After all, on Apple's Canadian website, it was listed only as current. Further, nothing on the box listed the item as version 2, a version which many of us know to be unaccessible. Since yesterday was Saturday, I spoke to Apple Support concerning my issue, as Customer Service was closed. When I spoke to the agent who took my call, I was told that information concerning the fact that the 8 gig touch had not been updated to version three was all over the website. I would like to ask him where such info is listed on the Canadian site, but instead I'll simply take my case to Customer Service on Monday. My advice to those who are interested in purchasing the touch? If you need accessibility, purchase only version 3 of the Touch which comes in the 32 and 64 gig models. Anything less will not talk to you. And, so far anyway, it has been my experience that Apple sees such problems as Buyer Beware. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised to learn that my problem is limited to one isolated agent. Meanwhile, when buying a touch, make sure to get the right one. Anyway I was on the Goldwave site today to report an issue I was having and to see whether the issue could be resolved or whether a workaround existed when I came across an interesting question in the FAQ section of the support site, Is their a version of Goldwave for the Mac? I looked up the answer and the answer was At this time their is not a version of Goldwave available for the Mac OS, after this the site presented me with several links to audio editing alternatives which included Sound Studio and one I'd never heard of called Peaks Pro at http://www.bias-inc.com/products/ I downloaded the software and though I've played with it in a very short space of time I can't help being impressed with what I've seen so far, Peaks is a true Audio editing and Mastering tool with many features that only top end sound production suites offer. As you'll see from the web site many additional plug-ins and options are available to turn tPeaks into what would seem to be an incredible home studio so if this software proves to be accessible then we may be on a winner and I can only hope that the developers will be interested in finding solutions to problems if indeed any exist. So far I haven't had time to try and navigate round files but I can tell you that toolbars seem perfectly accessible and the menu system is bursting at the seams with a whole aray of features, commands, functions and options. Recorder question
Hi all, I'm going to be going to a heavy metal concert in October. It's going to be in a club, not a stadium or anything like that. Now I have an Iriver H340 with rockbox and a pair of external mics. They're custom made, and I'm not sure exactly what the capsules are. My question is, would this work, or would anyone recommend getting an H2, or something else? I can't really recreate the conditions in the house, or else I'd be able to test it myself and see if it'd work. So I'm asking those who've tried it, or who have the capability to put out lots of sound and see how the Iriver handles it with the latest Rockbox. Or those of you who've tried recording concerts or other similar loud stuff with lots of bass with any of the other popular recorders out there for your opinions. Re: dvd ripper and all music converter
Hi, For getting DVDs, I'd suggest DVD Decrypter. It can be found on the web, make sure you get the older version and don't check for updates. If you just want the audio from them, DVD Audio Extractor is wonderful and I've never had problems with it. As for music conversion, I personally use Gold Wave, because it can use the Lancer OGG encoders. If you're converting from MP3, CDex is a nice program. Much faster, but encoding to AAC and such formats is somewhat trying. Re: dvd ripper and all music converter
Hi Well, as long as you have the license for the WMA files, you can use the diskwriter plug-in in Winamp if you have that to write wav files, then convert them to mp3 or whatever with CDex. As for Real files, I have no idea. I've never even installed Real Player. Possibly something like Tunebyte when selected as the sound card in Real might do it a bit better, never used that either but I know it's out there. satelite radio
Hi all, Sorry if this is too far off. Audio Repeater problem

Hi David, Installing Rockbox on the IPod doesn't take more than 3 minutes. All you have to do is run a program, hit a few keys, then copy and paste a directory and a file. The big part is replacing your music if it's in protected format if you have a lot of it. Re: I need help installing rockbox
Hi, What you need to do is first of all place the x5fw.bin in the firmware directory. Plug in the power cord before you paste that in there. Unplug the USB and turn the player off. Turn it back on again and that part should be done. Re: SanDisk Sansa e200 Series MP3 players.
Hi, I bought one of these units. I'll tell you about my experience with it. The only software I installed, I don't remember if there was any more or not was the Sansa Updater. Other than that, I'd grabbed a PDF of the manual which was accessible and found out how to get it off MTP into MSC or mass storage mode. It was a fairly decent player, except for the fact that the wheel is rather fiddly. It's not solid, and one physical click of it doesn't necessarily mean only one movement. A few days after I got mine, the updater killed it. I took it back to BestBuy and bought an IAudio X5. The good news for you, if you're thinking about getting one, is that Rockbox is now supported on the Sansa E200 models, as long as they're not the R series. If you can get just an E250 260, 270 or 280 you can run Rockbox on it and have fully spoken menus and file names, better recording and more format support. mp3 converter?
Hi all, Has anyone ever run into a music converter that can convert by bitrate? What I mean is one I can load a folder into and define which files I want converted. Say for example I wanted to have all files with a bitrate greater than 192 kbps converted down to save some space. Normally, I'd either have to go through all the files and find the ones that were over, or just reconvert them all and get lower quality files taking up more space, defeating the whole purpose. If anyone can recommend a program, please drop me a message. Please help: DVD software
Hi all, Not really related to audio but I need a piece of software to burn data DVDs that's free. The hard drive is making some funny noises and I want to make sure all my stuff is backed up. Up to now I've just had the stuff it's hard to replace or takes a lot of time, but now I want everything if I have to get a new computer or at least a new hard drive. Hi, To do this here are the steps. 1: go into start, programs, accessories, entertainment, volume control. Go to the options menu on the menu bar and select properties. Make sure the mixer is the one you want, then tab to the adjust volume for radio buttons. Select recording and select the source you want from the updated dialog. 2. Start CDex. 3. Make sure that in the encoder options you have the one you intend to use selected and the bitrates configured. 4. Go to the tools menu, record from analog input. 5. Tab through the settings, making sure everything is set the way you want and the path is correct. 6. Press space bar on the record button. Podcast Receivers
Hi all, I've got a question about podcast receivers. I've currently got the latest version of Juice. It's downloaded partial podcast files and called them complete. It also claims partial downloads that aren't anywhere on my computer. Is this expected behavior, the fault of my dial-up connection or something totally out there? Regardless, does anyone have any suggestions for other JFW 7 friendly podcast receivers? On a related, but not pc audio topic, what about RSS receivers. I saw a demo of the Icon recently, and the podcasts and RSS were integrated into one client. Is that done in any for the PC? And if so, do any of them work with JAWS and cash the RSS articles? I'm relatively new to the whole thing, but I want to get started. Re: I audio players
Hi, From reading the manual, I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. To pop up the file browser in Rockbox, with the X5 you press the center of the joystick. You're then placed on your current song, and you use the left arrow to move up levels, up and down to move in that level and right to open a folder or open a song. I'm pretty sure there are more keystrokes needed with the stock firmware. A blind person should be able to do it as long as they have someone figure it out with them the first time. If you have the X5, I can either attach and send or point you to a URL with lists of the menus in order with the latest stock firmware, to make it easier to use the features. Hi, As of right now, Rockbox only works on the X5. It can be ported by someone who knows how to code in whatever language Rockbox is in, to a few of the players as all the docs are there. But no one has done it yet. Most of the newer players aren't ported yet, because no one has taken them apart and figured out what sort of hardware they have inside, and the drivers to get them working with OpenSource. Re: Availability of Software/Drivers for the Sony Netmd Walkman MZ-S1 Mini-Disk Player
Hi, I'm not sure if this has changed, but if you go to connect.com and download Sonic Stage from there, it may connect to your MD player. It did for mine a while ago, but I believe they may have changed the player. If this is the case, go to minidisk.org and search the forums for Sonic Stage. If you can find a version of 1.5 or greater, you should have no problems. Another way to convert AC3
Hi list, Just after I pointed out BeSweet and BeLight to the list, CoreCodec who hosted the GUI versions went down. However, I've found a new way to convert AC3. What you need is Winamp, either the K Lite codec pack or AC3 Filter... basically the capability of playing AC3 in Winamp. Then you need an output plug-in for Winamp. I'm currently using Out_Lame, but any plug-in that outputs files, or can convert files without needing to output them should work. Once you have these, you can simply add your AC3 files to a playlist. You can then use any Winamp command, with the Output plug-ins anyway, to convert. You can check how much time is left in the file, stop after the current track, probably stop with fade and any other standard Winamp commands. I've tested it so I know that output works with Out_Lame. It converts extremely fast, too. I've been doing 120 minute files in about 30 minutes, and still retaining usage of my PC. This will depend on your processor, so you out there with the athlons can do it much faster, but everyone can do it. I'm currently converting a file, downloading something and have a text file open. My fan's revved up to max, but I can still operate fairly fast on a sempron system. Re: Another way to convert AC3
Hi, Same process. If Winamp can play the format, it can convert it using the output plug-in. If it can't play that particular format, you'll have to check the input plug-ins page on winamp.com to find out if Winamp can support that. If you can find an input for it, you can output it using any output plug-in you want. Brandon Gary Petraccaro wrote: How would I find an output plug-in to convert .ASF to .MP3? Hi, I've seen this happen to mine. Similar thing, it disappears every so often from My Computer, especially when I put in CDRW media. What I did is simply start running the add hardware wizard. Re: mini disc recorders?
Hi, I've used Sony's recorders before. I advise being very careful with them. If you're looking to use the recorder to transfer recordings or music to and from your PC, you'll have to do it analog. Sonic Stage isn't accessible at all, even with JFW 8. I believe there are alternative pieces of software out there that can accomplish the transfers, but I don't know how many, if any of them are officially supported by Sony. If you go to the Sony Store, or whatever the equivalent in your area is that only sells sony products, they can most likely help you. The people at the one where I live were very helpful. As there are different programs for different models, I'd suggest trying them out first, just seeing if you can get around the U I then go buy the recorder. I'd really suggest using something else, such as a hard drive based recorder, or the R09 or R1 or something for recordings. K Lite
Hi, Someone mentioned K Lite's codec pack on this list. I went and downloaded it, but I'm not really sure what it does exactly. I know it provides codecs for a whole load of audio and video formats, but codecs for what? I looked in CDex and none of them showed up. The AC3 one works in Winamp, is that all these things do? I also got a copy of Oggdrop XPD, but it doesn't seem to be accessible, because you apparently need to drag files into it. Any help would be appreciated. Re: I Found One!
Hi, If you want the 5.1 in AC3, DVD Decrypter does this. It's a bit weird to get the files, so if you want I'll write you offlist with instructions, but if you just want it in OGG or whatever else, as far as I know only OGG supports 5.1, DVD Audio Extractor is for you. Speaking of, how much is it, and does the site support PayPal? I'm curious so that if I can get OGG files in one step for a reasonably cheap price instead of getting AC3 then going to OGG, I'll take it. Thakns Brandon Studio Montebello wrote: Hey Brandon! EAudioBooks
Hi all, Recently, I've been looking for downloadable audio books. I've looked at Audible, but they only appear to accept credit cards as payment. Since it's a sure bet that none of the books I'm interested in would be in the free section there, I'm wondering what other options are out there. Are there any audio book sites that offer downloads of audiobooks that can be paid for via debbit card, not credit, or a PayPal account? Or, even better, that provide free audio books that have been written in the past, say, 40 or 50 years? I've seen a couple out there, but I lost my bookmarks when I moved to the Acer and my Compaq is long gone, and I can't seem to find the sites again. If any of you have stumbled on any such sites, please let me know. DVD Audio Ripping
Hi all, I realize this discussion has been gone over countless times on this list and I appologize for doing it again. Is there any way of either converting existing .AC3 files, without uploading them to one of those media converter services, to either WAV MP3 or OGG? If not, is there a program that rips audio directly into OGG that doesn't have a 30 day demo like DVD Extractor? I assume they're smart enough to put code in so the program stops working after 30 days. If not I'll use this, but if so I'd like some other way of doing it. Failing that, what rippers do MPG format? I can open those in Gold Wave and save the Audio as long it's done in MP3. I can then transcode it to OGG. Re: Somewhat urgent: Recording software
Hi all, I'm currently doing my recording. I found out that CDEx has a recorder, which I forgot about. It doesn't use temporary files like GoldWave and the others you mentioned, it encodes in realtime directly to any of the encoders available in the rip settings. This makes it quicker to pause, save and restart recordings at the commercials as all that is need is a few presses of tab and space. Gold Wave takes too long to save files in a compressed format, I'd end up missing large parts of the countdown. CDEx doesn't use up much processor power even with the direct encode, and knows to record from the line-in and nothing else. 5.1 channel card suggestions
Hi all, I've now got a surround system for my PC and for movies and games and such. I know that there are games out there for visually impaired people that take advantage of 5.1 audio. My question is, what sound cards are there out there for laptops, where they plug into the card slot or are USB powered that support true 5.1 audio, not just simulated surround sound, or can a regular card be used? I've got the Logitech X-530 speakers at the moment. I'm also going to be receiving another set in a few days to compare them. They claim to have much better specs than these ones, but apparently have the same configuration. I can't find info on them. Anyways, if anyone can tell me names and estimated prices for 5.1 cards that work reasonably well with JFW 8 and XP home on a laptop I'd appreciate it. Hi, You'll want to check to see what OS the phone runs on. There are three that it could use, possibly four. Some Palm devices use their OS, I'm not sure if there are separate ones for phones or not. Re: Simulate stereo.
Hi, I did this with a guitar track. I used a very minor delay. If it's too much, it will sound more like an echo, but something like 1 MS or so, maybe even less, will give you a stereo distinction. Gold Wave Tip
Hi all, This is probably common knowledge, but I figured I'd put this up there. If you're recording in Gold Wave from the line in, but you really don't want to monitor the input, say if your friend gives you a tape he wants converted but the music isn't to your taste and you have other things to do, you can, in the Windows volume control, check the mute box in line in playback. GW will still record, which is excellent. Re: The best MP3 player
Hi Dane, The Bookport doesn't record from line in from what I remember. It does internal mic. I read up about it a while back, before I found out about rockbox. Apparently they're coming out with a new unit, so it might be part of that one. Brandon Dane Trethowan wrote: Hi everyone! A very interesting thread this one but (for my needs at least) the Bookport doesn't seem to be the best MP3 player but it is by no means the only accessible mp3 player around. Take for example my Nokia N70 mobile phone using the Talks software, no trouble whatsoever accessing the MP3 music player on that and no trouble whatsoever transferring files to the phone from my computers or downloading them from the net as the phone is both USB and bluetooth compatible, its a WCDMA phone so you have the added benefit of broad-band internet speeds for uploading and downloading, I've been using this little beauty for ten months. Then of course there is my Iriver 340 which I've had for nearly 2 years now which has served me well with its ability to record, its ease of upgrading to thigns such as Rockbox and the like etc. Then I have my CD Players here which will play MP3 files and so it goes on. Well I looked at the Bookport and I have to admit it looks very nice particularly if you're wanting to read allot of books etc but the only downlside for my needs at least was the fact that I couldn't find out whether this device could record say from a line-in audio source, quite frankly for the amount of money I'd be paying for one of these things I'd expect that to be part and parcel of the machine but I do understand and respect the fact that everyone's needs are different to everyone elses so therefor I'm reluctant to knock any one product in favour of another. Re: Best MP3 Player
Hi, Too bad I didn't know BookPort was supporting OGG. If I'd have known, I might have saved my money and coughed up the extra 70 or more dollars to buy it instead of my X5. Probably not, though. I'm happy with 20GB of rechargeable hard drive, playing DVD's and AAC files. I've got Kurzweil, so converting most books to MP3 is a matter of half an hour. I think, and I'm not starting a war over this, or not intending to, that Rockbox is the way to go for MP3 players. Don't waste your money on MP3 players/recorders made specifically for the sighted user. Buy the Book Port from APH. I use this device everyday to listen to podcasts and other media I download. I transfer the recordings Replay AV makes for me to the Book Port. You do not have to worry about what menu your on as the Book Port reads all the folders and files to you through your headphones. Uses double A batteries. I hear that there's a chance for a newer Book Port unit. Is this true? I would love to see the new BP to have a better recorder and smaller body. Support for WMA and WMA DRM would be awesome.
