[mou-net] FOY warblers
Hi All— Last spring’s migration was so miserable, I missed listing but a few warblers. In the last couple of days, Hopefully this lack of species was because last spring’s weather was so good that the migrants did not make landfall in Northfield. I have partially remedied this lack by banding a Chestnut-sided and a Blackburnian warbler—FOY birds for me this year. This situation is fairly pathetic, since both species are common in Minnesota. I have photos on my blog this morning; http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com Good birding! dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Waxwings and Bobolinks/Rice Co.
I don’t see waxwings and Bobolinks in the same flocks very often and certainly never thought they looked similar. But on Wednesday John Holden and I found just that sort of flock feeding off the perimeter fence of the Dennison sewage ponds—about a dozen waxwings and at least three Bobolinks. The birds appeared to be feeding on grasshoppers in the freshly cut grass. I did not see the bobolinks at first, as, at first glance, they appeared yellow-bellied, just like the waxwings and were about the same size too. Photos are on this morning’s blog: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com I also banded my first migrant of the fall yesterday—a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Eurasian Collared-Dove/Dakota Co.
Hi All— I guess it is not that rare to see collared-doves; John Holden and I found one last Wednesday about a mile west of the Whitetail Woods Regional Park on a telephone wire over 170th Street West. The bird was buffeted by high wind, and the sun lit the tail from behind, which made for a nice photo on my blog: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. Just a thought here. The kingbird being reported and photographed may well have been a caged bird. The tail feathers seem very worn, especially if it is a young bird. [mou-net] Hooded Warbler/Washington Co./Afton SP
Hi All— On Friday, Erika and I heard and eventually saw the Hooded Warbler that hangs out behind the visitor’s center at Afton State Park. I looked for it near the ground, which was a mistake—the bird sang from the mid-level of the forest. Despite poor light, the distance of the singer, and the bird’s being back-lit, I was able to take a photograph (although far from the greatest ever taken of the species). [mou-net] Android Apps and Vesper Sparrow water bathing
My recommendations are similar to Jeremy’s, except that I prefer the Sibley app. I use the Sibley Guide app often. It has looping sound tracts. It also has a variety of calls for each species. I no longer carry a bulky field guide into the field. If it is just sound you want, the tracts from the computer program, Thayer’s Birds of North America. It is great but expensive. The apps can be downloaded to your phone once you buy the program. Not as much variety within species, but the mp3 files seem to stop less often than those in the Sibley app. iBird Pro is good too, but I don’t use it much. BirdsEye is essential if you use eBird; and, of course, BirdLog if you are contributing to eBird. Hope this helps. Hi All— Yesterday, Gerald Hoekstra and I saw the Eurasian Tree Sparrow being reported near Hastings in Dakota Co. We both were able to take photographs, which are on my blog this morning: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com Conditions were not ideal for photography. I find digital photography difficult in extreme frigid weather—temperatures were -5 degrees, not counting the wind chill. Blue Jays bullied the House Sparrows and the Eurasian Tree Sparrow away from the feeders, so the birds only spent a few seconds at the feeders at any one time. As per the wishes of the home owners, we took photos from the street, so closeup shots were not possible. [mou-net] BirdsEye for Android released today
Hi All: The bird-finding app, BirdsEye, long inhabiting the Apple platform, is available for Android phones and tablets as of today. I am just letting you know, I get absolutely no financial benefit from sales; I did Beta test it for the developers. On your phone or tablet, go to this address at the Google Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birdseyebirding.birdseye This is basically a very slick app for finding birds you need for your various lists, but a few caveats are in order: 1. The app works in conjunction with eBird, so it really helps to have an eBird account. The app alerts you to birds in your vicinity that you lack, but which have been reported on eBird. 2. The app is “free.” BUT, in order to search for ALL the birds in your area (instead of the most common 50), you must invest in a monthly membership. This membership is cheap enough, only a couple of dollars—but the word “free” is a tad misleading. I recommend checking the app out. I am going to buy a membership for North American birds (other continents costs extra). This app is almost like a bird Geiger counter for birders. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. The bird allowed close approach, and I was able to get a nice series of photographs, three of which I posted on my blog: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com The hawk’s presence does explain the almost complete absence of birds at the feeder this summer… dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Bobolink behavior
Hi All-- Last week, Gene Bauer, Gerry Hoestra, and I found ourselves surrounded by Bobolinks in the Big Woods State Park restored prairie. I photographed numerous birds giving curious wing flutters--either territorial or aggressive behaviors (http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com). If you have not been to this prairie, it is worth visiting. It is on the southwest corner of the park. We also saw numerous Henslow's Sparrows and a few Sedge Wrens. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Yellow-throated Warblers and Henslow’s Sparrows— photos
Hi All— As promised in my recent note, I have posted my blog photos of a Yellow-throated Warbler that Erika and I saw at Whitewater State Park in Winona Co. on Saturday. Because the warbler kept high in the canopy, the photos are highly enlarged, but do show something of the bird's behavior. Also posted in yesterdays blog are photos of a kind of odd Henlow’s Sparrow from the Carleton College lower arboretum on Friday. The bird seems very white-breasted, but otherwise sports typical Henslow’s field marks. The bird also sang a Henslow’s song. [mou-net] Vega Gull? Dakota Co. 2011
Hi All— Karl Bardon et al. recently posted an excellent photo of a possible Vega Gull in Duluth on the “Recently Seen” MOU page: http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl. I believe a photo I took in January 2011 is also of a Vega Gull. This photo, for the record, is on my blog and shows both a dark-mantled possible Vega and a lighter Herring Gull. [mou-net] Black Scoter/Prescott
Hi All— I finally posted my photo of the Black Scoter seen from Point Douglas Park in Washington Co. last week. My photo, however, was taken just north of the center of Prescott, Wisconsin, across the river from Point Douglas. John Holden and I saw this bird on 27 November, which I think was slightly before other reports started appearing. My photo is not as stunning as the one posted on the MOU webpages by Larry Sirvio, but looks slightly different than his. Mine does not seem to have as much white on the forehead and my bird seems to have a bicolored bill—though this may be due to a muddy bill tip. It is also possible that there were more than one Black Scoter on the St. Croix. http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/ dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://sites.google.com/site/tallmanorum http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com http://picasaweb.google.com/danerika The White Album: Portraits of Minnesota Birdshttp://www.blurb.com/b/3992062-the-white-album-portraits-of-minnesota-birds-dan-t Two Years Among the Odonates http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3467428 the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. [mou-net] Cackling Geese/Rice Co.
Hi All— Erika and I had no trouble finding five Cackling Geese at Carleton College’s Lyman Lakes. We noted the report of these geese on Birdseye, the birding finding app for the iPhone or iPad. The birds apparently were first reported by Gerald Hoekstra to eBird. One photo I took for comparative purposes of a Cackling Goose and a Canada Goose also proved to be interesting due to the Canada’s white forehead. This pattern occasionally occurs in Canada/Cackling geese and is illustrated in Sibley. Erika and I are just back from the Big Woods State Park. We saw at least 8 and possibly a dozen Red-headed Woodpeckers around the main parking lot and across the county road by the headquarters. Re: [mou-net] Steele County shorebirds
Hi All— I was also at the plover fields north of Rice Lake State Park in Steele Co. today around 1 pm. I agree with Dave’s estimate of about 800 birds. I took photos which convey the sheer numbers present, although the birds did not approach me closely. The flocks took wing two times, once in response to a Northern Harrier, and once because of a Peregrine Falcon. I will post my plover photos on my blog tomorrow morning. dan On Sat, Sep 7, 2013 at 2:14 PM, Dave Bartkey greathornedd...@hotmail.comwrote: As Gerry and I returned to Faribault from Rice Lake State Park, we stopped again at the plover spot. While Gerry was taking pictures, I was attempting to get a count of the plovers. My final tally, which was very conservative, was of three groups. 307, 163 and 246 respectively. This totaled 716 birds! Like I said, this was a very conservative count and realistically there were probably over 800 plovers present! This morning on the way down, we stopped and had a few Buff-breasted Sandpipers. There was one flock which flew a little ways down that totaled between 10-12 birds. Also of note was a single Red-necked Phalarope and a Semipalmated Plover at the state park, along with large groups of migrating Common Nighthawks. Other shorebirds seen today included Stilt, Least, Semipalmated, Pectoral and Baird's Sandpipers as well as both yellowlegs, and two Wilson's Snipe. And of course, Killdeer. Good birding! [mou-net] eBird comments
Hi All— After I thought I had posted a map showing the location of a Lark Sparrow along the Cannon River Trail on a recent eBird list, Gerry Hoekstra said he could not see my map. It turns out that the comments section on an eBird list is only visible to the author of the list. The public can see comments under individual species, but not the section of comments for the whole list. So I moved my map so it appears in the Lark Sparrow comment box. http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S14315767 dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://sites.google.com/site/tallmanorum http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com http://picasaweb.google.com/danerika The White Album: Portraits of Minnesota Birdshttp://www.blurb.com/b/3992062-the-white-album-portraits-of-minnesota-birds-dan-t Two Years Among the Odonates http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3467428 the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. Today I saw a singing Lark Sparrow presumably on territory. I marked the exact spot with a yellow “thumbtack” on my eBird list: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S14315767 The location is on the Cannon River Bike Trail near Cannon Falls in Goodhue Co. [mou-net] junco recovery
Hi All— I have been meaning to report to you-all that, after banding some 600 juncos this spring, I have had one recovery. A bird I banded on 4 April 2013 near Northfield, Rice Co., was recovered 5 miles south of Park Rapids in Hubbard Co., Minnesota, on 6 May 2013. This recovery is not a spectacular distance, but same-season recoveries are always of interest. One of the odd aspects of modern America is that these days citizens are less prone to report banded birds than, say, in the 1920s or 30s. There are a few hypotheses for this downward trend—folks not wanting to cooperate with the government, kids inside all day playing video games…. dan -- Dan or Erika Tallman Northfield, Minnesota daner...@gmail.com http://sites.google.com/site/tallmanorum http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com http://picasaweb.google.com/danerika The White Album: Portraits of Minnesota Birdshttp://www.blurb.com/b/3992062-the-white-album-portraits-of-minnesota-birds-dan-t Two Years Among the Odonates http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/3467428 the best shod travel with wet feet...Beware of all enterprises that require new clothes ”—H. Hi All— Erika and I took a late afternoon stroll in the East Unit of the Cannon Valley Wilderness Area just south of Northfield, Rice Co. We saw 9 species of warblers, but what was interesting is that many fed on the ground. Ground feeders included restarts, Blackburnian and Black-throated Green warblers. We suspect this relatively unusual feeding stratum was due to the chilly temperatures (50s) and high winds (gusts up to 40 mph). Re: [mou-net] Finches
Matt et al.-- I do not recall ever recapturing a siskin or a redpoll in a subsequent year from banding. None of my redpolls were ever found elsewhere, although I am aware of a South Dakota-banded redpoll being recovered in Connecticut. I have had South Dakota siskins recaptured in California and Maryland. In South Dakota, I once caught someone else's goldfinch banded in southeastern Colorado. One of my Minnesota goldfinches was recovered in west-central Saskatchewan. I am pretty sure I have recovered goldfinches banded locally after a year, but I would have to check on that. dan On Sun, Mar 10, 2013 at 3:17 PM, Matt Dufort zeledo...@gmail.com wrote: I find these regional and local movements of finches fascinating. The hard part is that the tools we have to track those movements don't work well for these species. To figure out what they're really doing, we need to be able to follow individual birds, and that's nearly impossible for small, nomadic bids. Satellite transmitters are too big for most of the finches, and these new geolocators that are illuminating lots of bird movements require recapturing the birds to get the data. We could track them with radio transmitters, but those have limited range. Banding recoveries are probably our best bet, but they're rare enough that we don't get a very complete picture. So it may be a while before we get a thorough understanding of finch movements. Dan, did you ever recapture birds from previous years? I'm really curious how often birds come back to the same wintering areas. We know that many finches move around based on regional availability of food, to the point that there's an annual forecast of those movements for the northeast ( http://1birds.com/winter-finch-forecast-for-2012-2013.htm). I think this food-based nomadic movement is very true for siskins and redpolls, and might be true on a smaller scale for goldfinches. Several years ago, siskins completely disappeared from Washington state for close to a year. People started worrying that there had been a big die-off. Then, they reappeared as mysteriously as they'd gone, and I'm not sure if anyone knows where they went during that time. As a final note, there are a ton of bird species in Australia that wander around from season to season and year to year, depending on where water and food are available. There are a few groups of birds that we know do that in North America (owls, finches), but I wonder how much of it occurs with other species (diurnal raptors, for example). So much we still have to learn. Greater numbers of finches are in the treetops and may be coming to neighboring feeders. Redpolls have enjoyed my neighbor's feeder much more than mine. Nobody has interest in my thistle seed. I concluded that these winter finch cycles are random and unpredictable. Some winters I banded numbers of all three species.
