In the event that anyone is looking for an update...
On a sunny but very cold morning, the well documented Golden-crowned Sparrow
continued to be active, seen at 11:30 am, 12-1-2014, in the cedar trees at the

I found a Black-bellied Plover on the beach on Minnesota Point (a.k.a. Park
Point) in Duluth today, July 28th. It was on the beach at the extreme end of
the point, just on the Minnesota side of the Wisconsin entry to the harbor.
The MOU web site suggests that they are not common during the
At 10:30 p.m. this evening I found the first-of-year Henslow's Sparrow singing
in Wild River State Park. I was getting a little concerned as this is 4 days
later than last year and last year was a very late arrival. I was finishing up
a Minnesota Frog and Toad Calling Survey route in the area
From time to time, I report on the over-wintering Wilson's Snipes in Wild
River State Park. Under somewhat challenging conditions, I checked Deer Creek
in WRSP this morning, March 17, 2014. My intent was to see if the birds
survived the Polar Vortex winter that we are just wrapping up. I was
My friend Joe Sausen found a Snowy Owl in Pine County today, March 8th. The
bird was located approximately 1.8 miles north of the Chisago/Pine County line
on Pine County Road 23 (Falcon Ave). Pine County 23 runs north and south,
parallel with and approximately one-half mile west of Interstate
We had a Red-shouldered Hawk visit our suet feeders today. We live along the
St. Croix River below Taylors Falls. This is good habitat for these hawks and
they do visit our open suet feeder in the winter from time to time. This one
was interested in suet (mostly) and a piece of beef kidney
I checked Deer Creek, in Wild River State Park, for Wilson's Snipes today and
found 6 over-wintering birds. Deer Creek is larger, longer, wider, and more
open habitat as compared to Spring Creek, which I reported on last Thursday.
It is spring-fed, shallow, a muddy bottom, and stays ice-free
With a break in the cold weather, Jenni Webster, Interpretive Naturalist,
Minnesota Interstate State Park, and I were able to conduct a methodical survey
of Spring Creek in Wild River State Park today. To our delight, we found 3
over-wintering Wilson's Snipes. Spring Creek is a short,
Last year we had a number of Wilson's Snipes over-winter in spring feed streams
in Wild River State Park. This morning on my way to volunteer in the Visitor
Center I stopped to check on snipes and within 30 seconds spotted a snipe in
the exact location along Spring Creek, in Wild River State
We had a Golden Eagle stop by this afternoon, to spend a few minutes soaring
over our home along the St. Croix River, about 3 miles downstream from Taylors
Falls, Chisago County, MN. There was an adult Bald Eagle using the same
thermals over the river bluffs. A mob of crows stopped by and
This morning, two Prothonotary Warbles made a welcomed visit to our yard here
along the St. Croix River just south of Taylors Falls, MN. They spent some
time foraging in multiple trees. They gave us some good looks and brightened
up an otherwise overcast morning.
Today's photos at:
Of the dozen or so Rose-breasted Grosbeaks that are hanging around our feeders,
one of the males has the color variation where the rose color is replaced by
a gold/yellow color. The literature indicates that this is uncommon, but it
happens. Google xanthochroism if you wish to get more
I found a first-of-year Henslow's Sparrow calling in Wild River State Park
today. This is 20 days later than the first bird last year. A little unusual
in that it was calling from on or near the ground. They are hard to find under
the best of conditions, but near the ground really ups the
In addition to the three Wilson's Snipes that I reported in Wild River State
Park on February 7th, today I found 7 additional snipes in the Park.
Deer Creek is another open-water, spring fed stream that flows into the St.
Croix River in Wild River State Park. Today, I snow-shoed the length
Three Wilson's Snipes have overwintered at Spring Creek in Wild River State
Park. I last photographed them at the end of November 2012 and then did not get
back to check on them until yesterday. Still in the exact same spot as back in
November. Apparently they did not get the memo about
Yesterday, Paulette spotted a single Pine Grosbeak at our feeders. The bird is
still with us today. Our home is in the old village of Franconia, on the St.
Croix River, in Chisago County, near Taylors Falls.
I have heard some reports of Pine Grosbeaks in Wild River State Park, however,
none
The Fox Sparrow that Linda Whyte mentioned in a post on Nov 30, 2012, continues
to be a regular visitor to the brush pile and the ground under the tube feeder
at the Wild River State Park Visitor Center. Good viewing out the large
Visitor Center windows. The bird looks good and has not
During a morning owl survey in Wild River State Park today, I heard a
first-of-year Henslow’s Sparrow calling in the Park. The bird was singing at
6:00 a.m. in the very frosty prairie (28 degrees). This is only 1 day early
from the earliest arrival over the previous 5 years that I have
I found a Northern Saw-whet Owl today in the woods by our home along the St.
Croix River. If you look at the photo, there is an unidentified food item on
the tree branch in front of the bird.
We had a saw-whet owl for the Christmas Bird Count, about 2-3 miles from the
bird today. Not sure if
I know this is not a native bird suitable for checklists, but a European
Goldfinch has been at our feeders today. Sure is a pretty bird!

Hi, All
The International Crane Foundation's annual crane count will be held at
5:30-7:30 AM, on Saturday, April 18,
this year. This is a multi-year, multi-state crane count that relies on
volunteers to count cranes by county.
In Chisago County, we are looking for volunteers to cover a couple
