[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Long Island West End CUSA update..

2023-05-26 Thread Andrew Baksh
I am passing on a report from Darlene McNeil who reported the continuing Curlew Sandpiper minutes ago. See her pin here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/9Fky3TWREDMdr8cHA?g_st=icFor those of you thinking of twitching. Please be aware that there has been a situation where some birders were denied entry to West End this morning. Apparently, the person manning the toll booth indicated that a fishing pass was required. A few of us have taken up the charge to get this sorted out. As it was reported that even Empire Pass holders were being denied entry.Darlene, shared that she got around the mess by quickly getting a fishing license - see link - (https://decals.east.licensing.app/ ). Returned to the site with a fishing pole in tow and was able to gain entry. The latest in this sorry state of affairs is that I got NY State Parks to publicly state on Twitter (https://twitter.com/nystateparks/status/1662113576436355072?s=46&t=yCd8zvCt5vAwEYLwhkC5ww ) that they are looking into the issue and will update me with a status as soon as the LI regional office provides an explanation. Hopefully, it is sorted out in our favor soon.Cheers,“Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves could free our mind.” ~ Bob Marley“Tenderness and Kindness are not signs of weakness and despair but manifestations of strength and resolution” ~ Khalil Gibran"I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence." ~ Frederick Douglass風 Swift as the wind林 Quiet as the forest火 Conquer like the fire山 Steady as the mountainSun Tzu  The Art of War(\__/)(= '.'=)                                            (") _ (")                                     Sent from somewhere in the field using my mobile device! Andrew Bakshwww.birdingdude.blogspot.com

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Dovekies

2021-01-16 Thread akmirth
We saw a total of nine Dovekies from the West End jetty at Jones Beach today
between 2:00 and 2:30. All were flying in the direction from the channel
towards the ocean or to Point Lookout. Two landed close to the jetty providing
pretty neat views.

Thank you for your persistence.
I haven’t been down there in a while, but it’s good to know I can.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End now open for bird watching

2020-08-12 Thread Lisa Wollerstein

I’ve been emailing back and forth with George Gorman, Regional Director of NYS
Parks, and Jeffrey Mason, Park Director of Jones Beach regarding the confusion
on whether or not we are permitted to bird at West End.

West End is now authorized for birdwatching. You must show binoculars at the
toll booth and stay out of any restricted areas.

Attached is a copy of his email If you have any issues.

Happy migration!

Lisa Wollerstein.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Gannets, Piping Plovers, etc

2020-04-12 Thread Joseph Wallace
A ten-minute stationary count just east of Parking Area 6 resulted in a
tally of at least 250 gannets, all flying (singly and in groups up to about
20) east to west with the brisk wind. During a nearly two-hour walk after
this, gannets streamed by the whole time, though in diminishing numbers.
Other sightings included a pair each of Piping Plovers and American
Oystercatchers on the (nearly deserted) beach that heads east from the lot,
and three (late?) Long-tailed Ducks just offshore. --Joe Wallace

2020-03-18 Thread Steven Schellenger
The flatten area by the fisherman's road was use of sand for the
construction of the new nature and energy building being built at West End
2. At the present time there are no plans for turbine support building at
Jones Beach State Park.

The sand that was dug out from the site by the coast guard station was used
in construction of the new education center. I learned that it always was
the intention to remove that sand, but I agree, the parks did a very poor
job at communicating to the public.

There are no plans to run the offshore cable or any support structures
through Jones Beach. Parks is well aware there would be massive opposition.

They are not using the building for a drive through, they have set up tents
in the lot. I am sure if you Google search it, you will see what has been
set up.

How? You drive into the parking lot to the test station, get tested leave and
the parking lot. It’s a drive through like McDonalds or Dairy Barn.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Painted Bunting, Dec31 end of year

2019-12-31 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) arrived at the Gatsby Playground site as a group
of birders was leaving. They told us where the PAINTED BUNTING was and we soon
found it. It fed while we watched, but within the reeds making pictures always
obscured by branches and stems. No problem, we’re birders not photographers.

Next stops, field #6, but no Iceland Gull nor a Black-headed Gull at Jones
Island bar where we stopped. The road leaving the West End #2 lot, overlooked a
field surrounded on one side by photographers, lots of them. We looked where
they were looking and saw the SNOWY OWL that has been hanging out there. It
was resting on the ground. (There is no need to hide its location. The world
was there all taking pictures).

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Clay-colored, Blue Grosbeak

2019-10-15 Thread Steve Walter
There was a Clay-colored Sparrow at Jones Beach today, around the hedgerows
near the Coast Guard station. It sounds like it may have been seen Monday,
as well, but doesn't seem to be seen for long. Fortunately, I took long
range pictures - which, at least, don't take off before the ID can be
verified. I think Ed Becher was one of the previous observers. He was
definitely one of the observers today - being the one that spotted it - of a
young / female type Blue Grosbeak on the south side of the entrance road to
the parking lot.

Birds of note on the sand spit were a juvenile Caspian Tern and its parent,
as well as at least three continuing Marbled Godwits.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach: Marbled Godwits, Gull-billed Tern, Empi

2019-09-27 Thread Steve Walter
There are now 4 Marbled Godwits in the Jones Beach area. They were embedded
in the large Oystercatcher roost, which this morning was on the outer part
of the sand spit near the Coast Guard station. All left about half way down
on the falling tide.

One reason for going there today was to hopefully catch up with the
lingering Gull-billed Tern. As late is it now is for one to be around, I
suspected (and actually had seen a distant photo of it) that it would be in
a plumage that I didn't have. After a previous trip in which I only saw it
as a fly by, I succeeded in getting pictures today. It looks to me to be a
molting adult, not all the way into winter plumage. If I'm wrong, my tern
guru will let me know. I posted a picture at my web site
(http://stevewalternature.com/ ).

I also posted pictures of an Empidonax flycatcher (one of the very few
migrants that I came across). Sadly, after many years of birding, I can't
say that I've mastered expertise in these guys (and I don't have an Empi
guru). When I looked at the pictures, I got the impression of a buffy wash
on the belly. But surely, that must be yellow? As in Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher? But it doesn't strike me as that, and it is kind of late.
Acadian? Gotta study up on primary projections.

RE: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Brown Pelican (Yesterday's)

2019-08-09 Thread Steve Walter
I guess the Brown Pelican is long gone. All that remain are memories and
pictures. If anyone is interested, I uploaded a couple of yesterday’s pix to my
web site (which was in need of an update) -- http://stevewalternature.com/ .
The pelican did get a lot closer for later visitors.

As noted by Doug F. on another forum, the three Common Loons in the Jones Beach
boat basin are interesting to look at – different than typically seen around
here. So I did make a point of photographing them, as I did of the equally
cooperative Black Scoters and Common Eider. Yea, a typical August day at Jones
Beach.

Throw in two Royal Terns that flew in and flew out.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach area

2019-03-09 Thread Andrew Block
After taking a friend to the airport I decided to take a quick look in the
Jones Beach area for stuff.  Not a lot around.  Had an adult Lesser
Black-backed Gull, 6 Black Scoters, and 4 Pintails at the coast guard station.
At Pt. Lookout there were many Red-throated Loons.  Other than that not much
around.  At Cammans Pond I had 3 Black-crowned Night-Herons, several shovelers,
and two hoodies.  At Merrick Rd. Park I had a large colony of 10 Monk Parakeet
nests with more than 25+ birds present at the time.  I had never noticed those
there before.  I also hadn't realized how much had changed since Sandy in this
area.  I hadn't been down here since before then.

2018-12-11 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) viewed the bar and inlet. The bar contained the 3
gull species, 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and a few DUNLIN. In the water were all
three SCOTERS SPECIES, a dozen COMMON EIDER, 75 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, 2
BUFFLEHEAD and a HORNED GREBE. Nice to see the winter ducks close to the car on
a freezing, but lovely morning.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2018-11-20 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (SY Schiff) flushed a SRARP-SHINNED HAWK as we entered the
road into the parking lot. We checked out the bar at the Coast Guard marina on
a dreary, overcast morning. Lots of birds until a PEREGRINE FALCON made a pass
and they all flew off. Three MARBLED GODWIT continue. Others included
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, DUNLIN, SANDERLING, 7 RED KNOT and a pair of 3rd or 4th
year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Lots of DOUBLE-CREASTED CORMORANT but no
Oystercatchers.

Driving over to West End #2, we walked down to the ocean. On the beach we found
another pair (or maybe the same ones from the bar) LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
They were disrupted by the same or another PEREGRINE FALCON. It flew by us and
landed close by on some debris on the upper beach. Great photo op. The water
was full of BLACK and SURF plus 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. A steady stream of
NORTHER GANNETS and gulls moved through from east to west along with numerous
gulls. The gulls included a few LAUGHING GULLS.

Returning to the car, a group of 3 dozen SNOW BUNTINGS flew over the swale and
over our heads in the parking lot. Also a pair of NORTHERN HARRIERS were
cruising over the dunes. Nice end to the birding day

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach and Pt; Lookout

2018-11-07 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) found the bar at the marina covered with
shorebirds. They included AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
DUNLIN, several RED KNOT, and 2 RUDDY TURNSTONE. Several FORSTER’S TERN flew
over the bar. In the inlet were 3 COMMON EIDER, SURF SCOTER and a RED-THROATED
LOON.

As we walked down the swale 3 HORNED LARK flew up’ On the beach were 5
SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and 2 very late PIPING PLOVER. A NORTHERN HARRIER flew over
the dunes. The parking lot held 7 LESSER BLACK-BACK GULLS.

At Pt. Lookout we walked through the new memorial and to the beach. There in
the surf to our left were 2 HARLEQUIN, another on the west side of the jetty,
an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER on the jetty and a COMMON EIDER in the water. Breezy

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach and Hecksher SP

2018-10-28 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I(Sy Schiff) started at Jones Beach West End #2 and found the
LARK SPARROW on the grass at the mid lot exit. On the east side of the
building to the south we found the reported VESPER SPARROW. Sparrows were
abundant this morning along the road edges with WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS in
greatest numbers. Down on the ocean, the sky was filled with first year HERRING
GULLS, but little else. Some SCOTERS were flying W to E but well off shore. On
the beach was a single LAUGHING GULL plus the usual three and a huge flock of
DUNLIN. Several HORNED LARKS were feeding in the swale.

We went over to the marina. The bar and most of the island was under water. A
flock of some 200 AMEERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS took off as we watched and included
2 MARBLED GODWIT. A pair of ROYAL TERNS were on the breakwater by the Coast
Guard Station.

A text message alerted Joe and we drove via the Ocean Pkwy to Hecksher to find
about 25-30 birders looking at the NORTHERN WHEATEAR. We were greeted by a
round of hellos followed by a quick point to nearby scopes all set up on the
bird. Birders are a great bunch.

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach West End

2018-10-23 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) started at the Coast Guard hedgerow looking for
sparrows. Birds to look at but only WHITE-THROATED, WHITE-CROWNED and SONG. A
MARBLED GODWIT continues on the bar with a hundred AMEERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS;
BLACK and SURF SCOTERS are still in the water.

We drove over to the east exit of West End #2 lot and found the 2 VESPER
SPARROWS reported. On the beach were 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. NORTHERN
GANNETS were plunging into the water, always a great thing to watch.

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS are everywhere and a steady stream of TREE SWALLOWS
were moving through. There are a number of NORTHERN FLICKERS in the air and on
the lawns.

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach West End

2018-10-19 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I(Sy Schiff) found Ken Feusel at the east end of the Coast Guard
hedgerow photographing an empidonax flycatcher. A very interesting bird with
white throat and semi-tear drop eye ring. ID will be a challenge.
Focus was on the flycatcher, but we managed to see PALM, PINE, MAGNOLIA ,
CHESTNUT-SIDED AND YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS Plus COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. There were
a lot of birds in the air moving through, but no blackbirds. Some 5-600 TREE
SWALLOWS were milling about over the median with a steady stream moving through
along with a number of NORTHERN FLICKERS.
We walked down to the inlet and checked the bar across the inlet. We managed to
make out oystercatchers, 145 FORSTER’S TERNS and seven (7) MARBLED GODWITS.
This apparently where the latter feed when they’re not on the bar by the marina.
At the turnaround, it was mostly quiet but we managed some PURPLE FINCHES.
There was a scattering of hawks moving through all morning.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach and Heckscher SP

2018-09-14 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) stopped to view the Shot Beach bar at Jones west
end on our way east. Five minutes after we arrived a large group of AMERICAN
OYSTERCATCHERS joined the ones on the bar bringing with them a MARBLED GOTWIT.
Nice. The good ones usually fly off, not fly in. Other shorebirds included
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, 20 RED KNOT, 2 still bright red, SANDERLING, RUDDY
TURNSTONE and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. A single COMMON TERN and several
FORSTER’S TERN plus a GREAT EGRET were present. Some half dozen OSPREY were in
the West End.

We arrived at Heckscher Field #7 to find a group actively looking and
photographing a GOLDEN PLOVER and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER. Again nice. Other
shorebirds included 15+ KILLDEER, 1 SEMIPALMADED PLOVER, 2 WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS. A MERLIN was in the neighborhood harassing
the STARLING flock.

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach bar and Heckscher SP

2018-08-28 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) stopped on the way to Heckscher SP and birded the
bar at the Jones Beach Marina just before high tide. There were the usual
Common Terns, American Oystercatchers, Black-bellied Plover, Red Knot, Ruddy
turnstones and Short-billed Dowitchers. As the tide moved in and covered the
bar, all shorebirds but the Oystercatchers flew off.

We moved on to Heckscher. The remnant puddle was about the size of a car. In
it were 1 Semipalmated Plover, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Killdeer and 1 Pectoral
Sandpiper. The surrounding grass held an additional 8 Killdeer. Very, very hot.
Birding and photography was done close up from the inside of an airconditioned
SUV. Very nice way to bird in hot weather.

Back to Jones on the way home. The bar was now partially exposed and in
addition to the returning earlier shorebirds, there were now some Sanderling
and Semipalmated Sandpipers. New for yesterday and today was a Western Willet
and 2 Royal Terns.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach- Short Beach Island

2018-08-27 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) birded the bar at the Marina, near high tide. A
nice group of shorebirds, but few species. The high light was 50+ RED KNOT,
many still quite red. There were 125 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, a dozen RUDDY
TURNSTONE and three dozen BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.

After a short trip tp Robert Moses, returned and found somewhat fewer KNOT, but
the addition of 30 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, some
SANDERLING and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER. There were two SURF SCOTER in the
water. It’s a start.

Very strong gannet flight this morning with upwards of 1000 birds observed.
There are currently huge feeding flocks to the west, most likely spectacularly
visible from the Long Beach area. A Parasitic Jaeger flew west past the jetty
at around 7:35. Sea duck numbers were low, with small flocks of all 3 scooters
and singles of Common Eider and Long-tailed Duck.

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach

2017-10-17 Thread Sy Schiff
Joe Jiunta & I (Sy Schiff) started at the hedgerow by the Coast Guard Station.
Only 2 Song Sparrows, but a half dozen RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and a half dozen
EASTERN PHOEBES. Just down the road to the Fisherman’s lot, there was a burst
of activity, mainly of more EASTERN PHOEBES and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS.

Following a report we walked out to the main road and to the west of the
entrance to the Station, we finally found sparrows: SONG, WHITE-THROATED,
CLAY-COLORED and LINCOLN’S SPARROWS. A return to the hedgerow an hour later
finally found sparrows including a SWAMP and WHITE-CROWNED SPRARROW.

The bar was filled with American oystercatchers, DUNLIN, a few SANDERLING, some
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and 2 RED KNOT. There were no shorebirds in the swale,
but there were 3 AMERICAN PIPIT.

Raptors included a MERLIN and a RED-TAILED HAEK.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End White Crowned Sparrows, warblers (today)

I've been here before sunrise and have seen lots of activity already. Lots

Blues, Bay Breasted, and a Worm Eating. 2 White Crowned Sparrows at the

Black Throated Green but didn't have a black throat (at the Coast Guard

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach: Dickcissel, Interesting Nashville Warbler, Migration Notes

2017-09-22 Thread Timothy Healy
I heard the nocturnal flight calls of several Swainson's Thrushes over my house
last night, and despite minimal radar activity there were some nice birds at
Jones Beach. A heard-only Dickcissel that called a few times as it flew
northwest past the start of the fisherman's road was the "rarest" bird I saw,
but there was an enjoyable spread of other species. Large flights of flickers
continue, with plenty of raptors working the vegetation edge. Phoebes are
moving through in some numbers, and the increased high tide ended up chasing
most of the 100+ Red Knots and 350+ oystercatchers off the flooded spit. 10
species of warblers were highlighted by a nice bright Blackburnian and a
Nashville Warbler whose greener lower back, prominent white vent, and longish,
constantly pumping tail gave me pause. I'd like people with more expertise to
review my photos, but I wonder if this was an individual of the
Western/"Calaveras" subspecies that was proposed for a split this year. The
motion failed by one vote, if I recall correctly, so this could be a pair to
watch for in the future. The bird was observed in the brush north of the hill
next to the Coast Guard fence, just before the shoreline. I know Bob Anderson
also got some shots, which are most assuredly better than mine. Mosquitos
remain especially ferocious. Spray up.

Cheers!
-Tim H

Re: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Black-necked Stilts (NO)

2017-05-31 Thread Andrew Baksh

I have been out here since this AM and have not seen any sign of the
Black-necked Stilts (BNST). That does not mean they are not around since my
focus was more on counting shorebirds instead of searching for the BNSTs.

On a side note, the Cattle Egret continued this AM at Cow Meadow Park.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach: 3 Blue Grosbeaks and other migrants

2017-04-29 Thread Timothy Healy
Despite favorable conditions last night, THE big push of migrants is still
yet to come. Radar seemed to show more birds leaving our area than coming
in, and the early morning storms which might have produced fallout later in
the season didn't amount to much. Nevertheless, Jones Beach featured some
nice activity on this pleasant morning. The indisputable highlight was a
trio of Blue Grosbeaks encountered over the course of my time there: a
continuing female by the Coast Guard fence, a bright male working his way
west from the tollbooth to the boat basin, and a less flashy male by the
exit. Great opportunities to take photos and audio of this relatively
uncommon visitor. Other migrants of note included a White-eyed Vireo,
Indigo Buntings, Baltimore Orioles, and some House Wrens duking it out.
Only three warblers: Palm, Yellow, and many sharp-looking Myrtles. Common
Loons in vocalizing in flight were a treat. Some Fish Crows, usually less
common than Americans at Jones, are apparently building a nest in the
median.

[nysbirds-l] Jones beach strip

2017-03-24 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach Strip; 24 March

Overcast, blustery day. Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) birded the the Joes beach
strip out to Captree Island. Starting at the Coast Guard Station, the bar
contained a pair of AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and 7 PIPING PLOVER. Approx. 300
DUNLIN were flying about and landed on the far side of the inlet. Single
BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES were seen here and a various stops all the way out to
Captree SP and Captree Island. There we found a GREAT EGRET in the marsh.

At Oak Beach, we missed the grebes, but found lots of LONG-TAILED DUCKS
everywhere and both Loons. A GREAT CORMORANT was seen on the rocks in the far
distance.

Small birds were virtually absent in the blowing wind.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2016-12-02 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach 2 Dec

After checking the bar at the Coast Guard Station, Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff)
went to the swale walking down to the water. Of interest were 40 RED KNOT on
the bar with AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER.

On the beach, looking toward the jetty, almost at the end, there were 800-1000
DUNLIN. In the swale and on the beach were 75 SNOW BUNTINGS, 15 HORNED LARKS
and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR with the larks.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Hawk Watch

2016-11-26 Thread Steve Walter
Not in the conventional sense. But with all the talk of a Goshawk around the
Jones Beach West End, that seems to be what broke out. A bunch of people
ended up taking up a position overlooking the open area of the median area.
There were certainly a few Accipiter sightings, with several sightings of
Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks. There was even talk of a Levant
Sparrowhawk. Okay, that was me goofing around. But was there a Goshawk?
Could be. There seems to be a pretty big one around, with one reported
perched in the open in the early morning. I was forwarded decent but not
perfect pictures by Bobby Rossetti - although I'm not sure who took them -
of a birds said to be a / the Goshawk. Looking at them, I'm seeing Cooper's
Hawk. The first thing that caught my attention is how high up on the belly
the streaking fades to white. From what I can tell, the undertail coverts
are pure white. The streaking is denser than on many Cooper's, but not as
dense as should be on a Goshawk. There are some horizontal bars appearing
along the flanks - a pattern that I see on many Cooper's that I've
photographed before. The bands on the tail look straight, without any white
highlights that I can see. The supercilium appears minimal and not even at
the upper extreme that Cooper's can exhibit. The white spots on the back do
not seem out of line with some Cooper's that I've photographed.

So I'm not saying there isn't a Goshawk around or that people didn't see it
this morning. I just don't think the pictures I was shown are it. But I'll
be looking tomorrow morning - and hoping for a Cave Swallow or that we
finally get a notable finch flight on the NW wind.

I'll also slip in that I did some sea watching the last two mornings, at
field 6. Numbers weren't particularly impressive, probably because I didn't
start too early (around 8:15). I firmly believe you shouldn't have to get up
as early for birding as you have to for shopping. But anyway, yesterday's
"count" was led by Gannets, today's by Red-throated Loons (although a fair
number yesterday). The scoter flocks have been Blacks, but a single Surf
moved by today. There were two Forster's Terns today, heading east.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End

2016-11-26 Thread syschiff
Jones Beach West End 26 Nov

Joe Giunta and I (Sy Schiff) went to look for the Longspur reported. Upon
arriving at the Coast Guard Station parking lot, we were alerted to a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK. We walked down the road toward the turnaround, looking into the
median where the bird was reported. We spotted the raptor in the large
deciduous tree in the middle. Nice scope views and distance photos from the road

Returning to our cars, we drove to West End #2.and walked down the swale. A
large flock of HORNED LARKS was feeding, but no Longspur.

A SNOWY OWL had been reported on the beach yesterday, so we turned towards the
jetty. No luck by us or others converging on the beach, but we did turn up a
flock of about 75 SNOW BUNTINGS, Meanwhile some one spotted the owl in the
opposite direction. We looked, we saw, and called it a successful morning
birding.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach and Hempstead

2016-11-12 Thread Timothy Healy
Pack your gloves if you're birding: it's cold out there, folks! Jones Beach
saw some movement this morning, with lots of Red-wings and a fair few
finches passing overhead on their journey to the west. Hundreds of gannets
were seen moving just offshore, and a noisy Great Blue Heron flew down the
coast as well. Two Lapland Longspurs were located in a flock of Snow
Buntings at the beach, and Horned Larks and a pipit were also seen nearby.
Expected raptor species were on the hunt.

A brief stop at Hempstead Lake revealed groups of Hooded Mergansers and
Ruddy Ducks on the main lake, along with a Red-throated Loon. This was my
first sighting of this species at the park, and it was diving actively and
feeding. After the first glimpse I lost it for several minutes and was
wondering if I'd seen what I thought I'd seen!

Cheers!

Re: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach - Vesper Sparrow

2016-11-11 Thread Robert McGrath
Echoing Mike's observations, Rich Gostic and I (Bob McGrath) were the two
birders they left with the sparrow on the median. The bird was very secretive
during our thirty minutes waiting of it to re-emerge from the pines. Patience
is definitely required, for those who invest the time once they locate the
bird, but you should be rewarded.

2016-10-29 Thread John Mora
My wife and I birdied for two hours at West End commencing at 3 PM.

Nice sized groups of foraging yellow rumps. One Blue Headed Vireo. One Royal
Tern fly over. Two easily spooked White Crowned Sparrows along roadside
heading towards police station. Only one Red Breasted Nuthatch. Some picture
perfect White Throats mixed with on territory Song Sparrows.

One flock of flickers and a steady slow stream of migrating Tree Swallows.
Male Harrier and one quick darting accipiter. A few Robins and 3 Red Winged
Blackbirds in high flight.

We always appreciate seeing Brandt. There were about 18 Black Bellied plovers
and two Oystercatchers.

One Phoebe earlier at Fishing Pier earlier in the day. Also Ruddy Turnstones
foraging on the pilings under the Pier.

We saw a perched Merlin atop dead pine near the Pier when heading home.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach

2016-10-28 Thread syschiff
Joe Giunta, Joe Viglietta and I (Sy Schiff) Birded Jones Beach West End on a
cool, sunny, very windy day. The wind kept the birds down but the lawn at the
bottom of the hedgerow and the shrubs just before the turn into the Coast Guard
Station entrance held a number of sparrows. They did not venture very far out
and were quite skittish. The variety was good, consisting of 8
species:CHIPPING, FIELD, WHITE-THROAT, WHITE-CROWN, SONG, LINCOLN, SWAMP, plus
a SAVANNAH SPARROW behind the West End #2 concession stand.

There were 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in the trees by the Coast Guard Station
entrance, but flew off as we approached. The median harbored 8 EASTERN PHOEBE
and 14 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH among the usual birds,

Cutting across the West End parking lot we notices 4 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
in the gull flock. One bird had exceptionally bright yellow legs There were at
least 25 FORSTER'S TERNS flying on the far side of the inlet, but could have
been twice as many. The wind made long distance viewing very difficult. The bar
contained the usual suspects, 150 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS still lingering.

The winds were right but only a few raptors moving through. A NORTHERN HARRIER
may have been a migrant,

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Warbler

2016-10-22 Thread Tim Healy
I headed down to Jones to follow the Connecticut report and was quickly put on
the bird. I watched it forage in the weedy growth along the fence line for
about half an hour. I saw it well several times as it came into the open as it
foraged. I snapped photographs, I watched it through binoculars, it was a grand
old time. It is only now, looking at those pictures on my computer, without the
bite of the cold wind and light rain, that I realize things were not as they
seemed. This skulky little bird's thin eyering is actually incomplete, with
breaks at the front and back. The throat is noticeably whitish, and thinking
back its rapid movements were more hoppy than the typical gait of a
Connecticut. I've attached a few of my photos to my eBird checklist, which show
that this individual looks to have been a Mourning Warbler after all. Still a
wonderful find and a lovely little bird!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach State Park Birds (Nassau Co.)

2016-10-15 Thread Ken Feustel
There was a good amount of bird activity at JBSP early this morning. Starting
at dawn, I birded West End then moved east to Zach’s Bay. Shortly after dawn a
calling Dickcissel was observed flying down the beach near the marina parking
area. On the sandbar were some three hundred American Oystercatchers with three
Western Willets mixed in. Both kinglets were present in good numbers, but
sparrows, due to intensive hawk activity (Merlins and Cooper’s Hawk), were
confined to the thick shrubbery. A handsome male Baltimore Oriole briefly
perched in the median, but quickly disappeared. A visit to the ponds between
WE2 produced Pectoral, White-rumped, Semipalmated, and Least Sandpipers as well
as two Wood Duck, Pintail, Shoveler, Gadwall, and Green-winged Teal. A
cooperative American Pipit was meandering along the exposed pond edge. At the
temporary Field 6 entrance through the small parking lot a well-marked Lark
Sparrow was observed on the west side of the entrance. The incoming traffic
quickly flushed the bird to the east side of the entrance where it was
relocated in the early afternoon (photo). The late morning and afternoon proved
to be much better for sparrows as the raptor activity subsided. Warblers
numbers are declining quickly (except Yellow-rumped) - I observed only
Black-throated Blue(1), Black-throated Green(1), and Palm(2).

Ken Feustel

P.S. The annual Breast Cancer walk is at Zach’s Bay tomorrow (Sunday).

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach - Cackling Goose, Golden-Plover, and Rusty Blackbird movement

2016-10-10 Thread Tim Healy
I've been at Jones Beach since 6:40 today. The strong northern winds definitely
brought some movement. Early in the day, Brendan Fogarty and I spotted several
batches of Rusty Blackbirds (totaling about 11) passing overhead. Calls and
coloration were distinctive, and one was forced to perch in the pines after an
attack from a Merlin. A calling American Golden-Plover was heard repeatedly
near the turnaround. Rumps, sparrows, and flickers made up most of the flight.
Purple Finches and nuthatches are also around, and falcons were hunting. The
surprise of the morning came when Brendan pointed out a small goose heading
west with a flock of Canadas. It passed directly overhead, showing its smaller
size, rapid wingbeats, and shorter neck with a clean white ring around the
base. The overall coloration was frosty and pale, which was conspicuous even at
a distance with the naked eye. Photos will be uploaded, but the birders
fortunate enough to see it agreed everything was consistent for a Richardson's
Cackling Goose. A search to check the geese at Point Lookout could prove
fruitful.

Cheers!

Subject: [nysbirds-l] Jones Beach: Dickcissel, Blue Grosbeak, Caspian Terns,
and more

Despite a poor showing on the morning radar and a dismal start to the day at
Robert Moses, Jones Beach has served up a lovely bit of excitement. The pair of
Caspian Terns continue at the boat basin, seen resting on Short Beach earlier
and one in flight just now. A Dickcissel was heard repeatedly calling from the
outer turnaround as I watched a young White-eyed Vireo chase a Blue-headed in
the bushes at the main turnaround. Stacey and Kurt found a bird of interest by
the coast guard fence near the fisherman's road, flagging me over to confirm
their Blue Grosbeak. Tree Swallow numbers exceed 1000, and there are plenty of
Yellow-rumps, flickers, and nuthatches around. A single Blackpoll was the only
non-Myrtle warbler IDed, though there have been plenty of rapid flybys and
flyovers. Large flock of oystercatchers on the sandbar for high tide now.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach: Dickcissel, Blue Grosbeak, Caspian Terns, and more

2016-10-04 Thread Tim Healy

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach birds

2016-09-21 Thread Tim Healy
I had the opportunity to swing down to the shore after work. A large hatch out
of ants provided a feast for about a hundred Laughing Gulls at Jones Beach
Field 6. The median at the West End featured some nice activity. Ruby-crowned
Kinglets and Red-breasted Nuthatches were foraging in the pines, and there were
phoebes and pewees flycatching from the branches. Warblers included several
Redstarts, a Parula, a Yellow-rump, a bright Pine, and a handsome male Cape May
who put on quite a show. There were other birds flitting about but the fading
light put an end to the outing too soon. Multiple Merlins, a Peregrine, and
some very vocal Black-crowned Night-Herons were also observed.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach report, 9/12

2016-09-12 Thread Timothy Healy
I took advantage of a day off from work to check out the beach at first light.
The winds looked favorable, the radar was busy, and last night at Lido Beach
there were almost constantly flight calls of migrants passing overhead. Jones
experienced an initially promising, modest flight of birds at sunrise, but the
activity was short-lived. By 8:30 many of the passage birds had moved through
and there was little to be found on continued sweeps of the area. My previous
post described the highlight of the morning, a Dickcissel seen and heard along
the fisherman's road near the Coast Guard Station. After being discovered at
6:55, the bird was heard once more around 7:25. Subsequent visits by other
birders failed to relocate this individual. Bobolinks were the stars of the
show, with 36 tallied passing overhead mostly early in the day. Redstarts and
Yellowthroats led the warbler charge, and I found singles of Black-and-white,
Magnolia, Palm, Yellow, and Parula. A very drab first-year female Cape May and
one Black-throated Blue of each sex rounded out the family, though many other
warblers were passing overhead with the dawn flight. Red-breasted Nuthatches
continue to dominate the landscape, and catbirds were also conspicuous and
numerous. Other expected landbirds were present in small numbers. Around 9:45,
I spotted an aerial chase apparently involving several Merlins over the
turnaround, but raising my binoculars revealed that one of the three birds was
actually a Common Nighthawk which continued west.

A brief stop at Hempstead Lake on the way home found it dry and mostly quiet.
Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush were added to the day list, alongside Parula,
Redstart, and two more female-type Black-throated Blues.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach - landbirds on the move and continuing shorebirds

2016-08-23 Thread Tim Healy
I birded Jones Beach from 6:20-10:10 this morning. There was no sign of either
Sora or Virginia Rail at the dune ponds, but there good numbers of shorebirds
continue including White-rumped Sandpiper, three Stilt Sandpipers, and a
Whimbrel which flew west around 7:45. Others reported seeing Solitary and
Pectoral Sandpipers. A young Peregrine also visited the ponds, and several
dozen Great Egrets passed over heading west early in the morning.

I swept the coast guard station, fisherman's road, and median, turning up a
decent variety of early migrants. Small flocks of Red-wings and Bobolinks
passed overhead, and I found good numbers of Yellowthroats and Redstarts. N.
Waterthrush, two Black-and-whites, a Yellow, and briefly-seen possible
Magnolia, as well as some unseen flyover "zeeps", rounded out the warblers.
Great Crested Flycatchers, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Baltimore Oriole, and Cedar
Waxwings were also encountered. Barn, Tree, and Bank Swallows were all present.

Cheers!

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach rails - Sora & Virginia Nassau County

2016-08-19 Thread David Klauber
Last evening from 6 to dark(8) I looked for the Sora reported earlier by Ken
Feustel. The light was perfect, so of course no Sora. However Brendan Fogarty
found an immature Virginia Rail skulking in the southeast corner of the
easternmost small pond, but it quickly ran off into the phrags towards the east
not to be seen again.

Early this morning Brendan found an adult Virginia Rail on the western edge of
the same small pond (the easternmost one closest to the nature center, east of
the blind). Around 7:45 I saw 2 rails, one of which turned out to be the Sora,
at the western edge of the channel (not far from where Ken reported it), this
time on the northern edge of the small channel connecting the ponds, where it
opens into the large pond that is directly south of the blind. We never saw the
second rail again, which I suspect was an immature Virginia, but the Sora was
there until at least 9 when I left. It often disapperaed into the phrags on the
north edge but sometimes came into the open. Viewing point was by the blind.
There were also 1 or 2 Pectoral sandpipers. Very nice find, Ken

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach rails YES - 8/19 AM

2016-08-19 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,
An adult Virginia Rail was in the easternmost West End pond this morning (where
the juvenile Virginia was yesterday evening) at 6:30, and the Sora was showing
poorly when I left at 7:45, still in the little channel between the easternmost
and widest West End pond. So there are at least three individuals around.
Icterid migration was evident with a flock of 20 Boblinks. There were also a
few flyover warblers (incl. Black-and-White, Northern Waterthrush) and a
Baltimore Oriole, all flying over the ponds. Most birds seen with Dave Klauber
and Bob Anderson.

Hi everyone,

Dave Klauber and I failed to spot or hear the Sora at the ponds his evening,

Shorebird diversity was nice, half a dozen White-rumpeds, a Pec, and a juvenile
Stilt.

When faced with such illegal drone intrusion, it sure would it be nice to
possess a focussed signal jammer that could send these aerial nuisances
plummeting to earth. No law enforcement personnel need be involved. It would
also obviate unavoidable yet pointless fantasies involving skeet shooting. ;-)

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach shorebirds (Nassau Co.) 7/27

2016-07-27 Thread Brendan Fogarty
Hi everyone,

Shorebirds found somewhere better to be this afternoon on high tide, but the
last few days have brought Stilt, White-rumped, Pectoral, and Western
Sandpipers to the ponds between West End field 2 and TR Nature Center. Today
my highlight were three Western Willets flying with an Eastern, calling
"split me! split me!".

My lowlight was a fancy drone that appeared
Star-Wars-Episode-V-imperial-probe-droid-from-the-very-beginning-style quite
close to me. It flew low over the ponds, scaring shorebirds. Drone flying is
illegal at Jones Beach. Call the police ONLY if you SEE SOMEONE OPERATING a
drone. Not much they can do otherwise. State Park Police: (631) 321--3700, or
ask to be redirected via 911.

Also two dog ticks. Stay safe, stay smart, and happy shorebird season.

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach West End Shorebirds

2016-07-21 Thread Robert Taylor
Was at the ponds at Jones Beach West until 1:30 - lots of shorebirds: short
billed dowitchers, both yellowlegs, semi plovers and sandpipers as well as
the continuing Stilt and Pectoral Sandpipers. (west and east side
respectively) A NYC birder had reported hearing a possible Least Bittern
yesterday but I could not locate one.

When I returned to check out the coast guard sandbar, no shorebirds were
present - too many vacationers scared them off. Saw a flycatcher -
assuming Willow by the restroom building.

Good birding,

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach nightjar (Nassau County)

On Saturday, a few people caught a glimpse of a nightjar (apparent Chuck-wills

about 15 minutes, then began its hunt, flying once through my headlight beams.
Early tomorrow morning may be a good opportunity to catch this bird before it

[nysbirds-l] Jones Beach Report

2016-05-11 Thread Michael Zito
So far this AM on the fisherman's road by the coast guard station there has
been the following birds:
Black throated blue
Worm eating
Northern parula
Yellow
Yellow rumped
Rose breasted grosbeak (female)
Baltimore Oriole

Not exactly hopping, but not bad either. Birds were kind of high up, not ideal
for photography.
