Re: [MBZ] new eBay shipping fraud-update

2006-07-29 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Here is my business plan that I TRY to stick to. Auctions always end on
thursday, I work on shipping stuff saturday or sunday, and have a batch
of USPS pickup on Monday, and a fedex pickup on tuesday. If somebody
doesnt pay by then then there item goes out the next week. Sometimes I
get really busy and may miss a week myself, which is why clearly say in
my auctions that if you needed the part yesterday buy new, and allow up
14 business days domestic, 45 for international. I usually only do
international 1 time a month. The rest of the week Im at work and have
to squeeze in rounding up new items to list, getting cars stripped etc
the rest of the time.

There is a good reason you will see disclaimers in some listings reading
something like sellers are not responsible for transit time (comes up
automatically when you specify your shipping cost, in the listing).

What people fail to grasp is that buying from Kaleb or me on eBay isn't the
same as ordering from Amazon.com or some other mail-order outlet with a
dedicated shipping department that cranks stuff out the next day and
probably gets bulk pickups from USPS. I TRY to ship within 48 hours of
payment, but it often takes five to eight days for me to get the item packed
and to the post office.

I've followed this thread on and off and frankly I'm not devestated by what
happened. The seller tried a cheesy ploy and got nailed. Who knows, this may
be a 17-year-old selling this stuff. On the 1-10 scale of possible eBay
FUBARs, this barely gets beyond 2.

Oh and by the way mail fraud is not trying to get over on the post

In fact there was an email from eBay just the other day talking about that

I think the underlying problem here is that eBay has encouraged the
creation of a lot of fixed-price stores. It's really changed the
character of it, because a lot of them are commercial operations that
are using eBay instead of setting up their own e-commerce site.

Had to add my $0.02 here.. I earn a significant portion of my income from
ebay sales, and have been selling on ebay for the last 8 years. All of my

text, and is usually no more than $20. I have to cover the cost of
packaging materials and my time to get the items packaged. Only one percent
of buyers complain, mainly because they failed to read the auction text, and
they’re always satisfied after they receive their item.

I'm not trying to be smart here but you guys really need to rethink your
shipping. There is no reason at all to buy boxes! No reason to buy packing
materials other than tape. Get on the USPS website, sign up and have them
ship to you, AT NO CHARGE, as many Priority Mail boxes you want in all
different sizes and shapes. Free newspapers from the local blab make great
packing material AT NO CHARGE but to go pick it up.
Customers never complain about price and speed when the item arrives in
less than a week even if I don't get it shipped out for a couple days or so.
Flat rate boxes can make things very easy for you as they can be used for
anything that fits in them regardless of weight and only costs $8.10 for
delivery anywhere in the USA, even PR and HI.
No need for a spreadsheet and such, just a bit of common sense that says
you better cover yourself on the fees so start all auctions at no less than
$2.99. You may not make a cent on that item but as long as you ship it
promptly you will gain more positive feedback. Allot of positive feedback
gets you better bids. Comments from buyers about how fast the shipping is
gets you ALLOT more bids. I do all of my auctions from my laptop and hand
write the labels to save costs. Used to keep all sorts of books and such
but E-bay has made things so easy to deal with that I don't even need the
book at the end of the year to file my taxes. Just pull up the sales for
the year, print them out and go.
Anyone who whines about the measly fees that E-Bay and Paypal charge have
never tried to run a business elsewhere for the same costs. It won't
happen. Consider also that I get 1.5% of my fees back just for using my
Paypal debit card.

Guilty as charged. But it isn't necessarily to avoid eBay fees, it is to
sell the item dirt cheap but not lose money on the legitimate fees. I think
everyone knows what is happening when they bid. And I don't inflate too
much, maybe $3 over actual costs. Nothing sucks as much as having an item go
for a penny, charging actual mailing fees, and then losing money when eBay
tacks on their costs.

This can be sticky and sometimes completely innocent. Brand new
OM606IP I recently bought on german ebay with the intention of trading
for a rebuild to go into my '87 wagon was weeks arriving even though
I'd paid for 'express' shipping. Turned out it got to US customs
quick time at which point it was transfered from Deutsch Post to the
good ol' USPS (w/ no tracking) for final delivery. Took about 3 weeks
to get from JFK to me after taking no time at all to get to JFK from
the fatherland. SNAFU is to be expected whenever those idiots get
into the act. Left me a little red faced for the - albeit goot
natured I'll warrant - grief I gave the seller in the interim,
especially after I'd determined that it'd have cost ~$250 to ship the
thing FedEx or DHL instead of the EUR50 I paid for DP.

I agree with Bob. Life is too short to worry about small matters. Stress
like this is not good for you. You got the item. You are happy with it. The
poor guy tried to save a buck and got caught. He paid the extra money and
got it shipped out again didn't he. You had a few days of wondering where it

Re: [MBZ] new eBay shipping fraud-update

2006-07-28 Thread Steve MacSween
This is a good point. People buying on eBay have become increasingly
impatient to have their stuff NOW. It's become markedly worse over the last
year. I have to deal with it more than most of you, as shipping from Canada
takes 2-3x your domestic time.

I think the underlying problem here is that eBay has encouraged the
creation of a lot of fixed-price stores. It's really changed the
character of it, because a lot of them are commercial operations that
are using eBay instead of setting up their own e-commerce site.

[MBZ] new eBay shipping fraud-update

Remember this? So, I stopped by the USPS today and asked them about the
package. I went into it expecting to take a few pictures proving that the
seller short paid the shipping or sent it to the wrong address. It was a bit
different. Turns out he tried to ship it Media Mail to save some 's on
shipping. As if $65 wasn't enough already Anyway, Media Mail is subject
to inspection, and they inspected the package and sent it back (because it
wasn't media) to him to pay $2.19 extra for the shipping. That label for
$2.19 made my post office think it was short paid on shipping when actually
that was the second payment made on the shipping. He tried to save money on
shipping, was busted, and my package arrived over a week late. That is
shoddy!

Now, what is the time frame for leaving feedback? I'm gonna negative him bad

That was taken care of already. It's not being held at the post office. The

So, a package should have arrived today for me from an eBay auction but the
seller short paid the shipping and I owe $6.10. HELL NO, I'm not paying
this. Anyone ever dealt with this type of crap before? I'm tempted to

exploring both PayPal and eBay's sites to see if they say anything about this.

UGH, so I emailed the seller and here's the reply.

That was taken care of already. It's not being held at the post office.
The

package is now on the way. I apologize for the delay and the lack of
communication on my part. You should receive the DVD burner no later than
tuesday.

SOOO, I'll see if it get's here

I asked the MORON 3 times over 3 DAYS what the correct price was. So I

had to take the final EBAY PRICE and send that (which was not enough!)

So, a package should have arrived today for me from an eBay auction but
the

seller short paid the shipping and I owe $6.10. HELL NO, I'm not paying
this. Anyone ever dealt with this type of crap before? I'm tempted to
reject the package and send it back and report Item not received. I'm
exploring both PayPal and eBay's sites to see if they say anything about
this.

Re: [MBZ] new eBay shipping fraud-update

2006-07-27 Thread Luther Gulseth

Flat rate shipping of $65. Price was BIN for $20 or best offer. I offered
$5 and it was accepted. I'm not disputing the price I paid, which was less
than every other auction for this DVD burner I loked at, I'm disupting the
seller trying to save a few bucks at my time expense.

Dave Wakin [EMAIL PROTECTED] said:

Did the auction state actual shipping or was it flat rate?

A lot of times, to avoid eBay fees, the seller inflates the shipping and
states it is fixed. They only pay fees based on the selling price, not
shipping. I always consider shipping as part of my bid price for comparable
 items and bid accordingly.

Geeze louise! Did you get your item? Did you pay a good price? If the
guy wasn't trying to rip you off and just tried to save money on
shipping, why try to burn him with bad feed back with no chance to
respond. Suck it up, quit your bitching, and just move on. Life is too
short.

he actually committed mail fraud, which is a federal offense. Just realize
that sooner or later, he'll get what's coming to him.

I agree with Bob. Life is too short to worry about small matters. Stress
like this is not good for you. You got the
item. You are happy with it. The poor guy tried to save a buck and got
caught. He paid the extra money and got it
shipped out again didn't he. You had a few days of wondering where it was
but it did show up. Could have been a
whole lot worse. Why worry now? Relax, have a cold one, get on with life.

You probably have enough time - although it sounds like you got a pretty
good deal - but you'll have trouble telling what happened in the very few
words allowed in the Feedback menu. I believe it's 80 characters - not
enough to tell much of a story.

Good luck with your $5 DVD drive - or is it a $70 DVD drive ;-)

Remember this? So, I stopped by the USPS today and asked them about the
package. I went into it expecting to take a few pictures proving that the
seller short paid the shipping or sent it to the wrong address. It was a
bit
different. Turns out he tried to ship it Media Mail to save some 's
on
shipping. As if $65 wasn't enough already Anyway, Media Mail is
subject

to inspection, and they inspected the package and sent it back (because it
wasn't media) to him to pay $2.19 extra for the shipping. That label for
$2.19 made my post office think it was short paid on shipping when
actually
that was the second payment made on the shipping. He tried to save money
on

shipping, was busted, and my package arrived over a week late. That is
shoddy!

Now, what is the time frame for leaving feedback? I'm gonna negative him
bad
on this and would rather him not have a chance to levae me feedback. Can
I

do this?
