If you've got that voltage AC coming out of the stator and a good battery,
you just need to pin down where you're losing voltage between the two. I
read you bought Caltric. I've been told to avoid Caltric products at all
costs. Did you test your R/R? It's a big diode. It should have roughly the
HI Dave and thank you for responding to my cry for help. I have given
readings in previous post for ac current coming from ac generator (stator)
and dc current at battery at given rpms. You won't see dc power until
rectifier does its magic and changes the wave patterns

Sorry, you're right. I don't have the thread in my e-mail so this might be
a repeat . Have you tried using a charger to charge the battery? It might
be a bad cell.

I've got 2 good batteries hete I've been using in this bike and my 650

Thanks for replying Lar. When I got the bike (cb700s ) it wasn't running .

I had found it seamed to run great, but it wasn't charging. When I started

Hi Darin
My 83 650 is field coil.

Thank you Big E (grider) will do those tests tomorrow afternoon as I have
thrown in the towel for the evening. 330 am comes pretty quick no matter
how fast you sleep. You here in the states? I'm in ohio, proud buckeye

Ok. Just got home and ran bike again. Stator results: with voltmeter set on
ac, black lead to ground and red to each yellow wire individually I got
about 6.5 v.ac from each at idle (about1500rpm). Put voltmeter on dc to
check voltage at battery got 12.5 v.dc at 5k rpm. These were done with

I'm out of suggestions. Hope it's not the stator.

Replaced stator and reg/rectifier when I got it running and found the no

Hi Darin
You replaced the stator...from where, was it from Honda or an off brand? I
have an 83 650 and at 2500 rpm the system will show 14.5 volts, anything
from 14v to 15v is good. I know when my stator was slowly burning out the
voltage was dropping. Any of these tests on the system should
Nothing on the bike is AC (as far as I know), set to DC and take the
readings again.

With the same battery put in my gl650i silverwing, dc volts show 14+ at
idle. Factory service manual calls for same batteries

Not much help now but for anyone in the future. When my gf lost her bike
key I took the gas tank off (3 bolts) and took it to a locksmith. Same key
for ignition as the tank lock and I believe there was a number under the
cap that the locksmith used to find the blank key.

Is your 83 a permanent magnet charging system or field coil type? I think I
am not getting enough voltage to field coil. That is what I am trying to
find out is what the voltage should be on black wire and white wire between
reg/rectifier and stator? Thank you for YOUR time for MY problem. Thing
How many volts AC are you getting out of the three wires coming out of the
stator?

I will test again this afternoon and post results. I have checked and
didn't seem to be putting out much. Seems like I'm not getting enough
voltage to field coil . Black wire from ignition to reg/rectifier was
losing about 1 volt between battery and reg/rectifier. Will post more after
work. Thank
I usually think in the direction stator -> battery, not the other way
around. The current starts at the stator and travels to the battery for
storage. I am currently waiting for a new R/R I ordered (a MOSFET R/R), and
when it arrives, I plan to do what is known as a "hotwire mod." This means
My other bikes are permanent magnet type charging systems. First time
dealing with field coil type

Always did like the Pacific Coast bikes. From what I've read, the stator
won't put out without having 12volts to activate field coil

Interesting. I don't personally know what a field coil is, but on the PC
and Goldwing (at least, maybe others) you just start the bike, turn the VOM
to AC, and read the output off the 3 wires. I believe each should be around
6 volts AC. This then goes to the R/R, which changes it to DC and
