Actually it's not a stupid expression, just a misunderstood one (and
you, Frank, with your legal background, ought to know about it). It's
a legal maxim that dates back to Rome - the famed orator Cicero is the
first know reference.

Basically, it means that the act of specifying an exception to a rule
proves that such a rule exists even if said rule isn't explicitly
stated. Here's a concrete example: In many states in the U.S. traffic
law allows you to make a right turn at a red light (after coming to a
stop). But not all states permit this, so the issue when traveling
across country is determining whether the state you're in allows it.
The presence of a sign that says No right turn on red is what you
look for. The exception (the sign that says No right turn on red)
proves the rule (that in general you *can* turn right on red).

This is from a Dictionary of Foreign Words and Phrases in Current
English, by Alan Bliss (ISBN 9780415059053)

via Cecil Adams and the Straight Dope:
Cicero was defending one Bilbo. (No relation to Frodo.) Bilbo was a
non-Roman who was accused of having been illegally granted Roman
citizenship. The prosecutor argued that treaties with some non-Roman
peoples explicitly prohibited them from becoming Roman citizens. The
treaty with Bilbo's homeboys had no such clause, but the prosecutor
suggested one should be inferred.

Nonsense, said Cicero. Quod si exceptio facit ne liceat, ubi non sit
exceptum ... Oops, I keep forgetting how rusty folks are on
subjunctives. Cicero said, if you prohibit something in certain cases,
you imply that the rest of the time it's permitted. To put it another
way, the explicit statement of an exception proves that a rule to the
contrary prevails otherwise.

Almost every time when I fly, I try to choose a window seat that is

Prior to this I've never seen any rules governing taking photographs
on/from the plane, except for those posted by airlines in Russia.
(Photography on an airplane in the Soviet Union was strictly
prohibited. Strictly speaking the rules still forbid it, but today's
rules are not as strictly enforced.)

Today I found:
http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6867,1036,00.html
Onboard photography and video policy
The use of still and video cameras, film or digital, including any
cellular or other devices that have this capability, is permitted only
for recording of personal events. However, photography, audio, or video
recording of other customers without their express prior consent is
strictly prohibited. Also, unauthorized photography, audio, or video
recording of airline personnel, aircraft equipment, or procedures is
always prohibited. Any voice, audio, video, or other photography (motion
or still), recording, or transmission while on any United Airlines
aircraft is strictly prohibited, except to the extent specifically
permitted by United Airlines.

What about taking photos of things outside the aircract?
I suspect, that it is prohibited by the last sentence:
Any voice, audio, video, or other photography (motion or still),
recording, or transmission while on any United Airlines aircraft is
strictly prohibited

This is the first time I see any explicit policy with respect to
photography on an airplane in the US (or Europe outside of Russia).

proves the rule (that in general you *can* turn right on red).

To put it another
way, the explicit statement of an exception proves that a rule to the
 contrary prevails otherwise.

that's not the way I understand it, although I can understand your
reasoning).

My interpretation (given to me, coincidentally, by my pedantic Latin
teacher, who was well versed in Cicero) is that in order to test (prove) a
rule, you must use exceptions - in other words, exceptions test rules.

If the rule says You can't come into this nightclub wearing trainers -
that is, you can wear anyone footwear *except* trainers - and everybody who
tries to get in is wearing glass court shoes, you haven't tested the rule.
Trainers are the exception, so to test (prove) the rule someone has to try
to get in wearing them.

This principle works as well in software testing as it does in nocturnal
doormanship.

Re: Changing focusing screen om Pentax 67II?

I did change the screen - no problem - in my Pentax 67II.
But the screen came without the black frame. So I had to exchange the old one
with the new Plit Field Screen.
The creens are very easy an convenient to change if it comes in a frame.
Is it possible to get empty frames or frames with a screen?

across this Cheat Sheet which allows you to quickly see the effects of
various conversion options on a particular image.

 http://www.diyphotography.net/black-white-cheatsheet-for-photoshop

It looks useful but the instructions are a bit cryptic so this is how
 I've been using it.

Note that it's for Photoshop CS3 (and presumably later).

 1. Download the cheat sheet PSD file from the link above.
 2. Open the image you want to convert and resize to 2500 pixels wide
(not 1500 as indicated on that page)
 3. Copy that image to the clipboard and then discard it (obviously don't
save it over the top of the original image).
 4. Open the cheat sheet PSD and double click the top 'Original' layer
icon. This will open a new image window with a large 'X'
 5. Paste your image into that window, flatten and then close the window.
Select 'Yes' when asked to save - it just saves it to a temp directory
and it can be discarded later.
 6. Photoshop will now churn through a series of different conversions
 that you can compare.

If you want to, you can open the 'top', mid' and 'bottom' layers and
tweak the various settings to check the effect.

 Cheers

Re: PPG - Uploading of High Resolution Old Images

I only recently began submitting a few more pics to PPG after taking several
years off. However, I really didn't like those 600- pixel-tall images being
upsized to 900-pixel-tall images by who knows what method. I looked at some and
could see degradation. So rather than delete them all, I made new jpegs from
the original hi-res images and uploaded them. Of course, I had only placed
about 35 images prior to the site redesign. If I had 100, I might have said to
hell with it and taken them down.

Re: OT: Photography for Kids?

2012-01-22 Thread George Sinos
Sorry if I've said this before.

Something I've learned from my students is the typical viewpoint on
how things work.

For many people, the concept of focus is limited to the whole
picture being fuzzy or sharp. Think of focusing a movie projector.
The image is either sharp or it isn't. The idea of selective focus
isn't even in their mental model of the world. Given that, teaching
someone how to focus or how to select between spot focus and area
focus is fairly meaningless. The concept of controlling depth of
field us pretty tough without selective focus.

At the first session, I ask people to watch a tv show or a movie and
watch how the director uses light and focus to draw the viewers
attention to or away from action on the screen. The next session's
discussion almost always starts with someone saying that they had
never noticed any of that before.

When you're describing things to the general public, I've found that
you have to start by describing the artistic effects that can be
achieved and WHY you might want to achieve them. Then describe how
those things can be done technically.

Exposure, depth of field, etc. All of these things are just means to
the end of making a picture and guiding the viewer's eye through that
picture.

If I go to a basic writing course, I'm there to learn how to write.
Not how to work an obsolete typewriter. I want to learn how to tell a
 better story using words.

If I go to a basic photography course I want to learn how to tell a
 better story using images.

 Okay, I can sleep now.

You make some good points.  And I should explain my reasons.

I suggested using a film camera for one day, not for the whole course.

First and foremost, there is something very cool, about taking a photo,
developing the film, and seeing and having the tangible evidence in your
 hands.

I suppose that a lot of this could be done using photo paper and contact
prints. Or for that matter, photo paper and a pin hole camera that they made
themselves. Then possibly contact prints by placing the paper negative face
to face with another piece of photo paper.

I also suggested looking at the negatives, and using those as a way of
understanding exposure. I think that using film, and explicitly thinking
about each step of the process would do more to bring home the concepts than
magic handwaving and a camera that does everything for you.

As to your typewriter analogy, I would not require people to use a
typewriter in a creative writing class.  However, I might well have them
write and maybe even do the first edit of a piece long hand.  Writing things
out long hand slows you down, and forces you to think about each and every
word.  It also discourages verbal diarrhea, since it takes so much more
effort to write.  In the same vein, shooting with a completely manual camera
forces you to look at each step of the process, think about it and correct
 any errors earlier.

But, my main reason for suggesting spending a day with physical photography
rather than going right into digital, is because it would be cool and fun.
In retrospect,  contact prints, or possibly contact prints and pinhole
cameras would likely work even better, if for no other reason than the skill
required to roll film onto the developing reels.

It would probably be fairly easy to make the equivalent of an enlarger for
contact prints out of a clamp light, and some cardboard and aluminum foil so
that one student could expose their contact print and not everyone else's at
 the same time too.

 Today I found:

 Onboard photography and video policy
The use of still and video cameras, film or digital, including any
cellular or other devices that have this capability, is permitted only
for recording of personal events. However, photography, audio, or video
recording of other customers without their express prior consent is
strictly prohibited. Also, unauthorized photography, audio, or video
recording of airline personnel, aircraft equipment, or procedures is
always prohibited. Any voice, audio, video, or other photography (motion

What about taking photos of things outside the aircract?
I suspect, that it is prohibited by the last sentence:
Any voice, audio, video, or other photography (motion or still),

 strictly prohibited

This is the first time I see any explicit policy with respect to
photography on an airplane in the US (or Europe outside of Russia).

For many people, the concept of focus is limited to the whole

The image is either sharp or it isn't. The idea of selective focus
isn't even in their mental model of the world.

My experience is completely the opposite. Most people I've discussed this

achieve them. When I had the Contax / Zeiss equipment on of the things that
really drew people's attention was the quality of the out-of-focus

On the other hand, they don't notice deep focus. For example, in discussing

The next session's

never noticed any of that before.

When you're describing things to the general public, I've found that
you have to start by describing the artistic effects that can be
achieved and WHY you might want to achieve them. Then describe how

Thanks, David and Christine.

That is the real color I saw in the sky. It is enhanced by vog,
volcanic dust and gases that floats in from the Big Island of Hawai'i,
where Kilauea is constantly active. Normally, the trade winds (from
the Northeast) keep the vog away from Maui, but a storm north of the
islands produced three days of Kona (leeward) winds from the south,
bringing the pollutants to Maui. It is not very noticeable during the
day -- a little haze, perhaps -- but really affects the color and
intensity of sunsets here on Maui's west coast. The wind pattern is
back to normal, and sunsets the last two evenings were fairly boring
(but still pleasant).

Personally, I don't care too much about photographing the personnel

about photographing views: interesting clouds and the ground scenes

I'd also consider a DS or DS2, but I think I prefer the plain ol' D.

If anyone has one that they'd like to see go to a good home, drop me

Re: OT: Photography for Kids?

2012-01-22 Thread kwaller

Totally agree.
I'd suggest the emphasis be put on composition and what its all about -
isolate, simplify define.
In further, more advanced classes would be the time to get into some
technical aspects of photography - exposure the basics on non auto
exposure - the effects of aperature, shuitter speed spot metering etc. Imo
film might be referenced as the way it use to be.

This is late and probably nobody cares anymore, but I have to say my
piece or I'll fidget.

Larry and a few others suggest using film cameras in a beginners
course on photography. I think this is crazy and here's my analogy:
it's like giving a beginning writing course and requiring everyone to
show up with an old mechanical Underwood typewriter, then learn how to
thread the ribbon and apply white-out.

If I go to a basic writing course, I'm there to learn how to write.
Not how to work an obsolete typewriter. I want to learn how to tell a
better story using words.

If I go to a basic photography course I want to learn how to tell a
better story using images.

Okay, I can sleep now.

we'll deal in Auto modes

- Teaching practical applications... finding good light, how to
photograph your friends, your pet, sports, landscapes, your vacation,
macro, etc...
- Keep it fun... a photo scavenger hunt? a website they can post
pics/contribute to? A day in the life, or other photo projects..?
- Maybe 4 - 6 classes, 90 mins each

What do you think? Anyone out there ever done this sort of thing, or
have any good resources to share? I'd be most grateful...

I doubt that I'm the only one on this list that learned photography at
age 12 using a fully manual camera, and processed my own film in a
darkroom. Don't underestimate the ability of younger people to understand
things like exposure.

For a young kids class, I'd teach them:
how to hold the camera
How to look for good light:
not shooting into the light
not mixing sun and shade
enough light
how to use zoom, how to wait for focus
How to put the camera on a tripod (or a beanbag) and use the self timer
don't aim directly at a window with the flash

extra credit
fill flash
composition

As a matter of fact, that's pretty much the stuff I'd teach people who
don't want to learn photography, but want to take pictures.

For general photography I'd suggest:
All ages, kids under 12 by special permission. This way parents and kids
could do it together.

Adults only

I'd ask around for people with developing tanks, changing bags, old 35 mm
cameras and light meters collecting dust.

Day1:
I'd cover the basics in the above class. Homework, go and play with
cameras

Day 2:
I'd teach them the basics of exposure, using the histogram to illustrate.
I'd then show them how to use a lightmeter (internal or external) then
give them each a roll of Tri-X and a camera/lightmeter, and show them how
to load/unload the camera and give them until the next class session to
shoot the film
Day 3: Process the film and look at it. In many ways, they'd learn as
much just taking a roll of C41 BW to walgreens, but I think that
processing the film would be a lot of fun. I'm specifically avoiding
color film if we're talking exposure.
Day 4: scan the negatives look at the results on a computer, and discuss.
Review using the histogram, how to set exposure and when to use
auto or manual exposure. Assignment, take pictures using both manual and
auto exposure
Day 5: review digital exposure homework. teach depth of field, manual
focus, auto focus, and when to use tripods to stop down and get more
depth of field at slower shutter speeds.

Day 6: color balance, grey cards, raw versus jpeg

I don't care for the holga idea, it may be fun, but not as instructional
on a base level

As for the Pentax EVIL rumour, why would one buy a K-5 like speced

Thanks Ken. I like the rich tones in the carpet but I understand your comment

Actually, this is a youngish kitten. Oh!No! is a 4 month female. Meg looked out

left a kitten for us to appreciate. Hence Oh!No! (We had an appointment the
previous week to have Bete Noir spayed, but couldn't catch her.) Oh!No! has two
black litter mates, Darrel and Darrel, one of which, like Oh!No!, is now a
full-time indoor cat except when they go outside to visit with mother and other
family members. If you would like one, I can arrange transportation . . .
We have a largish Maine Coon in the house; I'll try and get Oh!No! and the big
guy in the same shot for size comparison.

Re: All you WORK are belong to us! (Apple)

2012-01-22 Thread Igor Roshchin

Stan,

This example is not a correct one.
Nobody complains that a kitchen knife is not suitable to hammer nails,
but nobody would forbid you using it for that purpose.

But if you buy a hammer at the store (or get it as a freebie), -
you are not going to read the instructions to see if you are not
allowed to use that hammer for a paid job.

While I clearly understand the motivation of Apple, but it is not
the RIGHT WAY to implement the solution.
If the software didn't have functionality except for submitting
the books via Apple website, that would be one thing. i

Stan, please read the second link, - it explains what the problems are.
They are not in the fact that Apple restricts something but rather in
_how_ they do that.

Perhaps this is the exception that proves the rule (that's actually
one of the most stupid sayings ever) but yours works.

Actually it's not a stupid expression, just a misunderstood one (and
you, Frank, with your legal background, ought to know about it).
It's a legal maxim that dates back to Rome - the famed orator Cicero
is the first know reference.

Basically, it means that the act of specifying an exception to a
rule proves that such a rule exists even if said rule isn't
explicitly stated. Here's a concrete example: In many states in the
U.S. traffic law allows you to make a right turn at a red light
(after coming to a stop). But not all states permit this, so the
issue when traveling across country is determining whether the state
you're in allows it. The presence of a sign that says No right turn
on red is what you look for. The exception (the sign that says No
right turn on red) proves the rule (that in general you *can* turn
right on red).

FWIW, according to the driver training syllabus provided by the Army
Safety Center before I retired, right turn on red was the law in all
50 states.

I believe I was the one who originally suggested starting them out with
disposable film cameras.

My reasoning was:

. Low initial investment before the parents find out whether the kid is
going to stick with photography; because ...

. Kids lose stuff;
. Simple controls - shutter winding wheel ( maybe a button to turn on
the built in flash)- allow the emphasis to be on light composition.

I expect that once you get them through the initial stages most of them
are going to be using the cameras in their cell phones.

Re: All you WORK are belong to us! (Apple)

2012-01-22 Thread Christine Aguila
Last night while waiting for my ISP to take my call, I started a book with the
new iBooks Author app. The really cool distinguishing features are the widgets
and their *extreme ease of use.* In my test book, I inserted a Keynote
presentation using the Keynote widget; a photo with text using the interactive
widget; a gallery of photos using the, you guessed it, the photo gallery
widget; a question with 4 multiple choice answers--identifying the correct
answer. If the reader gets the wrong answer, s/he and try again. Of course,
this was the question widget; The other widgets are 3D, movie, and HTML. I
didn't have any content in these forms to insert. I then exported to my iBooks
app, and it ran smooth as punch on my iPad. Totally amazing. While you are
designing and laying out your book, you can preview your on going work and any
of the multimedia widgets with the iPad when it's hooked up to your computer.

It seems to me the reason to use this app is for its amazing widgets, and if
you're going to use them, then you'd need to feel fairly certain that the
majority of your readers would have the device capability to enjoy your
interactive book to the fullest. I have no idea how an interactive book
produced with this app would run on, say, a Kindle or Nook device. It runs
great on the iPad, and I suspect that was the main intent, and if your book is
only going to run great on an iPad, well then any mass distribution goals might
have to be reconsidered.

If you're doing a book with just text and standard images or graphics, you
really don't need this app, though, obviously, you could still use it if you
wanted to.
Cheers, Christine

Sorry Igor, I have seen that thread and several other discussions in the last
day or two. And I still don't get what the issue is. Loosely paraphrasing, in
what is not at all a novel approach (pun intended), Apple says you use our
free goodies to make a buck, we want a share of the profits. And we'll manage
that process painlessly by putting the book through our store. Oh by the way,
as with apps for our phones etc. we do have standards; if your work is
objectionable, we don't want your business. Sounds fair to me. And I think the
Blurb analogy is a perfect one. Both offer free software which has the purpose
of allowing the user to make a product which will be produced/distributed
through the supplier of the software, yielding the software provider some
profit. Seems a good and fair business model.

BTW, I have been party to several contracts with actual publishers of actual
books. Technical, textbook-type books. Low quantity distribution expected, and
the publisher can only hope for break-even. So they structure the contract to
read (again, paraphrased) we are taking the risk, we are covering the up-front
production/advertising/distribution costs. So we'll take [all/most of] the
gross income from the first [1000/2000] copies. Then we'll start to give you
authors a small percentage of the net on succeeding copies sold. I find the
eBook business model to be much more palatable in that the share of profits
apparently does not vary as a function of sales volume; the author gets a share
of the income from the beginning.

IIRC, it used to be that GM, Ford, etc. expected you to do periodic maintenance
on your vehicle in order to maintain the validity of their warranty. Any more
they build them so well that maintenance is pretty much a moot point, but they
used to require you to have the work done in their facility. Again IIRC that
was stopped as an illegal restriction of trade. Someday, if Apple publishing
gets to be a significant factor in the eBook market, then maybe they might lose
a suit claiming unfair restriction. Right now to me I see nothing wrong with
what they are doing or how they are going about it.

They are not in the fact that Apple restricts something but rather in

I don't see this as a big issue. Blurb gives me free software to layout

other way, even on my own printer. (Well, I can print, but with a big
Blurb watermark on every page.) Anybody that doesn't want to print/sell
exclusively via Blurb can find some other software to use. Apple offers
free software to layout/distribute books via the Apple store. Anybody
that doesn't want to sell exclusively via Apple can find some other
software to use. Ho hum; no evil empire.

Re: PESO: PAW-1

Thanks Jeffry, Frank, Cory, David, Christine, Dan and Ken for your comments.
The kitten was sleeping near my desk, I liked the light falling across her, and
the way she had her head resting on the one outstretched paw, so I picked up
the camera sitting near at hand. The shutter sound (K20D) for the first shot
woke her, so the next three frames involved trying to maintain her attention
without inducing the usual frenetic kitten behavior. I maybe coulda/shoulda
stopped long enough to raise the ISO a notch or two to allow for more DOF, but
oh well. It did turn out to be a good portrait of her.

BTW, in the quote from my original message below I have inserted the word
seen to clarify/correct the original.

Yes, Debbie is my wife. I don't have a shot of her bike, which is now
partially disassembled, but here's a web pic:

It's a small bike, which is why she likes it.

This is the carburetor to Debbie's motorcycle.  I'm trying to clean it
without humiliating myself, but I am currently being balked by at

 selective desaturation.

Notice that when confronted with a true mechanical problem, I take a

practically, I've order an impact driver from Lisle.

that's not correct; Apple forbids you from _selling_ it, but not from
_distributing_ it (your term), outside of Apple's distribution system

the textbooks you can create are much like apps, and the restrictions here are
a bit looser than the restrictions when you use Apple's free software to
create apps; there are dozens of other ways to prepare rich content for iOS,
not to mention other devices, so i don't think there's much chance of lock-in,
except perhaps for a certain range of textbook publishing; textbooks are
already an extremely closed world, and i think Apple's move may jostle that
world bit at first, then a lot eventually — a good thing in my mind

and from what i understand this _free_ tool is pretty good; it must have cost
Apple a lot to develop; there are lots of tools which produce output that has
license restrictions; in this case Apple has done a pretty good job of
lubricating the process

Apple is not the only player, by any means; aside from other corpses competing
to create ecosystems (Facebook recently acquired Strobe, which was producing
a promising commercial framework on top of SproutCore), there is also strong
open-source action; Ember.js (SproutCore 2) and Baker, for example

that said i was underwhelmed with Apple's new offerings; i worked for years in
book and magazine publishing, and have some ebook creation in my future, but so
far i don't see any strong reason to use Apple's tools; it will be interesting
to see how the publishing industry evolves but we are very very much in the
infancy of digital publishing

I know, we're speaking of the largest and most profitable of companies here.
But modern corporations learned 10-20 years ago you can't stay in business if
you give it away. Once they figured that out, they got greedy with those
profits, collecting the best aftermarket companies and bringing them inside.
Eventually, they saw the light of the product/consumer marriage and even higher
profits, almost guaranteed. They've also learned that no one found any legal
reason they could not pull support as they introduced newer products. Software
that made your hardware obsolete on odd years, hardware that made your software
obsolete during even years. For corporate and educational use, this just about
forces them to replace everything in IT to be able to compete with the latest
WOW stuff.

But they only do this for your own good. Truth.
