[mou-net] FOY warblers

2015-08-23 Thread danerika
Hi All—

Last spring’s migration was so miserable, I missed listing but a few
warblers. In the last couple of days, Hopefully this lack of species was
because last spring’s weather was so good that the migrants did not make
landfall in Northfield. I have partially remedied this lack by banding a
Chestnut-sided and a Blackburnian warbler—FOY birds for me this year. This
situation is fairly pathetic, since both species are common in Minnesota.
I have photos on my blog this morning;

[mou-net] Waxwings and Bobolinks/Rice Co.

2015-08-15 Thread danerika
I don’t see waxwings and Bobolinks in the same flocks very often and
certainly never thought they looked similar. But on Wednesday John Holden
and I found just that sort of flock feeding off the perimeter fence of the
Dennison sewage ponds—about a dozen waxwings and at least three Bobolinks.
The birds appeared to be feeding on grasshoppers in the freshly cut grass.
I did not see the bobolinks at first, as, at first glance, they appeared
yellow-bellied, just like the waxwings and were about the same size too.
Photos are on this morning’s blog: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com

I also banded my first migrant of the fall yesterday—a Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher.

Hi All—

I guess it is not that rare to see collared-doves; John Holden and I found
one last Wednesday about a mile west of the Whitetail Woods Regional Park

wind, and the sun lit the tail from behind, which made for a nice photo on

[mou-net] Kingbird thought

2015-06-27 Thread danerika
Just a thought here. The kingbird being reported and photographed may well
have been a caged bird. The tail feathers seem very worn, especially if it
is a young bird. It is possible that this bird was hand-reared and escaped
captivity.

Hi All—

On Friday, Erika and I heard and eventually saw the Hooded Warbler that
hangs out behind the visitor’s center at Afton State Park. I looked for it
near the ground, which was a mistake—the bird sang from the mid-level of

being back-lit, I was able to take a photograph (although far from the
greatest ever taken of the species). See my blog:

[mou-net] Android Apps and Vesper Sparrow water bathing

2015-05-31 Thread danerika
My recommendations are similar to Jeremy’s, except that I prefer the Sibley
app. I use the Sibley Guide app often. It has looping sound tracts. It also
has a variety of calls for each species. I no longer carry a bulky field
guide into the field.

If it is just sound you want, the tracts from the computer program,
Thayer’s Birds of North America. It is great but expensive. The apps can be
downloaded to your phone once you buy the program. Not as much variety
within species, but the mp3 files seem to stop less often than those in the
Sibley app.

iBird Pro is good too, but I don’t use it much.

BirdsEye is essential if you use eBird; and, of course, BirdLog if you are
contributing to eBird.

Hope this helps.

By the way, my blog this morning shows a series of photos of a Vesper
Sparrow water-bathing. (Apparently they usually dust-bathe.)

Hi All—

Yesterday, Gerald Hoekstra and I saw the Eurasian Tree Sparrow being
reported near Hastings in Dakota Co. We both were able to take
photographs, which are on my blog this morning:

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com

Conditions were not ideal for photography. I find digital photography
difficult in extreme frigid weather—temperatures were -5 degrees, not
counting the wind chill. Blue Jays bullied the House Sparrows and the
Eurasian Tree Sparrow away from the feeders, so the birds only spent a few
seconds at the feeders at any one time. As per the wishes of the home
owners, we took photos from the street, so closeup shots were not possible.

Nevertheless, Eurasian Tree Sparrow was a lifer for Gerry and new for my
North American list.

I was just looking at the Duluth Common Eider photos that Gerry Hoekstra

Looking at Sibley, I think the Duluth eiders may be from the western

more eastern group. I am no expert on races of Common Eiders, so would

[mou-net] BirdsEye for Android released today

2014-11-18 Thread danerika
Hi All:

The bird-finding app, BirdsEye, long inhabiting the Apple platform, is
available for Android phones and tablets as of today. I am just letting you
know, I get absolutely no financial benefit from sales; I did Beta test it
for the developers.

On your phone or tablet, go to this address at the Google Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birdseyebirding.birdseye

This is basically a very slick app for finding birds you need for your
various lists, but a few caveats are in order:

1. The app works in conjunction with eBird, so it really helps to have an
eBird account. The app alerts you to birds in your vicinity that you lack,
but which have been reported on eBird.

2. The app is “free.” BUT, in order to search for ALL the birds in your
area (instead of the most common 50), you must invest in a monthly
membership. This membership is cheap enough, only a couple of dollars—but
the word “free” is a tad misleading.

I recommend checking the app out. I am going to buy a membership for North
American birds (other continents costs extra). This app is almost like a
bird Geiger counter for birders.

On Wednesday morning, John Holden and I birded the 180th Street Marsh in

bird stood still at the edge, and slightly inside a corn field. Even when
John said Its right in front of us! I could not see it.

The bittern then walked out of the corn field and up to our car. I got out
of the car and the bird did not fly until I turned my back to it to return
to the car. I had not wanted to flush it, but, even so, the bittern only
flew the few yards back to the corn field.

[mou-net] Downy Woodpecker with deformed bill

2014-10-08 Thread danerika
Hi All—

A very late post here, but, last June, I banded a Downy Woodpecker with an
abnormally long bill. I finally got around to posting a photo on my blog.

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com

Yesterday I posted a review of the new National Geographic bird guide.
Just scroll down from the woodpecker post. Or here is a direct link:

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/2014/10/review-national-geographic-complete.html

Finally, the back woods has literally been swarming with warblers the last
four days. These birds have been mostly Yellow-rumped, Nashville, and
Tennessee Warblers. Not much else except for a few Orange-crowned Warblers
and Blue-headed Vireos. I have banded almost 100 of them.

[mou-net] Cooper's Hawks

2014-08-18 Thread danerika
Hi All--

Erika and I have seen more Cooper's Hawks than usual this summer. Recent
sightings include two widely separated birds last Friday along the bike
trail along the Minnehaha Creek bike trail between Lake Nakomis and Lake
Harriet in Minneapolis.

On Saturday we found a large female Cooper's Hawk at the U of M Landscape
Arboretum in Carver Co. I posted photos of that bird on my blog this
morning (http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com). *Birds of North America*
reports increases of this hawk in Michigan and Wisconsin of 10 percent or
more in recent Breeding Bird Surveys.

[mou-net] Bobolink behavior

2014-07-07 Thread danerika
Hi All--

Last week, Gene Bauer, Gerry Hoestra, and I found ourselves surrounded by
Bobolinks in the Big Woods State Park restored prairie. I photographed
numerous birds giving curious wing flutters--either territorial or
aggressive behaviors (http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com).

If you have not been to this prairie, it is worth visiting. It is on the
southwest corner of the park. We also saw numerous Henslow's Sparrows and a
few Sedge Wrens.

[mou-net] Yellow-throated Warblers and Henslow’s Sparrows— photos

2014-06-24 Thread danerika
Hi All—

As promised in my recent note, I have posted my blog photos of a
Yellow-throated Warbler that Erika and I saw at Whitewater State Park in
Winona Co. on Saturday. Because the warbler kept high in the canopy, the
photos are highly enlarged, but do show something of the bird's behavior.

Also posted in yesterdays blog are photos of a kind of odd Henlow’s Sparrow
from the Carleton College lower arboretum on Friday. The bird seems very
white-breasted, but otherwise sports typical Henslow’s field marks. The
bird also sang a Henslow’s song.

[mou-net] American Black Duck/Rice County

2014-02-04 Thread danerika
Hi All--

Most of the winter, various eBirders have reported an American Black Duck
in and around Northfield, Rice Co. Having errands in Northfield, I finally
got around the checking yesterday (3 February 2014). Among 350 Mallards in
the small (75 yard) patch of open water in the Cannon River along downtown
Northfield, I had no problem finding the Black Duck.

I have photos on my blog:

[mou-net] Snowy Owl yawning

2014-01-31 Thread danerika
Hi All--

John Holden and I found a Snowy Owl on a pole east of Vermillion on 180th
street on Wednesday morning. The bird appeared to be sound asleep. Twice it
yawned though perhaps this was a behavior preceding regurgitating a
pellet--we were not sure which (we never saw a pellet). We made an effort
not to disturb the owl and never flushed the bird. Nevertheless, here are
some striking photos--

Hi All—

Karl Bardon et al. recently posted an excellent photo of a possible Vega
Gull in Duluth on the “Recently Seen” MOU page:

I believe a photo I took in January 2011 is also of a Vega Gull. This
photo, for the record, is on my blog and shows both a dark-mantled possible

the Vega as a Slaty-backed Gull, but neither species landed on my lifelist.

[mou-net] Black Scoter/Prescott

2013-12-04 Thread danerika
Hi All—

I finally posted my photo of the Black Scoter seen from Point Douglas Park
in Washington Co. last week. My photo, however, was taken just north of
the center of Prescott, Wisconsin, across the river from Point Douglas.
John Holden and I saw this bird on 27 November, which I think was slightly
before other reports started appearing.

My photo is not as stunning as the one posted on the MOU webpages by Larry
Sirvio, but looks slightly different than his. Mine does not seem to have
as much white on the forehead and my bird seems to have a bicolored
bill—though this may be due to a muddy bill tip. It is also possible that
there were more than one Black Scoter on the St. Croix.

Erika and I had no trouble finding five Cackling Geese at Carleton

reported by Gerald Hoekstra to eBird.

One photo I took for comparative purposes of a Cackling Goose and a Canada

This pattern occasionally occurs in Canada/Cackling geese and is
illustrated in Sibley. The photo is posted on my blog this morning:

2013-09-07 Thread danerika
Hi All—

I was also at the plover fields north of Rice Lake State Park in Steele Co.
today around 1 pm. I agree with Dave’s estimate of about 800 birds. I
took photos which convey the sheer numbers present, although the birds did
not approach me closely. The flocks took wing two times, once in response
to a Northern Harrier, and once because of a Peregrine Falcon.

I will post my plover photos on my blog tomorrow morning.

As Gerry and I returned to Faribault from Rice Lake State Park, we stopped

Like I said, this was a very conservative count and realistically there
were probably over 800 plovers present! This morning on the way down, we
stopped and had a few Buff-breasted Sandpipers. There was one flock which
flew a little ways down that totaled between 10-12 birds.

Also of note was a single Red-necked Phalarope and a Semipalmated Plover
at the state park, along with large groups of migrating Common Nighthawks.
Other shorebirds seen today included Stilt, Least, Semipalmated, Pectoral
and Baird's Sandpipers as well as both yellowlegs, and two Wilson's Snipe.
 And of course, Killdeer.

 Good birding!

[mou-net] first migrants/ Rice Co.

2013-08-26 Thread danerika
Hi All—

After an excruciatingly slow August (6 birds banded, 4 of which were
chickadees), today I banded the first migrants of the fall:

American Redstart (maybe a local, but not banded all summer)
Wilson’s Warbler
Northern Waterthrush

I will try to post a photo of the waterthrush on my blog in the next few
days.

[mou-net] Bathing Banded (?) R-t Hummingbird/Washington Co,.

2013-08-01 Thread danerika
Hi All—

On my blog this noon I posted photos of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird bathing
at Funky Gardens nursery in Washington Co. (just north of William O’Brian
State Park. In the last of three photos, the bird appears to be banded.
Does anyone know of a researcher banding hummingbirds in the area? (Most
banders do not band hummingbirds, as doing so requires special permits and
bands.)

[mou-net] Warbler mp3 files

2013-07-13 Thread danerika
Hi All—

The Cornell Ornithology Lab has just come out with warbler call and song
mp3. files to accompany the new book, “The Warbler Guide.” I have reviewed
the files in my blog:

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com/

This is a great way to learn warbler songs.

I have monetary ties with Cornell or Princeton University Press. I just
thought you might be interested in this amazingly inexpensive tool.

 Hi everyone,
My friend Jerry Bonkoski found a Bell's Vireo last Friday while doing a
bird survey, west of Nerstrand Big Woods State Park in Rice County. Some
local birders and myself saw and heard the bird today, and some saw two
birds, indicating breeding. The location is at the NW corner of the
intersection of Hall Ave. and CR 29, west of the state park.

Bell's Vireo has been reported in this county the last three years in a
row at least, by someone who refuses to share their sightings. So I'm very
happy to be able to share this with all of you! Enjoy!

 Good birding!

[mou-net] eBird comments

2013-06-05 Thread danerika
Hi All—

After I thought I had posted a map showing the location of a Lark Sparrow
along the Cannon River Trail on a recent eBird list, Gerry Hoekstra said he
could not see my map.

It turns out that the comments section on an eBird list is only visible to
the author of the list. The public can see comments under individual
species, but not the section of comments for the whole list.

So I moved my map so it appears in the Lark Sparrow comment box.

Today I saw a singing Lark Sparrow presumably on territory. I marked the
exact spot with a yellow “thumbtack” on my eBird list:

The location is on the Cannon River Bike Trail near Cannon Falls in Goodhue

from near the top of a large tree.

[mou-net] junco recovery

2013-05-28 Thread danerika
Hi All—

I have been meaning to report to you-all that, after banding some 600
juncos this spring, I have had one recovery. A bird I banded on 4 April
2013 near Northfield, Rice Co., was recovered 5 miles south of Park Rapids
in Hubbard Co., Minnesota, on 6 May 2013. This recovery is not a
spectacular distance, but same-season recoveries are always of interest.

One of the odd aspects of modern America is that these days citizens are
less prone to report banded birds than, say, in the 1920s or 30s. There
are a few hypotheses for this downward trend—folks not wanting to cooperate
with the government, kids inside all day playing video games….

Hi All—

On 21 May I recaptured a Pileated Woodpecker in Northfield that I
originally banded on 3 November 2010. Since I band relatively few
Pileateds, I wondered if a three-year-old Pileated is among the oldest on
record, but it turns out to be a far cry from a 12-year-old Maryland bird.
A photo of a remarkably angry Pileated Woodpecker is on my blog.

[mou-net] Grounded Warblers/Rice Co.

2013-05-12 Thread danerika
Hi All—

Erika and I took a late afternoon stroll in the East Unit of the Cannon
Valley Wilderness Area just south of Northfield, Rice Co. We saw 9 species
of warblers, but what was interesting is that many fed on the ground.
Ground feeders included restarts, Blackburnian and Black-throated Green
warblers. We suspect this relatively unusual feeding stratum was due to the
chilly temperatures (50s) and high winds (gusts up to 40 mph). Photos are
on my blog: http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com

4 Orange-crowned Warblers
1 Black-and-White Warbler (+2 others observed)
1 Golden-winged Warbler (photo at http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com )
1 Black-throated Green Warbler (observed, not banded)\
1 Blue-headed Vireo (observed, not banded)

[mou-net] Song Sparrow banding recovery and Orange-crowned’s crown

2013-05-03 Thread danerika
Hi All—

Today (3 May) I recaptured a Song Sparrow near Dundas (Rice Co.) that I
originally banded on 8 April 2010. As Song Sparrows are a relatively
recent arrival at the banding station, this late date indicates the foul
weather has delayed their spring migration this year.

On my blog, I have belatedly posted an photo of an Orange-crowned Warbler’s
crown and muse about its current scientific name. (

[mou-net] Dark-eyed Junco at Suet Feeder/Rice Col

2013-04-25 Thread danerika
Hi All—

I posted a photo of a Dark-eyed Junco at our suet feeder in Northfield
during Monday’s ice and snow storm. To the best of my knowledge, juncos
are not known to consume suet.

http://dantallmansbirdblog.blogspot.com

This junco seems to be intermediate between a “Slate-colored” and an
“Oregon” Junco.

[mou-net] Brown Creeper banding recovery

2013-04-06 Thread danerika
Hi All—

Today the back woods has been full of juncos, Golden-crowned Kinglets,
Hermit Thrushes, and a few phoebes. One of the creepers I caught was
originally banded on 6 October 2012. I do not know if this is a returning
migrant or a wintering bird.

Re: [mou-net] Finches

2013-03-10 Thread danerika
Matt et al.--

I do not recall ever recapturing a siskin or a redpoll in a subsequent year
from banding. None of my redpolls were ever found elsewhere, although I am
aware of a South Dakota-banded redpoll being recovered in Connecticut. I
have had South Dakota siskins recaptured in California and Maryland.

In South Dakota, I once caught someone else's goldfinch banded in
southeastern Colorado. One of my Minnesota goldfinches was recovered in
west-central Saskatchewan. I am pretty sure I have recovered goldfinches
banded locally after a year, but I would have to check on that.

I find these regional and local movements of finches fascinating. The hard
part is that the tools we have to track those movements don't work well for
these species. To figure out what they're really doing, we need to be able
to follow individual birds, and that's nearly impossible for small, nomadic
bids. Satellite transmitters are too big for most of the finches, and these
new geolocators that are illuminating lots of bird movements require
recapturing the birds to get the data. We could track them with radio
transmitters, but those have limited range. Banding recoveries are probably
our best bet, but they're rare enough that we don't get a very complete
picture. So it may be a while before we get a thorough understanding of
 finch movements.

Dan, did you ever recapture birds from previous years? I'm really curious
how often birds come back to the same wintering areas.

We know that many finches move around based on regional availability of
food, to the point that there's an annual forecast of those movements for
 the northeast (
 http://1birds.com/winter-finch-forecast-for-2012-2013.htm).
I think this food-based nomadic movement is very true for siskins and
redpolls, and might be true on a smaller scale for goldfinches. Several
years ago, siskins completely disappeared from Washington state for close
to a year. People started worrying that there had been a big die-off. Then,
they reappeared as mysteriously as they'd gone, and I'm not sure if anyone
knows where they went during that time.

As a final note, there are a ton of bird species in Australia that wander
around from season to season and year to year, depending on where water and
food are available. There are a few groups of birds that we know do that in
North America (owls, finches), but I wonder how much of it occurs with
other species (diurnal raptors, for example).

So much we still have to learn.
