Well not a gyr but Kyle Bardwell and I had good looks at the Barnacle goose at
Larchmont Reservoir about 8:30 am today and just a bit west off Weaver street
at Quaker Ridge school (from same flock of Canadas as had been on reservoir)
was a beautiful cackling goose. To complete the scene we did
this inane exercise

Back to birds at Bryant Park 8:30 to 8:50 a.m. this morning: had one of the
woodcocks near maintenance shed south side (40th street), also a hermit thrush
and on the lawn a palm warbler (FOS).

A too brief walk on a beautiful morning yielded two meadowlarks on the main
landfill; sun hitting their yellow breast during telltale flight.
Great horned owls have again bred successfully in the park

Although the Park has apparently been sold today by Bloomberg for a private
T-Mobile event (Shikira concert) and the lawn and most of walkways were
completely inaccessible, I was in early and birded the fringes for 30 minutes
by maintenance area (40th St on 5th Ave side) and in front of the
CPP main landfill very active w sparrows yesterday. Literally dozens of
Savannah's and Song. One vesper, great looks. At least 8-10 swamp. Off the
landfill one field; many chipping around, 6 junco, others had a Lincoln's.
Warblers limited to large numbers of yellow rumped; several palm and a
and eastern meadowlark and
flock of grackles on landfill -- vesper again wide open I believe there's more
than one; other additions from yesterday were one each of winter wren and
peregrine.

I understand that the first official day of the CBC Count Period was Saturday
December 14 and the last day is Sunday January 5, 2014. Thus, for counts on
Saturday 12/14, the count week period is 12/14-12/20 and for 12/15 the count
week is also 12/14 -12/20 (not 12/12-12/18) hence the Gyr e.g.
Warm day, glad I took the bins to work. Varied thrush seen well 330-345 -- took
about an hour. Found with +/- 10 robins and some juncos, mourning doves and
white throats. A number of people got to see it. other notable birds for my
first birding excursion to Stuyvesant were ovenbird (seems
Charlie Roberto, Kyle Bardwell and I travelled to black dirt region today.
Highlight was 12 Rough legged hawks on rte 94, Indiana road and at oil city
road (pine island) 9 of which were light-phased) also 5 kestrel, 3 harrier,
lots and lots of horned lark (missed on buntings and longspurs),

Beautiful calm morning ducks on the move. In cove left (west) of swimming beach
60+/- ring necked ducks, 13 GW teal, 6 gr. scaup, 4 comm. golden eye, mallards
and buffleheads. Along river itself walking south along the sea wall 30+/-
comm. golden eye, some more ring neck, and tucked in cove 21
to the crow shoot comments anything that has not

Having to attend an all day conference on Pine Street (downtown) ugh -- I spent
45 minutes in battery park this am --- essentially a construction site at

With a fantastic lineup and fantastic weather for the Clearwater Festival I

The Basha Kill (also Sullivan) has had a nesting pair in the past (not been
there this year) sometimes visible from canoe/kayak put in.

7 a.m. drinking my coffee on the bench at swimming beach looking at a lone
bobbing spotted sandpiper (still a lot of spots), when I notice another
unidentified shorebird crossing the bay. Two falcons appear out of nowhere
chasing it unsuccessfully. On the way back and over land the smaller one
6 tonight over porch at 715 pm. my first of season. Still sitting out hoping
for another round. With work slow was able leave office early and spent about
an hour in Central Park bw 330-430 pm. Best by far was a very cooperative worm
eating warbler in Evodia field. Several folks got on it and
3 at 620 pm then a lone bird at 655. Not sure how many missed as I was in and
out of house.

For you sparrow folks the Point was active this afternoon. Besides the landfill
only a portion of which I walked, other productive areas by were grass by
(never used) swimming pool, the grassy knoll (b/w the gazebo and the road to
the nature center) and the low road w the wine cellars:
The rain over the last few days left some puddles in the park including up by
the airplane field. Charlie Roberto passes on he had an excellent Westchester
find of pectoral sandpiper in one of them about 9:00 this am. Also seen in
grass in the area of air field were single vesper and Lincoln's
I was listening on the car radio to Bob Dylan's 14 minute dirge on the Titanic
from his most recent record Tempest, parked and walked into the Black Cow
Coffee Co. for my morning caffeine, saw the NY Times election headline, left
the shop and there were (at least) 49 Turkey Vultures circling
The river has some waterfowl accumulating. From the Mariandale - Dominican
Sisters property visible were large rafts of bufflehead, ruddy duck, coot and

Highlights from Saturday's 12/20/2014 Peekskill CBC included:
High counts of bald eagle (34) pileated WP (19), American pipit (41 all at
croton point), and both eastern bluebird and common raven (can't recall the
#s); also of note were singles of eastern phoebe (very unusual for this count),
Cassin's in Brooklyn; Couch's in Manhattan. Seems like Flatbush Ave is Kingbird

Today is Teatown Eagle Fest headquartered at croton point park. Tents and
spotters also at croton train station boat ramp, George's island (Montrose),
Verplank pier, croton dam. 8 am -- 39 eagles at George's island. (25 at 9 am).
On ice floes and perched. Other birds seen this morning mostly
There were well in excess of 100 bald eagles seen during eagle fest yesterday
between Tarrytown and Peekskill. High hourly counts were 39 at George's Island
8 a.m. and 51 at Verplank pier at 10 am including 20 on an ice floe. Other
birds seen during festival were: croton train boat ramp/ croton
There were many common redpolls in mixed flock of goldfinch and siskins
yesterday even feeding on ground w juncos and WT sparrows. Sporadic reports
over the last week so they are likely hanging around. Best spot seems to be in
trees just at the left turn off, from the paved road (past the RVs)
I stopped by George's island Sunday 4 pm for first time this season (I spend
all day there for Eagle Fest -- this year it's Saturday 2/7) and there were ten
eagles perched. No ice at GI but there is river ice around the bend at Verplank
pier, also at Charles Point and up to ansville circle
My yard in Ossining had one surprise today a single common grackle. It didn't
feel like spring. Also nice were hairy WP, song sparrow, a robin and my first
pine siskins (5) of the season

At least 100 mixed blackbirds have been dropping into the feeders today mostly
red wings -almost all males - some grackles and cowbirds. Also siskins continue
at thistle; count was 11 today. 52 degrees tomorrow.

A few Westchester stops held some good birds on Sunday. At Edith Read Scaup

the park, not as many and not quite as open hooded warblers but great looks, a

Thanks for all the updates not that I'm likely to get up there today but the

At croton point this warm spring morning (yeah) first swamp sparrow also
several gc kinglets, phoebe, one kingfisher many wood ducks, Scaup on river
side, one of baby GH owlets getting big (I have seen two and heard there are
three), 3 kestrel, 2 savannah sparrow, a few BE around, and
I photographed what I am quite sure is a female boat tailed grackle feeding in
the mowed mugwort on left (east) side of landfill around 230 pm. loosely
affiliating w robins-no other blackbirds on ground. It was there for quite a
while. My only hesitancy is that there are no reports of boat
