I think the 123 has transcended and is no longer a Mercedes, but *the*
Mercedes. It's the face that everyone thought of in the 80's, so everyone
that grew up in the 80's, 90's remember it best.

Maybe it was always a hot mess and I've only realized it recently? Don't
know. The junk I've been seeing through my local craigslist and the numbers
attached to it, complete with the grammar issues and bad information. The
last vehicle I put up on Craigslist was a couple of years ago. Stayed up
for full term, and I re-posted. I'm not selling a new car, sure, but a good
solid driver with a $1000 price tag. All day long emails coming in "Give
you $200 for it." I'm sure you would. *I'd* give $200 for it, and I'm the
one selling it. *sigh* Then we haven't even gotten into the car deals that
have "gone down" where the guy buying shows up with the cash, and the guy
selling leaves with the cash, and the car. Gotten bad enough around here
most people only want to do deals in front of the police. My wife is far
past the point of "Don't ever use Craigslist again, ever." There just has
to be a better way, I think.

How do you get a car out there in the wild, generate traffic, and get a

Re: [MBZ] OT: Elon Musk's very awkward moment...

2018-05-31 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
It actually isn't the autonomous software that worries me, they *will*
perfect that. They *will* get the software to a point that it will *never*
have a crash, or kill a pedestrian for any reason. *That* is the part that
worries me.

I watched a lot of anime in the 90s, I could have sworn it was Ghost in the
Shell that scared me so bad. However, I haven't been able to re-find the
scene in question, so it must have been another Japanese animated feature.

Where in, they had *perfected* autonomous auto driving software, and the
entire world trusted it because no one drove their own car anymore. Then,
someone is able to crack the software of a driving car and send it off a
cliff. What are we going to do when our great-grandchildren inherently
trust artificial intelligence and think granddad is being stupid for
keeping the 66 fintail with manual drive in the garage and a virus starts
killing us because we have given over so much control to our automatons?

That movie was *terrifying* to me.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Activating wireless service on CentOS 7 / MATE

2018-05-21 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Unfortunately Red Hat 7 changed *everything*

Network checks are now done through the Network Manager. So command calls
start with nmcli.

*nmcli connection modify wlan0 help*

Also, ifconfig has been deprecated since Red Hat 6 and in 7 I believe it is
just a symlink to the net ip command.

*ip addr help*

A good starting resource is here:

https://access.redhat.com/articles/1189123

and lists most common administrator functions and how they are called in
RHEL 5, 6, and 7.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Activating wireless service on CentOS 7 / MATE

2018-05-17 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Though, I gotta ask, why CEntOS? Are you running it in an Enterprise /
Production environment? I mean, if you are that's great. Red Hat work pays
for my bacon. But otherwise, the stability comes at the cost of newer
technologies that most home / laptop users would want. Fedora / Ubuntu
would be a better choice from that perspective.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 (RHEL7 / CEntOS7) has a very good WiFi
interface. As long as you installed the appropriate packages, it should
recognize the wireless nic and ask you to walk through setup.

Windows 10: Hit the Windows button or click on the Window Icon on the task

Re: [MBZ] OT saw a car that I wanted at lunchtime and it was not even an MB

2018-02-08 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Love the Panther body in all forms. Have driven and been in a few, but not
yet owned one.

However, had a LT1 - 9C1 Interceptor for a few years. That car was insane.
Blew the water pump, sold her and bought a Roadmaster wagon. (Also LT1) and
*somehow* that thing was even more insane. The 9C1 could keep up with a
Vette from the same year in straight line acceleration, and I don't know
how they did that either considering the Caprice had to weigh at least
twice what the Vette did, but I felt like that wagon was even faster.
Previous owner might have chipped it or something, because the only other
car I've ever owned that made me grin like that was an 86 IROC-Z that would
get sideways on beefy tires on dry pavement. That car was terrifying. Don't
try to take a Vette in a curve though, thing was built to *Intercept* not
*Pursue*

Re: [MBZ] Nice dead 240d

Also, as an aside, if the manual transmissions are suddenly selling to
people who want to convert their automatics, I'd say you don't even have to
keep the car stock. You say it is too nice to part out, well, maybe convert
it to automatic, make sure it has a good serviceable engine, and then sell
it *and* the manual parts and come out well ahead. That's all probably
easier said than done, though, even for someone who works on old Mercedes
all the time.

Hell, get it running really well and put it up on BaT-crap insane and get
(blast now I can't remember who sold their car on there recently sorry) but
get the guy that paid several thou for a 123 down to buy her. Be great fun
for the entire family, or something.

Well ... *this*
https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item=1=9367 could
be very dangerous. YMCA has not been able to afford the property, it was
taken by the municipality. A lease agreement of 60K annual was signed, but
so far YMCA has only been able to honor 24K annual. So there is no current
taxes on the property, since it is government owned, but a For Profit will
start being taxed immediately at 2.829% on a total assessment of
$3,107,600.00. Starting bid is only $5,000 though. Who wants to incorporate

2017-06-22 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
So many people think these cars are built from gold pressed platinum just
because they have a three pointed star. I'm always walking up on old Benz
with for sale signs in the window, only to see new car prices on the card
for rusted out hulks. It's horrifying to be honest. You can buy a Rolls
Royce Silver Spirit in good shape for 10 - 15K. Too many Americans just
don't understand that Mercedes is the GM of Germany. They have very "Chevy
Level" cars for entry ownership to the "Dictator Level" cars for the
"Cadillac Feel." I love old Mercedes, but that doesn't mean they are worth
the asking price on most of them. Anyway, rant off.

Re: [MBZ] Anybody want an '82 Lincoln Continental on BAT?

2017-06-21 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Sounds like the guy is just an old Ford collector. One of the Jalopnik guys
had an article about how he almost couldn't give his old luxo barge away
and lost money on it. So it is all subjective. Find the right guy and you
can name your own price.

Re: [MBZ] OT NT4 and Iomega Zip

2017-06-06 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Sorry, I kind of rambled there toward the end. My point was, Iomega had
products most everyone in the industry wanted for one use or another. All
they had to do was make them quality and the world would have beaten a path
to their door. Instead class action lawsuits, bad taste in the public
mouth, and the loss of, I assume, a very lucrative contract to put a Zip
floppy in almost every Mac saw their stock plummet and a buyout occur.

Re: [MBZ] OT NT4 and Iomega Zip

2017-06-06 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Iomega had gold on their hands, but their quality control was absolutely
horrific. The "click of death" would have been easily avoided by just a
little QA on the backend. *Everyone* wanted a Zip back in the day. It is
actually my firm belief that the click of death warranty repairs to Macs is
what caused Jobs to demand an end to *all* floppy based media back in the
day. The entire industry flipped its collective wig when the first iMac was
unveiled with *no* floppy. USB thumb drives were not as readily available
at this time either, though this helped to build that industry too.
CD/DVD's were "good enough" and for everything else there was the network,
since the i in iMac stood for Internet, and as such meant the system was
designed around being networked.

I once sold upper management on a plan to use the Iomega Jaz drives in
support systems. We had contracts with communications providers dealing
with the "Big Three" and their supply chains. The original plan was to have
several systems to use for troubleshooting. Kind of odd that even then most
people were using a form of Windows as their "Enterprise OS" but our
primary systems were UltraSparc Suns. So instead of having several
computers we had a single x86 system with a Jaz and "hard floppies" we
could use to boot DOS, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0
Workstation, NT Server, Linux, BSD and early x86 Solaris. So we could "see"
what the customer was seeing to walk them through menu choices and control
panels over the phone. Then the ticketing and other "day to day" work was
done in Solaris on Sparc.

On a semi-related note: The 32-bit EFI, 32-bit Core Duo Mac Mini (and maybe
the equivalent Macbook) will only address 3 GB of RAM, not the 4GB maximum
of 32-bit architecture. It is slightly annoying have two 2GB DIMMs in my
Mini and only getting to see 3GB of it *sigh* at least the RAM
itself was "free" out of a dead and scrapped laptop.

Yup the 32-bit EFI is fun. However, I know that the 32-bit EFI Mac Pro 1,1
will boot 64 bit Red Hat / CentOS. Because I've been using my CentOS Live

MacPup doesn't include the 32-bit GRUB loader since they assume this is

Re: [MBZ] OT NT4 and Iomega Zip

2017-06-06 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Oh yeah, still have a zip drive in the Power G3 both the Putty and the
Blue and White G3's have Zips I think. Dude, NT 4.0 was odd, still have the
Workstation install disks around somewhere. Microsoft made some slight code
changes to the NT kernel just past 4 because they had claimed that the
Workstation and Servers had *completely* different kernels. Like, didn't
share a line of code different. There was a huge controversy because an IT
firm wrote a program that would forcibly change a single bit in
Workstation, that would boot it into Server mode. You can't do it by hand,
the OS will change it back. Microsoft flipped. It was hilarious at the time.

When I was younger, just a bad little kid,
My mama noticed funny things I did,
Like shootin' puppies with a B B gun
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done
I'd find a pussycat and bash in its head
That's when my mama said

She said, "My boy, I think someday
You'll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay
You'll be a dentist
You have a talent for causin' things pain
Son, be a dentist
People will pay you to be inhumane
Your temperament's wrong for the priesthood
And teaching would suit you still less
Son, be a dentist
You'll be a success!

Re: [MBZ] I hate these kits

2017-06-05 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
If memory serves, the SSK was technically only a chassis ala Cord and
Duesenberg. The manufacturer partnered with a carriage maker and sold
completed vehicles, but they were hand built, not mass produced, so they
weren't all exactly identical. They were sport / race cars, so the bodies
were usually race specific ala today's NASCAR. There were only 40-ish SSK's
ever actually built, and there were a couple of different over all looks.
Most of them were crashed. *None* of which the "Gazelle" actually
effectively "replicates." Realistically the "Studebaker" Excalibur comes
*far* closer to being an SSK replicar than the Gazelle ever did, and the
Excalibur didn't need a hood star as it was built in tribute of the SSK but
as a fully modern new car. Was kind of the first "retro styled" cars,
really, that everything is now trying to be.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Servers

2017-05-17 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Just bought a 1,1 that is wheeling its way to me as we speak. (From
Michigan to Indiana with an estimated arrival of Tuesday, so maybe it is
walking.) I plan to go full on the other direction and strip down the
system I call beast currently running 2 quad core xeons for eight cores and
16 GB of RAM. Maybe I'll even put in a second CD drive. I'll take all that
power you aren't using.

Seriously though, I wouldn't enable wake on LAN if you are going to use the
thing as any type of server. Either it will never sleep, because it is
receiving constant hellos from the rest of the network, or it will take
*seconds* to fully wake each time and your initial request to the server
may time out as it waits for it to wake, then you have to try reaching out
again, which would be annoying in my opinion. What is the power draw of the
equivalent Xeon XServe? Those were designed ground up to be headless
servers.

Yeah, see, I do think that there will be a tipping point and moving forward
*all* new cars will be electrically driven. The electric motors are just
too good at low end torque and such. However, I think the full on electrics
like Tesla will still be the rare bird and the fully electric, yet gas
generated hybrids like Chevy Volts will be the dominant factors.

(Which wouldn't actually work anyway, we have laws about the length of time
you can drive an out of state vehicle before you must get IN plates, but I

Re: [MBZ] Macbook linux?

2017-03-20 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
An Intel Mac is an Intel PC. While Apple has added some customization to
the ROM with the EFI, it is still the base reference Intel EFI underneath.
As long as the GRUB you are using has the support for EFI in it you should
be able to boot. Also, GPT disks are usually a thing in the Apple world,
but I've got standard MBR disks to boot in my Mini. As I said in an earlier
post, though, I've had to install the Linux OS on a straight IBM PC and
transplant the disk. The Intel EFI will recognize the MBR and attempt to
boot it. Ran CentOS 6 on Mini for a while this way.

However, the Apple bit in the EFI is looking for GPT stuff, so *sometimes*
the Live CDs don't boot completely, or can't see the MBR disk once booted
because the Apple portion of the BIOS ROM didn't pass off the HDD as
available because it wasn't GPT. I haven't looked at it real low level or
anything, so I'm not 100% sure where the hiccups start happening. I just
know that I was jaw dropped surprised when I took a disk from a failed
CentOS 6 laptop and dropped into the Mini with a dead HDD that I looked
away to find a disk to boot Mac OS X with and came back to my login prompt
on CentOS 6.

I've used the workaround / trick a couple times since.

Re: [MBZ] Macbook linux?

2017-03-20 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Curley,

Are you sure it is a Core 2? The spec list I'm looking at lists the
processor for a MacBook 1,1 as a Core Duo 1.83 13". That also explains the
2GB RAM cap, the Core Duo's were 32-Bit processors. Technically if you
could get the motherboard to recognize the DIMM it should be able to
address up to 3GB, but there is also the limitation of the 32-Bit EFI BIOS.

So, linux wise, you may want to go as lightweight as possible. Usually I
recommend Elementary OS because it is very Mac like in usage. But it is
also a bit graphics heavy so you might get annoyed with some of the
slowness. A very large amount of the distros today are based around the
Ubuntu base image, which is itself based on Debian. Debian has always had a
huge following. The other major distro would be the RPM style, Fedora
based. CentOS, Red Hat and the like. Someone else mentioned Mint, it is
also an Ubuntu based lightweight distro so would be another good choice.

Though I think you'd probably want to look at something like Lubuntu. It
runs LXDE as the desktop, so doesn't give a lot of the graphics heavy stuff
most new OSes seem to like. It has minimum specs of a P4 and 1GB of RAM, so
will run on the MacBook hardware.

I'll tell you though, I have not had much luck installing Linux directly on
Apple hardware for some reason. Always seem to get a hiccup, so your
mileage may vary. However, I have had luck installing Linux on a more IBM
styled PC system, getting GRUB loaded, yanking the disk and dropping back
in the Mac and watching it boot. Which is really wild, so if you try to
install direct and run into a lot of headaches, maybe do the initial
install on a IBM PC system and see if that works.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gnome 3 and Linux Desktop Managers

2017-02-18 Thread Ed Booher via Mercedes
Eh. Don't worry about learning how to monkey under the hood. As far as
desktop is concerned, you don't *have* to. You just have to choose the
distribution that runs easiest for you. Personally, as far as desktop *NIX
is concerned, Elementary OS is maturing very fast. They are trying very
hard to be the Mac equivalent for Linux. Which means you are needing to
know less and less "under the hood" as they give you graphical
replacements. Which for a desktop is great. Keeping RHEL on my servers,
though.
