[MBZ] Daimler enters the home batteries market

2015-06-11 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
AUTOS:Following Tesla, Daimler enters the at-home battery space
Published: Thursday, June 11, 2015

Last summer, Tesla Motors Inc., in a move meant to stimulate improvements
in electric vehicle technology and an expansion of the sector, made its
patents free to outsiders.

Since then, Toyota Motor Corp., Hyundai Motor Co. and Ford Motor Co. have
opened up alternative fuel patents, too, and Audi AG announced plans in
February to buy patents from Ballard Power Systems, a fuel cell producer.

Two days ago, Daimler AG, the corporate parent of Mercedes-Benz and Smart,
unveiled a product that again has Tesla looking like an automotive
tastemaker -- a residential and commercial electric battery.

Customers can now order Mercedes-Benz's private energy storage plants,
knee-high silver towers each with 2.5 kilowatt-hours in electric storage
capacity.

The company will present the batteries at the Intersolar trade show in
Munich today and Friday, Daimler said in a statement
http://media.daimler.com/dcmedia/0-921-657589-1-1820346-1-0-0-0-0-1-0-0-0...@aj.a1.s177018-0-0-0-0.html?TS=1433965032404
.

Deliveries are set to begin in September, and Daimler has not revealed a
price or name for the electric units.

Daimler said Tuesday that owners can combine up to eight batteries, which
will be available for companies and private households, into a 20-kWh
system.

In May, Tesla announced a similar electric battery system, the Powerwall, a
sleek lithium-ion block that buyers can mount on their walls, as well as
the Powerpack, 100-kWh batteries for utilities (*ClimateWire*
http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/stories/1060017795/, May 1). Owners
will be able to stack as many as nine Powerwalls.

The Powerwall comes in 7- and 10-kWh versions, for $3,000 and $3,500,
respectively, which doesn't include installation costs.

I think it's fascinating to see this development, Karl Brauer, a senior
analyst with Kelley Blue Book, said in a call about the Daimler battery.

As photovoltaic systems drop in price, become easier to install and
maintain, and get more energy efficient, car and battery companies are
going to scramble into the power storage business, he said.

In October, Daimler sold the last of its 4 percent stake in Tesla. At the
time, the company said it would continue to purchase electric batteries
from Tesla for its 87-mile-range B-Class plug-in electric car. Mercedes
offers its own at-home charging stations.

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk told shareholders this week the company
will double the power output of the Powerwall (*ClimateWire*
http://www.eenews.net/climatewire/stories/1060019963, June 10).

Batteries are going to be huge, Brauer said. I think you're going to
keep seeing this come up, he said, adding that if Musk, through Tesla or
otherwise, can profitably produce batteries, that could dwarf anything he
could come up with related to cars.

Some of you may hjave seen it before.

LITTLE BOATS AND 6 JUN 1944
By Wilton W. Strickland

My brother, Lewis Clyde Strickland, then 21 and with 3 1/2 yrs in
the US

Navy, was the senior noncommissioned officer (NCO)/leader of a 48-man
platoon of the 6th Naval Beach Battalion that went ashore on Omaha
Beach,
France, at 0730 on the 6th of June, 1944, to clear obstacles, secure
the
beach and control traffic to, from and on the beach. The unit was
composed
of many specialties, including demolition, signalmen, radiomen,
riflemen,

doctors, medical corpsmen (medics), bulldozer operators and others -
whatever necessary to manage the beach. They wore army combat
uniforms and

trained with the Army for the invasion. The only thing visible to
distinguish them from army troops was an arc painted across the
front of
their helmets. Most of the men in his platoon were teenagers just
17, 18

and 19 years old.

Several of the older men had been in the invasion of Sicily and a
few, such
as Lewis, had been in the invasion of North Africa, where his ship
had been
sunk just offshore in Oct '42. Though small in stature, Lewis was a
giant
in courage, dedication to accomplishing the mission, determination
and care

for the men in his platoon. He served as their mentor, their mother,
their father, their leader. They affectionately called him, Little
Boats, in honor of his Navy specialty, boatswain's or boson's mate.
Ensign

Joe Vaghi, just out of college and new to the Navy when he became the
platoon's Officer-In-Command (OIC) in late '43, said of Little Boats in
2001, He taught me everything I ever needed to know about the Navy.
Little Boats died of pneumonia in 1997.

The platoon had trained extensively for several months with army
troops at
Camp Bradford, VA, Fort Pierce, FL, and Swansea, Wales. They were
delivered
to Omaha beach on LCI(L) 88, (an infantry landing craft) operated by
members
of the US Coast Guard, as were many of the vessels in the invasion
fleet.

In 2001, I had the very distinct honor and pleasure of interviewing
several
of Little Boats' men and several of the equally brave Coasties (US
Coast
Guard) who delivered them to the beach on that fateful day of June
6, 1944,
the memory of which should make all Americans, British, Canadians
and other
allies stand tall with pride. Most of the following is excerpted
from those

interviews:

One of the seventeen-year-old riflemen, Seaman John Hanley,
remembers, We
formed up on the main deck of the LCI at the top of the port (left)
ramp.
Ensign Vaghi was # 1, and his assistants, Ensign Wright # 2, BM/1C
Little

Boats Strickland was # 3, I was # 4, and several of the other young
riflemen were immediately behind me. As we approached the line of
departure, we could see smoke from the shelling rising from the beach.
About that time, an LCT coming out of the smoke off the beach on our
port
side let off a barrage of rockets. The German 88's had him
straddled; you
could see the shells hitting the water 8 to 10 feet behind 'im. She
was at

battle speed - 8 or 9 knots, and that's the last I saw of the LCT - we
started passing 'im - we were coming up on the beach for the landing.

Ensign Vaghi adds, On the beach were multiple rows of different
types of
obstacles, some with mines on them - tank traps, landing craft traps

Re: [MBZ] trouble right here in River City

2015-06-11 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes

What is the collective view on rebuilt units?

If I could get a kit, I would have no qualms about putting it in but
those days seem to be behind us. I guess it is the result of labour
costs in the shops. People are not willing to pay the cost of having
kits installed - just faster and cheaper to throw in a new or rebuilt
unit even if it is not as good as the original.
I would guess, given the car is close to 40 years old that it is just
the rubber giving up but I suppose we would not know if the bore was
corroded by water in the brake fluid eating away at it over time unless
we opened it up first.

That AutohausAZ unit claims it is new oem but with the grommets is
pushing $300 US and with our dollar the way it is, that will run closer
to $400 Cdn plus 13% tax at the border. Ugh!

Cannot complain too much as I have had the car about 10 years and have
done little or nothing to it. Have not driven it all that far either but
it has been reliable to date.

I got a reman for like $40 for the 123. Not hard to put in, at that
price you can go through a bunch, though not sure why a reman would not
work, I think they just machine the bore and put in a slightly larger
plunger or o-rings, nothing too magic about that. The one I got had a
lifetime warranty, so cheap enough.

 IMHE:

get new or reman. If you try to put in new parts (cups), you find a
rusty bore, crusted with crap. Then if you clean it up, you end up
with a pitted bore and a leaky MC. The alternative is to bore it and
put in a sleeve of SS or brass, but then it costs more than a new MC
in every case I have looked at. If you had your own machine shop and
time, I'd sleeve em. I don't, so I don't.

I think the last one I bought was a beck arnley from FLAPS. I have

Your choice. The darn things are heavy and costly to ship. Last time I did
this job, genuine MBZ disks were surprisingly inexpensive (like $50 each).

I usually re-bolt the wheel to the hub (just 2-3 bolts) to hold the hub
while I loosen and tighten the bolts that hold the disk to the hub (and I
blue-Loctite those bolts).

[MBZ] OT: Southeast asia

2015-06-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Greetings from the Philippines! I'm here for the next 8 days teaching a class
to new co-workers. Apparently it makes more sense to send me here than 8 of
them to the states. After traveling for 26 hours (thats door to door) I can see
why.The highlight of the trip was when I scored a bulkhead seat in the 787 from
BOS-NRT. The 787 is amazing and the huge legroom in a bulkhead seat is nice.
JAL gives nice wide seats too although the bulkhead seats get small TVs.From
NRT to MNL was a 767 and although I had and aisle seat I was cramped almost to
my tolerance limit the whole way, of course that was after the 12 hour flight
BOS-NRT and a 3 hour layover...
Anyway I'll be working 10pm-7am local time which corresponds with 10am-7pm EDT
so other than for the next 3 days (remember its Friday morning here right now)
I'll be working just 1 hour off my normal US schedule.
Driving to the hotel yesterday I noticed that diesel is about 30 PHP
(Philippine pesos) a litre, there are about 45 pesos/USD so about $0.66/l. The
car from the airport was a Camry (boring!) but I got to see loads of jeepneys
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeepney which are pretty wild. They remind me of
the route taxis that Angie and I rode in Barbados but are decorated more in a
style I'd relate to India which isn't a big surprise since India isn't really
all that far away. It was dark last night or I'd have tried to get a picture.
I'll try to spot one today but I'm staying in Makati City which is pretty high
class and I'm not sure they're allowed here...

I feel like rebuilding a very old brake MC like yours is at best going to be
hit or miss, theres no telling how much corrosion is in there. I bet theres no

For this I'd say buy a rebuilt, its not worth farting around rebuilding it

My good old 76 115 300D had a hiccup this morning, which is totally
unlike it.

I was at a light when the car creeped ahead. I thought I had a senior
moment and had failed to keep my foot firmly planted on the brake.
I stepped harder and it sat there for the duration of the  red light,
but on the next block, I stepped on the brake pedal and it essentially
sank to the floor. Not a good thing in traffic.
I drove it the few blocks home at lunch and put it back in the garage
but something is wrong. It brakes but not very hard and pumping the
pedal does not all that much to make it better.

It feels like when one presses on the pedal while another bleeds the
brakes. It just slowly descends until close to the floor.

I have looked where it was parked and do not see any puddles of fluid.
The resevoir does not look to be down.

I shall have to look a bit closer to see if there is something leaking.

If not, then I suspect the master cylinder is leaking internally.

Anyone have a better conclusion based upon the symptoms?

If so, is there a kit to repair or am I compelled to replace the whole
thing?
In either case, where would one best look for parts?
