by off-loading at low tide,
too. If we had gone in at mid or high tide amid all those obstacles and
mines, we would have been in serious trouble. Other landing craft, LCI(L)
#85, for example, took quite a beating - a direct hit on the bow and on the
starboard side, but we were lucky, we made our landing, and all of our
platoon got ashore.

Hanley: Yeah, we were surrounded by those mines on poles, but the Skipper
found his way through an opening, or we were just lucky. As soon as I heard
and felt the LCI hit bottom, the ramps on both sides went down. Vaghi was
already going when the ramp hit the water. The seamen behind me were
yelling, Go, Go, Go! I was trying to keep up with Vaghi and Little Boats
as we flew down that ramp! It seemed like a long way down, too. When I saw
that Vaghi and Little Boats were in the water, I threw my pack over the side
and took just my rifle. When I hit the water, Ensign Vaghi and Little Boats
were still right ahead of me. Two or three other seamen were with me.
Little Boats and I were immediately in water up to our chins. There were
dead infantrymen in the water all around me, and dead and wounded all around

In 1969 and 1970 we had a bunch of crazy weather. Many pundits blamed it in

I saw most of that show, too, though I missed first few minutes. 'Could be,
if the craft were an LCI(L) with infantry ramps that come down on each side
near the bow (not a Higgins boat). Whenever I see one of those scenes now,
I try to study the person(s) for recognition; so far, 'haven't recognized
one as my brother, Lewis (Little Boats). They're not usually in view long
